In an exclusive and rare interaction, Anurag Kashyap talks to LatestLY about his new directorial, ‘Nishaanchi’. The prolific writer-filmmaker and actor also reveals his thoughts on outsiders in Bollywood, how he sees the city of Mumbai as Batman’s ‘Gotham City’, the blockbusting success of YRF’s ‘Saiyaara’ versus their ‘War 2’ debacle, and what the Hindi film industry should do to survive in times of the box office race and decreasing audiences for formulaic films. He also talks about his work as an actor and how the director in him takes a backseat when he is acting. The ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ director also speaks about choosing unique films to produce and present, like the recent films – ‘Bad Girl’, ‘Bandar’, ‘Songs of Forgotten Trees’, ‘Stolen’, ‘Jugnuma – The Fable’ and other films. He also talks about his admiration for the South film ‘Lokah’. Watch the video for the full interview of Anurag Kashyap.

00:14Hello and welcome to Latestly.
00:16Today we have with us a filmmaker who has a cult fan following, cult films, cult music.
00:22I would like to call him the OG disruptor of Indian cinema of our generation.
00:28Let's welcome Anurag Kashyap.
00:30Thank you so much.
00:32Welcome Anurag.
00:33So good to see you after long and let's talk about your latest film Nishanchi.
00:40Let's straight away talk about that.
00:42So, what do you want to tell us?
00:43Nishanchi, nothing.
00:44Nishanchi is a very like for me,
00:48the cinema as a, we, I saw as a child growing up, Salim Javed, Aminta Bachchan, Combo.
00:55All those old films that were used.
00:57It was a story about brotherhood, friendship, family, disruption, but all of them.
01:07That's all of us.
01:08Yes, it's all crime and punishment.
01:10It's all of us.
01:11All of us, how are we selling, all of them, all of them.
01:14All of us, how are we selling, all of us, all of them.
01:15All of us have written out.
01:16Okay, but your trademark stamp is always looking at it.
01:20I mean, it's rustic.
01:22I'm a U.P., so it's home ground.
01:25If you're betting on home ground, you'll make a lot of money.
01:29That's true.
01:31I'll digress a little bit.
01:33Long ago when I met you, one of the first times.
01:36So, you told me one thing.
01:38In Mumbai, maybe localites don't have the outsider's perspective.
01:43So, do you think that's right now?
01:47No, the outsider's perspective is very different.
01:51There are more filmmakers out there.
01:54Yes.
01:55We have more filmmakers from outside.
01:57So, the outsider's perspective.
01:58Like me, people are coming from outside.
02:00Yes, correct.
02:01The insider's perspective is a little bit missing.
02:04I feel like a second, third generation is bigger.
02:09But they didn't see much of it.
02:13That's a very English-speaking, English-thinking generation.
02:17Right.
02:18The outsider's perspective is always there.
02:20But the insider's perspective is not so much.
02:23Okay.
02:24I mean, what are you saying?
02:25No, no.
02:26I think I see Bombay very differently than other filmmakers.
02:32And I also, when I go back to Pradesh, I see it differently.
02:39So, do you see Bombay more realistically as a gritty place than maybe a glamorized place?
02:47No, I see Bombay sometimes as Gotham City.
02:50Oh.
02:51And sometimes I see it like in its own realistic version.
02:55Of a melting pot of a steam.
02:59I am very obsessed from Bombay.
03:01The reason behind Bombay is like that.
03:03The reason behind Bombay is like that.
03:04The reason behind Bombay is like that.
03:05The other aspects of Bombay is like that.
03:07Bombay is like that.
03:08The other aspects of Bombay is like that.
03:09Right.
03:10And I keep exploring.
03:11So, okay.
03:12But now, if you go back here and go back here.
03:16So, you can see your country differently.
03:21Right.
03:22Right.
03:23So, you said Gotham City.
03:25So, do you think some of your versions of Batman?
03:27No, no, no.
03:28No, no, no.
03:29No, no.
03:30Sometimes it felt like.
03:31When Bombay came first, it felt like Gotham City.
03:33Especially in the night.
03:34Especially in the night.
03:35Yes.
03:36Yes.
03:37Interesting.
03:38Very interesting.
03:39So, Nishan Ji, coming back to that.
03:41Do you talk about casting?
03:43So, Aishwarya Thakre?
03:44How do you feel?
03:46No, no.
03:47It was by chance that.
03:50You know, I saw that.
03:52Shoril.
03:53Right.
03:54It was on YouTube.
03:56It was on many monologues.
03:58Okay.
03:59It was on a school monologues.
04:01Yes.
04:02Which I had written.
04:04Yes.
04:05Which I had written.
04:06And then.
04:07Different monologues.
04:09Different screen presence.
04:12I saw that.
04:13From that.
04:14From that.
04:15From that.
04:16From that.
04:17There was a different intensity.
04:19Different.
04:20Different.
04:21Different.
04:22Different.
04:23Different.
04:25I thought.
04:26It was on the monologues.
04:27It was like.
04:28It was like.
04:29Where is it?
04:30And I didn't know who it is.
04:31I didn't know that.
04:32He is back there.
04:34Yeah.
04:35Correct.
04:36And then I met him.
04:37And.
04:38I gave him the script.
04:39And he told me then.
04:40Okay.
04:41And then.
04:42I said react to the script.
04:43He reacted to the script.
04:44And he said what do you.
04:46To.
04:47Feel about it.
04:48And he said.
04:49He would love to play.
04:50Bablul.
04:51Like.
04:52Would he really get to.
04:53I said.
04:54I didn't promise him the role.
04:55I said.
04:56He has to work.
04:57And.
04:58He has to work.
04:59I also.
05:00Met his parents.
05:01I said.
05:02If he is doing.
05:03Then.
05:04I wouldn't want him.
05:05To do anything else.
05:06Because.
05:07The freshness.
05:08Right.
05:09Plus.
05:10He is a city boy.
05:11Yes.
05:12City boy.
05:13Plus.
05:14The freshness.
05:15The freshness.
05:16So.
05:17Then.
05:18People.
05:19Like.
05:20So.
05:21I needed.
05:22I got into.
05:23That zone.
05:24And.
05:25Then.
05:26Then.
05:27Then.
05:28Then.
05:29Then.
05:30I confirmed.
05:31And.
05:32Then.
05:33Then.
05:34He worked on that.
05:35He got very happy.
05:36That.
05:37Then.
05:38That's how.
05:39He came together.
05:40So.
05:41I think.
05:42Double.
05:43Is being appreciated.
05:44I think.
05:45You said.
05:46People don't know.
05:47That.
05:48He's a singer.
05:49He's a singer.
05:51Interesting.
05:52And.
05:53I think.
05:54He's composed.
05:55He's composed.
05:56A song.
05:57Yes.
05:58For the film.
05:59So.
06:00Multi-talented.
06:01Newcomers.
06:02Can you say.
06:03Ahan.
06:04I think.
06:05Ahan's friend.
06:06Yeah.
06:07Best friend.
06:08So.
06:09They are bringing a freshness to.
06:11Yes.
06:12Because.
06:13And.
06:14They both work very hard.
06:15So.
06:16Appreciative originals.
06:17They both work very hard.
06:18The thing is.
06:19They have also learned from.
06:20Their own friends.
06:21They have seen their own friends.
06:22In the film industry.
06:23Struggled.
06:24All the time.
06:25So.
06:26The thing is.
06:27Their appreciation for hard work.
06:28And their grounding.
06:29Is.
06:30Good.
06:31And they express themselves.
06:32Very.
06:33Openly.
06:34And.
06:35I'm saying.
06:36Very rarely.
06:37Meet.
06:38Ah.
06:39People.
06:40In today's generation.
06:41Who don't.
06:42Who.
06:43Who talk in words.
06:44And not in emojis.
06:45I agree to that.
06:47Yeah.
06:48Yeah.
06:49And.
06:50What about.
06:51Vedika.
06:52And Monica.
06:53I didn't want.
06:54To come on board.
06:55Because.
06:56My thing was.
06:57I needed.
06:58To do that.
06:59My brief for.
07:00It was like.
07:01I wanted.
07:02Kanpur.
07:03Madhuri Dixit.
07:04So.
07:05Look wise.
07:06I saw her.
07:07Look wise.
07:08Look wise.
07:09But.
07:10I don't know.
07:11Who is the girl.
07:12Where is the girl.
07:13Okay.
07:14When I.
07:15Found out.
07:16About her.
07:17I had a meeting.
07:18Realized.
07:19She is from.
07:20Bombay.
07:21Bombay.
07:22She was.
07:23Kind of.
07:24Very.
07:25She knew that.
07:26She's.
07:27Like an ornament.
07:28In the film.
07:29They don't.
07:30They just want the.
07:31Girlfriend of.
07:32Yeah.
07:33Some guy.
07:34And.
07:35So.
07:36I said.
07:37You know.
07:38It's like.
07:39This is the character.
07:40This is the thing.
07:41I'm looking for.
07:42Look wise.
07:43You're perfect.
07:44But.
07:45I need to see.
07:46Whether you can.
07:47One.
07:48Will you respond.
07:49To the script.
07:50Second.
07:51The dancing.
07:52Third.
07:53The language.
07:55She responded to the script.
07:56Very well.
07:57Okay.
07:58And.
07:59Then she worked on the dance.
08:00We shot.
08:01We auditioned her for the dance sequence first.
08:04Because the.
08:05It's a very different kind of a dance.
08:07I gave her brief.
08:09Brief was.
08:10Look at Sapna Chaudhary.
08:11Hmm.
08:12And.
08:13It is.
08:14Not a Hindi film item song.
08:15Okay.
08:16It's a.
08:17It's a.
08:18That kind of a dancing.
08:19And then.
08:20After that.
08:21Was.
08:22The language.
08:23For which they both worked.
08:24Together.
08:25Okay.
08:26And they both went to Kanpur.
08:27With Ranjan Singh.
08:28Yeah.
08:29The poor writer.
08:30Yeah.
08:31And.
08:32And.
08:33That's it.
08:34After.
08:35They were ready.
08:36It was about.
08:37Finding a producer.
08:39And.
08:40Then.
08:41I.
08:42By chance.
08:43Met.
08:44Then head of Amazon.
08:46On a.
08:47Plane.
08:48Long flight to Melbourne.
08:49Okay.
08:50And flight from him.
08:51I got the script.
08:52And.
08:53It was good.
08:54Right.
08:55And then it worked.
08:56And then.
08:57Monica was the last one.
08:58To come on board.
08:59Hmm.
09:00She's also an amazing actor.
09:01Monica.
09:02As an actor.
09:03There was no doubt.
09:04Monica.
09:05I had.
09:06Auditioned her also.
09:07Hmm.
09:08And as an actor.
09:09She's phenomenal.
09:10She's.
09:11So well trained.
09:12Everything else.
09:13Now.
09:14It was up to her.
09:15Because she would want to play the role.
09:17That goes from the age of 20 to 30.
09:19Hmm.
09:20And.
09:21Film.
09:22Music.
09:23Again.
09:24Trademark.
09:25Organically.
09:26Yeah.
09:27First.
09:28I reached out to Dhruv Ghanekar.
09:29And.
09:30He.
09:31Again read the script.
09:32I said.
09:33I need a sound.
09:34The first song that he made us hear was Dear Country.
09:36Hmm.
09:37And that set the tone for the film.
09:39And.
09:40And.
09:41After that.
09:42We didn't have any brief.
09:43Okay.
09:44So I shared a script.
09:45And.
09:46Then.
09:47Dhruv.
09:48I said.
09:49Three, four songs.
09:50Then it was IPL.
09:51Then it was IPL.
09:52What time Dhruv.
09:53Dhruv does a lot of ad films.
09:54Yeah.
09:55He had gotten busy.
09:56Uh.
09:57And we.
09:58Also.
09:59Then.
10:00Amizwan.
10:01Helped me.
10:02Set up meeting with.
10:03Andraa Saikya.
10:04Manan Babaj.
10:05Other people.
10:06They came on board.
10:07Again.
10:08My process is the same.
10:09I share the script.
10:10I let them react.
10:11I said.
10:12You tell me where you think.
10:13In what situation.
10:15Hmm.
10:16A song can come in.
10:18So Dave D.
10:19Maybe you have done that.
10:21I have done that.
10:22I have done that.
10:23I have done that.
10:24You ask them to react.
10:26Uh huh.
10:27In the sense.
10:28I share.
10:29What I have.
10:30And then they respond to it.
10:31The lyricist also.
10:32Everyone.
10:33No, no.
10:34There are other lyrics.
10:35No, no.
10:36Music director.
10:38Picks their own lyricist.
10:42That's how it is.
10:43If they ask me.
10:44Then I give them someone.
10:47Like for Arjeet song.
10:49Saikya asked me for.
10:51Who to collaborate with.
10:53I gave him.
10:54Dr. Sagar.
10:55Or Shashvat for film.
10:57If somebody asks me.
10:59Then I give them lyricists.
11:00Who are.
11:01You have done Arjeet song.
11:02You have done Arjeet song.
11:04So is there something.
11:05Is there something.
11:06Sequel.
11:07Is there something.
11:08Because it's a cult thing.
11:09So.
11:10Arjeet song.
11:11I think.
11:12He was made.
11:13No.
11:14Like.
11:15No.
11:16I don't think.
11:17I don't think.
11:18I have to make a sequel.
11:19Of Saptaya.
11:20There's no sequel.
11:21Saptaya's dead.
11:22I mean.
11:23That type of.
11:24Film.
11:25I don't know.
11:26I don't know.
11:27Arjeet has.
11:28I think.
11:29Just made a film.
11:30Recently.
11:31Which.
11:32I don't know.
11:33What it is about.
11:34Okay.
11:35Would you like.
11:36To talk about.
11:37Evils.
11:38Of social media.
11:39I don't know.
11:40The social media.
11:41Is out of hand.
11:42I don't know.
11:43I don't understand.
11:44It's like.
11:45It's like.
11:46It's very.
11:47It's suddenly.
11:48It's viral.
11:49It's suddenly.
11:50It's suddenly.
11:51It's suddenly.
11:52It's suddenly.
11:53In some films.
11:54It's also.
11:55What are the evils.
11:57Woven into the story.
11:58There are so many films.
11:59New age.
12:00So.
12:01This is also.
12:02Like.
12:03No.
12:04It's also.
12:05But this is.
12:06This film is set.
12:07In a period.
12:08Between.
12:0986 to.
12:102016.
12:11So.
12:12Until.
12:13Until.
12:14Until.
12:15Until.
12:16Social media.
12:17It's so much.
12:18The film.
12:19But.
12:20It's not.
12:21So.
12:22Social media.
12:23Is out of hand.
12:24I don't know.
12:25So.
12:26What is the biggest challenge.
12:27You have faced.
12:28As a director.
12:29You know.
12:30You have.
12:31A little.
12:32A big challenge.
12:33You have.
12:34Especially.
12:35Every.
12:36Film is a challenge.
12:37Every.
12:38Film.
12:39Is a challenge.
12:40To get it right.
12:41That's your own personal challenge.
12:42It's a challenge.
12:43It's not a big challenge.
12:44It's a challenge.
12:45It's like.
12:46I believe in.
12:47Authenticity.
12:48I believe in.
12:49Authenticity.
12:50I believe in.
12:51Creating something.
12:52That looks authentic.
12:53Comes across as authentic.
12:54And.
12:55The challenge is to get it right, get it right for it to feel authentic and for it to not become something
13:10It's a big thing
13:11It's a struggle and fight
13:14But as an actor, Anuragap acting is doing quite well, I think many films have been equally
13:19I think actor, director, if I'm new to you then I'm not sure
13:23But somebody else is the director, the producer or the writer
13:29So how do you feel restricted in that?
13:32I work the same way the way my actors work with me in the sense like the way I work with my actors
13:38I become an actor, I kill the director
13:41The director cannot come in between
13:44The director in you
13:46The director in me has to step aside
13:48You are a phenomenal actor as well
13:49The director in me has to step aside and I am as good as the director
13:53If the director knows what he wants from me
13:55Because one, they are not
13:57I am working in a language that I am unfamiliar with
14:00So if the director knows what they want from me
14:04And they are non-compromising
14:07And I am willing to go that far then
14:11With them
14:12Okay
14:13So that's a big thing
14:15Big task I would say
14:16To stop the director in you from
14:18That's not a big task for me
14:20Big task is to get it right
14:22It's always
14:23See, you can do anything
14:24I mean, I always say
14:25I don't want to make food
14:26If I take it in my hand
14:28So I look at it like
14:31Either do it or don't do it
14:34Right
14:36So after that
14:37You will be able to go
14:41And
14:42Coming to your
14:43Recent films
14:44In which you are a producer
14:46Or maybe you represented
14:47Bad girl
14:49Something about it
14:50Pandar
14:51And
14:52Songs of forgotten trees
14:53And
14:54Venice
14:55Bell State
14:56Yeah, yeah
14:57So you want to say something about these films
14:58And how do you pick them?
15:00I
15:01See, some films I pick
15:02Some films Ranjan Singh picks
15:04Song of forgotten trees
15:05The credit goes to Ranjan
15:07And Romil
15:08And
15:09Ribansu
15:10And people like that
15:11I am the last one to come on board
15:12Your team
15:13To
15:14Support the film
15:17As much as I can
15:19But
15:20Some films
15:21I pick
15:22And
15:23Ranjan comes
15:24To
15:26Vote me
15:27As much as
15:28But
15:29What is your list?
15:30I don't have any criteria
15:31My criteria is that I like films
15:32Plus
15:33Genuinely
15:34Now
15:35There are lots of
15:36I think
15:37A lot of us
15:38Filmmakers
15:39Have
15:40Kind of decided
15:41That
15:42You know
15:43We are in a loop
15:45Formula films
15:46And
15:47To break that
15:48A lot of us
15:49Like
15:50Motwani
15:51Nikhil Advani
15:52Kiran Rao
15:53A lot of
15:54Filmmakers
15:55From South
15:56A lot of people
15:57Have come together
15:58We have released Stolen
15:59We have released
16:00We have a lot of films
16:01We want to come out
16:02And
16:03We really like these films
16:04We want these films to come out
16:06Right
16:07And that's why we are doing this also
16:09Because it's important
16:10For these films to come out
16:11To also get us out of that loop
16:13Of making the same kind of films again and again
16:15I don't know
16:16I don't know
16:17It's important
16:18I think
16:19It's important
16:20Now
16:21Kiran Rao
16:22And Humans in the loop
16:23Released
16:24Now
16:25Nikhil Advani
16:26And all those people are supporting
16:27Sabar Ponda
16:28Right
16:29That's
16:30We are now releasing Jughnama
16:32So
16:33The idea is to
16:36Support a lot of good cinema
16:39Because
16:40It's important
16:41It's important
16:42To disrupt
16:43It's important
16:44To
16:45Do more things
16:46It's important
16:47It's important
16:48To
16:49Do more things
16:50You are Jughnama
16:51Disrupt all
16:52Like I said
16:53It's important
16:54To
16:55Create an alternate taste
16:56Otherwise
16:57What is
16:58That
16:59Industry
17:00Increasingly
17:01Formula
17:02And
17:03That
17:04One
17:05One
17:06One
17:07One
17:08One
17:09It's part of
17:10Time
17:11Time
17:12So
17:13Now
17:14Sautaki film
17:15I think
17:1630 crore or something
17:17And it's done
17:18And doing so
17:19It is breaking all kind of records
17:21Yeah
17:22I'm dying to see that film
17:23So you think
17:24Bollywood
17:25They can recreate that magic
17:26Where is that?
17:27Scale
17:28I don't know
17:29I think
17:30They don't have the courage
17:32To
17:33Make a film
17:34Like that
17:35In that kind of a cost
17:37with a female lead at the centre, they don't have the courage
17:45Will that be the courage?
17:47I don't know, I think they have made films like that only I can talk say Gangubai, Jigra
17:55It's only with Aliyah
17:57Maybe Zoya can do, I mean she's a good friend for you also
18:00I'm saying that's on the top of that
18:02But no one will do it, Loka is also
18:04If you look at what I have heard of the story, I have not seen the film, Mottwani saw the film
18:10And he described the film
18:12It creates a word as believable, you know so many mythology
18:19Where are there, where are there, where are there, where are there
18:20There's a lot of mythology in the south
18:22No, there are people who think in their language
18:26They speak in their language
18:28People who don't come here, they think in English
18:31They translate it into Hindi
18:33That's where the big problem lies
18:34They have to work a lot, I think
18:36While you would go to come back
18:37From
18:38No, they have to be self-aware
18:42Self-aware
18:43But Sayara, you should say something like that
18:47I would say
18:48What would I say?
18:49Everyone would think that this war 2
18:52That money is worth it, it's Sayara
18:54When it was released, it was like that
18:57That's why they should learn it
18:59You have to be honest with what you are trying to do
19:04Formula, Formula, Formula
19:06We will do it, we will do it, we will do it
19:08We will do it, we will do it
19:09We will do it, we will do it, we will do it
19:11That's right
19:12Coming back to your films, do you have any film that is closest to your heart?
19:19I mean, all are your babies
19:20No, no, no, no, it's not like that film that's not close to your heart
19:27Everything, I do films that I want to do and they are close to my heart
19:31And any character in any film that is
19:36Yes
19:37It is a bit of a
19:38Listen to me
19:39It is difficult
19:40It is difficult
19:41It is very difficult
19:42Because you have written most of them
19:44Yeah, it is very hard to pick
19:47Okay
19:48And there is something you want to do, and not you have
19:52What I want to do, I do
19:53You do
19:54You do
19:55What I want to do, I do
19:57It is time to do
19:58Okay
19:59I want to do it for 8-9 years, why not?
20:01What I want to do, I do
20:03I am writing
20:04Of course
20:05And once I don't sit alone, so
20:07I am going to sit with one script
20:09I am writing non-stop
20:10Are you still writing with a notebook or a pen?
20:15Are you still writing with a pen or a computer?
20:17No, no, no, I am still writing with a hand
20:20I am also old school like that
20:22It has been written
20:24What is it?
20:25I am still writing with a pen
20:27Because of mobile and a laptop
20:28No, it is not
20:29I am still writing with a pen
20:30I am writing with a pen
20:32And I enjoy writing with a pen
20:34It is very good
20:36Let's end it with
20:39Some of your unreleased films
20:41Like Kennedy
20:42In India
20:43Is there a chance to do that?
20:44Yes, it will be
20:45It will be
20:46It was in MAMI
20:47It was in MAMI
20:48It was in MAMI
20:49It was in MAMI
20:50It was in MAMI
20:51It was in MAMI
20:52It was in MAMI
20:53It was in MAMI
20:54It was in MAMI
20:55It was in MAMI
20:56It was in MAMI
20:57See, you have to move ahead
20:58I was learning a lot earlier in life
20:59That
21:00If you go in a lot of trouble
21:01It will not happen
21:02It will not happen
21:03It is a corporate structure
21:04People have to go in
21:05They have to pay for their money
21:06And
21:07And
21:08The film I made
21:09I gave
21:11The cut
21:12I gave
21:13The cut
21:14I gave
21:15The cut
21:16It will not be altered
21:17Because
21:18The cut
21:19The final cut is my
21:20The IP
21:21My share
21:22Now
21:23I don't want to do it
21:24I don't want to do it
21:25I don't want to do it
21:26But
21:27I don't want to focus on Nishanxi
21:29And what is next?
21:31Now
21:32I will focus on Nishanxi
21:33What is next?
21:34I will finish my pending acting
21:35After that
21:37I will think
21:38After that
21:39But
21:40Nishanxi
21:41How do you think about the story
21:42And the plot
21:43How do you think about the characters?
21:44How do you think about the characters?
21:45No, we are not thinking about the story
21:46It is not mathematics
21:48No, it is not a one line
21:50No, it is not a one line
21:51Mathematics
21:52It is a very organic
21:53And the story is linear
21:55If you think about the story
21:57It is linear
21:58There is a zone
21:59But
22:00It is not linear
22:01And
22:03There are two brothers
22:04And two brothers
22:05Their stories
22:06Their mother
22:07Their stories
22:08Their stories
22:09Their past
22:10Their stories
22:11Their stories
22:12Their stories
22:13Their stories
22:14Their stories
22:15Their stories
22:16There are many things
22:17And
22:18In the 30th year
22:20What kind of things
22:21are altered
22:22That is
22:23Literally
22:24I call it
22:25Crime and punishment
22:26Kind of a story
22:27In the family
22:28Okay
22:30Okay
22:31Thanks for talking to us Anurag
22:32I would have liked to
22:33You know
22:34Continue this
