00:002-0 England have won it, 4 out of 4 in qualifying en route to the USA as things stand.
00:11That was a known goal, whatever Noni Madueke was trying to say.
00:15And then Declan Rice heads in his 6th goal for England in his 67th appearance for his country.
00:22England out in front from Serbia, who won 1-0 in Latvia today.
00:28Blaivic with the goal and the top two meet this week on Tuesday night in Belgrade.
00:35We'll bring that game to you live here on ITV1 and STV.
00:38Albania against Latvia also on the 9th.
00:43Let's go down to get some interviews with Gabriel Clark, with Noni Madueke and Elliot Anderson.
00:49Yes guys, well done. You both look like you enjoyed that.
00:52Noni, how do you sum up England's performance though?
00:54Yeah, first and foremost, it's good to get the win and a clean sheet.
00:59You know, these are World Cup qualifiers so it's very important.
01:02And yeah, of course we knew what type of game it was going to be.
01:05You know, we were going to be playing in the opponent's half for most of the game.
01:09Sometimes it was frustrating, but listen, it's about getting the goals and yeah, just...
01:16You look like you were claiming, hoping to claim your first England goal.
01:20No, no, no. I don't want to claim that one, man.
01:22You're not getting it?
01:23No, no. That's fine. I'm not worried about it. The team won, so I'm happy.
01:27How do you sum up your debut? You looked at home. Did you feel at home?
01:30Yeah, I did, to be fair. Yeah, it was good out there. I enjoyed it.
01:34Now, we knew they were going to be hard to break down.
01:37It was all about the first goal and we got that, so yeah, it was good.
01:40It's the one frustration, the debut didn't come with a goal.
01:43Yeah, it was. I should have scored, to be honest. Yeah, but next time, hopefully.
01:48It was a little bit behind you, maybe?
01:50Yeah, it was, but yeah, never mind. Next one.
01:52Nonny, was the second goal maybe the template for the way that Thomas Tuchel wants this England to play?
01:59Direct crosses?
02:01Yeah, definitely. He wants us to be direct and aggressive in attacking areas
02:05and I think that was a great example of it.
02:07So, it's Rhys' top quality and yeah, it was a great cross and a great finish from depth.
02:14What about the frustrations today? 2-0, but is there a little bit of frustration,
02:19maybe in terms of some of the finishing?
02:20Possibly, yeah, but I think it's a World Cup qualifier, so all that matters is the three points which we got,
02:27but yeah, little things will come over time, so yeah.
02:31We'll maybe find out more about this England in Serbia.
02:34Ready to go again?
02:36Yeah, I am, yeah. Nonny?
02:38Yeah, no, for sure, definitely.
02:39Well done, guys.
02:40Cheers, thank you.
02:42Well, let's start with Elliot Anderson then, his debut, which of course is such a special moment for him and his family.
02:47How do you think he did?
02:47I thought he'd done very well. Obviously, it was an easy game for him,
02:50because he was always going to get loads of possession.
02:52I think Bill Shankly said years ago, the time to judge the players when he's got time on the ball,
02:57regarding the decision-making, pace of pass, the type of pass he gives people,
03:01and he definitely had an impact, so he will be pleased.
03:04But if he starts on Tuesday, obviously, a tougher night for him coming.
03:06That would be good to see him sod on Tuesday, wouldn't it, in a game of that magnitude?
03:09Yeah, it would. And like, you know, people were saying before, you read a couple of things,
03:13we'll see how he goes, Elliot Anderson, because, like, again, like, forest player transitional game,
03:18let's see how he plays when he's on the ball.
03:20And you could see, you know, again, I watched him against West Ham as well,
03:23but he's very comfortable on the ball, and you do, like Roy said,
03:27you want to see him against better opposition to see if he wants the ball as much,
03:31and I'm sure that he will, because he's got better players around him,
03:34making movement for him, so, you know.
03:36This would have been nice, it would have been good for him,
03:38and, again, this is a poor pass.
03:39The catchman said I'm a bit short there.
03:41Yeah, Kane's got to give him a better pass there.
03:43It's just slightly behind him, it's an easy pass.
03:45Just to put it in front of him, you know, keep a credit, but, like...
03:48But he makes the game look easy, I give him that, he makes it look easy to game.
03:51Really pleased for him, really pleased for him.
03:53In a really big game, and you understand what I mean by this,
03:55when you maybe want to play a double pivot, so two in a defensive position,
03:59one of them might be Rice, rather than further forward,
04:01would you be happy if he were the other one?
04:03Yeah, I'd be comfortable enough with him, yeah,
04:05and that's just not on today's performance,
04:07it's what he's done over the last year or so at Forest,
04:08he's obviously been at a high level at Forest, they were doing well,
04:12so, yeah, you'd think he would be surrounded by better players at England,
04:14he'd be able to cope with that.
04:15Yeah, without a doubt.
04:16Is that the one thing we've learnt today, that everybody's learnt today about England,
04:19and is Elliot Anderson's possible suitability at this level?
04:22I'm not sure we learnt much else, did we?
04:23Well, you know, not really, you know,
04:26but we've got the job done against a frustrating team,
04:28but, again, we've got somebody who's come into the fold,
04:31who, hopefully, you know, when he plays against better opposition,
04:34he can go again, because if he does,
04:36then that's going to be someone that we need, we need that player.
04:39Yeah, I don't think the manager isn't too happy at the end,
04:41I think he'd be frustrated again with the second half.
04:43But, you know, we're on about setting high standards and getting to good habits,
04:46I still think England fell back into their old ways again tonight,
04:49certainly in the second half, sorry, sideways, backwards passes.
04:52We saw their two goals tonight, particularly the second one,
04:55just from across, they've got to cross it a bit more,
04:57don't complicate the game,
04:58and I still think they go backwards too many times.
05:00Yeah, you were actually asking, while we were watching the second half,
05:03to put some crosses in.
05:03Crosses in.
05:04Very simple what Rhys James does, isn't it?
05:06Gets it out of his feet.
05:06Especially if you've got players like Rhys James in possession,
05:09and we saw the goal, it was very straightforward,
05:10but obviously he gets good first touch,
05:12and Declan just walks in there,
05:13and the beauty with the cross,
05:15it's always and or aren't even set up for it,
05:16because they've been used to dealing with balls in front of them.
05:19But nice pace of pass, just put it in there.
05:21I watch all levels of football, as we all do.
05:23The amount of goals that come from crosses,
05:25England's two goals today come from crosses,
05:27don't be reluctant to cross the ball.
05:29And a lovely finish by Rhys, very good.
05:31I think what you do see there, what's blatantly evident,
05:35is that, yes, they want to stop us coming through them,
05:37because obviously they were quite narrow.
05:39So the space is on the wing,
05:41and we have got players who can head the ball.
05:43You just think, get the ball wide, get the ball in the box.
05:45You see how dishevelled they were,
05:47and they're all over the place when the ball's going in the box.
05:49Just do that.
05:50Yeah, especially when you've got time on the ball,
05:51and you've got bodies in there,
05:52because when players come back out,
05:53they're going back out to the other side to cross it anywhere.
05:56But you've got that opportunity, take it.
05:58What we are watching today is,
05:59I think what quite a lot of people see,
06:00particularly in the Premier League,
06:01and they wonder, therefore,
06:02whether it is as exciting as it was a decade ago,
06:05which is this horseshoe football, isn't it?
06:08Comes to one side, you don't cross it in,
06:09so you go all the way back out the other.
06:11You say, come on, I can get that sometimes.
06:13If you're trying to keep possession,
06:15or you're up against a really good defensive team,
06:17you're like, listen, we have to pass and probe,
06:19but against a lesser opposition,
06:20and you've got it in the wide positions,
06:22and you've got time,
06:23don't be reluctant to cross it.
06:24Especially when you're playing against a team
06:26that they haven't scored in, what,
06:28I don't know how many games it is,
06:29you know, 14 games or so, I don't know.
06:31You can afford to try and pass it through,
06:33then you'll get it back in a couple of passes.
06:35If you can't play with freedom
06:36against teams like Andorra,
06:38you're in trouble,
06:39and I still think England are a bit uptight
06:41with somebody they're passing in their final turn.
06:43What about Ezzer in that sort of number 10 role?
06:45How do you think he did?
06:46Well, I thought that he would have made,
06:47I thought that in some instances,
06:49like we saw in the first,
06:50I'd just stay still and get on the ball,
06:52and he had an opportunity in the first half
06:54where he'd done that,
06:54got his half a yard and took the shot.
06:56You'd probably be disappointed
06:57because he could have done better with that,
06:59but as long as Ebreche is staying in that area,
07:03I'm really happy with him.
07:05No worry for me,
07:06I think we talk about players like this,
07:07I think when they,
07:08I think you don't know care,
07:10but the manager should be saying,
07:11OK is not good enough.
07:12We need to set higher standards than that.
07:15OK, 2-0 to England then.
07:17Before we go off air,
07:18we're going to hear from Thomas Tuchel.
07:19We hope England have won again.
07:21What did he make of it?
07:22Are they reaching the standards and the heights
07:24that he is demanding of them?
07:43In the match programme today,
07:45Thomas Tuchel talked about wanting to see
07:46speed and hunger from his team.
07:50Well, they've won by two goals to nil,
07:52they sit top of the group,
07:53but what did he make of the performance?
07:55Here he is with Gabriel Clarke.
07:59Thomas, you said in your programme notes,
08:01I want a spark at Villa Park.
08:03Did you get that?
08:04Yeah, I think so.
08:05It's difficult,
08:06it's a very different crowd
08:07to a Premier League crowd.
08:08I think we would have got the crowd going,
08:11but it's very different and we know it.
08:13So, but I think the energy was right,
08:15quality was there,
08:16we should have scored more.
08:17After the first goal,
08:19I think we had like 10-15 minutes
08:20with too many ball losses.
08:23Lost a bit of focus and concentration,
08:25but the second half found it again
08:27and created a lot of chances
08:28and like I said,
08:29should have scored more.
08:31How did Elliot Anderson do on his debut?
08:34Very, very good.
08:35Very, very good.
08:36What impressed you most?
08:38Well, he was a bit nervous
08:39in the beginning of the training week
08:40and then he did good
08:41and we said,
08:43let's try it,
08:43but he showed that he can
08:45become a very good player.
08:46Yeah, has he got enough
08:47in that position
08:48for you to go,
08:48right, yeah,
08:49you're playing in Belgrade
08:50against Serbia?
08:51That was the test
08:52and I think he passed the test,
08:54so why not?
08:54There's no reason
08:55why he should not play in Serbia
08:56if we decide
08:57to have the position for him.
08:59He's ready to go.
09:00Was maybe a vision
09:02for your game
09:02the second goal?
09:03It was direct.
09:06Obviously,
09:06there was a wonderful cross involved.
09:08Were England at times today
09:09maybe not direct enough?
09:10No, I would not say so.
09:14I think we missed
09:15a little bit
09:15the little moments
09:17to accelerate the game.
09:19Maybe Epps
09:20had not his very best day
09:22on the number 10 position.
09:23He trained so well
09:24in the decision making,
09:25struggled a little bit.
09:26Last pass from Noni,
09:28last decision from Noni
09:29was not clinical enough.
09:31Max Rushford
09:31had had some good moments
09:33but couldn't finish them
09:34with a clinical assist.
09:37So, no,
09:38it's stuff that
09:39this can happen
09:40against a narrow 5-4-1.
09:42Should have scored
09:43maybe the second one earlier
09:44because the second goal
09:46gave us a lot of freedom
09:47and players moved more freely
09:49and with a bit more confidence.
09:52What have you learned today?
09:53A lot.
09:55That we are on the right way.
09:56The group played
09:57with the exact same attitude
09:59that she trained
10:00and it trained
10:01and I'm glad
10:04for the players
10:04so we will prove
10:05the point now
10:06in Belgrade
10:07and that's it.
10:08You're certainly getting
10:09as well a lot out
10:10of Noni Madiwaki
10:10aren't you?
10:11In that role
10:12he looked particularly
10:14impressive at times today.
10:15Yes,
10:16that's what he needs
10:17to give.
10:17Sometimes he has a bit
10:18of a lack of concentration
10:20or falls asleep
10:20and counter-pressing
10:21but if we push him,
10:23if he pushes himself
10:24he can be a very
10:25important player.
10:26Bukayo is at the moment
10:27injured for Arsenal
10:28and for us
10:29so he steps up
10:30and that's what
10:31he needs to do.
10:31You're five games in
10:32do you think
10:33however you might learn
10:34more about England
10:35from one game
10:35next Tuesday night?
10:37Yes,
10:38we will learn a lot
10:38from next Tuesday night.
10:40We are ready for it
10:40we know what's coming
10:41it's a difficult away game
10:43but it's a crucial game
10:44for us
10:44because we can make
10:45a huge step
10:46into the qualification
10:47and we are well aware
10:49of it.
10:50Same system
10:51total different quality
10:53total different style
10:54of play
10:54much more physical
10:55away game
10:56so yes
10:57we will be prepared
10:58we have Sunday
10:59and Monday
11:00to prepare
11:00to travel
11:01and we will be ready.
11:03Thank you Thomas.
11:05Do you find his
11:06singling out of players
11:08quite refreshing
11:09because he doesn't do it
11:10aggressively does he?
11:11He's just saying
11:12he needs to concentrate
11:12a little bit more
11:13he trained well
11:14but didn't play quite as well
11:15as I like today
11:15do you mind the way
11:16he does that?
11:17I don't mind
11:17it's a nice message
11:18to the players
11:19and it never seems
11:20too harsh
11:21there's a nice tone
11:22with it
11:22and he seems to be
11:24coming from a good player
11:25so I think the players
11:25would appreciate that.
11:27Because it's as if to say
11:29I know what you're capable of
11:30so just you know
11:31concentrate more there
11:32try a bit harder there
11:33you could be really
11:33really good in that position.
11:34Yeah because there's
11:35a lot of emphasis
11:35on England
11:36to win well
11:37and I don't think
11:39we've ever done that
11:40we've always been
11:41attritional in games
11:42and get it done
11:43I think the women
11:44showed that
11:45but the way he is
11:46and the way he talks
11:47he tells them instantly
11:49you can see him on the line
11:50when he's upset
11:51with something
11:51and they know
11:52so they know
11:53the levels
11:53that they need to get to
11:54and they're going to
11:55make sure
11:55and what I should say
11:57is what he wants them
11:58to do is
11:58when they're playing
11:59is to bring out
12:00the best of what
12:01they're capable of doing.
12:02This goes back
12:03to the short term contract
12:04doesn't it
12:05in terms of his attitude
12:06I'm not here for long enough
12:08to A have to worry about it
12:09or B frankly
12:10be too worried about
12:11how you're going to react
12:12you know
12:12you've got to do it
12:13you want to be in my team
12:14and that might work
12:15you know
12:15he hasn't got any
12:16long term plans
12:17with this group of players
12:18and that's why
12:19after games
12:19maybe he can be critical
12:20but again
12:21he's got a nice tone to him
12:22and he mentioned there
12:23about the final pass
12:23from the attacking players
12:24but that's really important
12:25so he's also been critical
12:26of him
12:27but again
12:27but a nice way about him
12:29Let's hear from
12:30Rhys James then
12:31set up that second goal
12:32here is with Gabriel
12:33Well done Rhys
12:352-0
12:35but how do you sum up
12:36England's performance?
12:38I know
12:38it's early on in the season
12:40you know
12:40we haven't had so many games
12:42you know
12:42to find rhythm
12:43but
12:44no it was a win
12:45you know
12:46a start
12:46a start
12:48you know
12:49in the right direction
12:50and no it's a positive
12:52you know
12:53positive outcome
12:53from you know
12:54losing to Senegal
12:55As debuts go
12:57where do you place
12:57Elliot Andersons?
12:59No I think he's a
12:59phenomenal player
13:00you know
13:01I think
13:01you know
13:02he fully deserves
13:03to be here
13:03and he you know
13:04showed that
13:04with his performance today
13:05What impressed you
13:06the most about him
13:07in that sort of
13:08six role?
13:09No I mean
13:10I've played against him
13:10a number of times
13:11and I've you know
13:12I've seen what he can do
13:12in the Premier League
13:13you know
13:13the toughest league
13:14in the world
13:14and you know
13:16I thought his
13:17his call-up
13:18would come sooner
13:18but no that's credit
13:20to him
13:21and you know
13:21how well he performed
13:22today
13:22Was the template
13:23for what Thomas Tuchel
13:25wants the second goal
13:26your cross
13:27direct
13:28the finish
13:29was that
13:30the sort of
13:31type of football
13:32maybe that we want
13:33more of
13:33might see more of
13:34moving forward?
13:35No I think
13:36you know
13:36when you go into
13:37you know
13:38tournaments
13:39and you play against
13:40you know
13:40different teams
13:41and different style of plays
13:42you know
13:42you need to adapt
13:43and you know
13:44that was the game plan
13:45for today
13:46but you know
13:47going on to
13:48Tuesday
13:48that might change
13:49If he stays fit
13:50would he be first choice
13:52do you think?
13:52I think so yeah
13:53when you look at
13:54what he's capable of doing
13:55whether it's defending
13:55passing
13:56even if he inverts
13:58and going to the
13:58to the midfield
13:59he's comfortable there
14:00and we've seen
14:01that if he gets the time
14:02space he'll cross the ball
14:03and put it pinpoint
14:04he's defensively
14:06very sound
14:06absolutely yeah
14:07if he can stay fit
14:08no danger
14:09And the manager knows him
14:11which is hugely
14:12it's hugely important
14:13is it
14:13because the manager knows
14:13he can trust him
14:14He's got great quality
14:15we saw a brilliant ball
14:16in the first half
14:17Kane probably should have
14:18got the end of it
14:18the key for him though
14:19is staying fit
14:20over the next few months
14:21he gets some games
14:22under his belt
14:22and get up to speed
14:23and the good thing
14:24for England tonight
14:24somebody's lad
14:25needed the minutes
14:26and it wasn't demanding
14:27on him
14:28so there'd be a better
14:28place for Tuesday
14:29Elliot Anderson
14:30I think he's going to
14:31play in Belgrade
14:31I like the way he didn't
14:33show away from that either
14:34didn't say
14:34oh just wait and see
14:36for a selection
14:36no he's good enough
14:37that's what you want
14:37as a young player
14:38he said he was nervous
14:39at the start of the week
14:40you want that back
14:40from the manager
14:41and that trust
14:41and that gives you
14:42great belief as a player
14:43will there be a part
14:44of this squad
14:45who actually want
14:45Tuesday to be
14:47quite fiery
14:48quite hostile
14:49very demanding
14:50will they actually
14:50want that in a way
14:51I think we will
14:52probably test themselves
14:53yeah because you want
14:54to see that
14:54you want to see that
14:55you want to have that test
14:56we need that as well
14:57we want to see
14:57if Elliot Anderson
14:59can like
14:59okay this is the turn
15:00they've turned the heat up a bit
15:01let's see how he can
15:03yeah you want to see that
15:04you want to see Nani Maduweke
15:05playing against maybe
15:06better opposition
15:07see if he goes past people
15:08you want to see Ebreches
15:09in that middle
15:10in that middle
15:11getting his 10
15:12like we've seen he can do
15:13slipping balls through
15:14taking shots
15:15if he gets the opportunity
15:16you want to see all that
15:17absolutely
15:17because of the lack of jeopardy
15:19quite often
15:19with a lot of these groups
15:20you almost have to go
15:21looking for it
15:22which Belgrade should offer
15:24yeah I think the players
15:24and the manager and the staff
15:25will probably look forward to it
15:26I think it'll obviously
15:27be a hostile atmosphere
15:28but let's not get us
15:29if Serbia aren't accurate either
15:31if England bring their A game
15:32you think they'll win comfortably
15:33we'll see you then
15:34thank you very much indeed gents
