00:00so we will take some questions in English first and we'll start with Alex Howe here
00:24thank you 42 clean sheets in 100 appearances it's been a great couple of seasons for you at the club isn't it
00:38yeah of course I think it was just on the or maybe maybe two years ago I made my debut against
00:45Everton and from there it's just been it's just been incredible you know being part of this football
00:50club and having that record as well in 100 games with 42 clean sheets is incredible but that just
00:57goes to the credit to the to the team to the staff that how work how hard we work to to try and defend
01:04us the much better as possible to to try and win games reached the semi-finals of the competition
01:11last year how what's the feeling like coming into a new campaign in the Champions League yeah we did
01:16an incredible campaign last year we we were short we lost again the PSG the the current holders of
01:23the Champions League so we want to to him higher this this season and that's what we want to do
01:29a lot's been made of Arsenal's squad depth a lot of signings in the summer and there's also been a
01:35sign in your position as well with with Kepa I was just wondering what that has been like with so
01:39much quality coming into the squad well the new sign is they have a key role just to to improve
01:48their squad to improve the depth especially what happened last season with the injuries that we
01:52had and and the depth it was a little bit short and then the club did a magnificent job to to
01:59recruit a lot of players really good players and they're going to be a key key part of the success of
02:04this club David happy birthday thank you we'll mention that Kepa coming in he's put the first
02:11goalkeeper that's been signed permanently since you were signed so it's in some ways perhaps more
02:15pressure in that position do you kind of relish that competition when you've got someone on a
02:19similar level or pushing you for that role well we know we are we are Arsenal and competition is all
02:25over the place you always have and you need competition to to take everything to take out everything
02:32good in each player and that competition is very very very healthy you know Kepa me we have we have
02:40a really good relationship we know each other from the national team and it's a pleasure to to share
02:45the dressing room with him before the forest game we heard from Mikel and he said that he was hammered
02:51when he brought you in in the sense he was scrutinized criticized for bringing you in do you feel
02:56like you vindicated his decision to sign you well I just I came here to to do a step further on my
03:04career and I think it was the right decision we know that when I came in obviously Aaron was was the
03:12goalie and he was playing and then similar situation and with other keepers that have come to a club to
03:17to push the other goalie or the other the other players and I just tried to do my best on the pitch
03:25off the pitch and just give the reason to the to the boss to pick me to play games so that's what
03:32that's what I would like to do hi David you grew up in Catalonia but obviously a lot of your teammates
03:40particularly those from the national team are from the region and Basque and especially Real Sociedad
03:45has been much discussion about that in the build-up to this game and like what what are your own kind
03:49of impressions of the region's football and the rivalry well obviously I have a good relationship
03:56as well with with some teammates in the national team that play here as well so they know they're
04:03obviously through Mendy and and Marina they have a relation like they played in Real Sociedad so they
04:10had that rivalry against athletics so we've just been discussing that people that that never never
04:16been been here or never heard about the place how how the fans are here and how hectic is going to
04:22be and how nice is going to be so we're looking forward to to the challenge we're looking forward to play
04:27tomorrow hi David you talk about the depth it's probably one of the strongest squads that you've
04:35ever been a part of and looking around for the rest of Europe Arsenal seem to have one of the strongest
04:40squads in Europe how much confidence can you take going into that knowing that you have that power not
04:46just in the starting 11 but on the bench as well to make the difference oh it's important it's really
04:50really important to have that depth I think there's a there's a lot of talking about not talking maybe
04:57like a statistics about the finishes or the people that come from the bench that change games and
05:01there's a lot like the other day like Leo first of all he touches he gets an assist so they're really
05:06really important no matter who who plays the 11 they start in 11 is just every single player that goes
05:13into that pitch and he trains with with everyone and and just pushes pushes push each other so it's
05:20really important to have that depth that that will make the team and the club better and that's really
05:26really important to have and as you said last season you were a bit short so he couldn't maybe rotate as
05:30much is that as a team what you've now got to learn that you need to rotate and the manager needs to be
05:37able to rotate and it won't necessarily be a consistent starting 11 throughout a whole season I'll leave that to
05:42the boss that's his decision so but I think it has it has a lot of quality players in each position
05:48no not just one player or two players in this one position there's like five or six players that can
05:53play in different positions so I leave that to the boss and just finally what did you learn personally
05:59from last year's Champions League campaign getting that far and and losing out in the semi-finals
06:03that it hurts a lot losing in the semi-final that's that's one things that that you you learn but
06:10obviously you get more mature um this is the third year in a row that we we are in the Champions League
06:16we went in the Champions League or I think the last in 2016 I think was the last time before
06:22before this period so we are so happy to be here we are so happy to play this competition and and we
06:29just have to take it game by game but um it's just incredible to be here basically David hello sorry just
06:36you talk about the pain of losing to PSG in the semi-final but Arsenal it feels like you're so close as a team
06:42so it's just is there the belief this season that you're talking in the dressing room about
06:47the Champions League and the Premier League this is your year you're here to win it this season
06:51we are uh we have belief we we want to win we are Arsenal and we play to win so that's that's not a
06:59doubt um that's what we want to do and and that's what we play football for um but right now we are in
07:06September it's a it's a long journey it's a it's a long season in the Champions League and in the
07:11Premier League so uh we are just focused on on the present uh focus on the game tomorrow and just go
07:17step by step and one thing about Spain is they always produce great midfielders so Xavi and Iesta
07:22Rodri you've played with your national team what's your first impressions of Zubomendi in an Arsenal shirt
07:28please he's incredible uh obviously I've shared uh dressing room in the national team and now that's
07:35here he's even surprised me even more so he's he's a player very very intelligent um he knows how to
07:44to play for the team he doesn't play for himself and his positioning defensively and attacking is
07:52is incredible so it's a pleasure to have him yes sir hi David obviously when you first joined Arsenal
07:59there were a few tricky moments at the very beginning and then you've obviously overcome that to
08:02win Golden Gloves and the rest speaks for itself how did you overcome those tricky periods at the start
08:10and was there times where you actually felt the noise and pressure or did you always assume that
08:15it'd get to this point that you're at now well we obviously when I when I came to Arsenal it was a lot of noise
08:22of course um there was a lot of talk outside and and everything and and it's understandable
08:29having Aaron is a hell of a a hell of a keeper and from nowhere I just get changed uh obviously the media
08:37is going to be going to be noisy and and there was a few games where I could have done better like
08:42everybody has bad games and and the noise it was a starting game a bit bigger so it just I just had to
08:49focus on myself focus on on what I can control and what I cannot control and the things I can control
08:54is on the pitch um off the page I just tried to be death basically uh not to listen anything about
09:02about what's happening it just focus on my football um on and off the pitch so that's what I did and
09:07I just believe in myself and I think the like you said the two years that has played for Arsenal has
09:14been it's been incredible and and I'm looking for more you're now obviously one of the top goalkeepers
09:20in the Premier League another top goalkeeper has just arrived John Gianluigi Donnarumma you played
09:24against him obviously last season against PSG and he pulled off a variety of good saves obviously you play
09:31City next uh weekend how good of a goalkeeper is he and what did you obviously notice about him when
09:37you when you played against him well if you've seen the game yesterday that's that's your answer there
09:43um you know sometimes it takes a little bit longer to to settle into into a club and into a league and
09:49then he's just been he played the first game yesterday and it's like he's been here for for so many years
09:54years and and that that tells you what type of goalkeeper he is how good he is and an experience
10:00that he has so it's so good to have those type of keepers in in this league and and playing against
10:05those keepers is is a challenge and boys is a joy to to to play against um he's one of the best in
10:12the world he showed the last last season for me it was it was very determinant to for PSG last season that
10:20i give them the the champions league so um just happy to to have him in the premier league and
10:25looking forward to play against him hello is it david or david i've gone through so many times
10:33depending on which country you're in um happy birthday thank you uh there's an increasing spanish
10:39influence in the dressing room um it seems every transfer window that goes by as well as obviously
10:43having uh manager and coaching team from spain there's more and more players coming from spain and
10:49also spanish-speaking countries like in keppia for example can you explain what sort of special
10:54qualities you think maybe come from the spanish culture of football or mentality that you think
11:02can help in a dressing room like arsenals i think um like the type of players that we have um they're very
11:11very intelligent they they read the game very well they they know what on each situation what the game
11:18needs um for example uh michael merino he he can play so many different positions that he understands a lot
11:28the game on and he tries to help the team as much as possible say with with fulimendi and and we know
11:35that there's been more more players in from spain especially when i arrived that was the only one and
11:41and two years later we we signed a few more players from from spain but now it's a joy to to have them
11:48on board especially um they're so good on the ball and off the ball and on the pitch and off the pitch so
11:54that's i think that's one of the the treats that we have from the communication point of view within
11:58the dressing room do you sometimes find yourself it would be natural to sort of speak a bit of both with
12:03the spanish guys or is there a kind of need to try and speak english we speak whatever on the pitch i
12:09think um whatever comes to our heads and and we have a lot of players down there not even not just
12:15the spanish boys that that speak spanish um there's a lot of players that speak spanish and and there's
12:21a lot of spanish going on in training and and outside and as i think it's something that um for people
12:28that don't speak english from that they're learning english now is i think the the adaptation is a
12:34bit is a bit quicker so that's really really good from from the team and from the players i think
12:40particularly with for example mosquera and hincapia that that's going to be really helpful for them
12:44in their adaptation process yeah that's that's going to be very very important i think it's a key
12:49key moment for them to to learn english as quick as possible but to have that assurance that it goes
12:55to the pitch that it goes to the pitch without not understanding anything so that's something that
13:00is going to be very very important for them thank you thank you do we have any questions in spanish
13:04good david now no quiere grab buenas tardes felicidades

15:22Yes, it is.
15:23He does not need to say what I think about him.
15:27He is a person who has guarantees both here and in the selection, which are incredible.
15:35It is a pleasure to share the dressing room with him in the selection.
15:41And tomorrow it is a pleasure to share the field with him.
15:46Okay guys, so we have time for.
15:47Thank you very much.
16:20Good evening everyone.
16:21Hope everyone is well.
16:22How are you?
16:23Okay.
16:24If you have a question, raise your hand and we will come to you.
16:25Looks like we are ready.
16:26We will come to Alex from the BBC UK first.
16:27Hi Mikel.
16:28Alex.
16:29Just speaking to David Vrij there about the campaign you had last season in the Champions
16:41League.
16:42What is the feeling coming into this one?
16:43I am very excited to start again from scratch in a beautiful place in the stadium that is
16:50going to generate something special.
16:52We are looking forward to that and I am very excited again to step by step and start to
16:57build some momentum and start to have some wins.
17:00Can I just ask about a couple of fitness issues you have in the squad.
17:06William Saliba trained today but it didn't seem to be Martin Odegaard.
17:09Is he available?
17:10No.
17:11So Gabby, Kai, Ben and Martin are still out unfortunately.
17:17And this season there seems to be a lot of talk about the way teams are playing.
17:21A lot more set pieces, long throws and maybe a more direct nature in football.
17:27Why do you think that is your team that have been taking advantage of those set pieces and
17:31throws for a while?
17:32Evolution of the game.
17:33The game is faster, the space is a little smaller and everybody is trying to take advantages
17:37from other aspects of the game that are obviously key actually to win football matches
17:43and at the end you have to dominate nowadays everything in football to give yourself the
17:48best chance to win the games.
17:50Miguel from the Independent.
17:51Miguel, you have spoken a lot in the last week about being from the area, how great Bilbao
17:55is.
17:56You played a minute here as a Real Sociedad player.
17:59Do you still kind of feel that or is there any sense of that rivalry coming into this experience
18:03for you?
18:04Because obviously there is actually quite a strong Real Sociedad contingency.
18:07Yes, of course.
18:08We land in Bilbao, that is normally where I land when I go back home to San Sebastian
18:11is an hour drive from there, all my family is from there and you just sense the passion,
18:18the rivalry, the football atmosphere and it is great to be here.
18:23I have never been in this stadium before, so good experience.
18:26Hi, Miguel.
18:27Can I just check, has Martin flown out with the team or is he back home?
18:32No.
18:33Just how important, I know you have spoken about it before this season, but rotation, especially
18:38this year in the Champions League.
18:39Is it a case that we are not going to see the same starting XI in every game in the Champions
18:44League because there is a chance to rotate and give other players a rest and other players
18:48a chance?
18:49Yes.
18:50Well, it would depend on the availability of the squad, the form of the players now.
18:54Unfortunately, we have a few players already out, so that is already limited in certain
18:59positions, but hopefully we come to the point that the competition and the level of performance
19:04of the players is that high that we are able to do that very efficiently to win more football
19:09matches.
19:10That is the objective.
19:11And with Kai and Gabi out, kind of victors on his own up there, are you going to have a
19:14chance to be able to rest him at all and bring other players into that role?
19:18Or do you think he is going to have to leave the line now for a while without a real rest?
19:23Well, let's see it against the Forest at the end.
19:27Mikel played 2009.
19:28We have Leo can play there.
19:30We have all the options and all the formations that we can adjust to that.
19:33At the moment, Victor is doing really well, so I am really happy with that.
19:38Hi, Mikel.
19:39Do you have any updates on Mikhail Saka, where he is with his injury?
19:43No, I think there is still quite a lot of things to go through.
19:46Very early to understand when and which week he is going to be available.
19:51But he will certainly be pushing to be available as quick as possible.
19:55Your team, of course, reached the semi-finals last season in this competition.
19:59This time around, with the squad that you've got now, you've spent £250 million and the
20:03reinforcements you've got in all positions, do you now see this as a moment where you can
20:07go one step further and possibly get to the final, win the competition maybe?
20:11Yeah, like the rest of the teams that they have done the same and they continue to do that
20:15and they've won it in many occasions.
20:17That's the aim in the beginning, but we all know that it's going to be a really long journey.
20:23The margins in this competition are super small and you have to be at your very best from day one
20:28to give yourself the best possible chance.
20:30And what in particular did you learn from the competition last season, which you're going to take into the competition this time around?
20:35That we are good enough that we can compete against any opposition on the day.
20:40And on top of that, things have to go your way.
20:43You need to have a full squad available when it comes to the most critical moments in the season.
20:48And then as well, when the ball has to go in the right moment or with the right decision,
20:53it has to be as well because the margins are so small.
20:56Amy Athletic.
20:57Hi, Mikel.
20:58Was part of the strengthening in a lot of numbers this summer down to that feeling when you're in the semi-final
21:04and your numbers are short and you think, I don't want to be here next year,
21:07where you're struggling to put out your best team when it counts?
21:10Well, when we were training, we had eight or nine fifth players.
21:14And we're going to games with 13 players.
21:16And at that level, it's extremely difficult.
21:19But I think even with that condition, we did really, really well.
21:22We gave ourselves an unbelievable chance and we were very unlucky in the semi-final not to get through.
21:28David Ra was just here and he was talking about how much it almost seemed to still hurt
21:32when he thinks about the semi-final and being in that position.
21:36I hate to take you back to that moment, but how much does it drive you to have that experience
21:42as a young manager where you get so close to the top of the mountain?
21:46Well, it is that.
21:47And that moment you get deflated and you have to understand what you need to do
21:51to put yourself back in the same position and start actions actually that matter
21:56to give yourself the chance to achieve that.
21:59And that's it.
22:00You take a lot of learnings from it.
22:01It's painful because it's not only what we feel.
22:04It's about the expectation that we created and the real conviction that we had within the club,
22:10the team that we could go all the way because we showed a very high level of consistency
22:17and quality throughout the competition and learn from it and try to be better.
22:22Okay.
22:23A couple more in English and we'll go to Spanish questions.
22:24George from BBC.
22:25Michael, hello.
22:26Sorry.
22:27Just the way you started the season, do you sense from the players that after the heart
22:30of last season, they're ready to win the Champions League?
22:33And you mentioned…
22:34But it's not that simple.
22:35I mean, you are so willing to do and you want to be better.
22:38I sense a very clear intention that they want to be better every single day.
22:44And that's the start and the end.
22:46And there is nothing else to control, create the energy, the belief amongst the players,
22:51the understanding and the feeling that we can compete against any opposition.
22:55And yeah, certainly they have that.
22:58You mentioned about flying into Bilbao.
23:00So is all of your family coming to this match tomorrow?
23:03All of them?
23:04No, but a big majority will come and I'm really looking forward to that.
23:10Mark ESPN.
23:11Hi, Mikel.
23:12Hi.
23:13You're getting a lot of questions about winning the Champions League and understandably
23:15it's the start of the season, but Arsenal are probably the biggest club that's never won it.
23:19Is there a pressure that you feel with that because Liverpool have won it multiple times,
23:23Manchester United, Chelsea?
23:25You want to win it obviously, but how important is it to win that first one for Arsenal?
23:28Well, that tells you with our long history how difficult it is because we haven't won it yet.
23:32And that's the opportunity.
23:34That's how I see it.
23:35It's a pressure.
23:36It's the opportunity that thrives that energy, that willingness to be better every single day,
23:40to make decisions that are in that direction.
23:44And every decision, if we win it that much, every decision has to be with that standard
23:49and with those expectations.
23:51And let's give our best chance to try to do it.
23:54And do you feel that going close actually helps?
23:56I mean, you worked with Pep Guardiola at Man City for a few years when they were knocking
23:59on the door.
24:00Does that disappointment ultimately help you get over the line?
24:02Yeah.
24:03And the big clubs, I mean, they try seven, eight, nine times, they win two.
24:06So in this competition, it's going to be one and you fail much more than you succeed.
24:10That's the nature of that.
24:11That's the history of our club.
24:13And that's what we want to change.
24:15Okay.
24:16Some questions in Spanish.
24:17First, Johan from Marco.
24:18Yes, Miquel.
24:19Buenas.
24:44Gracias.
28:33Ok, last two questions. First of all, there's a gentleman here and then Garnt down the glasses.
28:37Sí, Miquel. Hola, buenas tardes. Javi Beltrán, Diario AS.
29:26Perdón. Bienvenido a casa. Gracias.
29:48OK. OK, guys, thank you very much.
29:50Yeah.
29:51Gracias.
