00:00It's fun to, like, hijack a Mr. Beast video
00:02and turn it into a movie.
00:03This looks like if Mr. Beast and Severance had a baby.
00:07What's it like directing Jimmy?
00:08Directing Mr. Beast to be subtle? Like, what?
00:11He's the most outlandish guy.
00:12Did you guys have any disagreements with Jimmy on the set?
00:16Hey, we're Styx!
00:17We're breaking down our biggest video ever
00:19that we made with Mr. Beast.
00:20I'm gonna show you all the little details,
00:21the behind-the-scenes, the VFX shots.
00:23The mistakes.
00:24This is one of our bigger VFX shots.
00:26We had to make him look like he was falling,
00:28so we put him up on this conveyor belt.
00:30If we just shoot them in front of this grey pillar,
00:33we can change everything else.
00:35What did you guys do to make this look so cinematic?
00:37There's a filmmaking technique
00:38that every YouTuber should know about.
00:39I like how you guys respect the rules of YouTube
00:41and then break them.
00:42This actually isn't Jimmy. That's a double.
00:44Get the camera. Shoot it right now.
00:46Shots fired. You're calling out Hershey's.
00:48This is the part that Mr. Beast was most afraid of us pulling off.
00:58Make sure you subscribe and ring the bell,
01:00because we also have a two-hour interview coming up with Styx.
01:03And I think it's one of our best interviews yet.
01:05We get into their crazy journey as YouTubers,
01:07how they ended up making videos with Mark Rober,
01:09Ryan Trahan, and now Mr. Beast, and so much more.
01:12And if you're already subscribed,
01:13then go to ythackpack.com to get our free YouTube hack pack
01:17with all our best tips, tools, and templates to grow on YouTube today.
01:20From our intro and thumbnail templates
01:22to our 100 viral ideas for any niche,
01:25we constantly update our hack pack as we interview more creators
01:28so you have their latest and greatest for free.
01:30All right, now back to the video.
01:31All right, guys, I'm so excited.
01:32What are we about to break down?
01:33So this is the movie we made for Mr. Beast's brand new
01:36Feastables chocolate milk.
01:37Yeah, this is your biggest production yet.
01:39Our biggest production yet.
01:40So let's jump into the BTS.
01:41You can ask us anything.
01:42Amazing. Let's go.
01:43This is a $1 billion chocolate factory,
01:46the most expensive chocolate factory in the world.
01:49And I was invited for an exclusive tour of the inside of it.
01:52So as a peace offering,
01:53I brought an unreleased Feastables product.
01:55Let's go check it out.
01:57Jimmy, how did we get in?
01:59I thought you talked to a guy.
02:00I did talk to a guy.
02:01Door's not opening.
02:03Let me in.
02:04Well, bang on the door.
02:05I did.
02:07Okay, so this actually doesn't look like a movie just yet.
02:10We wanted to start this out looking identical to a Mr. Beast video.
02:14And if we did our job right,
02:15then you would have been tricked by the Mr. Beast 2 channel.
02:18You clicked on for a $1 billion chocolate factory tour,
02:21and it turned into this epic movie.
02:23Yeah, I like how you guys respect the rules of YouTube,
02:25but then break them.
02:26Like you did with Ryan Trahan's Joyride movie.
02:28Yeah, I mean...
02:29Like starting out in his room, but it's really a set.
02:32Yeah, exactly.
02:33It's fun to like hijack a Mr. Beast video and turn it into a movie.
02:39Hello?
02:40Is anyone here?
02:50The first thing to notice is this actually isn't Jimmy.
02:53That's a double that we searched really hard.
02:56We've gotten pretty good at getting doppelgangers for creators.
02:59Yeah.
03:00So we found this guy who's 6'5 and looks like Jimmy from behind.
03:03Got it.
03:04We actually got a haircut from Jimmy's barber
03:06to make sure he looks exactly like Jimmy.
03:08Wow.
03:09Jimmy's so spread thin along like across so many shoots.
03:11So we didn't have much of Jimmy's time to work with,
03:13so we thought this would be a great way to maximize the shoot.
03:16And just so people know,
03:17like now we're like switching to look at a behind-the-scenes shot
03:20that you guys are sharing with us, like not many people have seen.
03:22So this is not Jimmy here.
03:24What did you guys replace this tennis ball with again?
03:26It helps create a 3D space,
03:28so you can recreate the room
03:30and it looks like the dimensions are accurate.
03:32Huh.
03:33It starts out here as a perspective trick.
03:35And then as we zoom out,
03:36you see that it was all just a scam, an illusion.
03:39Wow.
03:40Now you're realizing real time with Jimmy, this is...
03:42This place is fake.
03:44What?
03:49What is going on here?
03:50Okay, so we put the blue screen just so we see Jimmy alone.
03:53Yeah.
03:54But we had to make him look like he was falling.
03:56So we put him up on this conveyor belt
03:58and had him like wailing his hands.
04:01We also had someone in the background like flapping his shirt and his hair
04:05so it looks like the wind.
04:06We did a dolly pull out.
04:08Huh.
04:09So the camera's on a rails and we dollied out.
04:12So it looks like he's falling away from camera.
04:14Wow.
04:15Yeah.
04:16So hopefully with all these effects,
04:17it'll look like he's actually falling through a trap door.
04:19Hmm.
04:20Very cool.
04:23That's not Jimmy.
04:24Yeah.
04:25Isn't that crazy?
04:26Yeah.
04:27And he deliberately kind of shows...
04:28Yeah.
04:29He said if you're gonna look anyway,
04:30look away from the camera.
04:31Yeah.
04:35Jimmy's getting up.
04:36Okay, now it's Jimmy.
04:37That's the real Jimmy.
04:38That's the real Jimmy.
04:39Wait, so tell me about this set
04:41because this looks like if like Mr. Beast and Severance had a baby.
04:46This would be this video.
04:48Yeah.
04:49Like what is going on here?
04:50It looks very bland and small.
04:52Yeah.
04:53Tell me about how you designed this.
04:54This was the perfect room.
04:55It was a tiny cube in one of Jimmy's studios.
04:58And so we painted the walls.
05:00It used to be green.
05:01We got new carpet
05:02and we brought in these specific chairs
05:04to give you this very weird feeling
05:06like he's in some spooky waiting room
05:10and he has no clue where he is.
05:12So I think it gives you like that very off-kilter feel.
05:15Yeah.
05:32Now this looks like a crazy setup or a crazy room
05:35but really this is like two flat walls
05:38with pipes built into them.
05:40And it's not actually a whole pipe room.
05:42So we just shot it from this profile angle.
05:44We built these pipe walls that could kind of shift
05:47into any configuration we wanted.
05:49So we can create any set that we need.
05:51Oh, interesting.
05:52So that helps like this scene for example.
05:53We can just put these pipe walls behind him
05:55and create like this hallway without having to.
05:57Yeah, it made it very versatile.
05:59So like we could create different spaces within this one room.
06:02Oh, these are just like sections that you can move around.
06:05Yeah.
06:06On wheels.
06:07Oh, wow.
06:08So anytime you need to show the warehouse,
06:09you had a background.
06:10Yeah.
06:11Cool.
06:12Scanning.
06:13Access denied.
06:23Wait.
06:24You're calling out Hershey's.
06:25Oh.
06:26We didn't say that.
06:27I said it.
06:28Not them.
06:29Why would you think that?
06:30It's representative of the big chocolate industry.
06:33Yeah.
06:34But yeah.
06:35So Jimmy sees this chocolate.
06:37And what do you think Mr. Beast would do?
06:39Would he eat chocolate?
06:40Oh, we've seen it.
06:41Or would he eat the feastables?
06:42Feastables.
06:43Exactly.
06:44Every day of the week.
06:49That was a fun shot like tilting down.
06:51Tilting back up.
06:52Uniform.
06:53Detected.
06:54Open mouth.
06:55What?
06:56Chocolate consumed.
06:57Access granted.
07:06I mean, this is just a crazy production.
07:08How much did this cost to make?
07:09This is like a 200k production.
07:11Wow.
07:12So a lot of resources went to making this look so good on camera.
07:16Yeah.
07:17And we wanted to make sure it felt like that as well.
07:19Yeah.
07:20Like everything was a set you guys created from scratch?
07:22Yeah.
07:23Yes.
07:24We helped from the Beast team.
07:25We actually got to work with the Beast team.
07:26Yeah.
07:27So they...
07:28Jimmy gave us his awesome builders and then we designed it all.
07:31And it was like a fun collaboration with them building it all.
07:34It's crazy how fast they work.
07:35Yeah.
07:36How much they're able to help with like these last minute builds.
07:39Yeah.
07:40And how long did it take?
07:41Like I saw you guys put together storyboards for a lot of the scenes.
07:43Like how long did this take to put together?
07:45It was probably like a few weeks of planning and scripting.
07:49And then within like two weeks we went from like nothing to the whole set built.
07:55Wow.
07:56And then one set shooting.
07:57So about a month total.
07:58Yeah.
07:59Hello?
08:04Can you spot the cameo from the Stix Boys?
08:07Oh!
08:08Is that you guys?
08:09Yeah.
08:10We were like thinking this shot looks a bit empty.
08:12It needs something in the middle.
08:13So we put on the costumes ourselves and got into place and like get our own cameo.
08:16Yeah.
08:17That's perfect.
08:18And it's actually interesting.
08:19How much stuff changes from your storyboards and your script to the actual production?
08:22Like little stuff like that.
08:23Is that out of the ordinary or you guys are very by the book?
08:26We're pretty like locked in on what the vision is.
08:30So like we try and stick to the vision.
08:32Yeah.
08:33So like the storyboards and the script.
08:34But it's always fun like this.
08:36Like maybe like 20% of the time we like, you know, get spontaneous and put something into the shot.
08:41Come up with a brand new shot.
08:42Yeah.
08:43But we've found that when we don't come prepared with a shot list, like from the beginning of the script to the end, it can get so messy on set.
08:50There's so many moving pieces and details we need to nail.
08:53Yeah.
08:54And we'll show some of your storyboards.
08:55I was really impressed just seeing them before and now seeing the after.
08:58It's amazing.
08:59Yeah.
09:00I mean, Lucas strolls all of them.
09:01It's pretty impressive.
09:02That's incredible.
09:03I was told by some guy I'd be getting a tour.
09:10Whoa.
09:11Whoa.
09:12Whoa.
09:13Whoa.
09:14Whoa.
09:15All right.
09:16Excuse me.
09:17I need my briefcase.
09:18Let go of me.
09:19Why would you even need that?
09:21Yeah.
09:23Oh, got it.
09:25Oh, no.
09:35There's no other way in.
09:36Jimmy's toast.
09:37Uh, should we go get help?
09:38We're not doing anything until we get further instruction from Jimmy.
09:40Oh, how loyal.
09:41I see what you're trying to do.
09:43What?
09:44You're hoping Jimmy's dead.
09:45What a horrible thing to say.
09:46Oh, he's definitely dead.
09:47Why would I be hoping that?
09:48I mean, we're all thinking the same thing.
09:50The question is, how do we settle this like responsible adults?
09:53Settle what?
09:54Who gets Jimmy's channel?
09:55Oh.
09:56Oh.
09:57That's good.
09:59I mean, we could 1v1 for it.
10:01Just don't tell Carl or Tariq.
10:03So, um, this massive chocolate factory, we actually shot in front of another building.
10:06Wait, can we like, let's put that on screen.
10:08Yeah.
10:09Okay.
10:10So, yeah.
10:11So, wow, this looks very different.
10:12This is not a chocolate factory.
10:13Yeah.
10:14I thought if we just shoot them in front of this gray pillar, we can change everything
10:18else pretty easy.
10:19Got it.
10:20Wow, movie magic.
10:21Yeah.
10:22And the boys, the boys did really good too.
10:24Yeah, yeah.
10:25Their acting was...
10:26They always bring good levity to it.
10:27Yeah.
10:28The CEO would like to have a work.
10:30All right, get it.
10:31Chill, chill, chill.
10:32Okay.
10:33All right, what's...
10:34Hello, Mr. Donaldson.
10:36We hope you enjoyed your complimentary chocolate on arrival.
10:39Uh, are you the guy that I spoke to?
10:42Yes, I'm the guy.
10:43Uh, I think there's a misunderstanding.
10:46I was supposed to be, you know, getting a tour.
10:48There is no misunderstanding, Jimmy.
10:50We are well aware of what you've been doing.
10:52You've become, in recent years, quite the chocolatier.
10:56But the truth is, you have a lot to learn.
11:00Our company has been in the chocolate business for nearly 200 years.
11:03We have certain standards, certain...
11:07Wow, shots fired.
11:08Like, if it wasn't clear who is, like, Big Chocolate and who's the big bad in this commercial,
11:13it's becoming obvious.
11:14Yeah.
11:15That's right.
11:16Was this part of the set design to make them feel archaic?
11:18Yes.
11:19Yes.
11:20Yeah, we wanted to have, like, a speaker that felt like it was stuck in the past.
11:24Hmm.
11:25That didn't have a real face to it.
11:26Hmm.
11:27So we thought of this, like, gramophone-type horn as the CEO.
11:31Yeah.
11:32Very Severance-inspired as well.
11:33Yeah.
11:34If you want to make chocolate, Jimmy, I'd advise you get back in line.
11:37And stop messing with the way it's always been.
11:40I didn't mean to disrupt the work line.
11:42Oh, Jimmy.
11:43I'm not talking about the work line.
11:46Have a lovely day.
11:49This is when we got shocked.
11:50Like, oh my gosh, he could actually do some acting.
11:53Yeah.
11:54Yeah, I mean, that was a really good take from Jimmy.
11:56I'm wondering, like, were these all the first takes?
11:58Did you have to give him some coaching?
11:59Like, do you have, like, an earlier take?
12:01Yeah, we can show you the first take.
12:02Oh, really? Okay.
12:03I think there's been a misunderstanding.
12:04I was supposed to be getting a tour.
12:07I think there's a misunderstanding.
12:10I was supposed to be, you know, getting a tour.
12:12So yeah, how did you get him from that to what we saw in the final?
12:16So the biggest difference, especially coming from YouTube and being Jimmy, is he needs to be loud and big and very expressionate.
12:22In film, it's actually more powerful if you, like, turn it down.
12:26More subtle.
12:27More subtle.
12:28And so then when he did it again, it just looks so real.
12:30Like, he was actually in the situation.
12:32I think what helped was we told him, like, the lines are there as, like, a guide.
12:35But if it feels more natural to, like, phrase something a different way, go for it.
12:39And so we gave him that liberty to, like, speak how he would speak and that helped him get into the character a bit more.
12:43That's such a good note.
12:44Yeah, I find there's, like, different performances.
12:46One to YouTube, two to film, which is very subtle.
12:48And then even, like, looking at Broadway or theater performers, it's even bigger than YouTube.
12:52Yeah.
12:53But it's so funny, like, directing Mr. Beast to be subtle, like, what?
12:57Like, he's the most outlandish guy, you know?
13:00Yeah.
13:01But he did it really well.
13:02I mean, to, like, give notes to the biggest creator in the world, was that intimidating?
13:06A little.
13:07In theory, it was very intimidating.
13:09Thinking about directing him was just like, how are we gonna do that?
13:11Yeah, like, leading up to it, we were like, I can't believe we're gonna direct Jimmy.
13:15But then on set, it was actually pretty good.
13:18This was actually the first scene we shot with Jimmy in chronological order.
13:21So, once we got this in the can, we were like, oh, we got this.
13:24He's gonna crush this.
13:25Oh, interesting.
13:26You guys had a shot list that was out of order.
13:28Yes.
13:29100%.
13:30Yeah.
13:31Just to maximize your time there.
13:32Yes, definitely.
13:33So, pressure was on.
13:34So, you got this, and then you're like, we're off to the races.
13:35That's right.
13:36Or are there any moments of tension?
13:37Like, did you guys have any disagreements with Jimmy on set?
13:39He's not used to, like, cinematic lighting.
13:41Yeah.
13:42So, like, he's looking at the shots with us and, like, kind of confused why we're lighting
13:45in a certain way.
13:46Yeah.
13:47It's like, where's the key light?
13:48It's like, we need to look cinematic, Jimmy.
13:49We need to, like, be backlit so that, you know?
13:51One time, he was like, why is there so many different colors on my face?
13:54We're like...
13:55Color contrast.
13:56It's important.
13:58Cinema.
13:59Yeah, cinema.
14:00We'll get right back to the breakdown.
14:01But first, I've got to say a huge thank you to the entire Feastables team for sending
14:04us some of their first bottles of their Feastables chocolate milk and for sponsoring this video.
14:09I've actually been drinking them while we've been editing this video.
14:12And I love that it's grade A whole milk, real dairy, packed with 13 grams of protein
14:16and a good source of calcium, potassium, and vitamins A and D.
14:19But here's the thing that I love most.
14:21It's all made with fair trade cocoa.
14:23And something that Jimmy has been talking about for a while.
14:25It's cool to see him and the team pull off a product that's ethically sourced, that farmers
14:29get paid a living income reference price, and it supports their mission to end child labor
14:33in the chocolate industry.
14:34So go out and support and grab Feastables chocolate milk right now at Walmart, 7-Eleven,
14:38Speedway locations nationwide.
14:40Just look for the single bottles or the six pack.
14:42Again, huge thank you to Jimmy and the Feastables team for supporting this video.
14:45And now let's get back to the breakdown.
14:47It's so funny watching your stuff because here I'm seeing the product and I'm reminded,
15:10it's a commercial, but everything else about this feels like a movie.
15:13Like, was there extra pressure on this shot to get it right?
15:15Well really, yeah, this is the first time anyone in the world is seeing this product.
15:19So it took a lot longer than it looks.
15:20We wanted to feel like the bottle was glowing.
15:22Yeah.
15:23The lighting, the positioning of the hand, making sure you could see the bottle at a good angle.
15:27Yeah.
15:28All super important.
15:37Wow.
15:38Jon, that's our favorite shot from the film.
15:39I love it.
15:40Yeah, you guys, I feel like that's kind of a signature, the parallax that you guys do.
15:42I mean, also Severance inspired.
15:44Yeah.
15:45They stole it from Jaws.
15:46There's nothing new under the sun.
15:47Yeah.
15:48But recreating it for YouTube is super interesting.
15:50Yeah.
15:51Definitely.
16:01Who are you?
16:02Shh.
16:03I'm gonna get you out of here.
16:04Why are you helping me?
16:05Oh, my briefcase.
16:07Shh.
16:08These are more of the walls.
16:10Yes.
16:11How cool is the set?
16:12That's awesome.
16:13So we just wheeled those in, positioned the pipes how we liked it, and some haze, and it
16:17looks like a whole new...
16:18Yeah.
16:19This is a bare place that he uses for a lot of his YouTube videos.
16:22You've turned into this as cinematic hallway.
16:24Wow.
16:25Yeah, yeah.
16:26That's right.
16:27I tried your chocolate milk.
16:28Yeah?
16:29Was it good?
16:30What's going on?
16:31I remembered something.
16:33My dad was a truck driver, and in the summer, I'd ride along on his work route with him.
16:38This factory was one of his stops.
16:40He'd load all of the chocolate ingredients through this door right here, and the keys.
16:45He's left right here.
16:47And you only remember this now?
16:48I don't think I'm the only worker with memory problems.
16:51Come on, let's get out of here.
16:56But what about them?
17:00We can't leave them behind.
17:01Is there any way I can make a call?
17:04Surely there's a phone somewhere in here.
17:12We need a distraction.
17:15Everybody, this is a mystery briefcase!
17:19That's not Jimmy.
17:20This is not.
17:21This is, again, the back of the head shot.
17:22Yeah.
17:23That's amazing.
17:24And inside this briefcase could be $100,000.
17:27The keys to a Lamborghini.
17:29Or a beverage that gives you back all your childhood memories.
17:33And whoever takes their hand off of it last, keeps what's inside.
17:37Good luck!
17:39These are interesting little nods to, obviously, who Jimmy is and his channel.
17:43Yeah.
17:44Like, in fact, he seems most natural here.
17:45Yeah, this is where he just got up and he did his thing.
17:47Did his thing, yeah.
17:48He definitely improved some lines here as well.
17:50But it just made sense to, like, let Mr. Beast be Mr. Beast as a character as well.
17:54And not, like, try and make him someone else that he's not.
17:59What is all this commotion?
18:01Who is responsible for this?
18:03This looks like a nod to Beast Games.
18:11Yeah.
18:12And the red phones.
18:13That's one of the red ferns from Beast Games.
18:15Imagine the red telephone was in a movie and you could call and ask for whatever you wanted.
18:18And, like, we're turning that into, like, a plot point here.
18:22There's a filmmaking technique that every YouTuber should know about.
18:24It's called Chekhov's gun.
18:26Yeah.
18:27So that's, like, in a movie, if you set something up, you need to pay it off.
18:30So, for example, if you do a close-up of a gun on a wall early in the movie,
18:35then that better be the gun that kills the bad guy at the end.
18:39Huh.
18:40So in the CEO scene at the beginning, you can see the red telephone in the background.
18:43But you didn't realize it's going to be a key player at the end of the film.
18:46Oh, interesting.
18:47Yeah.
18:48So that was something we're thinking about, like, every single part of the story should be there for a reason.
18:53And the more you lean into that, even as a YouTuber,
18:56I think the audience will really feel the intention behind every single frame.
19:00Yeah.
19:01And maybe get a double watch.
19:02Yeah.
19:03You know, go back.
19:04You gotta double check it.
19:05Yeah.
19:06That's true.
19:07Winner keeps the channel.
19:11Why does this look so much better than when you see it, like, filmed for YouTube?
19:15Like, there's something about it.
19:17Is there, like, a haze in the sky?
19:18Yes.
19:19Like, what did you guys do to make this look so cinematic?
19:22The first thing is haze.
19:24Because then that makes the light kind of travel.
19:26But it's also the direction we're shooting.
19:28We make sure it's, like, backlit.
19:30And then we have our own lights accentuating that,
19:33so that it feels, like, quite cinematic when it's got backlight.
19:36And you can see what the haze is doing to the light here,
19:38where it just kind of, like, fades the highlights into the rest of the scene a little bit more.
19:42And then, on top of that, I guess the camera and lenses we're using also give us that effect.
19:46What did you guys shoot with?
19:47Well, this we shot with an ARRI Mini.
19:49Oh, wow.
19:50And we had anamorphic lenses.
19:51So that's really the thing that makes it look like a movie.
19:54How much do those cameras cost?
19:56They could be, like, around 40k or plus.
19:58Wow.
19:59Yeah, with all of the lenses and everything.
20:01The expensive kit.
20:02Yeah.
20:05Um, hello?
20:06Guys, I need you to do exactly what I say, okay?
20:09Wait, who is this?
20:10I'm a friend of Jimmy's.
20:11Can you prove that?
20:12Is this Nolan?
20:13Jimmy told me to say hi to your mom.
20:16Oh, okay.
20:17What do you need us to do?
20:20Who's gonna win?
20:21Oh, you're out.
20:22Nope, you took your head out.
20:23Get out of here.
20:24Everybody, please, settle down and return to your stations.
20:27Yeah.
20:35This guy just discovered that Jimmy never had.
20:37That's right.
20:38The old chocolate brand.
20:39Yes.
20:40Yeah.
20:41Um, these are some interesting, like, actors that you picked.
20:43Like, do you, like, what's the casting process like for a Styx commercial?
20:46We, on this one, we had someone dedicated to casting.
20:49Oh, wow.
20:50So they were finding a bunch of actors and extras and they would show us different options
20:56and we would pick based on, like, their show reel and then we'd ask them to do an audition.
20:59Huh.
21:00Yeah.
21:01So it was quite a bit of a process because we wanted to make sure we had, like, the perfect people for each role.
21:05Yeah.
21:06Oh, you took your hand off your own.
21:08Oh, it looks like somebody didn't finish their chocolate. Sound the alarm.
21:15Oh, oh, oh. Oh, God. Oh, God.
21:19I guess Jimmy's still alive.
21:21Yeah, we'll put circle back on who gets the channel.
21:23And then we have this private jet that we were able to swing for this shoot
21:27and just upped the production value by so much.
21:29This is an actual private jet.
21:30This is an actual private jet.
21:31So it looks like they're flying here, but can I see a BTS of this shot?
21:34Yeah.
21:35Obviously, we didn't rig a camera to a flying plane.
21:36Yeah.
21:37Maybe next time.
21:38But they're on the ground and we have this blue screen behind them to make sure we can mask in the sky.
21:43Oh, yeah. Look at that.
21:44Yeah.
21:45So we just needed to mask around the middle window and then the rest gets cut off by the VFX artists.
21:49They add some clouds and some sound effects and they get out, like, they remove the camera and the reflection.
21:54Yeah.
21:55And all of this is gone, obviously.
21:56Yeah.
21:57Yeah.
21:58Yeah.
21:59Yeah.
22:00Yeah.
22:01Yeah.
22:02Yeah.
22:03Yeah.
22:04Yeah.
22:05Yeah.
22:06Yeah.
22:07Yeah.
22:08Yeah.
22:09Yeah.
22:10And we can all get back to work.
22:12I'm not eating the chocolate.
22:13Look at that scene.
22:14This is one of my favorite shots.
22:15This is the nicest composition.
22:16Yeah.
22:17Yeah.
22:18Also, this is one of those scenes where Jimmy just, we let him loose and he just improvised.
22:21Yeah.
22:22And he...
22:23He...
22:24He spat on the...
22:26Sorry, let's just watch it.
22:27No, get that away from me.
22:28Eat it!
22:31Like him spitting...
22:32Him spitting on the hand just there.
22:33He improvised it.
22:34He improvised it.
22:35That was not in the script.
22:36It was hilarious.
22:37Yeah.
22:38The fact that we put Jimmy in this situation where he's being force fed this other chocolate
22:41and tied up.
22:42Yeah.
22:43I mean, it's just stunning.
22:44Like, the people all around, the angle of the camera, the light, and then the rope here.
22:48I mean, awesome.
22:49I don't want it.
22:50I'm not eating it.
22:51Stop.
22:52No.
22:53Drop the load.
22:54I can't see the target.
22:56Chandler, we're running out of time.
22:57Drop the load.
22:58Hold.
22:59Hold.
23:00The chocolate.
23:01Eat.
23:02Eat it, Mr. Donaldson.
23:04Eat the chocolate, Jimmy.
23:06Now!
23:17This was the part that Mr. Beast was most afraid of us pulling off.
23:20He said, when we showed him the pitch deck, he was like, I don't know how you're going
23:23to get a crate to fall through the roof, but I trust you guys.
23:26And so we built this real crate here and loaded it with Feastables chocolate milk.
23:31It was like, there's like 500 bowls that they gave us.
23:34Wow.
23:35And this is the hero of the movie, really.
23:37And so.
23:38So you built, wait, so we're looking, this is real.
23:40This is real.
23:41That's not VFX.
23:42This is real.
23:43This is a real wall behind.
23:44We've added a few more bottles, but most of those bottles falling are practical.
23:48Wow.
23:49And then we added some rubble around the sides to make it really, to sell that it fell through
23:53the roof.
23:54The lighting changed.
23:55And the CEO's right there.
23:57Squished.
23:58Oh yeah.
23:59Wow.
24:00Look at that.
24:01Yeah.
24:02But everything before was VFX.
24:03Yes.
24:04So falling from the plane, through the building, both those shots were VFX.
24:06How much those VFX shots cost?
24:08Are you working with traditional Hollywood folks?
24:11How are you making that happen?
24:12We are working with artists that are similar to us, who are doing really cool things with
24:18film and YouTube and they're just really talented at VFX.
24:21And it's crazy where you can pull off with like not much resources on this kind of thing,
24:26like in today's day and age.
24:27If you had to give a pie chart, like what percent of your budget goes to VFX?
24:30Rough.
24:31Yeah.
24:32I would say like 20%.
24:34Yeah.
24:35Wow.
24:36And what about set design?
24:37That's probably more like 40 to 50.
24:39Wow.
24:40Yeah.
24:41That's the most expensive.
24:42What are the other big costs?
24:43The crew, like just paying for all the crew to be there on four days.
24:47How many people?
24:48We had around 12 crew and then 30 extras.
24:51Wow.
24:52Huge production.
24:53Yeah.
24:57Oh!
24:58Yeah!
24:59It worked!
25:00Oh my God!
25:08Is there ever tension between you and the brand about how much you showed the product?
25:13We...
25:14Because now it's getting pretty heavy product placement, which is obviously important to
25:18you know, the brand.
25:19They're hiring you for a reason.
25:20They want to get this new product line out there.
25:22But as storytellers, filmmakers, like how do you walk that line?
25:25Yeah.
25:26This was...
25:27The...
25:28Feastables didn't ask us to do any of that.
25:30So this was just purely us.
25:31We knew that we'd make a better commercial for them if we baked it into the story.
25:37Yeah.
25:38The Feastables bottle is the hero.
25:39Because then it's not...
25:40And then we aren't trying to like, oh I don't want to add it in artificially.
25:43Yeah.
25:44And then the tension gets less.
25:46Like we actually wanted to see them drinking it.
25:49Like you can't remove...
25:50You can't have this story without the Feastables bottle.
25:52Yeah.
25:53Because it's so built into the story.
25:54Yeah.
25:55I think like product placement feels really cheap and cheesy when it's just so unneeded.
26:00Yeah.
26:01And if you take it out, the story still makes sense.
26:02Yeah.
26:03But when it's just baked into the story, we're so excited to show the product.
26:06Because it's part of the story that we wrote.
26:09Yeah.
26:10Basically the opposite of that Pepsi and Kendall Jenner ad.
26:12Oh.
26:20Alright, CO is smashed.
26:21Did you only have one shot to smash?
26:22Yes.
26:23Yes.
26:24Because it'd be hard to find that somewhere else, right?
26:26Yeah.
26:27We did that at the very end of the shoot.
26:28Got it.
26:29You're free, congrats!
26:30Now obviously, even though this is a movie...
26:32Also this shot is a big VFX shot too.
26:34Yes.
26:35I'll show you before and after.
26:36So...
26:37They weren't actually on a rooftop.
26:38They weren't actually on a rooftop.
26:39Surprise, okay.
26:40This is like a little 8x8 platform that they were climbing through a hole.
26:45And then we've redone all of everything around it.
26:48So that hole is actually just a semi-circle.
26:50We made a set extension to make it look like a bigger hole behind them.
26:53Loaded with protein and vitamins and honestly tastes better than any chocolate milk I had as a kid.
26:57But you might have noticed the workers in the movie lost all their childhood memories.
27:02Sadly, that's not just a movie plot.
27:04Today, 45% of children living in cacao growing households in West Africa are involved in illegal child labor.
27:09Meaning, they're not growing up with the childhood memories they deserve.
27:12Yeah, I love how you bring it back to basically a call to action.
27:16Yeah.
27:17Right?
27:18And you did that with Ryan Trahan and Joyride.
27:19Take me through how you thought about wrapping this up.
27:21Yeah.
27:22Obviously, this is promoting a product.
27:23But when you see how much effort was put into the movie side of it, you're way more willing to sit through the call to action and go buy the product when you feel the effort that the creator went through to make it happen.
27:34A couple things we did to keep retention is the story isn't over yet until you get to the end of the call to action.
27:40So you want to see the workers escape.
27:42So Jimmy's helping them escape while he's giving the call to action.
27:45And then at the end, our second main character, Jeff, comes out and tries the drink.
27:50And then we end.
27:51It's like a dual story until the end.
27:53Yeah.
27:54Yeah.
27:55Any other Easter eggs or stories from shooting?
27:58I mean, in many ways, it's like a tryout for your Mr. Beast movie.
28:01Exactly.
28:02Are we coming out soon?
28:03Any other stories from what seems like one of the most expensive productions that you guys have ever done?
28:08Yeah.
28:09And it's one of the most expensive shoots for a commercial for a YouTuber ever.
28:13Yeah.
28:14I think just the biggest thing for us was how busy Jimmy is.
28:18At the scale he's working at, he was doing four other videos the same week and we had him for like a couple hours a day.
28:24Yeah.
28:25So there was one time on set where he had to leave in 15 minutes and we had like 20 more shots to do.
28:31So we were just scrambling.
28:32Wow.
28:33But we got it all done and Jimmy was super helpful to make sure we got it all done as well.
28:37Yeah.
28:38Yeah.
28:39He always is.
28:40Yeah.
28:41But I think coming prepared is something that we're just like, we have to do that every time.
28:44Because if we're not prepared on set, especially with people like Jimmy, you're wasting their time.
28:48Yeah.
28:49Yeah.
28:50So like we had to come prepared with the shot list, the storyboard, the whole schedule.
28:53All the lights set up, the props set up.
28:55Yeah.
28:56And as creators, we really need to know our story back to front so that we're not wasting anyone's time.
29:00Especially when you're shooting it out of order.
29:01That's right.
29:02Like you're trying to meet his schedule and not the storyline.
29:05Yeah.
29:06Until you get in there.
29:07Yeah.
29:08Yeah.
29:09Cool.
29:10Thank you for breaking it down.
29:11Of course.
29:12Yeah.
29:13This is amazing to see.
29:14And I know it's just the beginning and there's bigger stuff coming out.
