00:00Over a decade ago, the nation fell in love with a school in Yorkshire.
00:06When I browns, you should have told me I browns on.
00:09This is a coffee, coffee. Keep me awake, you know.
00:12And an inspiring English teacher, Mr. Burton.
00:15It's the same moment when the trees are loose.
00:18Bloody hell. That's insane.
00:21Now, ten years on, Mr. Burton's been promoted to head teacher.
00:26Shirts in, ties on, coats off.
00:28Slide the smirk off your face now.
00:31Don't make myself clear.
00:32You should be really, really, really proud of your achievements.
00:35In that time, we've had six prime ministers.
00:38A global pandemic.
00:40That's a bit dramatic.
00:41And Huddersfield Town have been in and out of the Premier League.
00:45Now, the cameras are back.
00:47These lot are insane.
00:49To capture the new challenges.
00:51Get rid of Snapchat, TikTok, get rid of Instagram.
00:54Facing the school.
00:55I'm not a therapist, you know.
00:57No!
00:58He said, leave me alone.
00:59I can tell you, you don't want me here.
01:00We do want you here, pal.
01:01It's a difficult world that we live in now.
01:03And it's a difficult world to grow up in.
01:05But these are moments that, hopefully, children will look back on.
01:08And the years to come and think, actually, I learned a lot from that school.
01:11Call me fat sly.
01:12Come on.
01:13How old are we?
01:14Five.
01:15Can we just talk about the fact that you kissed my ex-boyfriend?
01:18So we spent a year.
01:19I love him so much.
01:20Seeing the troubles.
01:21No.
01:22Tears.
01:23There's so much to do.
01:24It's toxic.
01:25It's dragging you down the wrong path.
01:27And triumphs.
01:28You little legend.
01:30Ready?
01:31Woo!
01:32Through the eyes of the staff.
01:34You've committed a criminal offence.
01:36And the students at the very start of adult life.
01:41My aim is to inspire you to achieve your goals.
01:45Time flies when you're having fun, baby cakes.
01:49Baby cakes?
01:50That was the most mentally exhausting three months of my entire life.
01:55Life would be so much easier working in a school if there were no students.
01:59Welcome to the world of education!
02:02Year 10 at Thornhill is a year where students often face a lot of big changes.
02:18Morning girls.
02:19You alright?
02:20Being in year 10 is a really tricky age.
02:24They are starting a new chapter in their life.
02:27That does set off a new set of expectations, a new level of scrutiny.
02:31It's a time in your life where relationships with friends and family are often morphing
02:45and changing into something very, very different.
02:47Where did the crisp hit him?
02:49In his eyes.
02:50In his eyes.
02:51And probably their understanding of themselves is changing hugely.
02:54I found a ruler.
02:55Turn it around.
02:56No.
02:57No.
02:58No.
02:59The ruler.
03:00It's like a magician came in and gave a voice to a Labrador or something.
03:04It's also the start of a journey that will end up with that brown envelope full of GCSEs.
03:09And that becomes really scary, really quickly for a lot of those young people.
03:12Ooh!
03:13Can't be bold words.
03:14Can't be bold words.
03:15It says stop!
03:16It's period one, science.
03:18Ah!
03:19Go outside!
03:20Take your goggles off and go outside.
03:22it's a stop it's period one science thank you
03:30ah go outside take goggles off and go outside
03:39gets a bit crazy in the lab keep that on your eyes 14 year old Scott had a difficult year
03:45nine at Thornhill but it's full of good intentions for year 10 in year nine I
03:51won't get in a lot of detentions like nearly every day it's got make start now
03:56please thank you but yeah 10 you just hit me with everything I think I need to
04:02settle down now I'll calm down a bit you've got ionic compound what's an ion
04:06Scott and that is a charged part of a charged particle excellent that is
04:12literally it Scott is really strong at science and he really enjoys it I
04:16think he's more able than he thinks he is but he's very easily distracted there is
04:21a required practical to do and I want to get on with it as quickly as possible I
04:24am gonna let you work with who you want to work with you don't need to go makes no
04:29one else wants to work with Scott so it's fine and no one else gonna choose key on
04:32so you can definitely work together
04:35what's the face for what I'm gonna look like talking to me to be honest wow go
04:40outside what go outside you've just taken me go outside oh thanks what's the first
04:49thing I do wrong what's the first thing you do wrong first thing you do Scott does
04:57sometimes cross the line and it can definitely be a big distraction in the
05:01class stop talking I wish I could actually teach at the end of the day we
05:05are here trying to get a GCSEs and I am a teacher not a comedian or a
05:11children's entertainer
05:15so I've seen that's not all I'm really sorry we need to remember that I am a
05:20teacher and your student that's the only thing I'm okay so I have to do this a few
05:23times that night yeah it's re-establishing boundaries yeah all right
05:26sound come on out of class Scott's rarely without his best mates Alfie
05:36Medan and Keogh they're often found working off their excess energy in the
05:43Thornhill corridors yeah get done I got boys mate we love wind each other up it's
05:49literally what we do all day every day if it's like hitting each other smacking
05:54each other taking some off each other it's just do whatever we can to end
05:57each other up if I'm with people that I find funny I just tend to start just
06:03misbehaving when was the last time you got in trouble today they are just your
06:09typical teenage boys let's just leave him let's just leave let's just leave the
06:12boisterous and the daft they just try and just find anything that'll push a
06:19button when we're together it's like we all feed off each of us oh most of the
06:27time we go too far the year 10 boys are in the canteen
06:33today Scott's not with them his friends have wound him up and he's now
06:50roaming the corridors having lost his temper
07:03mr. young I'm just gonna log abusive language from Scott H you pick him up
07:08please when I get angry I don't really think whatever coming into my brain I
07:26need to do it I'll just do I'll go and read the right act let's go it's happening
07:32too much is this the kid banged the door in my face you're not gonna walk around
07:35school shouting and swearing at people I'm gonna level with you Scott your
07:40behavior at the moment he's nowhere near where we need it to be I'm trying to
07:44get out of trouble with everyone's falling in it no all right sir all right Scott
07:48what's going on was the thing what I'm learning about stories that you hold all
07:54this frustration in mm-hmm and then it just comes out but when you look at your
07:59friendship circle and Alfie and Keon and all the rest of it it's a lively mix of
08:06social time it's toxic and it is dragging you down the wrong path because if you
08:12cannot conduct yourself in the right way if you can't be a leader in your year
08:15group Scott it isn't gonna work out I tried getting away from no no no no you
08:22are swearing on a corridor and then you're refusing to do what I'm telling you to
08:25do it is not acceptable you don't know how much is going on I think you'd be
08:31surprised at how much I do know is going on yeah no clue so that means that you
08:35can swear at people in school does it no no I shouldn't swear yeah yeah you're
08:39absolutely right you shouldn't be and if the only thing in your life that's a
08:42positive at the moment is the opportunity that you have got to be a
08:45professional sports person right now it looks to me as if you are setting that
08:49piece of paper right on fire and if you think I won't pick the phone up and speak
08:54to your coach and let the Academy know exactly how you're behaving then you've
08:58got another thing coming
09:01you can shake your head all you like Scott but that's how it goes I am quite
09:08tough on Scott because I expect the best from him because what we do need to keep
09:12an eye on his his potential and his potential is fantastic go on then Scott
09:17Scott is a gifted rugby league player outside school he's at a professional
09:23clubs academy the Bradford Bulls
09:30he's got this exceptional exceptional talent that can be his career the club are
09:38in regular contact with the school to check on Scott's progress if he's not
09:44behaving he risks being released by them it's I'm proper proper annoyed it does
09:50get overwhelming but you just want to be left alone
09:55gentlemen just leave sensibly he said to me he was vaping but he threw it in the bin why would
10:10you have a lighter yeah he said for candles but candles no I thought my reaction I said why
10:16have you got scented candle in your classroom or something a bit of ginger
10:20spice for festive period just before I started high school my mum she bought
10:37us mr. Burton's book for going into high school and then she made me get them
10:44signed and I asked my PE teacher can you ask mr. Burton if you can sign these books but I
10:49want it anonymous I don't want him to know it was me and she's like oh yeah
10:51absolutely she went outside with the books then ten minutes later he ran in
10:56saying so Alexa I hear you my biggest fan you want me to you know get all your
11:01books signed I was like I wanted to die
11:05what's it like having a famous headmaster I mean I want to say he's famous but
11:11blows his own trumpet quite a lot you're walking down the corridor be nice work out work out be nice it's a
11:18good message but it's still mine he's always shoving it down his necks Scott's
11:23classmate Alexa is one of year 10's keenest students mr. Burton makes fun of me
11:29because he thinks I'm from an American sitcom because I volunteer at the church
11:34every Tuesday so my young leader the girl guiding and he makes money for that and
11:40because I've never had a detention we get rewards and like with our awards we get
11:44badges sometimes I had two more but then got stamped on it's Friday Alexa and best
11:54mate Ruby are heading into lunch to meet up with their other friends
11:57I think it's fair to say that at year 10 there's a lot of hormones raging around and it's a perfect
12:09age for things to go spectacularly right and spectacularly wrong lunch is an important time in
12:19the year 10 social calendar but friendships at this age can be pretty complicated friendship
12:25groups here the very set we've sat at our table I think since the start of year nine every single
12:34day that's why you go to on like break or lunch to meet with your friends I sit with Daisy and Ellie and
12:41Zainab but I'm close to like Daisy and Ellie I'm friends with Heidi and Abby me
12:47fair Anakin summer and Alexa Darcy it's Abby Poppy Ruby we can get a lot of drama in
13:00year 10 oh well she said this and she said that and like friendships breaking up can be a little
13:09bit overwhelming sometimes it's really crazy
13:11shirts in ties on coats off let's go I think friendships for teenagers are hard because as
13:18a teenager you're trying to identify yourself almost and you're trying to find your place in
13:22the world but I think that hyper consciousness of everything that you do with that age does feed
13:29into their anxieties around life in general some gossip has been spread that Alexa's best mate Ruby
13:43has gone off her causing an argument amongst the girls friendship group Papa came up to Alexa and
13:50said someone said that me and Alexa didn't want to be friends but then Papa said that it was all my
13:55fault okay first thing first your date title LP is up on the board for you I'm coming around with
14:01these do now's and I told Alexa about it but now Ruby and this other girl is saying that I lied I love
14:09pop it but I don't want to be friends with someone who's gossiping and having drama all the time is
14:16is there anybody who wasn't here yesterday poppy not in today well she made a right scene at lunchtime
14:25like she stood up like that one I'm so betrayed by you screaming at Ruby and I was like this is
14:31ridiculous so I just walked away the fallout with Poppy has upset Alexa so much she's going to see year
14:4010 student manager Mr Young with Ruby I think she feels betrayed by us but what poppy does poppy's
14:48saying that to be honest about that like I hate and everything right do you know best friends yeah
14:55yeah so I'm trying to resolve it in like a mature way and she just what and she said I'm leaving it
15:01till tomorrow and I said I don't want to leave it till tomorrow because I'll just be stewing on it
15:04all night and I've got bigger issues and just a falling out with friends at school 100% and I
15:10genuinely can't make myself stop thinking about everything that's happening I mean my mum fell
15:15out this morning over something or nothing but it's so upset me because I don't want to fall out
15:19with her my grandma's not well there's just so much to do I don't think I'm so stupid because I'm crying
15:27all the time well you're not stupid at all your friends don't hate you Mr Young has tissues for the
15:35first time ever all right yeah I get very anxious about everything I get really nervous about tests
15:43and about friendships breaking up and this year with starting GCSEs it's been really overwhelming it
15:50gets a lot sometimes you're a 14 year old teenager you're not super long so I'll try and get you
15:59both together and okay office says no there's not much I can really do no all right she is she is
16:05oh massive Alexa's a model student she's somebody who you would think just glides through the school
16:16day but then under the surface she's got so many things that she worries about so many things she
16:22panics about over worrying is exhausting and it can easily dominate your thinking it's that dark cloud
16:31that you can carry around with you all day they represent that sense of purgatory where they're stuck in
16:40the middle that day of judgment you can't go to heaven or hell because of his actions and his sins so
16:46he's within purgatory
16:48Arvin retention E4 see you later can you all say bye-bye
17:00can you all say bye-bye to him
17:02don't swear
17:08go bye-bye anxiety keep on trying me I feel it quiet it's Friday morning
17:14boys boys nice and calm
17:16break's over let go of in sleep Harrison thank you
17:21come on lads fellas fellas take you down a notch
17:28no you tell them all you're just my assistant
17:34Alexa is heading to mr. Chippendale's science class
17:45in year 10 students have to start working towards their GCSEs in earnest everyone have a
18:00test paper for you right sit down please quietly and today Alexa's coming face to face with her
18:08first practice paper okay listen very carefully this is your first test in year 10 it's gonna be
18:17tough and that is what it is science is tough it's not a negative thing if you're finding something
18:22really difficult I think the hardest thing for year 10 is the change in expectations that teachers have
18:27and what I am expecting is for you to answer every single question on the paper
18:33lots of students really struggle with it I think I've seen more and more students
18:38being really anxious especially around assessments obviously exam conditions
18:44obviously working in silence off you go
18:47Alexa hates the word test or assessment or any other form of getting something right or wrong
19:03I'd feel sick when I get anxious my dyslexia starts kicking in more and then I'm like I can't read
19:10the words properly I always feel like well maybe I'm not good enough when the rest of my class are
19:18doing the harder stuff of moving on quicker I just get really anxious that I could drop sets
19:23she just puts too much pressure on herself and expects perfect your brain hurts that means you tried
19:31my hands are shaking so much now take a second are you sure you're all right I'll be fine
19:38you'll be fine or are you fine no I'll be I'm never fine but I'll be fine I'm very ambitious
19:45I want to be an English teacher I want to do the best I can do and if I don't think I'll be really
19:57disappointed in myself I don't recognize a time where as many children are presenting with mental
20:06health problems as now and at the forefront of that queue is a student who presented as anxious
20:12Tuesday morning a bit emotional a bit of a mess children deserve to be listened to they deserve
20:16to have the voice heard you are building your resilience and you are getting there and for
20:21some children the place where they get the voice heard is school of course you can overindulge but
20:26the way I see it every interaction is an intervention not a therapy yeah no everything that we do every
20:35word that we say is a potential opportunity to steer their life in an ever so slightly different
20:40direction hurry it lad yeah and we need to take that responsibility extremely seriously how are we
20:48feeling crap why me and my mum just had a massive argument in car yeah it's because I'm getting back
20:55in contact with my dad okay when was last time you spoke to him four years ago oh so it's been a while
21:01yeah I used to have a relationship with him but everything just went I can't say the word everything
21:09just went wrong do you know what she's probably thinking I don't want Scott to get hurt again I
21:13don't know you say it's hard at times and you shout and you bicker and you fall out that's natural
21:17you're a teenager you're harder work than you probably think you are I stopped seeing my dad when I
21:24attend I try not to think about it at all I would like to see him but obviously I don't want to get
21:31hurt again the fallout between Alexa and Poppy is still ongoing at lunch they're now sitting at the
21:45opposite ends of the table I'm not gonna stop my friendship with Ruby just because someone else
21:58has said something you look like you're gonna tell us something it's not a nice thing to fall out with
22:13someone who's supposed to be your friends someone who you like talk to every day and then you lose
22:18in them it's can be difficult life is good for you too with the girls struggling to solve their
22:32issues on their own year 10 student manager mr. young has decided to step in and try and avoid more
22:39disruption take a seat you two why are you sat in just a dark room on your own in the hope that
22:47people think I'm not in fair enough right you two let's bang your heads together right you're in the
22:57same lessons the same friendship groups so who wants to go first I think the thing that really annoyed me
23:06yes it was also I was on the steps going up to maths you shouted at me because you wouldn't let me speak
23:12at all but I had said to you so many times go on say and you said I'm not starting out today I'm not
23:17sorting out that was at lunch at break I was fine to talk to you but you get going no let me talk
23:22conflict resolution challenge it's just about listening to him and give him that time to explain how they're
23:30feeling let it get off their chest and then take it from there why haven't you said we can talk about
23:35with Ruby then I don't want to talk to Ruby but then you're not prepared to fix the friendship then
23:41are you I don't want to fix friendship with Ruby but if you don't want to be friends with her that's
23:44fine but you're just getting annoyed like and I don't get why I thought I better go out or else I
23:51will can I just say something girls right because you too mature sensible girls if you feel as though
24:00you've been heard now look at how you're going to move it forward is that what you want to do Alexa
24:07I'm not sure I think if we'd have talked about yesterday it would have been fine but I think it's
24:13become such a massive thing would you agree it's been a bit of a drama yeah so she's not disagreeing
24:20with you there and there's been like dramas with other people like Saturday night I will
24:25literally me and my grandma was trying to watch the holiday and I had like five people texting me
24:29and there lies the problem with social media it's massive turn it off watch the film with your
24:36grandma it must not helping is everyone else throwing their two beds in is it that's all that's
24:41the issue I feel like Alexa's torn between being friends with pop and being friends with Ruby yeah and
24:48I don't think she knows how to be friends with both of you without upsetting with all the other I still
24:53want to be friends yeah yeah I don't want to be friends with you but I'm not pushing Ruby out for you
25:01yes she's been there for me when I need her I think we just need to move on we can still be friends I'm going
25:07from the detention I think it's worth just having a little bit of time of chill out before we can get
25:12back to long enough yeah please don't be sorry I don't know why I'm crying I've been a wild bug
25:19we're all going girls right what I'm just conscious of is there's been a few different names mentioned
25:25just just say I'll be a poppy sod and now I'm just you know he keeps coming up to me going are you gonna
25:30scrap her it's because I'm his ex and his girlfriend can't get all that right are we all good there tends
25:38to be a difference in the way that we will see arguments conflicts you know normal teenage fall
25:42outs play out between boys and girls would you like one of these yes oh my god they're going
25:47through the same challenges but the context behind them is very different because of the types of
25:51emotions they're going through all right that's squished all right sir found Scott been an issue in
26:02Irene and he's ended up punching a wall right finding your place as a young man he's really
26:08really hard they can suffer from a shortage of role models and there's lots of negative influences out
26:13there they are trying to navigate a route through adolescence that's quite a choppy one to do
26:21rugby is like my release of energy and anger and all the emotions any problems I've got I step onto
26:39the field and just everything just goes away while I'm playing it's Friday evening and Scott's at his
26:45professional club the Bradford Bulls he trains with them twice a week after school if you get
26:53good grades doing everything right then they'll think you're a class player but you've got to
26:59behave otherwise you get kicked out to be a first role play I think it'd be everything to me to lose it
27:07just be like losing a piece of me back in school Scott knows the stakes are high I need one pile of
27:17books one pile of patients but the temptation to have fun with his mates is still proving hard for
27:23him to resist Kiel I need your help Madden's gonna get me no no I'm not backing it am I yet Kiel please
27:31Scott you ain't even there hi Madden you all right Madden I'll let you go first
27:37what's going on what's going on now we're friends oh yeah yeah no we are friends we're playing the same
27:44rubber team yeah yeah you two playing the same rubber team yeah yeah positions yeah obviously he's saying
27:50you're big I'm saying you're small oh no you're saying you're big I am big I know you are I don't
27:56even know what I'm not seeing much of is what we call analysis I want to focus on that word charge
28:05do we charge very often does it come at any risk to you of course it does potentially you could get
28:16hurt quite often the things that this group of friends are doing are not nasty they're not
28:23malicious but the frustration comes in when you think right this could potentially have a real
28:31impact on your future Scott's now running late for his next lesson okay once again
28:43having caught mr. Burton's attention again Scott's now facing yet another visit to internal exclusion so
28:59right why given what we've just talked about going back into your quote and using the words
29:03and explaining how powerful they are why does that prove brilliant that's the word I was looking
29:10for responsibility right we're gonna stop now close your book nice and neatly please mr. young you there
29:17please need to spend at least lunch time in are you please but we've got a choice on Scott am I but
29:23the rules are the rules we make that so clear to you we're constantly doing this thing where we're just
29:29looking into the middle distance as if what I'm saying doesn't really matter we either start to
29:33engage with staff or we have to pick up that phone call I really don't want to be doing that
29:43you need to hear some tough messages Scott
29:45there is a link between being at school and the discipline you show there the discipline you show in
29:52a rugby field those things need to coexist together if you feel like being unfairly treated you have to
29:59tell me who you was with I think if Scott doesn't own his own behavior then there is a risk that he
30:10isn't going to be on that pitch for much longer let's put it that way it's Friday morning right
30:24Marriott what were late for my dad your dad slept it right that's really not your fault is it mrs.
30:29else good who's on late today what what is oh yeah I had money and what have I missed
30:39late just on my way down well mark you late
30:43in the canteen the year 10 girls have one thing on their minds how they've done in their practice
30:59science GCSE test I wanted to bang my head against the table most of the time in that test I want
31:10you to get things wrong because what am I doing here if you never get anything wrong what am I
31:15getting paid for although he's still marking the tests mr. Chippendale's revealed he's planning on
31:21moving some of the year 10s down a set wait is this that thing just from the test I don't know I
31:33asked him if it was on just the test and he's not really giving me an answer I didn't say you're moving
31:38down I'm gonna be I didn't say you're moving down Alexa my hands are shaking off like I don't need
31:45people to worry about it well now it's made me worry about it I don't wait to run you weekend yeah
31:49well you already after by telling me that well I can't sleep tonight now bro I can't move you down
31:56is that what you said to me what about brev can I say brev no so can I call you the man then
32:02try it I want to hear what it sounds like say it the man then sir no forget about that were bad
32:11Scott meanwhile has been trying to turn over a new leaf under mr. Burton's watchful eye
32:20today's lessons it's about the ghost of Christmas yet to come in class Scott's behavior has been
32:39showing some signs of improvement I don't know if there's a word for it but like when he walks in
32:45silently Scrooge is trapped in his own thoughts lovely Scott you're smashing it I know I cheers
32:50miss appreciate that it's all right head up please stay focused but it's not all been smooth sailing
32:58the combination of Scott and his mates often equals trouble I don't mean to do some of the things I do
33:12what I say but in that moment it just comes out and that's how teachers see it like they see that as
33:18my everyday self right Scott an invitation to try out for the Welsh under 16 squad as up the rugby
33:29pressures outside school hey sir I've got him sir I've just come across it and he's in my office which is
33:36having a big impact on Scott's mood in school you've got to get into the mentality of rugby constantly when
33:41you do it this much it's just like your emotions are all over place like you're getting angry you're
33:48getting in the zone if you'd someone don't go well it's I take it quite hard I might not be in the
33:54best of moods next Monday what's next Monday I've got a travel down to Wales on the Saturday yeah and
34:00then I've got to do a trial for Wales on the Sunday so I never got to travel back from Wales so that's
34:09good on it our responsibility is not necessarily to make sure that he's playing international rugby
34:15our responsibility is to make sure that he leaves at the end of year 11 with fantastic GCSE results
34:20Jay Scott so we've just got to make sure that we keep him on the right track
34:26excuse me nice line up sensibly please don't take your scarf off Skyler not really turn this way
34:38please what do we call that if there is a disruption to the order of your DNA your DNA goes wrong genetic
34:44mutation and mutation that's a really serious problem Scott and the other year 10s are in
34:50another science class what does that mutation in your DNA potentially cause it potentially causes
34:56cancer but Alexa's not in her usual seat but when you get a sunburn they are all your skin cells that
35:04have been ionized by the radiation from the Sun and they are destroying themselves then you get cancer
35:12just takes one you're not all right come on with me see yourself dance and that's really hard
35:35isn't it and you know what it's all right to be upset but what I don't want is you stood on the
35:44corridor crying all right I'd rather we get you somewhere where you feel safe mrs. Crowther is taking
35:52Alexa to see student support manager mrs. Whittaker if you're feeling vulnerable at any stage through
35:58the day you know where I am all right come and save me thank you there's there's a lot going on
36:06prosper exists because we're dealing with young people who are not emotionally mature adults who
36:16are not at this point by design ready for the big wide world my head constantly feels loud like the
36:22screaming at each other like different sides of my head yeah it's just like sensory of the challenge
36:29that Alexis got he's not letting things get on top of each other all at the same time and build up to a
36:33point whether the quiet crippling it's Monday morning and Scott will find out today if his trial for the
36:52Welsh under-16 rugby team has been successful
36:59I find out today oh I keep thinking is it yeah I find out in the next half an hour
37:22staff have given him special permission to have his phone in school so he can see the message as
37:30soon as it comes through now what today will be is you'll be doing your final make that's the
37:43priority Scott you are going to need a laptop today so I'll grab you one of them in a minute any questions
37:52what day did I call my number I don't know where it is
37:55but how it's like my mom
37:57no
37:59well do you help me
38:17I win
38:18Oh, I mean, oh, that is fantastic news. How you been? Overwhelmed. Well, well, take a minute.
38:43Don't tell me you're out of breath running for one corridor, because you're playing international
38:48rugby soon, so you need to be fitter than that. Have a little read. I see you're new straight
38:54away from the subject line. Yeah. Well, I'm really, really proud of you, Scott. Absolutely
39:02buzzing. Do you know what you want me at? I emailed her as well. She just tried ringing
39:06me while I'm in class, then. Get on, Pop. Hiya. I'm in. Oh, no! I'm literally crying
39:16my head off. Oh, I'm so proud of you, Scott. Well done. Thank you. Oh, I've just done my
39:25make-up. All right, Scott, I love you and I'm proud of you. Well done. I love you too.
39:32See you later. See you too. Bye. Bye, bye, bye, bye. It's just unreal. It's just like
39:39a rush of energy and, like, joy. Let's see this at the start, eh? Yeah. Good lad.
39:44Cheers, sir. Go on. Take a shake. Sorry. I'm a Welshman. I've got in. It's just made me feel,
39:55like, really good about myself, because obviously I'm playing for a country and I'm going to be
39:59playing England, Ireland and Scotland. No. It's period three and Alexa's facing her own
40:10moment of truth. Have you got the test back? Assessment QLA. What does that even mean?
40:16It's not even me. Oh. We're so proud of you. Mr. Chippendale is due to announce the results
40:23of their science test. Right, so let's hold this line out. Alexa, just wait there for me
40:28one second. Aw. They'll play a part in the decision on set moves. Here we go, please.
40:33Right, listen up. We are going to go through some of the assessments today. We're going to get
40:39your results back and things like that. Since my grandma got diagnosed, it's like all the
40:45control, it feels like it's been taken out of your hands. And when, like, you have lack
40:49of control, you just want to control the only things you can. And I think how I do in school
40:56is one of those things. Uh, Alexa. I'm in trouble. No, you're in trouble. Oh, God. So, this assessment, I just wanted to have a word before I gave it to you back. Yeah. Because I'm in trouble.
41:01I'm in trouble. No, you're in trouble. Oh, God. So, this assessment, I just wanted to have a word before I gave it to you back. Yeah. Because I don't want you to get the big red number on the front and think. And have a freak out. Have a freak out and think, well, I hate science. Okay. I've got something like two. You've got slightly more than two, don't worry. Slightly more than two. But we're two months into year ten. Okay. And this is a year 11 GCC paper that you'll be sitting in two years' time. Okay. I'm happy with this. You make me really scared of all these. Why? It's only this.
41:30Alexa's scored five out of 56. It's more than I thought I'd get to be honest. I thought I'd get to be honest. It's one of the lower marks in the class. But Alexa's trying to take it in her stride.
41:45I think I get a bit in over my head sometimes and I get too worried about it. But I'm trying to manage that.
41:52I don't want to have my anxiety at all. Like, it's awful. But I think if I didn't have it, I might not have the same drive that I do. Oops.
42:04So, I don't think I'd be kind of the same person.
42:08Get out. Bye. What's the next one?
42:12Mr Chippendale also has some news about the potential set move.
42:17Have a good weekend.
42:18Hey.
42:20Wait for me outside.
42:21Two seconds. Thank you very much.
42:23Right, you are going down.
42:25Oh, I like that.
42:26OK?
42:26OK.
42:27Your scores were low. I really do mean everything that I said about changing sets. However, I decided that you'd be better suited in this class.
42:35OK.
42:36OK?
42:37Have a nice weekend, Alexa.
42:38You too.
42:40I'm not moving down.
42:42Are you not?
42:42No.
42:42And he told me because he was like, I know you're going to have a freak out.
42:44After class, Scott's mum is waiting for him in the school corridor.
42:54Well done.
42:55Cheers.
42:56My mum's always had my back.
42:58Any time I've needed anything, my mum's always been there.
43:01Like, if I needed to speak, my mum's been there.
43:04When I stopped seeing my dad, she were always the shoulder I cried on.
43:08Today's been well good.
43:09Everyone's been coming up saying, have you been in?
43:11Every teacher that I've gone to, they've been so proud.
43:14You know, when I came in earlier, Miss Nurse gave me a massive cuddle.
43:17She's...
43:18Me and my mum are close.
43:21I did go through a period of time where I didn't really speak to her about my problems.
43:26But I think she understood because she were a teenager when she had me.
43:29She were only my age.
43:31She was 14.
43:33And she were in year 10, like, studying for GCSEs.
43:37You've actually been a dad at your age.
43:39I can't look after myself.
43:44You've got a free mistake.
43:49For those students in year 10, it's almost waving goodbye to that phase in your life of being a child and going into young adulthood.
43:57And that comes with a great deal of responsibility.
43:59And that's difficult.
44:01A huge part of what we have to do is just let them know that we're not going anywhere.
44:08And we'll look after you.
44:10Just trust us because we've seen it before.
44:11But also, it's really important to celebrate success.
44:17Whatever success looks like.
44:18Hello.
44:19Hello, is that Scott's rugby coach? It's Mr Burton.
44:23Hiya there, you alright?
44:24Yeah, how are you?
44:25What might come across as quite an insignificant achievement to some people, for others, is absolutely huge.
44:30I'll pass the positive feedback on to our coaches.
44:33Whether it's overcoming a particularly anxious episode.
44:36See, I am closer sometimes.
44:38Whether it might be academic achievements, improving attendance, improving behaviour, whatever it might be.
44:43So let's open the book and get today's dating, title and LB.
44:46If it means something to that student, we need to celebrate it and show that we are proud of them.
44:51Because that really, really matters.
44:52One in year 10, me and the student parliament are here to introduce the start of the election campaign for head students.
45:01And Alexis decided to tackle her anxieties head on by entering the race to be head girl.
45:09I'm definitely challenging myself going for head girl.
45:12If I were to win, I'd be elated. I'd be so happy.
45:16But she's up against some tough competition.
45:22Yeah, I think I'm quite competitive.
45:29I do think that we all want it.
45:32What, you like your main ideas?
45:33Yeah. What's everyone's ideas?
45:35I'll pass it on to the next person for now, let me think.
45:38Darcy won't tell anybody what she's doing.
45:41My mum has specifically told me I cannot say anything to them about my campaign on my poster.
45:47Why?
45:49My mum gets really competitive too.
45:51What are you thinking? If you don't win, I'm going to scrap you all, make it an action.
45:56Oh my God!
45:58No, no.
45:59Where's your vote going?
46:02I can't say where my vote's going. You can't ask me that.
46:05I'm not going to say that. Bloody hell, fire.
46:07Next time...
46:11Hello! Welcome to Chess Club.
46:13People think it's for nerds, but actually, it's so cool.
46:16A year nine who's struggling to fit in.
46:19I guess you could just say a grown people.
46:21I mean, not like a virus or a fungus, but you know what I mean.
46:24I'm going to try to get your chin to your chest and roll your shoulders.
46:30And one young, year eight, who's trying to change his ways.
46:34I know that one.
46:36It's Chad.
46:37Do Chad.
46:38It is, sir. Trust me, it is.
46:40He's a very, very lovely boy, but he's been getting into trouble quite a lot.
46:44Out of 960 students, Jay, could be the third worst at the minute.
46:55See that same time next Sunday.
46:57And there is support information for the issues raised at channel4.com slash support.
47:03And a new one from the Bake Off tent on Tuesday night at eight.
47:07It's bread week, but who will be toast?
47:09And next tonight, they're not just cutting one person.
47:12The inheritance strikes.
