00:38Bringing your sort of sensibility, even to this one scene, I mean, it stands out,
00:42because, I mean, you're in there with John, but yet there's such a humor,
00:45there's such a slyness in the way you play her.
00:48Could you sort of talk about that?
00:50Because it's a whole, look, I know, you know, that's just one or two days,
00:55but you put so much into that for that one scene.
00:58Oh, thank you.
00:59Could you talk about the importance of that?
01:00That really comes across.
01:01I had a blast on it.
01:03I mean, John's a great guy, and I've known Billy for many years,
01:07so it was like, cool, we get to go to camp in Tahiti and hang out.
01:10But the character was hilarious.
01:13I love that it's early on in the movie, and it's sort of like a departure, like,
01:19what's going on?
01:20But it shows the absurdity of what John's character had to deal with in this wild place.
01:27Think about, you know, now it's exotic and, you know, far-flung.
01:31Back then, it was wild, and you didn't know who you're dealing with and, you know,
01:38trying to get land rights.
01:40I mean, how could you, you know, trust the provenance of any document or any information that you get?
01:47So this is kind of a funny aside, you know, sort of like sidebar to, yeah, this could happen.
01:55And this did happen.
01:57So maybe not to the level that I added to it.
02:00I just wanted to make it into this funny, wacky scene because it was a standalone thing.
02:06But I think people really enjoy it.
02:08So it kind of sets a tone in and of itself.

02:58Like you'll have, you know, women in Polynesia and they'll, you know, because it's French Polynesia, what they would idealize is, you know, the French style.
03:06So she would want to have a chignon, even though, you know, her long, beautiful hair would have been gorgeous.
03:11But also it would have gotten tangled all in that breastplate of pearls that I had.
03:17So that's why I wanted to have it up and out of the way.
03:20And it was hot.
03:21But yeah, there is a regal stature to her.
03:24So between my shoes and my hair, I was probably like another foot taller, which is good.
03:30You know, I should be intimidating to John.
03:33All right.
03:34So as you know, the oceans cover 70% of the planet.
03:38But most humans only experience a fraction of it.
03:42Just, just what washes up on the shore.
03:45Now you, you may look out here and you may see an empty lagoon, but really it's, it's home to thousands of microorganisms.
03:55The whole aspect of land rights.
03:58I mean, the only other time, and I did interviews for that was The Descendants.
04:02The one that was set in Hawaii with Clooney.
04:05Yeah.
04:06And I mean, that was all about where there's 20 people that come and that say, this is my land.
04:11And that's such a huge thing.
04:13You know, it can you talk about looking at this film as like a balance of like reality showing the drama and the humor has a very specific tone.
04:22You know, you've been involved in a lot of films that sort of have that sort of balance.
04:27Could you talk about looking at tone and how that.
04:30Yeah, it's it's it's hard because I'm from Hawaii, so I have a very specific, you know, perspective that I see it through.
04:37And I think, you know, it's I love that he the, you know, created this eco friendly resort in the islands.
04:49That's fantastic.
04:50And I love that. That was visionary.
04:52I mean, Brando really much to the beat of his own drum.
04:55But it's it's sort of like I wish the local people could also have ownership of their own, you know, in Hawaii, in Honolulu in particular.
05:04For me, it's like everybody's priced out of paradise.
05:07My whole family doesn't live in Hawaii anymore because it's gotten so expensive there.
05:12And it's you know, it's commerce. It's capitalism.
05:15But it's a it's a trickle down effect of, you know, billionaires buying thousands of acres at a time.
05:21So.
05:22There's scarcity.
05:24The price goes up.
05:25People can't live anywhere near they where they work.
05:29My sister had to like drive an hour or something each way to get to work.
05:33And so she finally said, I got to get out of here.
05:36So it's it's I love that Brando kept it small, eco friendly, very localized.
05:44And he involved all the people on the island to work there.
05:48And it gave everybody jobs and things.
05:51And I wish that there was more of that in Hawaii.
05:53And there's over 200 varieties of plants and not to mention countless animals, which is why I want to build the hotel right here.
06:09And my last question, because of what this film does reflect his legacy.
06:13I mean, people think of legacy with Brando and everybody as you know, the actor.
06:18But the legacy is about family in many ways, you know, and legacy in in French Polynesia in Hawaii.
06:24Everything is about connection to family.
06:26Can you talk about the importance of that theme in the movie from your perspective?
06:31Yeah, family and the land and legacy.
06:36He had an acute awareness of this, which was unusual for what you would think of narcissistic, you know, actor, you know, Hollywood type.
06:44He advocated for the Native Americans.
06:47He advocated for, you know, Polynesian indigenous people, the the environment.
06:54So early on, he was the first person to put this on anyone's radar.
06:58And they thought he was a crackpot for it.
07:00But, you know, we see now he was visionary.
07:03He truly was Brando for Brando family was very important to him.
07:10And everybody in his community, in his in his village in, you know, Tahiti was his family.
07:17And they were a grounding influence.
07:19And, you know, as it is for me, you know, coming from Hawaii, my grandma's family had, you know, 13 kids, 11 that survived.
07:27And so her last living sister still lives in Hilo in the house that I visited when I was a child.
07:32And to go back there, it really it grounds you.
07:36It reminds you who you are, where you came from.
07:39And that connection to people and to the land.
07:43I think we could stand to have more of that in our modern world.
07:47We're so disconnected from the things that are most important.
07:51And I think it's it's it's caused a great deal of grief and a lot of lost kids in this particular generation.
08:02We're too far removed from where we came from, from our culture.
08:05The world's gonna judge us by our success.
08:07We gotta get this right.
