00:00Terrorists Threaten Notre Dame Cathedral in Old Fake Video
00:04A video has gone viral on social media alleging that a Muslim terrorist group has threatened to burn the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris
00:15unless French authorities release Brahim Aoussaoui, a Tunisian citizen who killed three people in a terrorist attack in Nice in 2020.
00:24The video shows three masked men issuing their ultimatum before setting a model of Notre Dame on fire.
00:31They each bear a logo on their sleeves that resembles that of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, an Islamist group formerly led by Syria's President Ahmed al-Sharah.
00:40Your churches will be burned by God's will, one of the men says.
00:43It's been shared by numerous accounts on different social media platforms, including European politicians such as right-wing populist Polish MEP Dominik Taczynski.
00:54However, the video isn't anything new.
00:56A reverse image search shows us it first started circulating in January 2025 and was swiftly debunked at the time.
01:04Fact-checkers at France24 noted back then that the video was put out using anonymous channels and not using HTS's usual means of communication.
01:12The HTS logo featured on the sleeves doesn't fully match the real one,
01:17and the men appear to speak with an Egyptian accent in Arabic rather than a Syrian one.
01:21Some news outlets appear to have been fooled by the re-emergence of the video,
01:26with some of them since taking down their reporting on it.
01:29Its reappearance also prompted some social media users to share old videos of Notre Dame burning,
01:35claiming that the terrorists have already carried out their attack.
01:38However, the cathedral famously caught fire by accident back in April 2019,
01:43and that's what's depicted in these posts.
