00:00welcome back everybody my guest tonight recently set the world record for traveling solo to the
00:13earth's deepest depths well he's about to meet the earth's shallowest man please welcome james
00:20cameron thank you mr cameron thank you so much coming on nominal quadra here obviously i'm a big
00:35fan or we can shake hands again if you want a lot of people a lot of people don't want to let go of
00:38me i understand the feeling but you're you're one of these uh hollywood elites okay poisoning the
00:45minds of our children with your escapist fantasy movies yeah okay case in point titanic you guys
00:52see that titanic movie you guys see that all right a couple people saw that betty made a chunk of
00:58change now that movie i think has got a terrible message for our kids that young women of means
01:06and breeding should go off with just some tramp they meet in stereo yeah yeah you really you realize
01:13that's the message of that movie yeah yeah think how much the film could have made if we had done
01:19it right right exactly if if you'd focus group that movie yeah and and jack had lived you could have
01:27turned some coin yeah have you thought about a sequel have you thought about a sequel where rose goes and
01:32fights the ocean for his body we'll work on that what now it's being released it's it's it's out right
01:40now in 3d okay what does the 3d impart was a spectacle to begin with don't get me wrong i felt
01:46like i've been i was terrified in that movie it wasn't a scary movie i'm afraid i'm gonna feel like
01:52i'm drowning if i go see it in 3d that's what is it giving you well that's exactly the goal the goal is
01:58to put you on the ship and you know it's uh it's a sense of depth it's a sense of being there that's
02:04what the 3d is all about but how do you how do you do that to a movie that was shot in 2d how do you get
02:08it 3d you can't like reach into the film and and and like open it like a top hat yeah if if only
02:16it were that easy we we had to spend 14 months uh 300 computer artists uh working um you know at at
02:24at screens outlining every single character adding depth and dimension to every single object in every
02:30single frame is everything is everything 3d in it now yeah yeah even like when they're doing it in
02:34that car right we worked we worked especially on that that that that sweaty handprints coming right
02:43at you although they cut it out in china we just found out really they cut that out in china that's
02:49too sexy for the chinese they were they were afraid that chinese men would actually be reaching out
02:56toward the screen this is true you can't get this off and that it would interfere with the enjoyment
03:02of the people sitting next to them but they somehow reach out towards this was the official i can't
03:08believe the chinese men have that little sex there are a lot of them this is a concern so it's been
03:14edited but we we made we made 20 million dollars there in two days so i'm going with their edits
03:19wow that's nice yeah the market has spoken yeah now speaking of the ocean you've got a little bit
03:27of obsession about the ocean because besides the the titanic and the titanic 3d you did the abyss
03:32okay now and and and now you've gone down to the deepest spot in the ocean yeah the mariana trench
03:39yeah where where in the oceans is that thing well it's actually near guam which is you know western
03:44pacific kind of out in the middle of nowhere and uh it's part of america sir it's not nowhere
03:48it's in it's in the federated states of micronesia sir about a mile outside of american waters
03:55american citizens sir in mic okay they have a representative in government mother
04:00whoa whoa okay don't all right federated states of micronesia and they have a congresswoman i
04:10interviewed her don't you're on my turf you're on my turf except you know the bottom of the ocean
04:15are you aware she can't vote i do know she can't vote neither can washington dc does that mean that's
04:21not the united states because i agree with you there okay all right i accept your apology now
04:27so why go down there what's down there man well it's the uh last unexplored frontier on planet earth
04:37how far down are we talking seven miles seven miles yeah thirty six thousand feet or eleven
04:43thousand meters if please know me if you're metric just i'm canadian we don't broadcast in europe i'm
04:47canadian all right you're canadian i'm canadian mother under you don't know what
04:51what a shake that might be that might be the least polite thing i've ever heard a canadian do
05:03so so how long did it take to get down there and in what well we built a sub it took us seven years
05:10and uh it's a vehicle that i co-designed with some uh engineers on australian inventor too
05:15apparently because it worked so how long does it take to actually do the drop all the way down
05:22well the whole idea of the sub is like a vertical torpedo so the whole idea is that it it it hauls
05:26ass through the water column so that you can spend as much time on the bottom as possible then it
05:31hauls ass back up so it's a very unconventional design that was the the concept of it so the
05:36entire time you're like uh it's all dark right yeah it's pitch black how long are you in the darkness
05:40down there uh pretty much the whole time because you know you know anything below 500 feet we're
05:44going down to 36 000 feet anything below 500 feet pitch black so we i i'm at that depth in like a
05:49minute and a half and so we're talking like three hours five hours six hours about ten hours for the
05:55whole whole thing yeah yeah how big of a thing are we talking it's uh well it's actually smaller than
06:00this table if the diameter is about 43 inches something like you didn't drink a lot of iced tea
06:05before you got no no you stay away you stay away from a lot of liquids and uh you know bean dinners and
06:11did you see and did you see did you see anything down there like were there was the kraken down there
06:18if i thought there was any chance whatsoever of a giant squid or a kraken i would have been putting
06:23bait all over that sub really just try to get them to come close yeah because that would be the shot
06:27right it would be the director yeah right right um no they're small the animals are quite small down
06:34there because nature's adapting to the pressure the lack of food supply and all that it's it's the most harsh
06:40extreme environment on planet earth let me ask you something that that that that necklace the lady
06:46throws off the boat in titanic you were going after that weren't you yeah get that thing because
06:53that must be mega bucks that must be huge groin james cameron thank you so much for joining me james cameron
07:00titanic 3d in theaters now we'll be right back thank you so much
