00:00Welcome to the Dreamed Novel channel before starting to listen to the fun in this clip.
00:13Don't forget to like and comment. So that the admin will have the encouragement to continue
00:18making clips. Let's go listen. Hogwarts. I am such a model wizard.
00:25Chapter 476, the scene is too beautiful, they can't do this. Ron grumbled as they made their
00:33way to the doors after the feast. I'll be 15 in March, why can't I give it a go? Yeah.
00:41Harry added wistfully. He'd love the chance to compete too, but his birthday was in July,
00:47even later than Ron's. Hermione, on the other hand, kept her head down, saying nothing.
00:53There's nothing you can do, Ron, said Fred, appearing suddenly behind them with a wide
00:59grin. It's a rule set by the school and the ministry, and you've got to follow it.
01:05Yep, be a good spectator, said George, popping up on the other side. Just remember to cheer us on.
01:12Huh. Ron scoffed, rolling his eyes. Fred and George claiming they had to obey rules was the
01:20funniest thing he'd heard all year. Why are you two allowed to sign up? Ron asked sourly.
01:27Fred gave him an incredulous look. I always thought you were slow, but I didn't know you
01:32were this thick. We're allowed to sign up because we're old enough. 16, which is a year older than
01:39the minimum, George added. You haven't forgotten our ages, have you? That'd just break our hearts.
01:47I haven't forgotten, Ron snapped. I just don't think it's fair. That's a thousand galleons.
01:55You'd still have to win first, Fred pointed out. Got any O's in transfiguration or charms?
02:02Ron's cheeks turned a bit pink, but he jutted his chin out stubbornly.
02:06The Triwizard Tournament isn't an exam, it's not about grades. Maybe I could just win by luck.
02:14George let out a loud laugh. Oh, if only. But sadly, you're too young for that stroke of luck,
02:21Mr. Future Champion. Fred and George left him behind, chatting loudly about how they'd be the
02:27first to sign up. Ron, meanwhile, continued to sulk, muttering that it was unfair and that everyone
02:34should be allowed to participate. But you heard Dumbledore say that a lot of people have died in
02:39the tournament, Hermione whispered as they stepped outside the foyer. That's why it was suspended for
02:45a century. Yeah, yeah, Ron replied dismissively, but that was ages ago, right? And Dumbledore also said
02:53they'd worked hard to make sure no one's life would be at risk this time. So if it's safe for 15-year-olds,
03:00then why not us? Hermione, surprisingly, didn't argue. She remained silent, her head down as she
03:08continued to think, clearly preoccupied with something else entirely. Ha ha ha. Hermione
03:14suddenly heard laughter coming from the Hufflepuff group nearby. Mikkel was waving his hands animatedly.
03:21Who do you think will be Hogwarts champion? Kyle or Cedric? It'll be Kyle, he's practically filled the
03:29trophy room with special awards for services to the school, someone chimed in. No, it's got to be
03:35Cedric, a sixth year shook his head. He's in his sixth year, so he's got the age advantage. But Kyle
03:43has an order of Merlin, second class. Another voice pointed out. Ho ho. A different voice cut through
03:51their conversation with a mocking tone. I think the Hogwarts champion should come from Ravenclaw,
03:57of course, said Roger Davies, stepping forward with a smirk. After all, we're the smartest students
04:04at Hogwarts, not you, mediocre Hufflepuffs. The lively discussion came to an abrupt halt,
04:10as if someone had doused it with cold water. While people once thought Hufflepuff represented
04:15mediocrity, the house's recent winning streak in the Quidditch Cup and House Cup had mostly put that
04:20stereotype to rest. Few voiced such opinions openly anymore, though some might still think it
04:26privately. Mikel looked at Davies with a raised eyebrow. Oh, I thought it was someone else.
04:34Isn't this Davies? He shrugged and added, I won't deny that most Ravenclaws are intelligent,
04:40but I just have one question for you. Have any of you ranked first in your year for five consecutive
04:46years, like Cedric? Or scored full marks and won three special awards for services to the school?
04:53No. Just one would do. At this, laughter rippled through the crowd, and Roger Davies' face turned
05:01red. Well. Rob was top of his year in seventh year. A few nearby Ravenclaws nodded in agreement,
05:09backing him up, suggesting that Rob would be a better choice for the Hogwarts champion.
05:15They were clearly eager to see a Ravenclaw in the spotlight, viewing the Triwizard Tournament as an
05:20opportunity to finally best the Hufflepuffs. If Rob could secure the position and stand out as
05:25Hogwarts champion, it would prove to them that Ravenclaw was superior. Oh, I thought you were
05:31going to say yourself, Davies. You're over 15, aren't you? Ryan laughed. Come on, don't deny it,
05:40you want to be a champion too. Unfortunately, maybe if you'd won the Quidditch Cup even once,
05:46you'd have something to show by now. Davies, speechless and even redder in the face,
05:52looked as though he wanted to retort but couldn't find the words. Finally, he spat out,
05:57we'll see who becomes champion in the end, before spinning around and storming up the stairs.
06:03In his hurry, though, he forgot about a tricky step halfway up and tripped,
06:08sinking right into it. Laughter erupted again around him, even from the nearby armor,
06:13which clanked and creaked as if it, too, found the scene hilarious.
06:18Shut up, hissed a few Ravenclaw students, who rushed forward to pull Davies out and usher him
06:23quickly up the stairs. Meanwhile, in the Hufflepuff common room, Kyle, who had escorted the first
06:29years back early, was still pondering why the age requirement for the Triwizard Tournament had
06:34been lowered so significantly. It took Cedric calling his name three times to snap him out of his thoughts.
06:41Sorry, Kyle said, turning to the freshmen and instructing them to head to their dormitories
06:46on their own. Then he looked back at Cedric. I was a bit distracted, what did you say?
06:53I asked if you're planning to enter the Triwizard Tournament, Cedric repeated.
06:58Oh, definitely, Kyle replied. Even though he couldn't quite figure out the reason behind the
07:04age change, he saw no reason to pass up such an opportunity, especially given something else in
07:10the tournament that intrigued him. He glanced over at Cedric. You're entering, too, I take it.
07:17Of course, Cedric said, grinning. I feel like I stand a good chance. Honestly, it's a bit mean to
07:25say, but I don't think I have that much competition. Ravenclaw's Rob, you, Kanna, Cho, and that's about it.
07:33Kyle smirked. Fred and George won't be too pleased if they hear you're not counting them as competitors.
07:39Oh, I haven't forgotten them, Cedric replied, trying to hold back a laugh. But, well, it's hard to
07:47picture the Hogwarts champion setting off dumb bombs during the Triwizard Tournament.
07:52That would be quite a sight, Kyle chuckled. And I don't think Professor McGonagall would
07:57survive the shock. Hogwarts. I am such a model wizard.
08:03Chapter 477, Defense Against the Dark Arts
08:07The next morning, the storm that had raged on since their arrival finally cleared.
08:12Kyle and Kanna headed to the Great Hall for breakfast and to review their new schedules.
08:17Hey, look. We don't have potions for a few days.
08:22Mikkel exclaimed, as if he'd stumbled on the best news of the year.
08:26Neither do we, Cedric added, spreading out his timetable.
08:30Hmm, my first potions lesson isn't scheduled until next Wednesday.
08:36Same for us.
08:38Hannah chimed in. We don't have potions until next Friday.
08:42Cedric stood up in confusion and walked down the long Hufflepuff table, comparing schedules with other
08:48students. To his surprise, he discovered that not a single year group had potions this week,
08:53his was the earliest, and that was still a full eight days away.
08:58This seemed strange for all seven years, Cedric mused.
09:02He turned to Kanna and lowered his voice.
09:05Do you know anything about this?
09:08Is Professor Snape, not at school?
09:11He has other matters to attend to and might not be able to teach for a few days, Kanna replied.
09:17Not long after the holidays started, Professor Dumbledore came to see him.
09:22Since then, he's hardly left his home, and he hasn't allowed me in, so I don't really know what's going on.
09:28She glanced briefly at Kyle, who was quietly sipping his pumpkin juice.
09:33She had a feeling he might know something about Dumbledore's visit to Snape,
09:37especially since Kyle had seemed unusually well-informed during the Quidditch World Cup,
09:42particularly when it came to the house-elf, creature.
09:45But Kyle simply continued eating in silence, so Kanna left it alone.
09:49As for the other students, the idea of having a week off from potions was enough to keep them satisfied,
09:56and no one seemed too bothered about Snape's absence.
10:00Mikkel happily raised his pumpkin juice like it was champagne, reveling in the unexpected reprieve.
10:06Just then, a flurry of wings filled the hall as hundreds of owls swooped through the open windows,
10:11delivering the morning mail.
10:12A brown owl dropped the Daily Prophet in front of Kyle, who poured it some cornflakes before unfolding the newspaper.
10:20The front page was once again focused on the aftermath of the Quidditch World Cup.
10:26Former Ministry of Magic employee Yaxley sentenced to Azkaban for use of unforgivable curses.
10:32The article included several photos from the trial.
10:34In one, Yaxley appeared wild-eyed and disheveled, his perfectly combed hair now sticking up like a neglected school broom.
10:43Another showed him being dragged away by horrors.
10:46Ha!
10:47I knew it, they weren't getting away with that, Cedric said from beside him.
10:52I heard Bill mention that someone cast two cruciatus curses on Mr. Weasley.
10:57It had to be him.
10:59Yeah, no doubt, Kyle agreed, folding up the newspaper and glancing across the hall toward the Slytherin table.
11:07Malfoy sat there, his face paler than usual, reading the Daily Prophet with a grim expression.
11:13Crabbe and Goyle, normally focused only on their breakfast, were similarly fixated on the newspaper, barely touching their food.
11:21After breakfast, the group left the Great Hall and headed to their first class.
11:25Defense Against the Dark Arts.
11:29Kanna mused.
11:31I wonder what Professor Moody is like.
11:34He can't be that bad, Cedric said as they walked.
11:38Professor Moody's a legendary orr.
11:40They say he put half of Azkaban's inmates behind bars.
11:44A man like that has to have real skills.
11:47I hope so, said Mikkel doubtfully.
11:50After Lockhart, he wasn't putting too much faith in anyone's reputation.
11:55He figured they'd see soon enough in the classroom.
11:59Cedric parted ways on the third floor, heading to Transfiguration, while Kyle and the others continued to the defense against the Dark Arts classroom.
12:08Though class hadn't started yet, a good number of students had already arrived, eager to see what Professor Moody had in store.
12:14Kyle found an empty row of seats at the back, and they took out their copies of the Dark Forces, a guide to self-protection while they waited.
12:23Soon, they heard the unmistakable stomping footsteps approaching from the hallway.
12:28The chattering immediately died down, and the room went silent.
12:32Before the bell even rang, Professor Moody strode into the room, his electric blue magical eye swiveling around in every direction.
12:40He looked as intimidating as he had the night before.
12:44Put away your books, he said in his gruff voice.
12:48I went through them last night, and there's nothing in there you'll need.
12:51They're fine for younger years, but not for you.
12:55Everyone quickly stashed their books, some clearly thrilled.
12:59They'd learn from experience that when a professor ditched the textbook on the first day, the course usually turned out to be intense and interesting, like Lupin's lessons the previous year.
13:10Moody walked to the front, took out a roll call sheet, and began taking attendance.
13:14His normal eye scanned the list while his magical eye whirled around, scrutinizing each student as they responded.
13:22Alright, he said when the last student had answered.
13:26Before I arrived, I got a letter from Professor Lupin explaining the status of this course.
13:31Moody's lips twisted in a frown.
13:34I don't mean to disparage him, but I don't see why Lupin wasted a year teaching you about dark creatures.
13:40That's second year material, if you ask me.
13:43After all, dark wizards don't carry around dangerous animals.
13:48They have wands.
13:50Kyle rolled his eyes, muttering to himself, not everyone needs a wand.
13:55Tell that to Newt Scamander's face.
13:58Oblivious, Moody continued, now that I'm here, it's my duty to prepare you for what happens when wizards turn their spells on each other.
14:06So, let's talk about dark magic.
14:10Specifically, curses.
14:11Everyone immediately sat up, intrigued.
14:16Most of them had had their fill of lectures on dark creatures and were more than ready for something new.
14:21Let's get started, then, Moody said with a dry chuckle.
14:25Spells come in many forms, varying in power.
14:29Some are legal, others, like curses, are not.
14:33These we call dark magic.
14:35Can anyone name a curse?
14:38A Gryffindor raised his hand.
14:41The Cruciatus curse.
14:43Ah, yes, Moody said, his voice dropping to a dangerous tone.
14:48The unforgivable curses, the most evil curses of all.
14:52Use one of these on another wizard, and you're looking at life in Azkaban.
14:56Moody flashed a menacing grin.
14:59I imagine some of you read about this curse in the paper this morning.
15:03The student nodded, wide-eyed.
15:06Precisely, Moody sneered.
15:09That idiot claimed he was under the imperious curse.
15:12Such a weak excuse, I wouldn't even have to be there to know he was lying.
15:17And speaking of which, the imperious curse is another unforgivable curse.
15:22He turned to a Gryffindor girl.
15:25Miss Marianne, I imagine you've studied this.
15:29Can you tell us the name of the third unforgivable curse?
15:32Hogwarts.
15:34I am such a model wizard.
15:36Chapter 478, The Shield Charm Marianne, who had been fiddling with a new hair clip,
15:42was startled by Moody's sudden question.
15:45She looked up to find his unsettling magical eye fixed on her, as if it had been watching
15:49her for some time.
15:51She stood up, trembling slightly, her face flushed.
15:55I've heard of it.
15:57I think it's the killing curse.
15:59Very good.
16:01Sit down.
16:02But next time, keep that little trinket away during class, Moody replied, his normal eye
16:08turning back to the class while his magical eye lingered on her.
16:11Yes, the killing curse, Avada Kedavra, the most feared of curses.
16:17But that's a lesson for six years and above.
16:20We'll focus on other curses for now.
16:23Moody's gaze swept across the room again.
16:26Now, does anyone know of any more common dark magic?
16:30Several hands shot up.
16:33He nodded at Kanna.
16:34Air, there's the corrosion curse, she said, her voice a bit hesitant.
16:40Ah, yes.
16:42Standard dark magic, Moody confirmed, nodding approvingly.
16:47Corrodes flesh and bone, a favorite of dark wizards everywhere.
16:51He drew his wand and gave a quick flick toward the lectern.
16:54Instantly, a purplish sludge oozed across its surface, causing the wood to bubble and melt
17:00as if it were being poured over with acid.
17:03Students in the front row leaned back, looking apprehensive.
17:07Another wave of Moody's wand restored the lectern to normal.
17:11Anyone else?
17:12Any other curses?
17:14Moody asked.
17:16More hands went up, and he pointed to a student at random.
17:20Porn-growing hex, the student offered.
17:24Barely dark magic, Moody replied.
17:27It's more of a restrictive jinx and technically not illegal if it doesn't cause harm.
17:32I know one, professor, another student called out.
17:36Fiendfire curse.
17:38A solid choice.
17:40Nasty stuff, Moody said with a nod.
17:43Swelling head jinx.
17:46Very good.
17:46The classroom buzzed with excitement as Moody encouraged more contributions.
17:52The students seemed to forget their initial fear of his scarred face, eagerly raising their
17:56hands to show off their knowledge of dark spells and curses.
18:00However, some of these students really knew the answer, some had heard it from others,
18:05and some just made up a spell on the spot, but Moody saw through them immediately.
18:10When he sensed the timing was right, Professor Moody clapped his hands to signal everyone to
18:15put theirs down.
18:17All right, back to business, he said.
18:20These dark magics, without exception, can cause serious trouble.
18:24By rights, I should be teaching you a variety of counterspells now, as both the Ministry of
18:30Magic and your textbooks recommend.
18:32But I disagree.
18:34In my view, the best counterspell is to stop your enemy's dark magic from hitting you in
18:39the first place.
18:41So, for this first lesson, I've decided to teach you the simplest and most practical defensive
18:46charm.
18:47He turned to the blackboard and began writing with a flourish, but everyone knew that his
18:51magical eye was undoubtedly keeping an eye on them through the back of his head.
18:56No one dared to whisper, they all sat up straight.
19:00Soon, Moody finished writing and turned around, pointing at the board.
19:03The shield charm, the most effective defensive charm, he said.
19:09A wizard proficient in the shield charm can fend off 90% of dark magic.
19:14It's also a basic requirement for anyone wanting to become an Auror.
19:18If any of you are thinking about becoming an Auror after graduation, remember this, only those
19:24who master the shield charm are even allowed to sit for the Auror exams.
19:28Otherwise, regardless of how many qualifications you have, you'll be turned away.
19:34Some students immediately took out their quills and began to take notes seriously.
19:39Professor.
19:41One student raised their hand and asked, can the shield charm block the killing curse?
19:46Moody's magical eye rotated to lock onto the student.
19:50In theory only, he replied.
19:52But the killing curse is unique.
19:55It's not just magic, it carries the malice within a person's heart, that's what gives it
20:00its true power.
20:02And this malice is far more terrifying than raw magical force.
20:06To block the killing curse with the shield charm often requires many times the magical
20:11power of the attacker.
20:13The gap in power is like you trying to use the killing curse against me.
20:17To be blunt, that wouldn't just be pointless, it'd be downright foolish, because you never
20:22know if your opponent is as weak as they appear.
20:24So, when facing the killing curse, the best response is to avoid it, not to resist it.
20:31The sound of quills scratching against parchment filled the room.
20:35Although this information was typically taught only to advanced students, Moody didn't stop
20:40anyone from taking notes, instead, he waited quietly.
20:44When they had all finished, he waved his wand, and lines of small, glowing text appeared on
20:49the blackboard along with a diagram of wand gestures.
20:53The lines pulsed with energy, showing the precise motions required for casting the shield charm,
20:59including the directions and angles of wand movements.
21:02This is your homework, Moody said.
21:05It's also my summary of shield charm techniques.
21:09I expect you to write it all down.
21:11We'll do practical exercises next lesson, and if anyone's theory is lacking.
21:15He grinned, his scars twisting, making him look even more menacing.
21:21Trust me, you'll regret it.
21:24Of course, I know some of you won't bother, but that's fine.
21:28I'll just inform the hospital wing to have a few beds ready in advance.
21:33Silence fell over the classroom.
21:35For the remainder of the lesson, everyone was too busy copying down the notes from the
21:39blackboard to utter a single word, right up until the bell rang.
21:43Moody limped out of the classroom, the clunk of his wooden leg growing fainter and fainter
21:48until it vanished.
21:50The moment he was gone, chatter erupted from every corner.
21:54Aside from a few students who looked worried, most were thrilled and could hardly wait for
21:58Friday, the only day they'd have their second defense against the dark arts lesson.
22:04He's amazing, isn't he, said Mikkel as he left the classroom, glancing at his parchment
22:09covered in notes.
22:11He knows all kinds of dark magic inside and out.
22:14I made up a spell so convincingly, but he saw through it.
22:18Not everyone can be a fraud like that Lockhart.
22:22Kyle looked at him for a moment, debating whether to tell Mikkel that the spell he had invented
22:26already existed, it was actually called the Vanishing Spell.
22:30After all, making objects disappear on contact is exactly what the Vanishing Spell does.
22:36Just as the Transfiguration Spell can't conjure food, the Vanishing Spell doesn't work on anything
22:42living.
22:43It wouldn't have taken Moody to spot that, any wizard with a hint of sense would know that
22:47spell was made up.
22:49Otherwise, the Killing Curse would have been dropped down to second place on the list ages
22:53ago.
22:54After all, in terms of sheer practicality, it's a rather inefficient spell.
23:00Hogwarts.
23:01I am such a model wizard.
23:04Chapter 479, True Vanishing Spell During Lunch, Cedric Everly asked how Professor Moody
23:10lesson had gone.
23:12It was fantastic.
23:14Mikkel couldn't wait to chime in.
23:16I have a feeling defense against the dark arts will be way better this year than it was
23:20before.
23:22Even Lupin.
23:22Of course, I don't mean Professor Lupin wasn't good, but compared to learning spells, dealing
23:29with dark creatures was a bit dull.
23:31Oh.
23:32I can't wait to see for myself.
23:35Cedric said, feeling an itch of excitement at Mikkel's description.
23:40But no, he reminded himself, they wouldn't have defense against the dark arts until Friday,
23:45and now he had to head out for Herbology.
23:47Cedric hurried off downstairs, and Kyle walked into their next classroom to get their textbooks
23:53organized.
23:55When class began, Professor McGonagall arrived promptly.
23:59Rather than starting the lesson, she spent the first 15 minutes stressing the importance
24:04of the OWL exams.
24:05You must understand that this exam can shape your future for years to come, she declared,
24:12her expression stern as she stood at the front of the class.
24:15But I have every confidence that each of you is capable of achieving an OWL.
24:20In transfiguration, provided you dedicate the time and effort required.
24:24First emphasizing the importance of the exam, then affirming the students' abilities.
24:30Hmm, very typical of Professor McGonagall.
24:34After 15 minutes, she finally stopped and picked up her textbook.
24:39Today's lesson is critical, and I expect you all to give it your undivided attention.
24:44We're going to learn the most challenging spell on the OWL exam, the vanishing spell.
24:49She demonstrated it for the class, successfully making a snail disappear from the lectern.
24:56Aha!
24:57Before Professor McGonagall could continue, Mikel let out a strange laugh, sounding as though
25:02he'd accidentally taken the wrong potion and was overly excited.
25:07Mr. Derek.
25:08Professor McGonagall's voice cut sharply.
25:12If you find something amusing about this lesson.
25:15Sorry, Professor McGonagall, I apologize.
25:18Mikel said quickly, though he couldn't completely hide the triumphant look on his face.
25:24It's just, in the last class, Professor Moody asked us to name dark magic spells, and I said
25:30vanishing spell, but he told me there was no such magic, which, obviously, was wrong, wasn't
25:36it?
25:37For once, Mikel felt ecstatic, thinking he'd managed to outsmart a professor, and a famous
25:43one at that.
25:43Professor McGonagall seemed slightly puzzled, so she leaned down and asked Kyle, who was
25:49sitting nearby, to explain what had happened in Moody's class.
25:54After listening, she stood back up and looked at Mikel.
25:57I'm afraid Professor Moody was right, Mr. Derek.
26:01The vanishing spell is not classified as dark magic.
26:05What?
26:06Mikel blurted out, clearly taken aback.
26:10But the snail just now.
26:12Before he could finish, Professor McGonagall waved her wand again, and the snail reappeared
26:17on the lectern as if it had never vanished.
26:20First, you need to understand why the vanishing spell is part of transfiguration, Professor
26:25McGonagall explained.
26:27It doesn't make objects disappear in the same way as this spell you mentioned, for instance.
26:33Instead, it transforms the object into a state of nothingness, which you might also think
26:38of as an invisible ghost or air.
26:41But the object itself still exists, and as long as you know the correct counterspell,
26:46such as the reversal spell or the untransfiguration spell, it can be brought back.
26:51Huh?
26:52Mikel stood there, stunned, his mouth agape.
26:55All right, sit down, said Professor McGonagall, motioning for him to take his seat.
27:02I won't deduct points this time, but next time, I hope you'll be more diligent and look
27:07into the proper definition of dark magic.
27:10And remember, that's your job to research in your own time, not during transfiguration
27:14class.
27:16With that, she handed each student a snail to use for practice.
27:21Kyle looked at the snail on his desk, feeling thoughtful.
27:23Recently, his focus had been on interspecies transformations and complex transformations.
27:30With everything that had happened over the holidays, he hadn't thought much about the
27:34vanishing spell in transfiguration.
27:37Everyone began attempting the spell, and Kyle picked up his wand, pointing it at the snail
27:42as Professor McGonagall had demonstrated.
27:44However, instead of disappearing, the snail changed from its original taupe color to an
27:50off-white.
27:51Only after waving his wand again did he manage to make the snail vanish with an Evanesco.
27:56It took him two tries to get it right, and Kyle realized that the vanishing spell was almost
28:02as challenging as performing a fifth-level transformation.
28:04Professor McGonagall, who had been observing nearby since the students began practicing,
28:10couldn't help but nod approvingly after seeing Kyle's progress.
28:14Very good, someone has already finished, she called out, drawing everyone's attention.
28:20As a reward, ten points to Hufflepuff.
28:23The class showed little surprise.
28:26When they heard it was Hufflepuff and saw Kyle standing beside her, they just went back
28:30to their own work as though it were a routine occurrence.
28:34After all, Kyle's classmates had grown accustomed to this over the past five years.
28:39Professor McGonagall didn't linger on the announcement and was about to move on to check
28:43on the others when Kyle suddenly called out,
28:46Professor McGonagall, I have a question.
28:49Oh, she turned back, raising an eyebrow.
28:53Kyle hesitated briefly before asking, can the vanishing spell be used on oneself?
28:57Ever since Professor McGonagall had explained the principle behind the vanishing spell,
29:03he had been considering the implications.
29:06The spell essentially transformed objects into a state of nothingness without fully erasing
29:11their existence, a concept tantalizingly close to true intangibility.
29:15If one could use the vanishing spell on themselves, they could theoretically move about unseen and
29:20undetected, almost invincible, untouchable by curses, fiendfire, and many forms of detection.
29:26It would be an incredible feat Professor McGonagall's eyes glinted with interest as she looked at him.
29:33When I first encountered the vanishing spell, I had the same thoughts, she admitted.
29:38In theory, it is possible, but it's an incredibly difficult task.
29:43Far more difficult than you might think.
29:46Even I cannot do it.
29:48You can't either.
29:50Kyle frowned.
29:51Is it really that hard?
29:53The difficulty of the vanishing spell increases with the complexity of the object being vanished,
29:59Professor McGonagall explained quietly.
30:02Snails and caterpillars are among the simplest forms, yet most students require a long time
30:07to master the spell even at that level.
30:10Many won't be able to vanish a creature as complex as a mouse until around Christmas, or
30:15even Easter.
30:16By seventh year, students who can vanish an iguana will easily pass their NEWTS in transfiguration.
30:23She paused, studying Kyle's expression.
30:27And there's more to it.
30:29A wizard's own magical power plays a considerable role in performing the vanishing spell on oneself.
30:35The stronger the wizard, the greater the resistance the spell faces.
30:39Our bodies instinctively reject such a transformation on a deeply subconscious level, making it nearly
30:45impossible to control.
30:47So, does that mean it's outright impossible for a wizard to vanish themselves?
30:53Kyle asked, frowning.
30:55Humans are far more complex than iguanas, he reasoned.
30:59Attempting the vanishing spell on oneself would require a staggering foundation of magical power.
31:04But paradoxically, the more power one has, the more resistance they would encounter, a self-defeating
31:11cycle.
31:12No, it's not entirely impossible, Professor McGonagall said with a small smile.
31:18I just haven't succeeded yet myself.
31:21But.
31:22I would be thrilled to see you accomplish it one day.
31:26Hogwarts.
31:27I am such a model wizard.
31:29Chapter 480, a novel experience Kyle and Professor McGonagall's exchange was overheard by many
31:36students.
31:37Yet for those still struggling to vanish a simple snail, the conversation might as well
31:42have been in another language.
31:44They weren't equipped to join in such a high-level discussion, and they couldn't understand it
31:48anyway, so they focused on their battles with the snails in front of them.
31:52The two transfiguration classes flew by, and by the end, only Kyle and Kanna had completed
31:59the task.
32:00As a reward, Professor McGonagall gave both of them a ten-point boost for their house and
32:05excused them from homework.
32:07Only those two were spared from the task, everyone else had to practice the vanishing spell overnight
32:12and turn in a five-foot essay by the following afternoon.
32:16The classroom erupted in groans of protest.
32:18For most, this was a staggering load.
32:23Many were only just realizing the true intensity of fifth-year coursework.
32:27Last year, assignments had been three feet long at most, and now they were facing five-foot
32:32essays, nearly double the workload.
32:35Mikkel and Ryan, in particular, looked crestfallen.
32:40It wasn't just the amount of work, it was that Kyle didn't have to do it, which meant they'd
32:44lost their best reference for the assignment.
32:46Later in the afternoon, they had two back-to-back charms lessons.
32:52Like Professor McGonagall, Professor Flitik began with a serious reminder of the importance
32:57of the fifth-year exams, telling them that they'd need to work harder than ever to meet
33:01their potential.
33:02When the lesson ended, the students watched him anxiously, half-dreading what was to come.
33:08Professor Flitik didn't disappoint, assigning a sizable load of homework.
33:12Thankfully, since the next charms class was the very next morning, the assignment was
33:17shorter, just three feet.
33:20But this still didn't lift the spirits of the weary students.
33:23By dinner that evening, the fifth years were notably quiet.
33:28Even Mikkel, usually the life of the table, ate without a word, quickly finishing his meal
33:33and then dashing off to the library.
33:36With a total of eight feet of homework to get through, no one could afford to waste time.
33:41Cedric observed their silent determination with a knowing expression.
33:45Having gone through it all himself, he recognized the struggle.
33:49But, like Kyle, he had often found himself exempt from extra assignments, lightening his workload.
33:55And this was only the first day.
33:59In the days that followed, the fifth-year students came to fully grasp the realities of their OWL year.
34:05Ten feet of homework each day became the norm, alongside a constant stream of spells and charms
34:11they had to master.
34:12Even divination, which was supposed to be light, turned into a chore when Professor Trelawney required
34:18them to record their dreams and make detailed prophecies from the dream oracle, at least three times
34:23a week. Their time in the library grew with each passing day, and their favorite games of wizard
34:28chess and exploding snap were left untouched. Once, Kyle heard one of the chess pieces in the
34:34common room muttering angrily from the corner, complaining about the dust that had gathered
34:38from lack of use. In fact, so many students were recording dreams about assignments in the
34:44library that nearly half of their divination work started to sound strikingly similar.
34:48While his classmates toiled, Kyle appeared almost relaxed.
34:54With so many homework exemptions, he actually visited the library less and less, Conned did
34:59the same. In the common room, they were the only two fifth-years who could afford a quick
35:04round of exploding snap, and many students looked on with thinly veiled envy.
35:09One Saturday, Kyle awoke to an empty dormitory.
35:13Mikel and Ryan had left early to work in the library, leaving only their made-up beds behind.
35:19He couldn't believe he was the last to wake up, and for a brief moment, he felt a twinge
35:24of guilt. Leaving the dormitory, he saw Kana already waiting for him in the common room,
35:30seated in an armchair with a high stack of exploding snap cards ready on the table.
35:35After breakfast in the great hall, the two of them headed up to the room of requirement on
35:39the eighth floor together. Are you ready? Kyle asked, opening the suitcase.
35:46I've been ready for ages, Kana replied, and without hesitation, she jumped into the suitcase.
35:53The room inside was familiar, but this time, it felt different. With Kyle by her side,
35:59she didn't have to worry about running into any dragons unprepared. The space wasn't large,
36:05and she'd seen most of it last time, so her gaze went straight to the door.
36:10Follow me. Kyle said, reading her thoughts, and led the way.
36:15In the next instant, Kana froze, stunned. She'd expected that any place housing a dragon would
36:21be spacious, but she hadn't anticipated that the room would be this enormous.
36:25She stood on tiptoe, but still couldn't see the end of the space.
36:30You didn't bring the Forbidden Forest in here, did you? she asked, half-jokingly.
36:36No, no. Kyle shook his head. It's a bit smaller than the Forbidden Forest, maybe half the size.
36:45As he spoke, he extended an arm to grab the Niffler, who was attempting to snatch something
36:50from his pocket, and casually tossed the little creature back into the bushes. But Kana was too
36:56captivated by the landscape before her to notice. To her surprise, the room contained several
37:02distinct climates. Directly ahead was a lush forest, but next to it stretched an endless desert,
37:08and across from that, a snowy landscape with fresh snow falling. Each zone was separated from
37:14the others by narrow paths, like distinct sections of a wizard's chessboard. Just then, a shadow passed
37:21overhead, casting the two of them into sudden shade. Kana looked up and gasped, a massive dragon,
37:28several dozen feet long, was swooping down from the sky, landing gracefully in front of them.
37:34It was Norbert, the same dragon that had scared Ron senseless earlier. Kana felt a jolt of instinctive
37:40fear, but Norbert didn't even glance at her. Instead, the dragon lowered his massive head,
37:46roughly the size of a small table, towards Kyle in a familiar, almost affectionate gesture.
37:53Kyle braced himself, but even so, he was still knocked back several meters from the impact.
37:59Oh dear! He muttered, rubbing his chest, as Kana struggled to hold back her laughter.
38:04I've warned him about this, but he never listens. You'll want to be careful when you're here on
38:11your own, it's no fun getting hit by him. Kana laughed, a mix of nervousness and amusement,
38:17eyeing the enormous creature with lingering apprehension. She made a mental note that she'd
38:22never venture here alone without Kyle. Is this really a dragon, she couldn't help but ask.
38:28What else would it be? Kyle replied with a grin, patting Norbert on the head.
38:35It's certainly not a tabby cat. Well, if it could shapeshift, maybe, Kana mused to herself.
38:42After all, who would expect a dragon to be this, friendly? Kyle noticed her hesitant curiosity and
38:49smiled. Do you want to pet him? Can I? Kana's eyes lit up. She'd never had the chance to touch a
38:57dragon before. Of course, go ahead, don't worry. Encouraged by Kyle's reassurance, Kana took a deep
39:06breath and reached out, gently placing her hand on Norbert's side. The dragon's scales were rougher
39:12than she'd imagined, and pleasantly warm, like a wall next to a roaring fireplace. Kyle then led her
39:18around to Norbert's back. Climbing on, Kana's face broke into a wide smile. The sensation was
39:26completely new to her, exhilarating and a little surreal. Norbert, however, was less pleased. He
39:33snorted, releasing a small puff of flames, and though he remained still with Kyle there, he expressed his
39:39displeasure by swishing his tail, thudding it against the ground with a loud, rhythmic bang.
