Mark Banasiak MLC speaks about Ian Barry while delivering the interim report on Renewable Energy Zones
Transcript
00:00I don't like using Mr Ian Barry's name during political debate, but unlike others over the
00:05past weeks and months, I actually have his consent.
00:08And I'd like to acknowledge Mr Barry as well.
00:12Would very much like to be here today, but is instead watching from the deck of his picturesque
00:16Cedar Creek property.
00:17One of the last remaining times he will be able to look out over his largely untouched
00:22old growth forested property before Energy Co get their hands on it and force him out.
00:27Ian Barry is a case that should shame every decision maker who still talks about benefit
00:31sharing with a straight face.
00:33Mr Barry's property by credible estimate contains enough biodiversity credits to offset the entire
00:38Hunter transmission project.
00:40He put a pragmatic offer on the table, around 300,000 to resolve those credits.
00:45Energy Co came back with zero, and zero while refusing to recognise that value.
00:50Energy Co used Ian's story as a case study to vet PR hires.
00:55If you want a symbol of a process that has lost its moral compass, there it is.
00:59But Energy Co never had a moral compass.
01:02It was born without one, and through bipartisanship of Labor and Liberals, has flatly refused to
01:06develop one.
01:07They gave weasel words in estimates, saying they treat people with dignity and respect.
01:12That is a bald-faced lie, evidenced by the sheer number of concerns raised about their behaviour
01:16in the inquiry.
