00:00what is consciousness that's a question that has plagued scientists and psychologists for
00:08generations but now neurophysiologists at the University of Lund are looking to answer that
00:13very query and they're doing it with these rats that are on hallucinogenic LSD and other drugs
00:19this is postdoctoral researcher Sebastian Marientos Baeza to explain what we do is to
00:25implant in the brain of rats very tiny wires that are thinner than a hair and with that we can
00:35capture the neural activity of different brain regions at the same time together with different
00:42metrics of behavior he says that psychedelics are now being used frequently in certain human therapies
00:48but little is actually known about why they're helpful in those scenarios with the researchers
00:52saying at the moment the experiment is simple just measuring the rats spontaneous behaviors
00:56and activities they've been doing this for seven years and they have now discovered a synchronization
01:01in several key areas of the brain and pal hallia another researcher working on the project says
01:06this could indicate the drugs are messing with normal brain communication channels a process
01:11which could provide insight into mental conditions we urgently need a better understanding of how
01:16consciousness is generated yeah but right now we we only know that it is generated in our brains and
01:21we don't know if it can even be regenerated if it if it was if it will occur spontaneously in other
01:27intelligent systems or or if you actively have to kind of design it they said this could also be
01:33valuable data with regards to the next generation of artificial intelligence
