00:00It's a real roller coaster ride, this time on motorway patrol.
00:05Far too fast.
00:06Taking those from here.
00:09That's your speed there on the left hand side, OK, 192 kilometres.
00:12Very shortly this thing's going to be on a transporter.
00:15Then way too slow.
00:16It's certainly struggling, right?
00:17We're doing a whole 22 kilometres an hour.
00:20Down to 18, and we're down to six.
00:23And we've stopped.
00:25Much too hot.
00:27Jeez.
00:29And heaps to chill.
00:31We're driving on the motorway, and we're driven to a crashed car.
00:34We're all spun out.
00:52It's Friday night come Saturday morning, and Auckland's quiet roads bring out the loud engines.
00:59There's all the boy racers going by us now.
01:02There's a frequent boy racer hangout.
01:03They come up and down around here.
01:06There's nothing wrong with being a car enthusiast in a road-worthy vehicle obeying the law.
01:11But losing control of your car is a problem.
01:14Atoch operators alert police to the crashed vehicle now sitting motionless in the fast lane.
01:26Sergeant Jonathan Campbell is en route immediately.
01:28Whereabouts in 61 of this crash?
01:31Unfortunately, other road users are much closer, doing 100 kilometres per hour, and have no idea what they're about to encounter.
01:40Quick reactions and defensive driving is the only thing stopping oncoming drivers from crashing.
01:46But it seems like just a matter of time before the unexpected object becomes unavoidable.
01:54There's only fire on scene, and I believe Ambo's got delays at this stage.
01:57The presence of a fire appliance offers some protection, but everyone at the scene is still at risk, and there's a lot of them.
02:07So the big danger being in the fast lane on a bend is that other cars come flying around the corner and crash into us.
02:13Other officers quickly assess the injuries to everyone involved.
02:19Modern safety features probably have a lot to do with the Toyota driver's clean bill of health.
02:24I just woke up with people waking me up. That's all I remember.
02:28Obviously, they said I crashed into the barrier. Obviously, obviously, everyone now made it out safe.
02:37Crashes aren't planned, but when your car tries to go off the road, there is always a cause.
02:42Sergeant Campbell continues to interview witnesses.
02:45We came just at the tail end of it.
02:47OK.
02:48Yeah.
02:49We're driving on the motorway and driven to a crashed car.
02:54Spun out. Got out safely.
02:58My partner's a bit hurt right now.
03:00Just got a couple of bruises on the side.
03:04Sergeant Campbell speaks with the driver of a car who was driving in convoy when he narrowly missed the silver Corolla.
03:13She must have been quite a bit further ahead of your sister then if you had time to stop, look back, and then she's crashed.
03:19Unless you've stopped after, you know, you've pulled over, she's crashed, you've stopped and looked back and seen it.
03:28I don't know. How did it work?
03:30Oh, she's following pretty close behind you.
03:32Yeah. Oh, no, not that, she wasn't that close like this, like that, and she was like pretty, a bit far like this.
03:39Yeah.
03:42Eyewitness accounts aren't always very accurate, but new information has emerged.
03:46He's actually crashed at the Hubberwich. It was the crash at the Hubberwich.
03:50Oh.
03:56When Aucklanders get a burning desire to head out of town, many head north.
04:01Today on this section of motorway between Albany and Silverdale, the driver of this van has another sudden urge to get out of his vehicle and call 111.
04:11Constable Aaron Rom is heading to the scene to assist.
04:18So we're just heading up to a van on fire just on the northern motorway.
04:24Yeah, we've got a tow on the way for this here.
04:28Police are on their way, but what the driver really needs is 2,000 litres of water at 200 psi.
04:34Fire and emergency arrive before Aaron and quickly douse the van ferno.
04:46All lanes are closed, so those leaving the City of Sales are forming their own city of snails.
04:56Back at the scene, the flames are out and now it's a recovery mission.
05:00Victor on 117?
05:03Yeah, if you just want to push your vehicle up to where I am, pretty much here, mate, and start rolling those corns up.
05:10The fire and the fire service have done a really thorough job.
05:15Jeez.
05:19Do you see how it started?
05:20No.
05:23The heat melted the metal van into a vandal right in front of its owner's eyes.
05:27Passers-by also got quite an eyeful and probably a car full of smoke.
05:38Friends have put out the car fire that's done quite a number on the van.
05:42It's gone up in flames, luckily, as the fire appliances were arriving.
05:47So good timing on their part and glad they were here.
05:51Probably would have been a bit much for a little fire extinguisher.
05:53There's just one guy in it, and I'm sure that's been quite a shock to him this evening.
05:59Whatever the driver Jimmy is looking for, hopefully it's in the meagre pile of possessions he was able to save.
06:06The odds of finding his pie and energy drink in this are slim to none.
06:10Do you believe it, eh?
06:12Yeah.
06:14No point.
06:17Jimmy was enjoying his drive until the air conditioning got up to 600 degrees.
06:22So just driving on the motorway, starting to feel the vehicle starting bumping.
06:26And then I just pull over immediately.
06:32Then I see some smoke out of it.
06:35Well, after like one or two minutes, then I see the flame out of it.
06:39Then I have to walk away as far as possible.
06:42I'm all fine, yeah.
06:43At the beginning I was a little bit shocked, yeah.
06:45But now, calm down.
06:46The insurance company is going to take care of it, yeah.
06:48Jimmy plans to file an insurance claim for losing his van later this weekend.
06:53Those who've lost part of their weekend file past, but can't claim back their lost time.
06:58And we've got some traffic management in place.
07:00One lane open right now, just because there's still a bit much of a hazard.
07:05And then hopefully we can get out of here soon, get the motorway flowing.
07:08So we'll just get two lanes open shortly anyway.
07:11Sweet.
07:11All right.
07:12We'll start bringing them across.
07:14With traffic moving and fire going, Auckland goes back to normal.
07:18Hopefully reduce the delays that it might have caused.
07:21And yeah, now it's raining.
07:23Typical.
07:30On the north-western motorway near Lincoln Road,
07:33Sergeant Jonathan Campbell is piecing together a single vehicle crash.
07:37It quickly became two.
07:39He's actually crashed at the Harbour Bridge.
07:46It was the crash at the Harbour Bridge.
07:48Ah.
07:48Information that the driver of the silver car has crashed twice tonight points towards possible
07:54intoxication, incompetence, or all of the above.
07:57Probably about 20 minutes earlier, there was also another crash just prior to the Harbour Bridge
08:02southbound.
08:03It appears from speaking to the driver of the silver car that it isn't that one same
08:07driver and car.
08:09So he's actually been involved with two crashes tonight.
08:11I'm off to the hospital to take blood samples from the driver of the silver car
08:15and see what the results are.
08:19While Senior Constable Russell heads to hospital, Sergeant Campbell stays to help protect the scene.
08:24The two cars are write-offs.
08:26He's just going to get the speakers out of the car before he gets towed.
08:30Other drivers at the scene are breathalized and cleared, as is the motorway.
08:34Nobody has been seriously injured tonight, which is remarkable, considering how wrong the night went.
08:49So I guess the message for these crashes is, A, drive to the conditions.
08:54You know, it's a wet, miserable night out there.
08:56And, you know, there's no need to be speeding.
08:59Let's just lose control.
09:04Speeding or changing lanes in Auckland's Waterview Tunnel are both big no-no's.
09:10Sergeant Chris Mann has just entered this fine piece of engineering,
09:14when he's surprised to come across a car with almost no-go.
09:17We're kind of certainly struggling, right?
09:20We're doing a whole 20, 22 kilometres an hour.
09:22We rush out on the Waterview Tunnel, but we've just come across this car that's
09:27limping its way through the tunnel, where we're just shattering him at the moment.
09:31Hopefully if he's going to break down, he breaks down outside the tunnel.
09:34Whatever is going wrong, it better not get worse.
09:37There's nowhere to pull over for 2.4 kilometres.
09:40I don't like our chances once we get to the hill.
09:44Down to 18, down to 15, it's not looking too good.
09:50And we're down to six, and we've stopped.
09:54Tune in.
10:03Oh, OK.
10:04You were going quite slow early on in the tunnel.
10:06Were you driving then, or were you just coasting?
10:07Were you driving then, or were you just coasting?
10:10Oh, OK.
10:11I'm in the middle, so this is good now.
10:14Right.
10:15Communication is hard due to the reverberation
10:18of hundreds of exhaust systems.
10:21But in summary, the driver is up a creek without a paddle,
10:25or in this case, a working engine.
10:27Chris's patrol car is also lacking.
10:30I've got no push bars.
10:31Are you able to get one of your Tums units here
10:33to give him a push?
10:36The breakdown could not have happened at a worse time.
10:398am on a Tuesday morning.
10:40Everyone commuting to work and school is getting impatient,
10:44including the driver.
10:46Pull down a bit.
10:47Yeah.
10:47And the car started.
10:48Oh, OK.
10:49Do you want me to drive out here?
10:49No, no, the crew's just arriving,
10:52so we'll put you just outside the tunnel.
10:54They'll probably push you into that lay-by area up there,
10:56then we can try and deal with it there.
10:57Are you an AA member or anything, or?
10:59Are you a member of AA or anything, or?
11:01No, no.
11:02I don't want to call.
11:03All right.
11:04The traffic management trucks are a sight
11:06for sore eyes and ears.
11:08It's been the best spot, eh?
11:10Is it all right over there?
11:11Yep.
11:14As the tunnel precession gets underway for the dead Sabaru legacy,
11:18the lane re-opens behind, and the backed up traffic clears.
11:22Mechanically, I'm not too sure what's wrong with this vehicle,
11:25but we get them out of the tunnel as we get the morning commute flowing again and get them out of
11:32harm's way beautiful just like you brought one cool cool probably you need to arrange some sort
11:39of tow way now that'll uh well yeah if it starts the only trouble is is if it does exactly the
11:46same thing it's going to break down on you again yeah take you up to the gull at rosebank
11:52something like that yeah you want to do that okay all right listen if it's not going to go you can
11:56get someone in or you can walk to wherever you need to go if uh while the car gets hooked up for
12:01a tow chris finds out what's up with the car have you had troubles with it or no no this is the first
12:07time i had any trouble oh okay but i was in uh overseas for more than a year the car was just
12:13sitting there oh okay but i've been using it for last two months yeah i had no trouble oh okay
12:22he's had a place of safety toe off the motorway we can try and sort the issues out just for future
12:27reference if anyone does happen to break down on the motorway network don't get out of your vehicle
12:31don't move around too much just stay where you are and uh wait for the recovery to come
12:42auckland's motorways are being well looked after tonight constable chris chambers and sergeant chris mann
12:49have 20 years experience on these roads one chris used to be a funeral director both have seen the
12:56carnage speeding causes hey dude how's it going why are you going so fast i'm going to test my overheating
13:03you want to test your overheating problem okay that's ridiculous man if anyone is going too fast
13:09tonight both chris's will be on to them laser quick
13:16now what speed do you got him and chris 192 over the 100. we're just trying to catch up to a vehicle
13:23that uh chris lasered on the other side of the motorway to 192. um fear to be racing another vehicle
13:31we've got jatoch monitoring them on the uh cameras yeah copy we'll try that
13:37let's see if it slows down if so we'll go and uh have a chat with them
13:46gotcha the speeding vehicle has slowed down the coupe and its driver with a death wish come into sight
13:56now that they've stopped him the driver of this audi is in double t trouble
14:08sergeant chris mann and senior constable chris chambers have stopped a driver racing other cars
14:12and endangering the public now what speed to you going on chris 192 over the 100.
14:22taking those from you why um because very shortly this thing's going to be on a transporter
14:28okay it's going to be impounded what did i do 192 that's what you're doing police don't have any
14:35tolerance for drivers who want to endanger the lives of everyone around them by racing on a public road
14:41maybe you've um forgotten that the entirety of the motorway network is lined by cameras i'm just going
14:47to do a quick alcohol check with you just count 10 nice and clearly please
14:52this is laser these vehicles or this particular vehicle going the other way racing another vehicle
14:57at 192 kilometers an hour is what he's locked him up to it and more than likely he's probably
15:01going to lose the vehicle for unnecessary exhibition of speed here's your result
15:05pass can i just have a look at the speed radar just laser yeah yeah i'll go and grab it in a second
15:11the driver seems very nervous and he should be um at the moment the car is going to be impounded
15:16okay i'm going to be sending you to court for um uh operating in a race okay that's what's going
15:23to be happening just wait here one chris taps out and the other taps in
15:29that's your speed there on the left hand side okay 192 kilometers and at a distance of 193 meters
15:36away is where we lasered you okay you're the uh you're the lead vehicle of the uh of the two other
15:41vehicles that were behind you so you're the first one that we've lasered hey picked up there at 192.
15:46there's been two other cars involved which at this stage uh still remain unknown uh he's operating in
15:52a race so it's a serious offense uh he'll have a court take roughly in about a month's time to uh explain
15:58himself right now the young man seems to have no defense for going so fast on a public road
16:04there really isn't one the chris's service is seamless and so is their teamwork chris man writes
16:10up the order for the impound chris chambers orders the truck can you jump out of the car for me please
16:17i need to um explain a couple of things to you so i'm formally summonsing you to court it would pick
16:22you up at 192. i think that's grossly excessive if your tire blows out you crash it at the very
16:28least you'd jeopardize all your insurances maybe just go down to the tractor get um this car would
16:33just be phenomenal down on hampton downs or something like that would be but it's taking a long pit stop
16:38first the impound they're going to be picking up and looking after your car for a period of 28 days the
16:43other two pieces of paper deal with mandatory suspension of your driver's license okay so effective
16:48immediately for a period of 28 days you don't have a driver's license so i'll drive any vehicle on any
16:54public road within new zealand but that's not all you get picked up driving within 28 days the car that
16:59you're driving will be impounded for 28 days at the owner's cost okay and you'll be required to go
17:04back to court quite a slippery slope okay if you keep sliding there's no bottom am i quite clear about
17:11what i've gone over there yeah you explained it very well all right i've finished that
17:19chris's words have had the desired effect on the illegal street racer and his friends get a lesson
17:24for free too all right mate uh a little change of plans here let me squeeze in here first we'll get
17:30on me to pick us up that's all right we're just going to move off the motorway okay um because we
17:34thought that there might have been some issues with the uber i think he might have gone past us and seen
17:38us and gone oh maybe not sitting next to law enforcement really takes the thrill out of breaking
17:44the rules at the end of the short trip is a shiny new tow truck ready to take the audi away it's all
17:54just part of the impeccable service road police provide uh these guys really good uh look after
18:00your vehicle make sure it's locked up and um any questions um no he's losing his car
18:08and hopefully changing his outlook um yeah until you get touched with um going out there and seeing
18:18some of the really horrific sites that we do um it'll yeah you've got no concept you've got nothing to
18:25base a um something about it so yeah and it's true and it's true another car on the back of a tow truck
18:31it's not the first time unfortunately won't be the last time young drivers if you want to have a race
18:36don't do it on the public motorway okay um it's really unsafe for yourselves and other members
18:41of the public who are not expecting you to be coming past at such great speed so let's keep everyone
18:45safe keep the road toll down no one likes being stuck in traffic motorbikes are super agile and make
18:57motoring fun but constable connor hillhorst has just observed a rider taking a few too many risks
19:05we've detected a motorbike at 120 kilometers per hour um 20 over the speed limit weaving through
19:11traffic just because you can accelerate quickly doesn't mean you should
19:20hey sir how's it going reason for pulling over today is your speed passing lamby drive
19:23i get a laser at 120 mate yeah and you do kind of weave through traffic at times a lane splitting
19:28no more than 40 k's an hour on the motorway bro you're gonna check your license out bro he hands
19:33over his license but it's missing something no one meant to be riding a bike until you have a bike
19:39license you know though hey and the issue is as well this is a 1500 bro you're gonna have a full license
19:46to actually get sit on this one as well if you're a learner rider this 1500 cc boulevard is not the
19:52machine for you what is lane splitting when are you allowed to actually pass on the left
19:57stationary vehicle stationary because a car pulls out in front of you you hit them guess
20:02who's gonna come up better off the bike or the car be the car right the risk of being killed or injured
20:08in a crash is over 20 times higher on a bike than in a car all right i'm not taking the bike no you're
20:15not suspended or anything you just don't have a license okay three infringements one you can get
20:20off it's going to be the most expensive one get your license you send through evidence of that in the
20:25next 28 days that ticket's wiped okay however the speed 120 and as well as that is the lane splitting
20:33mate so part of this as well i'm going to be forbidding you from driving until you get a license
20:37his burning desire to hit the motorway on his boulevard before he's qualified to do so
20:42is going to cost him a few hundred dollars and also a big favor from a friend how far from home are you
20:47at the moment is there anywhere down here you could leave it not really anyone you know that might
20:55actually have a um bike license to come pick it up so if you want to phone your mates i'll get the
21:04paperwork out i'll start doing that paperwork i'll come back explain it all to you okay while the
21:08unlicensed rider decides who he trusts to ride his pride and joy connor has a much simpler job with
21:14the paperwork he's going to be forbidden to operate a motor vehicle um being the bike until he obtains the
21:19correct license obviously being a class six um from now we're going to safely escort him off the motorway
21:25to somewhere where he can park up the bike and continue with the ride home uh what it means other
21:29than his bike after a couple of calls he now knows his mate's license status too
21:36so there's any news um no one friend doesn't have a license and the other two that i've
21:42riding before but it's just some of them he does eventually track down a mate to take the bike off
21:49his hands and connor can escort the rider off the motorway it's never a good decision to ride without a
21:56license it's an expensive ticket um and also if you're in an accident you're obviously not insured
22:01by any means the driver who crashed his car twice was not intoxicated but had to complete diversion for
22:07careless driving the driver who crashed into him got tickets for breaching her license conditions no off
22:12and failing to stop short totaling 750 dollars the driver going 192 kilometers an hour on a public road
22:20was charged with operating in a race he was found guilty and fined 700 dollars
22:29for every 100 drivers who die in a speed related crash 30 passengers die with them speak up and ask your
22:38driver to slow down
