On Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 75th birthday, American sociologist Salvatore Baboons analysed his leadership, calling him India’s “first truly post-colonial Prime Minister.” Baboons noted that Modi, not part of the colonial-era elite, connects better with common citizens, citing Swachh Bharat as an example. He highlighted Modi’s foreign policy, where the early ‘neighborhood first’ approach faltered, but ties with major powers like the US, Russia, and China were managed effectively. The analysis also pointed to India’s stronger defence stance under Modi, including the Balakot strikes and his success in maintaining global support during crises.

00:00And we will kickstart this edition with some news of the Prime Minister
00:03and tell our viewers on how he is celebrating his birthday today.
00:07He turns 75, marking his 75th birthday, a milestone being celebrated nationwide
00:12with a series of welfare and service programs.
00:16BJP has rolled out fortnight-long Seva Pakwara with health camps, nutrition drives,
00:22cleanliness campaigns, cultural events being organized across the country.
00:26But the spotlight really will be on Madhya Pradesh, where the Prime Minister will spend his birthday in Dhar district,
00:32launching a series of welfare and development programs.
00:35Party leaders and supporters are sharing personal stories and tributes under the My Modi Story campaign.
00:42Modi, who began his journey as an RSS Pracharak and went on to become Gujarat's longest-serving chief minister
00:48before taking charge as the Prime Minister in 2014,
00:52is now one of India's longest-serving leaders at the centre.
00:56I'm going straight across to Salvatore Baboons, joining us right now, American sociologist.
01:07Thank you so much for your time.
01:09I want to begin by asking you your thoughts on Prime Minister Narendra Modi today
01:13as he marks his 75th birthday in India.
01:16Of course, this day is marked with celebrations and all kinds of work that is being done,
01:23especially in the field of health and welfare of the people of the country,
01:27with the Prime Minister himself participating in this.
01:30But your thoughts on the Prime Minister's birthday today, what would you want to say?
01:35Prime Minister Modi is the first child of independent India to become Prime Minister,
01:41and thus the first truly post-colonial Prime Minister that India has had.
01:46Now, that title, first post-colonial Prime Minister, means several things.
01:51It's not just a matter of his age and the fact that he turned 75 today or was born in 1950 in independent India.
01:57It also has to do with how he understands ordinary Indians' concerns.
02:01That is to say, he's the first Prime Minister who hasn't come out of the colonial era elite,
02:09the colonial aristocracy of India that, you know, organized the independence movement.
02:15They did fantastic things.
02:16They were leaders who made India what it is.
02:19But let's face it, the colonial era leaders were, for the most part,
02:22members drawn, people drawn from a very narrow elite.
02:26Prime Minister India, Prime Minister Modi, of course, comes from outside that narrow elite,
02:30has a clearer understanding, I think, of what ordinary Indians want and need in their lives.
02:35And maybe the best example is his focus on Swatch Bharat,
02:39which is not something that would really capture the imagination of a relatively elite Indian.
02:44But for somebody who's lived his life, well, beginning among the poor,
02:48but then lived his life among the poor throughout his years, rising up to become Prime Minister,
02:53something he would really understand,
02:55that sanitation is really crucial for the dignity of ordinary people,
03:00in a way that someone like me, who is born to privilege, doesn't really fully understand.
03:06True. You know, I also want to talk to you in this, in today's context,
03:11in the Prime Minister's birthday, we're looking at, you know,
03:13how the leader has been transformative in so many ways.
03:16But also, importantly, there's so much happening as far as foreign policy is concerned.
03:22Prime Minister Modi's diplomacy with focus on neighbourhood farce, you know,
03:26Atma and Nirbhata, or, you know, self-reliance in foreign policy is what stands out.
03:32In the last few days and weeks, we've seen the kind of pressure from America.
03:36Of course, we are back on the talking table in that sense.
03:39But there's so much pressure and the refusal of India, you know,
03:43under Modi to really succumb to that kind of pressure.
03:47How do you see this?
03:49What's really ironic is that Mr. Modi began his prime ministership
03:52with a laser-like focus on the neighbourhood,
03:56inviting the neighbouring prime ministers and heads of state to his inauguration
04:02to really connect with the neighbourhood, creating a neighbourhood policy.
04:06And yet that neighbourhood policy has been, let's be honest, has been largely unsuccessful.
04:12Instead, what Mr. Modi has done is establish a rapport with world leaders beyond the neighbourhood.
04:20So he's actually negotiated successfully India's relationship with the United States
04:24under different presidents.
04:25And believe me, it's very hard to get along with someone like Donald Trump,
04:31but also at the same time to get along with a Barack Obama and to get along with a Joe Biden
04:38and to be able to manage that relationship through these massive swings in US politics.
04:43Similarly, he's managed the relationship with Russia very well,
04:45despite the extreme circumstances of Russia's invasion of Ukraine
04:50and international sanctions on Russia.
04:52He's even managed the China relationship with Xi Jinping,
04:56again, despite actual border clashes.
04:58So the great irony is that although he came to office clearly with a programme to build India's neighbourhood,
05:06his actual success has been much farther abroad.
05:10Yeah, and also I would say, you know, not really in a way, like you said,
05:14it's difficult to have a working relationship with somebody, you know,
05:18perhaps as mercurial as Donald Trump.
05:20But we've seen and we've seen the prime minister really stand up to, in a way, bullies in that sense.
05:25I also want to ask you about our own, you know, muscular defence policy.
05:31We've seen Operation Sindhur.
05:32We've also, in fact, seen the Balakot airstrikes on giving Pakistan our enemies in a way,
05:37a befitting reply, which really has been the hallmark of the prime minister's tenure as well over the years.
05:43Isn't it something that was not seen before?
05:46Look, any Indian prime minister in an era of rising Indian power would be assertive vis-a-vis Pakistan.
05:54That's not really so surprising.
05:56What's surprising is that Narendra Modi was able to keep the rest of the world on side.
06:02I mean, contrast his performance with Benjamin Netanyahu in Israel.
06:06Netanyahu suffered, you know, an even more serious terrorist attack on his country,
06:10yet he lost control of the narrative and now is being, you know, facing a lot of condemnation globally.
06:16India, on the other hand, successfully navigated the strikes on its soil and retaliating
06:21without that retaliation being framed as Indian aggression.
06:26And believe me, Pakistan tried to frame India's retaliation as Indian aggression, but that failed.
06:32And I think that failure has a lot to do with the success of Narendra Modi in keeping the world on India's side.
06:40It should not be taken for granted that the world would support a victim of terrorism.
06:45Prime Minister Modi has made sure that it did.
06:48I'm going to leave it at that for the moment.
06:50And thank you for joining in today to talk about a range of issues involving Prime Minister Narendra Modi,
06:55the man who has been credited with, in fact, doing just so much for the country,
07:02inspiring a generation of Indians, of course, standing apart as far as his foreign policy is also concerned,
07:10his resolute political will and, in a way, you know, the strike power of armed forces,
07:17precision intelligence, muscular defence policy,
07:20and taking very difficult and tough calls on a range of issues that the Prime Minister has done
07:27over the last few years that we've seen.
07:34And big names from politics, cinema, businesses came together to share their personal encounters
07:40of Prime Minister Modi.
07:41From rare anecdotes to first impressions of the campaign,
07:44my Modi story is turning into a celebration of the leader's influence across sectors.
07:50Kundalini Pandoral, who made the role of the leader's vision,
07:52and the Mona Kivar and the Joseon Z et al.
07:55The leader wasindeed to deliver and his leadership speed in many three years,
07:58and the leader was money from make it through.
08:00Yes, author, the leader was divided into some sub-national events.
08:02He wanted to get into that and find that the leader.
08:09The leader was on their side of the leader.
08:11The leader is here to be that responsibility of the leader.
08:16The leader is made to大哥-de-de-de-de-de-de-de-de-de-de-de-de-de-de-de-de-de-de-de-de-de-de-de-de-de-de-de-de-de-de-de-de-de-de-de-de-de-de.
08:20People think that this is a work load, this is a big deal.
08:29Modi ji has not seen this.
08:31One-to-one, one-to-one, one-to-one, one-to-one, it's a great opportunity.
08:39I've never seen challenges from this.
08:43I feel like this is a great deal.
08:48This is not a good deal.
08:50It's not a good deal.
08:53I've never seen it.
08:57I've never seen it.
08:58We brought children to the country.
09:00The people of the country, the ministers of the country,
09:05they tell themselves that it's been a great operation in India.
09:10In such a minute detail, there is no need to think and do this, I can speak with this.
09:19Which country will be the best of your country?
09:22You will say that you have to do your head.
09:27If you don't have two points, you will tell the third point.
09:33And the next day, you will also send a teacher to you.
09:35You want to know that Lakshmiya and Gupta Ji's age is 100 years old and you want to meet them, so you will have to meet them.
09:41The people who have reached Gupta Ji, who have reached the path of Gupta Ji, who have reached the path of Gupta Ji.
09:48Now, for us, it is a great thing for the country.
09:51How much value of the people of the country?
09:54How much value of the people of the people of the party, how much value of the people of the party?
10:01The first impression of a person is very everlasting.
10:06And in that regard, their friendship, simplicity, or a person who has become a person who has become a person who has become a person who has become a person who has become a person.
10:22A person who has been in Banaras. It went into a busy day about 1.30 am.
10:32After that, when we go back, it was a crew. It was for 15 minutes to stop coming in the tunnels.
10:41So Pradhan Muntri Ji stood above. Then Pradhan Muntri Ji goes later.
10:46So Pradhan Uttri ji, Modi ji said that now I have to go to another work.
10:51So I thought that at night, which work will be saved at night.
10:59So I asked him to ask him, sir, which work will be saved at night.
11:05So at that time, he said that in Banaras,
11:10there are a lot of Vikaas's work and projects going on.
11:14I want to see those projects.
11:16When I go to the first day, people don't have to worry about it.
11:19They get jobs, they get jobs, they get jobs.
11:23So I told myself that after finishing all the work,
11:28after finishing all the work,
11:30I want to see all the Vikaas's work and projects.
11:34I met the first time in Lakhnao, when the U.P. Summit.
11:39He called out my name and came and shook my hands and wished me.
11:42This shows his open mindedness.
11:44That he didn't demarcate,
11:47that he invited people and people were invited from all walks of life.
11:52Which only speaks of his large heartedness.
11:55Under Modi ji's leadership,
11:57Bharat is on the path of becoming a Vishwa Vijayata,
12:00a world conqueror.
12:01Not by force, but by the strength of his vision
12:04and the depth of his connect with people.
12:06He may not speak every Indian language,
12:08yet he motivates every Indian from Kashmir to Kaniyatmari.
12:12Modi ji stands today as one of the world's most powerful global leaders,
12:16not only for his decisive leadership,
12:18but also for his visionary diplomacy
12:21and unwavering commitment to shaping the world into a true global village.
12:25What's the idea about Modi ji?
12:27I heard about Modi ji,
12:28when he was the chief minister of Gujarat.
12:30When I got the opportunity to make rocketry,
12:32I realized that Modi ji was the first person
12:35who recognized Nambi Narayanan.
12:39When he went to Kerala,
12:41he met himself with Nambi Narayanan.
12:43He said that everything will be fine with you.
12:46And he did.
12:47When he saw me the first time,
12:50and I was sitting with a big dance,
12:52then he said,
12:54he said,
12:55''Maharun ji,
12:57Nambi Narayanan are you?
12:58The shooting of the film started?
13:00He said,
13:01I've never said that this
13:03I can't even say that.
13:04And I got a selfie with them.
13:06We started the first time.
13:08We were the two of them.
13:11And I never said,
13:13that my prime minister knows what I'm doing,
13:16and I'm making a picture with whom,
13:18and I'm looking for whom.
13:21I'm the one of the people you know.
13:23When you were the chief minister of Gujarat,
13:25and I had come to your office in the office.
13:29and you were very happy with good and good.
13:33Then after that, I had seen my film in Gujarat in Ahmedabad,
13:38I wanted to do a special screening of my film.
13:42And I had given you a lot.
13:44And you had seen the film with all the Mantri Mandel and other people.
13:49I felt like your personality and personality.
13:53I gave a truth to you.
13:56You have a great sense of humour.
14:04You also laugh.
14:07And I really feel very, very inspired by you as a person, as a Prime Minister, as a Mark Darshak.
14:20Kia ora, namaskar, my good friend, Prime Minister Modi.
