00:00Oh my gosh, I can't believe this.
00:03Um...
00:04Everything's falling.
00:06I feel like I watched the Vreena's performance when preparing.
00:09Let's go, MTV!
00:11I've got something really special up my sleeve.
00:14I think there's so many different fans that are gonna be watching for so many different reasons.
00:18I just want all of those fans to get to see their favorites.
00:22What in the Sam Hill were you waiting for?
00:26The MTV VMAs just took over New York.
00:29And from rehearsals, to the carpet, to Sunday night's big show, performances and winners,
00:35we got All You Missed and Billboard All Access.
00:47Doja Cat shook the crowd with new music.
00:49Tate McCrae, for sure.
00:51As Tate McCrae wowed with her usual mesmerizing choreo.
00:56The show's producer talked about the juggernaut of putting on this show.
01:04It's really a crazy week leading up to the VMAs,
01:07because kind of anything can go wrong from people missing their planes,
01:11now getting the COVID, technical problems, and it's hundreds of people involved.
01:18So it gets messy and long and hairy.
01:21But it's mostly fun, because anything can happen in a live show.
01:24Miley Cyrus' big teddy bear couldn't open up, so she couldn't come out of the teddy bear.
01:31We couldn't fit Bruno's whole band on the stage or get Justin's pyro.
01:36So anything can happen.
01:37The most grueling is pretty much the Vanguard Award,
01:40because they're the longest and we use the entirety of the stage.
01:43No stress, no fights, I'm leaving it all behind.
01:51Mariah Care received the Vanguard Award and delighted the crowd with nothing but hits.
01:56Ariana Grande presented the icon.
01:59Thank you so much MTV for giving me the Vanguard Award.
02:04I can't believe I'm getting my first VMA tonight.
02:10She also won for her music video, Type Dangerous.
02:13This is my favorite song, it's either Obsessed or My All.
02:17Cat's Eye themselves took the pre-show with Gnarly and Gabriella.
02:27And took home an award.
02:29Thank you so much, this is all very new to us.
02:33This is our first time ever doing this, so this is amazing.
02:38I like hosting because I like seeing the smiles on the artist's face.
02:41I like the energy in the room.
02:43I like to be close to music.
02:45I'm a big fan of music in general and a fan of like seeing people win and be in the vibe and the energy.
02:53I just really enjoy it.
02:55He's a consummate professional.
02:57I've known him since he started out and did that wonderful Unplugged,
03:01which was the first hip-hop Unplugged we ever did, but he's pretty great.
03:05That's right, this is the birthplace of MTV, the place where so many music legends got their start.
03:10I guess just like the nerves, like managing the nerves because I'm like actually kind of shitting myself.
03:15So hopefully I'll be able to, if I can do the VMAs, I can do the tours, you know what I mean?
03:21So that's like my way of preparing.
03:24I cannot believe how potent Lola Young's voice is. It is insane.
03:30Lola is crazy.
03:33It was my first time doing anything choreographed with like dancers.
03:44So it's honestly been so fun and you know, I think I found my calling.
03:49I think I'm going to quit music and become a dancer.
03:51And we talked to our song of the summer champ, Alex Warren.
04:03I was shocked. It kind of was nonchalantly kind of happened to where I just got tagged in an Instagram photo.
04:08And I was like, is this a typo?
04:11So yeah, definitely. I was just randomly one day, I just looked up my phone and I was like, that's freaking crazy.
04:16Preference performance has been fun, honestly. We've been on tour so much that we didn't really get any rehearsal time.
04:21So it's just been sound checks, which has been really, really nice.
04:24And now I'm here and we've been running it a few times now.
04:27And I don't know, it's a blast. It's really fun to see like how like everything comes together.
04:32I guess I'm so used to just playing with a guitar and like a drummer.
04:35So to be able to have a full band and everything kind of be a huge team is really, really cool.
04:41Alex Warren, he's going to crush his crazy live.
04:52He took home Best New Artist and we got one of the hottest group of VMA performers before they hit the stage.
04:58So, you know, the tour was amazing. Back to the radio was pretty, one of my best experiences lately in music.
05:06It was a really successful tour.
05:08But, you know, we always like to bring colors and concepts.
05:13And of course, in this case with, you know, with Jake Kiles and Lenny Tavares, you know, we're bringing some cool visual effects, of course.
05:20And then when DJ Snake, you know, we're doing like another story, kind of the story we told on the video of Noventa.
05:27So, it's pretty fun. It was really cool.
05:29For us, he invited us. We were super, we were like happy. We were like, let's go. First time in the VMA.
05:35You know, we've done a lot of awards, but not the VMA. So, we're glad to be here and honored.
05:40Sabrina Carpenter was also one of the night's most talked about performances as she supported trans rights.
06:00Conan Gray delivered vodka cranberry.
06:03Rose and Bruno Mars won for Apatet.
06:13First of all, thank you so much, Bruno. I can't believe this. I'm going to call you after, so I'll say everything.
06:20Thank you so much for believing in me.
06:22Artist of the Year went to Lady Gaga.
06:24Getting ready for the show, I thought how much it would mean to me to win this award tonight.
06:31And I cannot begin to tell you what this means to me.
06:37Lady Gaga's performing, right? I'm excited to see.
06:39I actually saw her perform at Coachella and it was insane.
06:44Like, it was like actually like a theater production.
06:46So, I'm excited to see what she does tonight.
06:48I grew up listening to her. She's a legend, so.
06:52She performed her brand new track.
06:54And Video of the Year went to Ariana Grande.
07:03Art has been a safe space for me since I was a kid.
07:06I'm so grateful that I get to do this with my life and to have such fiercely loving and supportive fans.
07:11I mean, the VMAs, first and foremost, it's a visual medium.
07:14So, it's about the visual breakthroughs, the impact that artists have made visually, that musicians have made visually.
07:21And now, I mean, we live in a time now where people really listen with their eyes in a lot of ways.
07:26So, it could never be more relevant and more important than it is right now in the world when you think about the entire world.
07:34Plus, it's absolutely multi-generational, which I think is important too.
07:39So, it's not like we're pledging allegiance to the old way of doing things.
07:44You know what I'm saying?
07:45There's like artists from every generation, from the absolute youngest to the most iconic.
07:50And I think that that also is a cool thing about the VMAs, that kind of melting pot of all these different artists,
07:57all these different genres, all kind of contributing in different ways to the world of music.
