00:10His longtime publicist confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that he died in his sleep at his home outside Provo, Utah.
00:16Redford, the son of a milkman who later became an accountant,
00:19first considered a career in acting after dropping out of college at the University of Colorado and traveling around Europe.
00:25When he returned to the U.S., he studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.
00:29And not long after, made his on-screen debut in a 1960 episode of ABC's Maverick.
00:35Redford's early movies included his debut feature, 1960's Tall Story, and 1965's Inside Daisy Clover,
00:42which won him a Golden Globe as Best New Star.
00:44The actor launched to superstar status with 1969's Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,
00:50which he appeared in as the Sundance Kid opposite Paul Newman.

01:04Redford was also known for founding the Sundance Film Festival,
01:07which was named after his character in the film.
01:09He followed Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid with movies like 1969's Downhill Racer,
01:141972's Jeremiah Johnson,
01:161972's The Candidate,
01:181973's The Way We Were,
01:20and 1973's The Sting,
01:22for which he received his first Oscar nomination.
01:26He's gone.
01:33In 1976, Redford portrayed Watergate scandal reporter Bob Woodward
01:37in All the President's Men opposite Dustin Hoffman.
01:40And four years later,
01:54Redford tried his hand at directing with 1980's Ordinary People.
01:57The film went on to win Best Picture at the Oscars
02:00and win Redford an Academy Award for Best Director.
02:03His other directing efforts over the years included 1992's A River Runs Through It,
02:081994's Quiz Show,
02:10and 2000's The Legend of Bagger Vance, among others.
02:13Redford also continued acting into his 80s.
02:16His later films included 2001's Spy Game,
02:192014's Captain America The Winter Soldier,
02:22and 2019's Avengers Endgame.
02:24As news of his death broke Tuesday morning,
02:26an outpouring of admiration for Redford swept social media.
