00:05Political influencer Charlie Kirk was shot in an event at the Utah Valley University.
00:11He was taken by a private vehicle to Timpanogos Hospital, where he later passed.
00:18The Utah Department of Public Safety will be co-leading this criminal investigation to find this killer,
00:24along with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
00:25Shortly after the shooting, we did have a suspect in custody, George Zinn,
00:31but he was released from custody after we identified that he did not match the shooting suspect
00:36and was not an accurate person of interest.
00:40However, he has been booked into the county jail by Utah Valley University Police Department for obstruction of justice.
00:49We do still have an active investigation for the person of interest.
00:55This incident occurred with a large crowd around.
00:59There was one shot fired and one victim.
01:03While the suspect is at large, we believe this was a targeted attack towards one individual.
01:08The only information we have on the suspect, the possible shooter, is taken from closed-circuit TV here on campus.
01:16We do have that.
01:17We're analyzing it, but it is security camera footage, so you can kind of guess what the quality of that is.
01:24But we do know dressed in all dark clothing, but we don't have a much better description other than that.

01:40Potentially from a roof, yes.
01:42A longer distance shot from a roof.
01:44As soon as we heard about the shooting, special agents and personnel from the Salt Lake Field Office responded immediately.
01:53We have full resources devoted to this investigation, including tactical, operational, investigative, and intelligence.
02:00To be clear, the FBI will fully support and co-lead this investigation alongside with our partners.
02:08I know there's a lot of questions.
02:11This is very much an active case, and this investigation is in its early stages.
02:15We are following all the leads and all the evidence.
02:18He was invited by the student group Turning Point USA to speak on our campus.
02:23We firmly believe that UVU is a place to share ideas and to debate openly and respectfully.
02:31Any attempt to infringe on those rights has no place here.
02:34We do not condone any form of violence at UVU and seek to make our campus a safe place for all.
02:42I've been in touch with President Trump, with FBI Director Cash Patel.
02:47We are completely aligned with our state and federal partners as we work through this case.
02:56Now, this is a dark day for our state.
03:01It's a tragic day for our nation.
03:04I want to be very clear that this is a political assassination.
03:08Charlie Kirk was first and foremost a husband and a dad to two young children.
03:23He was also very much politically involved, and that's why he was here on campus.
03:31Charlie believed in the power of free speech and debate to shape ideas and to persuade people.
03:45Historically, our university campuses in this nation and here in the state of Utah have been the place where truth and ideas are formulated and debated.
03:56And that's what he does.
03:58He comes on college campuses and he debates.
04:01Now, we have a person of interest in custody.
04:06The investigation is ongoing.
04:10But I want to make it crystal clear right now.
04:14To whoever did this, we will find you.
04:18We will try you.
04:21And we will hold you accountable to the furthest extent of the law.
04:25And I just want to remind people that we still have the death penalty here in the state of Utah.
04:31Our nation is broken.
04:35We've had political assassinations recently in Minnesota.
04:43We had an attempted assassination on the governor of Pennsylvania.
04:48And we had an attempted assassination on a presidential candidate and former president of the United States and now current president of the United States.
05:01Nothing I say can unite us as a country.
05:06Nothing I can say right now can fix what is broken.
05:11Nothing I can say can bring back Charlie Kirk.
05:14We mourn with his wife, his children, his family, his friends.
05:24We mourn as a nation.
05:25If anyone in the sound of my voice celebrated even a little bit at the news of this shooting,
05:36I would beg you to look in the mirror
05:41and to see if you can find a better angel in there somewhere.
05:48I don't care what his politics are.
05:50I care that he was an American.
05:52We have a person of interest in custody that is being interviewed right now.
