00:00The United Nations decided to make 1975 an International Women's Year.
00:09The Icelandic government planned this conference late in June
00:15and that was the turning point.
00:18That conference was the first time women from all classes, all ages, all the political parties came together.
00:26Women's clubs from all over the country, the women from the trade unions, the women's rights association and the red stockings.
00:39There were about 300 women there.
00:43Some of us started thinking how can we tell everybody in Iceland that if women don't work everything collapses.
00:52The fishery industry, the hospitals, the schools, everything will collapse.
01:03And then we made this proposal.
01:07It was just handed on a small piece of paper.
01:10Different kinds of women signing it.
01:13There we said in order to show women's contribution to the economy of Iceland we should go on strike one day.
01:23To show that you know you can't live without us.
01:30Almost all the women in Iceland are on strike today.
01:34It's National Women's Day there and the women are refusing to work in even their own homes.
01:37If women don't work everything collapses.
01:42We are going to show them that we can stop this society.
01:46The man thought it was ridiculous.
01:49Oh you are so silly.
01:51Goodbye.
01:53The beds were not made, dishes not washed, the telephone system went dead, the national airlines cancelled flights and most of the schools were closed.
02:01Well it didn't come to blows but we got very harsh words.
02:07Mostly from men.
02:09They were thought to be destroying the role of the housewife and putting really society on its head.
02:17It's like a revolution you know.
02:19Did you hate men?
02:21No.
02:23And just wanted to tinge them a little.
02:26In many cases men are a little bit worried that women could overpower them.
02:37It was a lot of first things for many many men in Iceland that day.
02:42The men they called it the long Friday.
02:45You saw how women can do if they stand together.
02:48And they were so silly, that they were so silly.
02:49But they just wanted to be a different company.
02:55A.
02:57Similarly it was a lot of the time that they went there.
02:58But that they had their own house, they had their own house.
03:01There was a lot of the time they took to work.
03:04And they were so kind of the time they took to work.
