00:53welcome everyone to WWE's greatest moments I'm Michael Cole and on this edition we're looking

00:59back at some of the wildest moments to ever happen on late night television the destination program

01:04known as Saturday night's main event the original run of Saturday night's main event began in 1985

01:11as a special during the time slot coveted by the massive hit Saturday Night Live Saturday Night

01:16Live will not be seen tonight so we can bring you the following entertainment special so kick back

01:22and relax for Saturday night's main event for the first time in nearly 30 years professional

01:28wrestling was back on network television NBC will soon begin a regular late night television program

01:36combining rock comedy and wrestling executive producer Dick Ebersole explains why

01:42the wrestling is not really the most important thing it's the drama and the theater of it all

01:46Dick suggested to Vince that he changed his product around a little bit to make it more massive appeal

01:54welcome to the greatest special and wrestling Saturday night main event

01:59put the first one on mother's day weekend may 11th 1985. big show for sure i remember

02:07nassau coliseum in new york i mean it was like a big bright light show

02:16when NBC had these matches kind of the old school wrestling sensibility merged with a bigger television

02:22presence let's go down to ringside for what we call piper's pit i don't know what it's like myself but you

02:29are a loser to be on network tv especially taking the place of saturday night live it was huge oh yeah

02:38look at this you know what was so cool about Saturday night's main event it was entertaining you know

02:43my mother never been in new york before and i thought this was a very special time to bring up

02:46her mother's name we had a mother's day party what a party by the way thank you very much i hope everybody's

02:52having a good time it definitely fits the spectacle of what wwe at the time was trying to do we'll get

02:58you back to more action don't go away trying to capture as many viewers as possible look at the

03:03animal and it was the highest rated show of the year in that time period we certainly hope that you

03:09had an extraordinary time we certainly did wwe certainly captured new fans with saturday night's

03:17main event which meant even more eyes on hulk hogan the greatest professional athlete in the world

03:24today in february 1992 tensions were mounting between hulk hogan and sid justice and when hulk hogan

03:31was named number one contender for the wwe championship sid was none too pleased hulk hogan yes

03:39is it because i'm not a big movie star like hulk hogan the big immortal one himself

03:44became time to take on rick flair and the undertaker in a tag team match

03:49would the two superstars be able to put that all behind them or will justice be served

03:58and there's a tag so let's see what the homster can do that was like the beginning of our

04:04feud at that point the biggest thing i've ever been a part of

04:08we knew we were on to something big we had to build the story slow but we had to keep the momentum

04:21building

04:25hogan reaching for the tag here it is

04:39he was just the opposite of my character he was the bad boy like the evil kid

04:43justice but sir it has not don't get any better than that to me i think it made my whole career

04:55wwe fans had always tuned in to see the action and mayhem inside the squared circle

05:00but saturday night's main event provided much more than that you are uncle elber

05:04that's right neighbor i'm uncle elmer a good old uncle elmer he's a very likeable guy he's a lot

05:11of fun and congratulations in order to you uncle elmer because you're going to be tying the knot

05:15i'm more getting married that's right i'm sure i am in 1985 uncle elmer was set to

05:21wed his longtime girlfriend joyce in what would be the first wedding on network television in well

05:27over a decade uncle elmer's wedding was the first nationally televised wedding since tiny tim got

05:39married on the tonight show and that was a huge ratings monster so uh i think wwe was hoping for

05:46some of the same with uncle elmer playing the wedding oh look at that now that is beautiful

05:54it's a hillbilly wedding you've never been to a function like that like

05:58what better way to experience new cultures than to watch it on television

06:03all right here it comes now just like you know love a wwe wedding you just

06:08know that everything's gonna go perfectly nothing's gonna go wrong

06:10the ultimate villain rowdy roddy piper what i remember most about uncle elmer's wedding was jesse

06:34ventura's commentary specifically when the two of them kissing looked like too far in the mississippi

06:40river going after the same piece of glory that was over 40 years ago and i can recall it verbatim

06:46just a great line all right elmer you did it you did it elmer the uncle elmer wedding was completely

06:54legit he really did get married so if you loved live weddings wwe was the only place to be

07:01in his first year saturday night's main event was proving to be a ratings hit professional wrestling

07:16was on the main stage of a nationally broadcast network and audiences couldn't get enough needless

07:22to say if you wanted to make a name for yourself saturday night was the place to do it jake the

07:28snake roberts was a prime example if you keep playing with snakes you're going to get bit

07:35in may 1986 the state was set to do battle against the beloved ricky the dragon steamboat

07:40what followed was one of the most volatile acts in saturday night's main event history

07:47ricky the dragon steamboat one of the most popular athletes in the world wrestling federation today

07:52saying hello

07:56the match has not even started yet

08:06oh no it was a really serious atmosphere and moment my head legitimately hit the cement

08:14oh no steamboat unconscious he has to be totally out on it i damn near herniated myself trying to get

08:23him into the ring no it was horrifying man oh yeah i think damien's coming out with some air

08:30do you see ricky steamboat cover with that snake jade kind of choking him taunting him with the head of

08:35damien that's the worst thing i've ever seen in my life they're starting to send people from the

08:41back out there to check i'm screaming look at what you made me do backstage with the doc i didn't have

08:48any concussionary after effects but the whole side of my face blew up

08:56the dreaded steel cage match was a sight to behold and when steel surrounds the squared circle audiences

09:01paid attention two opponents are locked in to settle their differences and the only way to win is to

09:07escape the cage in january 1987 the rivalry between hulk hogan and mr wonderful paul orndorff had reached

09:14its boiling point this steel cage is a dead end for mr wonder the two were set to wage war inside the

09:22structure with a controversial ending the likes that network television hadn't seen before

09:32first time ever a steel cage match have been on network television the rivalry was built up so

09:38strong he had the whole package for a bad guy oh you're wasting no time at all mr wonderful has

09:45started to match off quick everybody was talking about this they're going up opposite sides mr wonderful's

09:54gaining on him hulk hogan's feet and paul orndorff's feet touched the ground at exactly the same time

10:04it was a tie

10:17hogan now moving in

10:23and dropped the leg of the champion orndorff did a great job the entertainment factor was at an

10:28all-time high and we did pull it off successful tight on our fans

10:32best cage match probably ever people still talk about that cage match

10:37still they come this ain't the movies here mega power yeah mega power hey you what do you think

10:49you're doing there you talking to me sir yeah i'm talking to you i ain't no sir i'm the mountie

10:56one of the most reviled superstars in 1992 was the man known as the mountain the corrupted canadian

11:02officer carried around a cattle braw to shock respect out of his opponents the mountie always gets

11:07this man and when rowdy roddy piper defeated him for the intercontinental championship the mountie

11:15vowed to teach the hot rod some law and order i'm gonna take my internet the battle back tonight

11:24we're gonna have some fun here on saturday night's main event we're ready for our first matchup

11:28the mountie he did a lot of damage not only to wwe superstars but to the reputation of mounties

11:35all over canada and now look out here comes a bulldog no look at that hit the referee i love villains

11:41who cheated and i love villains who had gimmicks oh wait a minute it's a shot stick he's looking at

12:04can you believe it man it seems like everything we tried to do against piper nothing ever worked

12:39you gotta have credit where credit's due i think it's very clever piece of business to throw in there

12:43hulkamania was indeed running wild in 1989 the immortal hulk hogan was not only wwe champion

12:55a network tv star but a hollywood main eventer with the theatrical release of no holds barred

13:01back in wwe hogan had his own problems in the form of the big boss man for the wwe championship

13:13inside a dreaded steel cage tonight there's gonna be a big surprise a surprise

13:23what is going on zeus wants a real life confrontation here mcmahon

13:28this ain't the movies here zeus is a crazy monster

13:36watching zeus and hogan kind of square up knowing that they were in this movie together

13:40kicked in the chest area by zeus that's kind of part of the magic while you fall in love with pro

13:44wrestling

13:45zeus is just leaving him laying and hogan's still got to contend with the boss

13:50i mean everybody in the audience and everybody behind the stage we were going oh did that really

14:11happen for hulk to do a big move like the superplex people go oh my god this is incredible hulk saved

14:20those for special moments

14:28that was a crazy night because we had such a great reception

14:30there was perhaps no hotter team in the 1980s than axe and smash of demolition the duo dominated the

14:41squared circle quickly capturing the tag team championships at wrestlemania four

14:49for the next 16 months many tried and many failed to dethrone the champions heading into their historic

14:56478th day as the title holders demolition were set to lock up on network television against the skilled

15:03combination of arne anderson and tully blanchard the brain busters

15:14demolition was on 478 days as tag team champions so i remember watching demolition growing up and just

15:21being like oh these guys are never gonna lose and they are intimidating just to take a look at them

15:26is intimidating as a kid you're watching this you have these two like almost literal monsters

15:31face paint black leather spikes like my money would not have been on the brain busters to have this

15:38new team come in that were hot they had heenan in their corner it was a big deal

15:42we can pull the catch oh wait a minute i'm gonna try to throw a chair in the ring to the budget oh

15:48oh he gets smashed with the chair art anderson covering one two three they get it demolition

15:55they lose on live national television to the brain busters so this was something that a

16:00whole new audience was seeing their first title change demolition is invincible and we know who we

16:07are up next is our final two moments on the countdown what will take the number one spot

16:24throughout the years saturday night's main event was the stage for many wwe superstars to shine on late

16:29night network television and that's exactly what sean michaels did in november of 1992 the heartbreak kid

16:35was rapidly climbing the ranks of wwe and found himself in an intercontinental championship match

16:41against the british bulldog davy boy smith

16:47the intercontinental championship matchup the british bulldog swearing up against sean michaels

16:52the intercontinental title is the workhorse title especially back then this was the title

16:58that was grooming the next world champion right now you're likely to see a classic wrestling encounter

17:04in my mind it's like oh my goodness this is an opportunity for me maybe to establish myself

17:09as a top guy so to speak look at that did you see that maneuver look at that

17:21what was so special and so remarkable about sean's style was that it's timeless you could place that

17:26work from that work from that time and have it in a match today and it still holds up

17:38at the time there was a shock that the bulldog had lost the title

17:42when you get that title you're pretty much saying to the world i'm on my way to become world champion

17:53this man's the star of the 90s intercontinental champion john michaels

17:59it is now time for our number one moment in october 1987 macho man randy savage had become one of the

18:06most popular wwe superstars of the era they can't handle the macho man randy savage the cream of the

18:12crop nobody does it better there was no denying how captivating savage was as macho madness swept the

18:19nation needless to say savage was the odds on favorite when taking on intercontinental champion

18:23the honky-tonk man macho man you sure can't dance like a honky-tonk man this time however macho man had some mega

18:33back up welcome to this capacity crowd at the hershey park arena watchman was the first thing

18:42that i wanted to be when i grew up he was so special and so amazing

18:46and then to see this moment where he's vulnerable

19:02oh my goodness elizabeth almost struck by the holding top man you don't know oh no

19:10at that instant when i pushed her that was really really a big deal my gosh has he got

19:16anybody that's going to come to help him is anybody that's going to save him wait a minute elizabeth

19:20is back elizabeth is coming back what courage and what brilliant display he had it was crazy

19:26and all of a sudden here comes the holster the holster carrying away cleaning house

19:32when they came together it was like something was going to be unstoppable

19:38with me and randy we were gold

19:40and it was like the handshake heard around the world the kids still do it to this day

19:57the mega yeah the mega yeah the mega power yeah mega power

20:02the handshake that literally stopped the world in its tracks the madness and the mania coming

20:11together in the biggest moment audiences had ever seen on saturday night's main event the initial run

20:17of this program was so successful wwe recently revived it giving today's fans a chance to make

20:23their own memories of what saturday night wrestling is all about that'll do it for this edition of
