00:00What are your reactions to not only the shooting of Charlie Kirk, but political violence that seems to be escalating every day?
00:08Horrified. I learned about it just before I went into the small business committee and mentioned during the committee that I was just devastated to see another horrible act of violence.
00:21We didn't know how serious it was at the time, and my heart goes out to the whole Kirk family.
00:30We have seen this spike in political violence. We saw it in Minnesota. We saw it in Butler, Pennsylvania.
00:38It's got to stop. It's leading the country down a very dangerous path.
00:42But I was just horrified to see what happened, and I think that shooting and Kirk's death just hangs like a pall over this entire Capitol.
00:56What can Congress do?
00:58Well, I think we've got to talk with each other about this, about what we can do, Democrats and Republicans, to try to stop this scourge,
01:10to try to come together around that very basic minimum that we need to resolve our differences by debating in there,
01:19not by using violence against a political opponent or people who have a contrary view of things.
01:29Does the rhetoric come down on both sides?
01:32There are some Republicans who are already placing the blame on Democratic rhetoric.
01:36You know, I think at this point, we just should grieve what's happened today for the whole country before we start asserting blame.
01:48And I just want to say how appalled I am at this tragedy and enjoying the call for an end to this madness.
01:59Senator Schultz, do you feel safe?
02:03I think all of us have to recognize that it's a very dangerous time in the country for anyone involved in this crisis.
02:09And that is a tragedy in itself.
