00:01Towns that should come with a warning label where living would be a nightmare.
00:06Have you ever driven into a town and known right away that it is a place where crime,
00:11deterioration and hopelessness are pervasive?
00:15A place where the residents stare at you as though they know something you don't.
00:19The businesses are shuttered and the air feels heavier.
00:23These are the towns that require warning labels and we will list 10 of them today.
00:28Some of these areas are worse than you can imagine, so stay put.
00:33Number 5. Flint, Michigan
00:36You might be familiar with it. It became notorious because of the water crisis.
00:41However, were you aware that it hasn't been settled yet?
00:45Yes, exactly.
00:47Although the news stories stopped years ago, the fight is still going on for the locals.
00:52Imagine waking up each day with the knowledge that clean, drinkable water,
00:57something we all depend on most, is unsafe.
01:00For many folks in Flint, that is their reality.
01:04Flint's water supply hasn't been fully restored despite all the public uproar.
01:09However, the water problem is only the start.
01:12Many Flint residents are struggling to make ends meet or dependent on low-paying, precarious work
01:19due to the city's extremely high unemployment rates, with no prospects for growth.
01:25There is nowhere to go when people wish to leave the town since poverty has such a strong hold on it.
01:30The economy of the city is in a precarious state and it is difficult to envision how people would rebuild when the town's basis is collapsing.
01:39The future of the next generation, however, is where the true sorrow resides.
01:44The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention state that lead poisoning can harm the kidneys, brain and neurological system for a long time.
01:54Many children in Flint have been exposed to lead, and the water's lead levels have risen to unsafe levels.
02:01The water situation hasn't been completely resolved even after it garnered national attention.
02:07And the issue persists every day.
02:10For too many families, the harm is irreparable.
02:13The auto industry used to be proud of Flint.
02:16General Motors, the heart of American manufacturing, was based there.
02:21However, the city fell apart as the companies shut down and employment was sent abroad.
02:27Number 4. Gary, Indiana.
02:30Gary, Indiana.
02:32This place is difficult to characterize without using terms like forgotten, abandoned, or even post-apocalyptic.
02:40Imagine traveling through an area that was formerly a bustling industrial center, but now appears to be the remains of a long lost conflict.
02:49The noises of wildlife searching the streets are the only sounds breaking the silence of the night.
02:55And the streets are littered with dilapidated homes and abandoned factories that lie there like tombstones of a once great economy.
03:03The bustle of life is absent from this place.
03:06All that remained was the eerie silence of a town.
03:09It's difficult to overlook Gary's downfall.
03:13Both the people and the steel mills that formerly drove the city's prosperity are vanished.
03:18Over the last few decades, Gary's population has shrunk by more than half.
03:24The city's population has decreased from over 180,000 at its height to little over 75,000 today.
03:32That is a great deal of wasted space and potential.
03:35The employment market is nearly non-existent and crime rates are high.
03:40Schools are also having difficulties.
03:43In addition to the city's chaotic educational system, Gary's citizens must constantly fight to better their lot in life despite insurmountable obstacles.
03:53You feel as though the city itself had given up.
03:56Even the lighting are out, making the streets gloomy and inhospitable.
04:01Hope is hard to come by in this community and even harder to cling to.
04:06Gary might appear like a desirable choice for anyone searching for a place to live that is economical.
04:12After all, this could help you save more for retirement.
04:16The average cost of a home is $81,000, which is significantly less than what you would pay in more upscale neighborhoods.
04:25Number 3. Stockton, California
04:28You might picture stunning beaches, pricey homes, and affluent cities when you think of California.
04:35What about Stockton, though?
04:37That's the Golden State's opposite side.
04:40The darker side of the state is most evident in Stockton, even when the beaches and big cities may be shining.
04:47It is a town that defies the conventional narrative of California.
04:51A place where persistent struggle and financial adversity obstruct the dream of opportunity.
04:57Stockton was once a thriving city, but its economy gradually collapsed, making it one of the biggest cities in the US to declare bankruptcy.
05:06Regretfully, not much has changed since then.
05:10As you drive past the streets, smashed windows, deserted shopfronts, and a few people attempting to make ends meet, you get an almost palpable sense of deterioration.
05:21Even worse, Stockton is facing more than simply unemployment and poverty.
05:26Its gang problems are comparable to those of several of the nation's bigger cities.
05:31An FBI report claims that gang violence is a recurring issue in this area, making it unsafe to explore on your own after dark or even during the day.
05:41Stockton has gained notoriety as one of the most dangerous cities in the US due to its crime rate, which is 81.5% more than the national average and 65% higher than the California average.
05:56I consider the extremely tough Dyers brothers two Stockton-born UFC fighters.
06:03Number 2. Atlantic City, New Jersey
06:07New Jersey's Atlantic City.
06:09Once the crown gem of East Coast resorts, this location was well known for its dazzling casinos, vivid neon lights, and busy boardwalk.
06:19Those who wanted to experience the excitement of gambling, live performances, and beachfront pleasure had to visit Atlantic City.
06:27But these days, especially in the off-season, it's a ghost town.
06:32Imagine abandoned streets with neon lights flickering on the fronts of old shop fronts, empty boardwalks, and the ocean air blowing through.
06:41It's like entering a time capsule of diminished splendor, a location clinging to the past yet apparently failing to resurrect the enchantment that first brought it fame.
06:52Although the casinos remain, they are now surrounded by seedy individuals and dilapidated neighborhoods.
06:59Foreclosures are common and the economy has stalled.
07:02The US Census Bureau reports that Atlantic City has one of the highest rates of foreclosure in the nation.
07:09Home discounts are still available here, but they come with a warning.
07:13The town's appeal is waning.
07:15It's alluring for those on a limited budget to believe that they may own a home here and spend their days by the beach.
07:23However, if your home feels deserted, what good is it to own one?
07:28The neighborhood is failing and the streets are dangerous.
07:31Number 1. Monroe, Louisiana
07:35The weather in Monroe, Louisiana feels like it has struck you like a wall.
07:40The heat isn't the only factor.
07:42You feel as though you could devour the damp blanket of dampness that envelops you.
07:47Imagine going outside and the thick, dirty air making your skin stick right away.
07:53Before you had walked ten paces, you could already feel the perspiration beginning.
07:58It's practically difficult to enjoy the outdoors without a cloud of insect repellent following you because mosquitoes are merciless and unrelenting, swarming around like they're hungry for blood.
08:09Although Monroe may appear to be a spot where you may live on the cheap, the weather here is an extra burden you have to bear just to get by.
08:18It's also awful.
08:20Monroe is hard because of more than just the heat, humidity, and mosquitoes.
08:25Every home and every street in the community is affected by poverty.
08:30Monroe's unemployment rate is high, and the local economy hasn't improved much in decades.
08:36The infrastructure, which reflects the effects of years of neglect, feels trapped in the 1970s with its dilapidated buildings and deteriorating roads.
08:49As a result, many Monroe residents struggle to meet their fundamental necessities, such as access to reasonably priced healthcare and a lack of employment prospects.
09:00The city is lagging behind as the rest of the globe advances because of its reliance on outdated industries.
