00:00The Fall and Liberation of Bataan, April 9, 1942
00:03In the sweltering heat of the Philippine jungles,
00:06tens of thousands of starving and exhausted soldiers lay down their arms.
00:10This was the fall of Bataan, one of the darkest, yet most heroic chapters in Philippine history.
00:17When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in December 1941,
00:22they also invaded the Philippines, then a U.S. territory.
00:26General Douglas MacArthur, along with Filipino and American troops,
00:30fought desperately to defend the islands.
00:32But the Japanese forces were too strong,
00:35and the defenders were pushed back to the Bataan Peninsula.
00:40For months, Filipino and American soldiers held their ground.
00:44But food and medicine ran out.
00:46Malaria and hunger claimed more lives than bullets.
00:49Still, they fought on earning Bataan the title, The Last Stand of Asia.
00:54On April 9, 1942,
00:58Major General Edward King surrendered more than 70,000 soldiers.
01:02What followed is remembered with horror,
01:04the Bataan Death March.
01:07Over 60,000 Filipinos and 15,000 Americans
01:10were forced to march over 100 kilometers under the blazing sun
01:14without food, without water.
01:17Thousands collapsed from exhaustion, disease, and brutality.
01:20Those who stumbled were beaten, bayoneted, or left to die by the roadside.
01:24But the story of Bataan does not end in despair.
01:27Across the islands, Filipino guerrillas continued the fight,
01:31sabotaging Japanese operations and keeping the flame of resistance alive.
01:35In 1944, true to his promise,
01:42I shall return, MacArthur led the liberation of the Philippines.
01:47By 1945, Bataan was free, but at a terrible cost.
01:51Hundreds of thousands of lives lost, cities destroyed, and a nation scarred forever.
01:56Today, Bataan is remembered not only for the suffering,
02:02but for the courage of those who endured.
02:05Their sacrifice reminds us that freedom is never free,
02:08it is paid for by the blood and bravery of those who came before us.
02:11Remember Bataan never again.
