00:00President Donald Trump on Saturday said that he would impose major additional U.S. sanctions on
00:05Russia only after all NATO countries increased pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin by
00:10halting purchases of Russian oil. His proposal, announced on social media, is unlikely to land
00:16with several members of the 32-country alliance. Turkey is one of Russia's major customers and
00:22has sought to preserve ties to the Kremlin despite the war. Other customers of Russian oil,
00:28led by allies of Trump, Hungary and Slovakia have worked to protect their economies from the
00:33disruption caused by switching energy providers. I am ready to do major sanctions on Russia when
00:39all NATO nations have agreed and started to do the same thing, and when all NATO nations stop
00:45buying oil from Russia, Trump wrote in a social media post on Saturday morning. He also said he
00:51wanted the bloc to impose significant tariffs on China. He admonished NATO for not doing more to
00:56counter Russia. The purchase of Russian oil, by some, has been shocking. He wrote, and he said
01:03it was weakening the bloc's ability to persuade Putin to end the war. Nevertheless, I am prepared
01:08to go when you are, he wrote. Just tell me when. Following an unusual meeting between the two that
01:15Trump hosted in Anchorage last month, he expressed frustration with Putin's continued aggression against
01:21Ukraine. This was his latest return to threats to impose sanctions on Russia. Trump has taken a
01:27mercurial approach to his efforts to halt Russia's war, sometimes blasting Putin and sometimes seeking
01:33his friendship. Even though they agreed that Europe should put a final stop to buying Russian energy,
01:39some Russia hawks in both Washington and Europe said on Saturday that Trump's latest demand felt like
01:44a way for him to avoid taking action against Russia. Instead of looking for a solution,
01:49it reminds me of looking for a way out, said former Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius
01:54Landsbergis, who said that he supported the push for Hungary, Slovakia and Turkey to halt Russian
02:00energy imports. But Trump is friendly with the leaders of those countries, he said, and the
02:05president could push them directly without waiting to move on further U.S. sanctions. Trump in the Post
02:10also hinted at his frustration over the growing alliance between China and Russia and the ways in
02:16which that could prolong the war, saying that the NATO alliance should target China with tariffs of
02:2150% to 100%. China has a strong control and even grip over Russia, and these powerful tariffs will
02:29break that grip, he wrote. If NATO does as I say, the war will end quickly, and all of those lives will
02:36be saved. If not, you are merely wasting my time as well as the United States' energy, money, and time.
02:43It was unclear whether Trump made European tariffs on China a firm part of his demand.
02:48While many European leaders are also frustrated by China's deepening alliance with Moscow,
02:54leveling tariffs would be complicated for the bloc, which has historically been committed to free trade.
02:59In a global tariff campaign that has targeted nearly every other major economy, Trump has made
03:05Moscow one of the few exceptions while the Biden administration imposed extensive sanctions on
03:11Russia. He has not taken major direct action against the Kremlin since taking office.
03:16Trump didn't condemn Russia's violation of NATO airspace, writing on TruthSocial,
03:21what's with Russia violating Poland's airspace with drones? Here we go. He downplayed the violation
03:28during his Friday interview by noting that the drones didn't end up doing much damage.
03:32He stated, I mean, I'm not going to defend anyone, but the Polans,
03:37they were actually knocked down and they fell into an area. However, he did not defend anyone else.
03:43But Putin shouldn't be close to Poland anyway. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Saturday that
03:50the United States was still gathering information on the incident but underscored that it was an
03:55unacceptable and unfortunate and dangerous development. He said Washington was still
04:01determining whether the incursion into Poland was intentional. If the evidence leads us there,
04:06then obviously that'll be a highly escalatory move, Rubio told reporters before departing on a two-country
04:12trip to Israel and Britain. There are a number of other possibilities as well, but I think we'd like
04:18to have all the facts and consult with our allies before we make specific determinations.
