00:00I'm Kelly Summers and this season I'll be asking some of the biggest names in football
00:05the questions they don't normally get asked, to find out more about the person behind the player.
00:11The first half will be on Football the Second, about their life away from the game.
00:16This isn't just any interview, this is the Football Interview.
00:20This week I'm joined by Mark Gahey.
00:30Mark, let's start with the reason that everyone knows who you are, because you're a footballer.
00:34Tell me what football means to you.
00:37Football is a big part of my life, it has been for a long time now.
00:42So yeah, it means a lot, it means the fact that I'm able to do something that I love every single day,
00:51able to provide for my family, able to meet friends, so yeah, it means a lot.
00:57What's your earliest memory of playing football?
01:00Because we know you came over to England when you were one,
01:04and obviously you can't remember back then I'm sure,
01:06but what are the first memories with the ball at your feet?
01:08Playing at the park with friends, used to do that as often as possible,
01:12and then through that my Sunday League team, Crow Wanderers,
01:16so the bright orange or yellow kit that we had stayed in my memory,
01:20so definitely those memories which were great, and I still hold them dear to my heart.
01:26Talk to me about some of the names of players and people that you remember playing with back then,
01:31because I'm sure you had little friends, people on your team that stand out.
01:33Yeah, Jaden, Marlon, Adam, James, McKenzie.
01:41We actually had a really good team to be honest.
01:43Has anyone else gone on to kind of have a career like yourself?
01:46From that team?
01:47Yeah.
01:47I don't think so.
01:49I'm the fortunate one.
01:52But that's not because I was better than anyone else.
01:54That was, no, no, no, I'll be honest, I was, Marlon was so good midfielder.
01:59He was at Arsenal's academy.
02:01Adam was at Chelsea's academy with me.
02:03So why are you here today then?
02:04How did you get to this point and not them?
02:06God's grace.
02:07Talent?
02:08Hard work?
02:09Hard work, I guess.
02:10Yeah, I wouldn't say there's anything in particular.
02:13Everyone's life goes different ways for whatever reason.
02:15You know, they could be doing amazing things right now.
02:19You know, who knows if football would have taken them down a different path.
02:22So, you know, I'm just fortunate that I'm in this position today.
02:25You have had an exceptional career today and you're only 25 years old.
02:29When you look back, is there a turning point or a point that you think really shaped your career?
02:33I'd say my time alone at Swansea was a big turning point, I guess.
02:39Coming from Chelsea's academy, going to such an amazing club that made me feel welcome from the beginning
02:44and not playing right away and having to sit on the bench and having not to travel to games
02:49and experience the difficult side of football definitely, I wouldn't say woke me up,
02:55but put me in my place, I guess.
02:59And that definitely helped me just understand the world of football a bit better.
03:03Was there any specific moment at Swansea or a conversation that you can think of that kind of made you go,
03:07OK, this is what I need to do or anything like that?
03:11I remember having a few conversations with Wayne Routledge and Nathan Dyer at the time,
03:16you know, two people that I look up to, two people who hurt me a lot,
03:19and they were just adamant that I should carry on being myself
03:23and just excelling in that area, because I think at the end of the day,
03:27if you're not yourself, then what's the point? Do you know what I mean?
03:30So, you know, having people like that helped me along the way definitely guided my path, I should say.
03:36Is there anyone in particular that you particularly owe your career to and the fact that you're here today?
03:42I'm thankful to God, obviously. He's helped me along the way, the whole way.
03:46But definitely my parents, for sure. They've sacrificed a lot, put food on the table when they probably couldn't.
03:57Dad driving me to training all the time, even though there wasn't a lot of petrol,
04:02and Mum making sure that I was OK, you know, so they've definitely helped me along the way from the beginning.
04:07The sacrifices that your dad must have made in particular, because he's a church minster as well, isn't he?
04:12So that must be tough for him to be able to balance being a footballer's dad, taking you to training and everything,
04:17and having set commitments with the church too.
04:19Yeah, I think for him, and I kind of mentioned it at the Euros last time, it's God first.
04:26You know, I think there was times when there were games on Sunday that I wasn't able to go to,
04:32because I had to be in church and completely understand that.
04:36But he understood that it was something that I love to do, understood that it was, I guess, a calling in a way.
04:42So, you know, for him to have done that and have been there from the beginning was amazing.
04:46What's it like for your dad now? If you play on a Sunday, does that mean he's at church and can't watch you?
04:50No, they go to church first.
04:52Church first, yeah.
04:53Yeah, the family goes to church first. Usually, I don't know, if it's Super Sunday, so what time is it?
04:562pm kick-off, so church will start at 10.30.
05:00So, finish church, church done at 12.30, and then they rush home,
05:04or rush to the stadium wherever it is, and then they come and watch me.
05:07Wow, still now to that point?
05:09Yeah, yeah, yeah.
05:10But then they managed to come to most of the games too?
05:12Yeah, most of the home, no away games, but most of the home games, yeah.
05:20Let's talk about Mark Gahey, the person then.
05:23You've already mentioned your family.
05:25I wanted to go back to your earliest childhood memory and what you really remember being at home.
05:29What was a usual day in the Gahey family like?
05:32Everyone was working, to be honest.
05:34Well, that says a lot, doesn't it?
05:35Yeah, I was at school, family, mum and dad were doing whatever, cleaning jobs at the time,
05:40or whatever they were doing, sisters running around, you get back home, and it's just jokes, laughter.
05:47Were you the joker, or were one of your sisters the joker?
05:50I'm more of the joker now.
05:51Now that they're a bit older and they can understand my jokes.
05:55But yeah, my sisters are very funny, very, very funny, yeah.
05:58They've got a good sense of humour.
05:59Talk to me about that family dynamic then, because it's your mum and your dad,
06:02and then have you got two sisters, is that right?
06:04Three younger sisters.
06:05Three younger sisters.
06:06Yeah.
06:06So what are you like as an older brother?
06:07What would they say about you?
06:09Not necessarily their older brother, if that makes sense.
06:11I don't act like their older brother.
06:12I wouldn't say I put myself on their level, but we all see each other the same.
06:16There's no real, oh, he's the older brother, yeah, by age,
06:19but we all act very, very childish around each other, very silly.
06:22We don't take each other seriously, constant jokes and making fun of each other,
06:27so yeah, it's good.
06:28Is it right you still live at home with them?
06:29Mm-hmm, yeah.
06:30Wow, why is that so important to you now?
06:32Because, of course, you've gone on to have this amazing career you've played
06:36at the highest level, but you're still living at home.
06:38Why was that so important to you to stay there?
06:40What is it you love about it?
06:42It's, um, one of my sisters, everyone's just funny.
06:47Good sense of humour.
06:48I get to be myself in a way, if that makes sense.
06:50And I feel like, I don't know, I don't know if I'm the only one
06:55that feels like this in football, but sometimes, not all the time,
06:57you have to put on a show, if that makes sense.
07:00You have to, not necessarily be someone you're not,
07:04but be an extension of yourself to kind of make it in this environment,
07:08because it is such a tough environment.
07:10Cutthroat, really difficult, you know, a lot of, you know, bravado
07:14and ego, in a way, which is all positive, and it's a good thing,
07:19but at the same time, when I'm at home, I can chill, I can be myself.
07:24And they're my foundation, you know what I mean?
07:27So they've always been there from the beginning.
07:29So, yeah, I just love being around them.
07:30How would they describe you?
07:31Because I bet if I asked one of your teammates to describe you,
07:34it'd be quite different from how your family describe you.
07:36Yeah, they'd call me a troll.
07:38A troll?
07:39Yeah, as in, like, I'm always trolling.
07:41I'm not serious, yeah.
07:42I come across very, very serious, which is, I guess so,
07:45but not to them, yeah, not to them.
07:47Uncle Mark?
07:49Yeah, that might be, yeah.
07:50To be honest, it's good.
07:52It comes across serious, but not too serious.
07:54Yeah, the Uncle Mark, so yeah.
08:00What do you like to do to escape from football?
08:03Music. I love music, love listening to music,
08:05and definitely learning different things.
08:09So whether it's, like, trying to learn DJing,
08:13I've tried to do that a little bit,
08:14or reading different books,
08:16or I love going to the movies, like to the cinema,
08:19because no one goes to the cinema,
08:20so it's nice to be in the cinema on your own, popcorn.
08:23No one talks to you.
08:24Yeah, it's just nice.
08:25So, yeah, just anything anybody else would do, I guess.
08:29Favourite film?
08:31Limitless. Bradley Cooper.
08:33I love that movie. I love Bradley Cooper.
08:35I love Limitless. What a great film.
08:37It would help at this point if I'd seen that film,
08:39to be able to know, but I haven't seen it.
08:40With the pill and, like, the NZT pill.
08:42I know the one you mean, but I haven't seen it.
08:43Yeah, you need to go and watch that.
08:44I love that film.
08:45So if that's what you would do on a day off from football now,
08:48are you a sociable person?
08:49Yeah, but I don't have many friends,
08:51so I know all my friends are either in different countries
08:54or live in Manchester, Liverpool,
08:57so it's hard to, like, connect and stuff like that.
09:00But, yeah, if people have time,
09:03then, yeah, I'll definitely be there.
09:04Let's go back to your music, then,
09:06because you mentioned there you've got a bit of DJing.
09:08Do you do that at home?
09:09I try to, yeah.
09:11So you've got decks at home, a little studio, is that right?
09:12I try to, yeah, I try to.
09:14I'm not saying I'm any, I'm not good.
09:15Are you trying to play it down?
09:15No, no, no, I'm trying, I'm trying.
09:17I'm not, before someone gets me, you know, DJing somewhere.
09:21And what about drumming?
09:22I'm told you were pretty good at drumming,
09:23and that's been something that's been in your life for a long time.
09:26Yeah, yeah, yeah, I drummed at church for a long time,
09:28drummed at school.
09:28I need to get a drum set.
09:31So you don't have one now?
09:31I don't have one, but I really want one.
09:32I think that's a really good way to just enjoy music and escape,
09:36and, yeah, really good.
09:37It sounds like escapism and escaping from football
09:40is something that's quite important to you in a good way.
09:43Yeah, and I think it's positive.
09:44You know, when you're in this environment 24-7, you know,
09:48wanting to win games, wanting to be the best,
09:50wanting to do everything for the fans,
09:52you need something that just takes your mind away from things
09:55just a little bit.
09:55And it always, in a way, it gives you a refresher,
09:59a way to, you know, restart and put yourself in the best position
10:04to go and, you know, get back into that, you know, mindset.
10:07Again, so it's really good, I think.
10:09I asked you about your family,
10:10but how would your best friends describe you?
10:13Oh, good question.
10:16Childish.
10:17Like, very, very childish.
10:18There's a theme there, isn't there?
10:19Yeah.
10:20You like to be Mr. Serious here,
10:22and then when you're away from the cameras,
10:25away from the football pitch.
10:26Away from the cameras, yeah.
10:28Away from the cameras, but, yeah, just childish, not serious.
10:32Yeah, I think that's what they'd say.
10:35Let me take you back to the books as well.
10:36Favourite book.
10:38What type of books do you like reading?
10:40Oh, any.
10:41Any non-fiction fiction.
10:43Favourite book, I'd say...
10:45Fahrenheit 451.
10:48Ray Bradbury.
10:49Top.
10:49What's that book about?
10:51It is about...
10:52I don't want to give it away too much,
10:54but it's in a future world
10:56where firefighters don't put out fires,
10:59they start fires.
11:00Wow, OK.
11:01And they're burning books, basically,
11:04burning all the knowledge in the world,
11:05and there's this one firefighter
11:07that is questioning that.
11:09Yeah, so I don't want to give too much away,
11:10but, yeah, a really good book.
11:11OK, recommend it if you're watching this.
11:15I also wanted to ask you,
11:16you've achieved so much in your career already
11:18in terms of winning with England,
11:20in terms of at youth levels,
11:21winning with Chelsea at youth levels.
11:22You're an FA Cup winner now as well.
11:24You've played at the highest level.
11:26Is there one match
11:27that particularly stands out from your career?
11:30Any game?
11:31Any game.
11:33You've surprised me already
11:34because I thought you'd say one in May.
11:36It was quite a big one.
11:37The FA Cup one?
11:37Yeah.
11:38No, no, no.
11:39Maybe not because of...
11:40Not for me, not for me.
11:40I was going to say, actually...
11:41Not for me.
11:42No, it was great,
11:42but, I mean, that's more for...
11:44I see that more for the football club
11:46and the fans.
11:47I'm just really happy for them,
11:49as opposed...
11:50But for me,
11:51I don't think I have one.
11:52If I'm being honest.
11:54Just because I think that's...
11:54There's none that stand out?
11:55No, I think that's to come.
11:57I don't see that.
11:58Okay.
11:59There will be one to come
12:00at some point in my career,
12:01but not now.
12:02What are you most proud of
12:03from your career so far?
12:05It doesn't have to be football related to it.
12:06Yeah, just the fact that I've kept going.
12:09I'd say I'm very hard on myself
12:11and I like it that way.
12:13It keeps me on my toes,
12:14keeps me grounded,
12:15keeps me focused
12:16and wanting to improve.
12:17But just the fact that I've kept going.
12:19Not from any outside noise or anything,
12:22but just the pressure that I put on myself.
12:24I'm quite demanding.
12:25So the fact that I've
12:26almost, in a way,
12:28battling out with myself
12:30and I've kept going
12:31is a good thing.
12:32I've asked you how your family
12:33would describe you.
12:34I've asked you how your best friend
12:35would describe you.
12:36How do you describe yourself?
12:39Don't say a troll.
12:40No, not a troll.
12:42Not a troll.
12:43I'd say,
12:45I don't know,
12:47work to do.
12:49Always looking forward, aren't you?
12:51I have to.
12:52I don't,
12:52I can't sit still, basically.
12:55Okay, tell me one thing about yourself
12:58that would surprise me
13:00or anyone watching this.
13:01Maybe that we don't know about you.
13:02Do you know what?
13:03I feel like most of,
13:04most of my business
13:05is out in the world anyway.
13:07At this point.
13:08Do you know what?
13:08I would love to be like
13:10a WWE wrestler
13:11or something like that, you know?
13:12That was not what I was expecting.
13:14Why?
13:14What is it about that
13:15that appears to you?
13:15Oh, I don't know.
13:16Just growing up,
13:17watching WWE.
13:18Just want to live out
13:18your childhood dream.
13:19It's actually on Netflix now.
13:20Do you watch it?
13:22I've seen some like
13:23pay-per-views and stuff there.
13:24Well, the ones on Netflix,
13:25yeah, some of them.
13:26Okay.
13:26I would love to be like
13:27a WWE wrestler.
13:28It can be dangerous.
13:29It's obviously,
13:29it is scripted,
13:31but it's like really...
13:32I was going to say,
13:32the performance side of it.
13:32Yeah, the performance side of it.
13:34Being able to just waffle.
13:35I feel like I'm a good waffler
13:36on the mic
13:37and making people believe
13:39that you're the bad guy
13:40or the good guy.
13:41And finally,
13:41trying to bring it back
13:41to something serious now.
13:43If you could achieve
13:44one more thing in your career,
13:45what would you want it to be?
13:47Play till I'm 40.
13:49Wow.
13:49Hmm.
13:50Just longevity then?
13:51Yeah.
13:51Obviously, winning trophies is great,
13:53playing in different competitions,
13:54but I think that's the real testament
13:55to how professional someone is.
13:59Obviously,
14:00there's going to be injuries
14:01and that's always unfortunate,
14:02but, you know,
14:04God winning,
14:04I can play for that long,
14:06in a sport that is,
14:08you know,
14:08so like fleeting.
14:09No wonder you want to be
14:10described as childish
14:11and describing you
14:12trying to stay young,
14:12aren't you?
14:13Always.
14:13You have to.
14:14That's what we're all trying to do.
14:15Very true.
14:16That's what we're all trying to do.
14:17Mark, thank you so much
14:18for your time.
14:19I look forward to seeing your career
14:20post-40 as a WWE wrestler.
14:25Thank you very much.
