BREAKING: President Donald Trump just said in an interview that the Charlie Kirk shooting suspect has been apprehended. Four sources familiar with the matter also told CNN that a person is in custody and being questioned in connection to the fatal shooting.

• Upcoming news conference: State and federal officials will hold a news conference at 9 a.m. ET this morning.

• New footage: Authorities released footage they said shows the suspect fleeing after the killing. A different video obtained by CNN shows a person matching the suspect’s description walking in a residential area near the crime scene before the shooting.

• The investigation: Authorities had asked for the public’s help and offered a reward of up to $100,000 for any information that leads to the shooter’s identification and arrest. Officials will pursue the death penalty once the suspect is found, Utah’s governor said.

00:00that they have and the possible motive that was involved.
00:04Yeah, that document is going to lay out all of their probable cause,
00:07and that's going to be put in front of a state judge who's going to bound this over for trial.
00:11But we learned an awful lot today.
00:14We can expect to see all of that in the document.
00:16But I believe you are correct that now they will have time to refine that evidence,
00:21to refine that storyline, and to add in additional things that they are learning now
00:26as they do searches of electronics, of where he lived, of the car,
00:33that we'll probably learn when that document is filed.
00:36And presumably, according to all the reports we've seen,
00:40in Utah there is a death penalty for a case like this,
00:43and they're going to try to make that case that this individual deserves the death penalty.
00:48Is that right, John?
00:49That's correct.
00:50And the death penalty, you know, in a murder in the first degree charge,
00:54comes with aggravating circumstances.
00:56And as some of our experts, like former prosecutor Ellie Honig said,
01:01this is a case that lends itself to those aggravating circumstances.
01:05So I believe that the governor's intent there was clear.
01:11Prosecutors may not start with that,
01:14but I believe that is the direction that they will go
01:18because of the particularly deliberate, motivated,
01:23and heinous nature of this crime as an assassination.
01:26Yeah, heinous indeed.
01:28John Miller, don't go too far away.
01:30We're going to be getting back to you.
01:31Pamela.
01:32Yeah, we have several CNN analysts here with us now.
01:34I want to start with Charles Ramsey,
01:35senior law enforcement analyst.
01:38Based on all the information that authorities laid out,
01:41does this seem like a slam dunk case to you?
01:44I know we're awaiting charges,
01:45but what we know so far, what do you think, Charles?
01:49Well, first of all,
01:50I don't think there's any such thing as a real slam dunk.
01:52That's why you have to develop evidence.
01:54They'll be processing a lot of information that they have,
01:58and they'll present a very strong case.
02:00So if you want to refer to that as a slam dunk,
02:03but it'll certainly be a strong case
02:05that they will be able to present and move forward with.
02:10We've heard from a lot of analysts,
02:11and I agree with every single one of them,
02:13and all those things jumped out at me.
02:15But there's one thing that hasn't been mentioned
02:16that I really hope we pay close attention to.
02:20And that's the comments that the governor made
02:22when he stepped back to the podium,
02:25trying to lower the temperature on this whole thing.
02:29I mean, when you saw him for the first time,
02:32he was visibly angry at the time.
02:35And you could tell from his comments,
02:37he was a totally different person today.
02:38And I think he's trying to set an example,
02:40and I hope others pay attention to it.
02:44Personally, I've pretty much lost faith
02:45in our political leadership,
02:47both on Democratic and Republican side.
02:49But this gives me a little bit of hope
02:51that people are now starting to realize
02:53that all this charged rhetoric is causing problems.
02:57And, you know, to find that off-ramp, as he said,
03:00to be able to have political discourse
03:01without it turning into violence
03:03is a message that needs to be repeated
03:06over and over again.
03:08I lived through the 60s.
03:11I remember all those things.
03:13JFK, Medgar Evers, Malcolm X,
03:16Robert Kennedy, Martin Luther King,
03:20all assassinated during the 60s.
03:22That's on top of the Vietnam War
03:24and everything else that was going on at the time.
03:26This can spiral way out of control
03:28if we don't take control back.
03:30And we have to as a society.
03:33And I just don't want to overlook that
03:34because everything else talked about is very important.
03:37But I think that's the message
03:39that needs to move forward
03:40because otherwise we're going to be back again
03:42talking about somebody else
03:43and a tragedy that has taken place
03:46because of the amount of political violence
03:48that's occurring in this country right now
03:49that's not acceptable.
03:50But we can change it,
03:52but we've got to change our attitude about it.
03:55And I just want to remind our viewers,
03:57Chief Ramsey,
03:57you're the former police commissioner in Philadelphia,
03:59and I got to know you
04:01when you were the police chief here in Washington, D.C.
04:04So you understand what's going on.
04:06You have a lot of experience in this whole area.
04:09When we were told
04:11that this suspect actually confessed to a family member,
04:16how significant is that?
04:17You say it's not necessarily a slam dunk,
04:19but that sounds to me
04:21like a very, very significant piece of evidence
04:23if this family member is willing to confirm
04:27that, yes, the suspect confessed to me
04:29that he assassinated this individual.
04:33Well, it's definitely a critical piece of evidence
04:35if he's cooperating now.
04:37Certainly all those things matter.
04:38I just learned from experience
04:39you don't take anything for granted.
04:41You continue to work the case.
04:43You continue to make sure
04:44that all the forensic evidence
04:45is processed properly.
04:47You make sure that you continue
04:48to interview witnesses,
04:50that you gather information obtained
04:52from search warrants,
04:53all these kinds of things.
04:54It's not over until it's over.
04:57And I've learned that over the years
04:59that you just keep working it,
05:00keep working it,
05:01and present as strong a case as possible.
05:04So I'm certainly not saying that it's weak
05:06or that all this evidence is not important.
05:08I'm just saying that as an investigator,
05:10you do not take anything for granted.
05:12Yeah, good point indeed.
05:14All right, Chief Ramsey,
05:15thank you very, very much, Pamela.
05:16Yeah, let's bring in former federal prosecutor
05:17and CNN legal analyst Elliot Williams.
05:20Elliot, so we heard officials start to describe
05:23a better picture of who the suspect is.
05:25They said a family told family member
05:27to law enforcement that Robinson
05:28had started to become more political
05:30in recent years.
05:31What does that tell you
05:32about how they might try to build this case?
05:35Not a lot.
05:37And here's why.
05:39What motive is not relevant at trial?
05:43It's certainly helpful,
05:44but what prosecutors will need to prove is intent.
05:47Simply did he intend to commit the crime?
05:49Not really why he did it.
05:51Now, certainly his motive can come up
05:52at sentencing down the road,
05:54but the most important exercise here,
05:56and this is to echo everything
05:57Chief Ramsey had said a moment ago,
05:59really the goal is building the strongest case.
06:02What do you know for certain
06:03that links the person you think was on the roof
06:06to the person that was apprehended
06:08down in Southwest Utah
06:09to the person that took that mugshot
06:11that's showing on the screen right now?
06:12And there are several pieces
06:14of incredibly compelling and useful evidence
06:16that will likely come up.
06:18Number one, you have the testimony
06:19of a number of compelling witnesses,
06:22family members, friends of the family,
06:24and roommates,
06:25all of whom have personal proximity
06:26to this individual and can say,
06:28this is the guy, this is the shirt he owns,
06:31this is the Dodge Charger,
06:32or Judge Challenger he owns,
06:34and this is where we think he was
06:35on that given day.
06:36They have footprints and, you know,
06:39the arm print and so on,
06:41all of which that could be used
06:42to link this person to that place
06:45at that time.
06:46You know, it, as an anecdotal matter,
06:49yes, of course,
06:50it seems like a slam dunk case
06:52and it seems very strong
06:53based on what you know,
06:54but it's really about establishing that chain.
06:56And I think that's what prosecutors
06:58are furiously trying to do right now,
07:00number one.
07:01And number two,
07:02to the death penalty question,
07:03they are also digging through the record,
07:06I'm sure,
07:07trying to establish what it is
07:09that elevates this
07:10from being simply a homicide,
07:12but to the, quote,
07:13especially heinous kind of homicide
07:16that Utah law would require.
07:18That is one of the standards.

07:50Guilty and try to get
07:51some sort of plea agreement
07:52with the prosecution
07:54and maybe seek life in prison
07:56without the possibility of parole
07:58as opposed to the death sentence.
08:00What do you think?
08:02That's certainly a possibility.
08:04Often prosecutors will,
08:06for lack of a better term,
08:07reward someone for pleading guilty,
08:09for accepting responsibility,
08:11but also saving the prosecutors
08:13and the Satan, quite frankly,
08:14the family,
08:15the trauma of months
08:16and months and months
08:17and months of reliving a case.
08:19Now, that's a decision
08:20prosecutors are going to have to make
08:22because I know a lot of people
08:23in the public,
08:24starting with the governor of Utah,
08:26regard the death penalty here
08:28as the only fitting conclusion.
08:31But it may be in both his interests
08:34and the state's to agree to it.
08:36That's something based on
08:37what the prosecutors determined
08:38that they have
08:39and that they're willing
08:40to go forward to trial with
08:41and we'll have to make
08:41that decision soon.
08:42Yeah, good point.
08:43Elliot, stand by.
08:44We'll get back to you as well.
08:46CNN's Ed Levandera is in Utah.
08:48He's outside the prison
08:49where this 22-year-old suspect
08:51is now being held.
08:52Set the scene over there for us, Ed.
08:55Well, this is the Utah County Jail.
08:58We're about nine miles south
09:00of the university crime scene.
09:03And this is where,
09:04in the overnight hours,
09:06the suspect was brought here overnight
09:09from presumably from southern Utah.
09:11So quite a distance covered
09:12in the overnight hours.
09:14We were trying to gather
09:14more information
09:15on just exactly the conditions
09:17of how he's being held
09:18and what is the scenario
09:20inside the jail for this suspect
09:22at this particular moment.
09:24But we also know
09:25that this is where he will be
09:26at least until
09:28the preliminary court hearings.
09:30And what we're learning
09:31is that it probably won't be
09:33until early next week
09:34here in Utah,
09:35as we saw the governor pointed out
09:36in the press briefing
09:37that there are three days
09:39before filing documents
09:42that can be filed.
09:44They have up to that amount of time.
09:46So they're probably looking
09:47at early next week
09:48before there's any kind
09:49of preliminary court hearings.
09:51So the suspect will be
09:52inside the jail here
09:54in the Utah County Jail
09:56until then.
09:57And some distance,
09:59I believe,
09:59from the courthouse
10:01where he would be taken.
10:02And so I'm not exactly familiar
10:03if they would do this,
10:04make an appearance
10:05either over camera
10:07or if he would have to be moved
10:08from here to the county jail.
10:10Those are the kinds
10:10of logistical questions
10:11we'll be trying to figure out
10:12here in the hours
10:14and days ahead.
10:15But right now,
10:16it's a rather quiet scene.
10:18This is a rather large jail complex.
10:22And we know he is here now.
10:24Wolf?
10:25All right, Ed.
10:26We'll stay in close touch
10:27with you as well, Pamela.
10:28All right.
10:28I want to bring in
10:29retired FBI supervisory
10:30special agent Steve Moore.
10:32Steve, I want to get your take

10:35we learned about.
