00:00over a decade ago the nation fell in love with a school in Yorkshire and an
00:28inspiring English teacher mr. Burton it's the same moment when the trees are loose
00:34that's insane who helped one student I want to thank you today for letting me speak overcome
00:41his stammer I actually thank mr. Burton now ten years on mr. Burton's been promoted to head
00:49teacher shirts in ties on coats off wipe the smirk of your face now don't make myself clear you should
00:57be really really really proud of your achievements in that time we've had six prime ministers a global
01:03pandemic that's a bit dramatic and Huddersfield town have been in and out of the Premier League
01:08now the cameras are back these are insane to capture the new challenges get rid of snapchat
01:15tick-tock get rid of Instagram facing the school no therapy you know he's just said leave me alone I
01:23can tell you don't want me here we do want you here pal it's a difficult world that we live in
01:27now and it's a difficult world to grow up in but these are moments that hopefully children will look
01:32back on and the years to come and think actually I learned a lot from that school call me a fat slut
01:36how old hey bye can we just talk about the fun that you kiss my ex-boyfriend so we spent a year
01:42I will be so much seeing the troubles no tears it's toxic and he's dragging you down the wrong path and
01:51triumphs through the eyes of the staff you committed a criminal offense and the students at the very start
02:03of adult life my aim is to inspire you to achieve your goals
02:08can we just
02:11oh
02:12Jacob it's not funny time flies when you're having fun baby cakes
02:16baby face 32 and I'm going great and I blame you what
02:20that was the most mentally exhausting three months of my entire life
02:25life would be so much easier working in a school if there were no students
02:29welcome to the world of education
02:32you know you want one of these oh my god oh my god man since becoming head teacher seven years ago
02:59well this is something else have you got it in pink the doodoo in pink I almost bought a pink one
03:04mr. Burton has approached the role with a single-minded ambition for the students at Thornhill when I took
03:11over I just wanted to be really clear about what we wanted to be so work hard be nice it's a simple
03:17message I'm a simple man this baby's made for two ultimately we want young people to leave this place
03:23and go on and be the best version of themselves and be amazing incredible fantastic human beings
03:28do you know somebody once said to me yeah your values aren't your values if they have to be written
03:33on the side of a cup but on a high vis they absolutely are you know it sounds simple but across the course of five
03:39years it's really not helping mr. Burton with his mission is a senior team including deputy head mrs.
03:46Ali and assistant head mrs. Delaney Hudson I think I will have a nice day today you know I have a nice
03:53day every day and over 100 teachers and support staff the reason why he just misbehaves for me every
03:59lesson would you like to know well I just don't like your personality together they're responsible for
04:07for the over 900 students who attend Thornhill you've got a minute to get to lesson let's go
04:12come on come on come on it's Friday and on corridor duty is year eight student manager Mr. Wilson year
04:21eight is a bit of a difficult age group for for them as well as other stuff why are you not in lesson
04:27you're now all late yeah because you're late and you've walked past me three times they found the
04:33feet once in year eight they're not the little smiley shy year sevens they once were they get a
04:38little bit more cocky and arrogant mr. gateway you're developing hormones personality changes
04:45friendship groups and where you fit in can be a lot for for some year eight students
04:52right go on then basically there's something wrong with me i'm like a psychopath genuinely i'm
05:00gonna start by saying i disagree with you you're not a psychopath as student managers we're that
05:05face that's not a teacher we're not in charge of their results we're not giving them the curriculum
05:09we're supporting them through the other the other things what we can do about this you don't like
05:13him hanging around with these two you don't like your mates why don't you just hang around with
05:17madison and skip happily hand in hand into the future they speak to us about problems or things
05:25going on in their lives that they wouldn't normally talk to class teachers about the reason she didn't
05:30want to be with them anymore is after this halloween party turned around to her and said are you going
05:34to stop dressing like a any time soon can be quite challenging with some of them then it's my job to
05:41help them figure out what's going on to cause these issues it's always here eight one student
06:02well acquainted with mr wilson's office is year eight amy when i think of school i mainly think i don't
06:11want to go why do i have to go the only reason to go there is for the hash browns and my friends
06:22i love the hash browns here like they are perfect they're just a bloody hash brown
06:28i love hash browns better than mcdonald's better than frozen better than homemade perfection
06:35it's just like sent from the heavens above these are actually mine
06:40you strike me as a confident person
06:44i wouldn't say i'm that confident like if i'm one of my mates more confident
06:51why is your tight so hurly i feel like the bible but if it's just me definitely not
06:59all right i need to go find me a solution
07:06all right no problem no worries speak to you soon bye bye
07:10all right hello why is there a dinosaur with a massive ball in its mouth have you seen it it's
07:16well cool what is it that's scary i should use that for my cat right go no because you won't get the
07:25ball back right hello any problems in particular um i lost my purse and i have my card in it and all my
07:36money and all my savings and like i cannot go to sleep when i've lost something the other week you
07:43lost your pencil case did you not sleep that night no amy's a funny little character she's got very
07:52very old head on young shoulders sometimes i sit and talk to her and it's like you're talking to
07:58a 50 60 year old adult who's been around for years and not a 12 13 year old girl who's
08:04just kind of starting out in life like i've tried herbal tea it tasted disgusting and i didn't sleep
08:13going for a run around garden tried that i've tried doing a digital detox the only time i got my phone
08:20i would just put on my bus pass that didn't help um how lessons things like that today i had i like to
08:28call them ticker tax i don't know why is that playing on the word tic tacs i love tic tacs i like
08:34it anyways my neck kept on going and going and going and going and going so i started outside my
08:40whistling was just getting worse yeah my neck was twitching quite a bit
08:47i'm just saying make sure of random stuff that put together incorrectly made me
08:52well there we go um i don't really feel it coming it just kind of happens if you know what i mean like
09:04i'll just sit there and then i'll just do it some days i'll be like fine i'll be sort of confident
09:10i'll be like you know what i can do this some other days i'll just want to lay in bed and disintegrate
09:16my eye went off like i'll keep on like stirring and it makes me really anxious and then my tics
09:26are kicking so i'm like and basically basically amy's tourette's went new to us in september i think
09:35it developed over the summer holidays and i don't we we don't know why she tends to be a bit more vocal
09:43with her tics if she's struggling her anxiety takes over the panic sets in i'm going to walk
09:49you up because i need to tell kids that they've got detentions that's very naughty that i'd fear
09:54that if the tics were to get worse or different tics came out that she'd struggle with how to handle
10:00those i wouldn't want to struggle in silence i'd want her to keep talking and that that wouldn't be
10:05worried for me in this one nice one your right arm it's gonna tap towards you your heel and then bring
10:16it back in and then go with your left tap okay voices off facing forward connie riley absolutely not
10:32we're sat down and we're concentrating on listening it's form time for the year eights
10:37and tutor mr geary is going over their behavior points positives for last week amy five billy
10:46three jacob one oh what and some students are doing better than others now we're going to do your
10:53negatives ethan one isaac one riley nine nine what negatives for last week
11:04we didn't really see a peep out riley in year seven he was just this quiet little mouse walking
11:11round and then we get into year eight and it's like whack who's this character he's a little tornado
11:22hello riley you've not got your equipment out so get it out for me thank you
11:32we've noticed that there's sensory issues so he can't walk to school in his shoes so he keeps his
11:38shoes in my office and then in lessons really struggles to focus riley concentrating please
11:46thank you i don't have your head hanging out the window though riley is full of energy but he's also
11:54extremely intelligent he's really really clever i think he sometimes doesn't know how to contain that
12:00energy um and keep it in a sensible manner riley i've asked you once i've asked you again it'll be
12:08a verbal warning and else in form we're not singing we're also not reacting like that
12:16i don't like me or want to get in trouble it's just my body gets me in trouble for like doing stuff
12:22and shouting out when i don't want to right come on in riley take a seat riley's frequent disruptions
12:36means he has regular check-ins with assistant head mrs delaney hudson right let's have a look at this
12:42report so we've got b1 failure to follow instructions that is bubbles that i will follow instructions you
12:53don't even know when it was shouting out so we've got answer no no you didn't you shouted out manga
13:03manga yeah oh we've got a bit of inappropriate language around school where so when you've got
13:12asked to change your trainers you told her to shut up so target one it's gonna be to use
13:23appropriate language yeah and then to follow instructions i can do that sometimes we're going
13:34for all time all right riley there you go you have a good day you can do this riley i know you can
13:48if riley's behavior continues in the way it is then we need to really start digging into what is going on
13:56if we've got any traits of adhd is it that he just wants to be a class clown does he want to make
14:02people laugh shut up or does he actually just enjoy misbehaving
14:22it's monday and at breakfast club amy and her friends are getting down to the important business
14:38of the day i'm getting my donuts tonight i'm allergic to my donuts
14:45anytime i have it i always end up warming you better not get at home and you never know i might
14:51end up single with it all
14:56well we're all friends me millie marcy and ella and then gabby's recently joined like we're all like close
15:02like it makes me feel very happy millie where did you get them from timo yeah oh oh oh timo
15:12amy was a really bubbly person she'll say a joke and all is that because she's really funny amy
15:18supports me by like nobody's listening to me and like trying to make me happy all the time
15:23amy's friendship group's very up and down they're a good set of friends they're there for each other
15:34and they've all embraced the fact that amy's got tics and they're not phased they're not bothered
15:42but dealing with teenage emotions is like a roller coaster so most days they're amazing they got on
15:47really well and the next minute they hate each other and the whole world's ending she just slapped me
15:51off completely she's dead i passed me the room
15:55ella yeah but she didn't know anything you left me sorry i'm going over to my house
16:02sometimes i fall out it's quite sad but we're really good friendship so i'll just get friends
16:09with them later yeah you're sorry you left me you didn't make me say all you didn't talk to me
16:14out you completely blank me on fallouts and teenage girls it's it's massive and it could be
16:23something so small which could actually ruin the day there was a time when i didn't have many
16:31friends and i was kind of by myself yeah i do sometimes worry about that happening again
16:39do you know why it's because i asked you in the morning i said into the morning do you want
16:44to over to my house and also me and you said no i think amy she's got the added pressure of
16:51the tourettes the anxiety surrounding that so i think it would be easier for her to have a wobble
16:58and struggle so it's figuring out how to support her to build amy's confidence mr wilson has arranged
17:07regular sessions in the school's well-being hub hey how are you i'm freezing you're freezing yeah
17:15got your positive potato with you i have got my positive potato and today friend marcy has been
17:21asked to join have a seat i just want you to think about self-esteem a little bit
17:30i want you to pay some compliments to yourself amy what do you like about yourself
17:39i don't know positives
17:42um
17:51nothing
17:56it's stressing me out he's doing all this work on self-esteem because i don't get it and
18:01i can't find out good about myself the thing is amy we need you to be able to look in the mirror and
18:10feel positive about yourself and be able to say some positive things i know this but i can't do that
18:15i've tried
18:18these tics have been really bad okay
18:21i'm gonna have to snap my neck back into place amy's tourette's effect in like many ways like
18:32usually when it's really bad in lesson she can't really do her work or concentrate or all like that
18:39i think lots of people obviously turn around like oh why is she making that sound and then
18:44she she can't really say it so i usually say it for her
18:48she's always stuck up for me and always been there for me and i'll always stick up for her as well
18:56right um i will grab you both next week and just assess where we're at with things and what's next
19:07five four three two one right i don't want the room left like tk max get it nice and tidy please
19:17let's get towards lessons please
19:28if i have to speak to you everyone one by one and take statements i will do but i'm hoping that you're
19:33mature enough to tell me who it was because then we can deal with those people rather than all five
19:37of you anybody like to own up to it
19:43no i'm waiting anyone
19:50own up to it sir's heard it and he knows it was somebody right who who made the big noises
19:56very quietly in we come
20:04oh it's cover it's cover it's cover
20:09right mohammad sarah riley here
20:14it's period four and science for the year eight
20:22alfie abderrahman ibrahim
20:26fish i spent months away i'll get you from prep room no riley you are now on a verbal because
20:37you've not listened to my instructions what happens in my head it's just like
20:42a mess
20:47work me cream my water
20:51i've been the right mindset to do a lesson but then i'll get into a lesson and then my mindset will
20:58just change completely so that i won't want to do the lesson so we're looking at enzymes that is bubbles
21:05i'm just going to remind you of that report riley
21:13despite being in top set riley's lively behavior has landed him on rapport for the fifth time this year
21:21riley that should be one now
21:28we understand that there are factors that affect children's behavior and there might be reasons that
21:32contribute to it but there are no excuses for poor behavior we have to deal with the behavior
21:38itself it's important that we do because it isn't okay to be stopping other students learning
21:43riley go and wait outside please and you need to take that jacket off all right
21:51after and why have you still got a paper airplane in your hand despite being told that
21:55that should be in the bin we'll ask you to wait outside i'm listening out of the door
22:01with it closed okay
22:07have you only just got in oh is it skylar yeah she's here what we're late for
22:15that's a big scarf have you got smaller scarf got bigger
22:19see you a bit skylar
22:22right
22:23so riley's mum had some concerns early on
22:27yeah around some possible send needs that have gone unidentified at primary school initial
22:33screening and testing shows mild dyslexia yeah and it is mild because he clearly has coping strategies
22:45because he's pulled a sas score of 102 out
22:48well he's reading above average yeah him being on report his behavior improves in terms of removals
22:56from lessons so i'm going to do this neurodiversity screener with him which is not diagnostic at all
23:04however if we want to look at that possibility the diagnosis has to come from a consultant
23:11psychiatrist or consultant yeah um pediatrician
23:18i don't necessarily think the diagnosis is the most important thing because the piece of paper
23:22itself is not a shield from the world around them it isn't something that's going to stop things
23:26being a challenge what is going to help them is teaching them the tips and the strategies that you
23:31can use not just for now in the lessons now but for the future as well
23:35if this comes through and marries up with everything else and all we're seeing is that
23:42we've got a little bit of mild dyslexia then we're going to have to think about it is this a behavior
23:48choice it's really important for us as a school but more importantly for riley that we get this right
23:58now he's in year eight so he's already found his feet but it's still very early so we need to get it
24:04right for riley now right it's the usual sir he does have a second pair of trousers on under there
24:14i can't believe you walk around like that we had an issue yesterday sir with the vape stuffed down
24:19the front of his second pair of trousers so he's told me today the reason one go on then make sure
24:26sir can see the pocket tree yeah i can't believe you wear them like that is it not uncomfortable
24:31no do you know where you're going miss delaney's office bye
24:48it's not mr goodwin says he can go back all the time perfect yeah right riley sorry come on in
24:54in a bid to try and understand what's going on with riley the first step for mrs delaney hudson
25:01is to carry out a neurodiversity screening i'm gonna be typing into a computer while you're answering
25:11questions i need you to be genuine and honest right are you ready for your first question
25:22mm-hmm do you have difficulty making out the sounds of words sometimes
25:33do you find that your sentences come out sounding muddled often
25:43do you find that you can't explain why you did something yeah often
25:48do you find it difficult to decide which is the correct mathematical strategy to use no
26:01do you ever get told that you're staring at people often
26:07my mum thinks i have adhd but i don't think i do
26:11it stresses me out because like i want to know why i can't sit still
26:20now i hope i can eventually like know what i'm doing like what's making me do stuff
26:29right you've answered all of them
26:34my concern for riley at the minute is that he's a really intelligent young man he's very likable
26:41but if his behavior continues as it is and this potentially is not ascend need and these are
26:47behavior choices then the sanctions that are coming riley's way are going to be quite significant
26:53it's break time
27:08girls are we falling out no
27:12louis it's break time
27:15and riley is burning off some excess energy
27:25fill that with water
27:27fill that with water
27:29come fill the bottles up
27:30it's been over a week since riley's neurodiversity screening
27:58hiya bobby do you want to come through
28:02you all right
28:03and mum bobby has come in to meet mrs delaney hudson for the results
28:09riley i don't need to introduce you it's your mum
28:12yeah please
28:14i think you need to bring your show to him and have a bit of polish on him
28:17i've got to stay out of him
28:20give me give me a shot
28:21no i'm doing it
28:24what's that like for you bobby did he call you bobby
28:32right riley are you ready yeah
28:36his reading age is well above average
28:39the rest of his screening showed really really slight dyslexia but less than 50 percent of any
28:48indicators that we used were positive for adhd so less than a 50 chance for that
28:55and then your teacher feedback is that you display more concerning behavior traits after lunch
29:03one thing i want you to do which will come through in here is i'm going to ask him to keep a food diary
29:13it just helps us and it helps your teachers to have a look at exactly what is going on
29:20so average daily diet we eat a mix chocolate we eat a mix normally
29:26oh you forgot that chocolate bit it's still weird it yeah but then he puts sugar on him
29:36a tablespoon a dessert spoon a tablespoon of sugar make some medicine
29:44cup of coffee
29:45is it normal coffee yeah normal coffee no so we've got some more sugar banged in that coffee
29:55yeah yeah rally are you not sweet enough so we've got a coffee with two sugars then sometimes we'll take
30:03a tube of pringles out of cupboard do these pringles do we pop at break and then we don't stop
30:11until after p3 and it's way to school normally oh you just graze on them so when i give you this food
30:20diary there's going to be some stuff that i'm going to put on there obvious stuff what me and your mum
30:26think that are just an absolute no-go so you've got to be honest with us you need to be honest yeah
30:33see what you've had if riley commits to the food diary i'm quite confident that we might have found
30:41the trigger as to what causes some of his behavior choices but i am going to absolutely have to watch
30:48riley like a hawk
30:49good morning fellas good morning girls it's monday at thornhill what are we finishing there
31:01what you got breakfast bar good stuff set you up for the day that won't it good morning
31:06and ready for the morning catch-up with her friends is year eight amy
31:23where are you going off outside amazing but today millie is giving amy the cold shoulder
31:36bye i sometimes worry about people being like upset with me it might be linked to my anxiety i
31:52i honestly don't know but i just overthink everything i don't know why it just triggers
32:00something inside which makes you feel really awkward when i sat down next to millie when i sat
32:06down next to millie she picked up a bag side eye me and it starts scooting away from anyone staring at me
32:13be like the whole day ruined
32:20that needs to go in the bin the tube of crisps in the bin please right what are you eating today
32:27yeah yeah jam toast and a cup of coffee since agreeing to keep a food diary mrs delaney hudson has
32:34decided to keep a watchful eye on riley's diet any snacks in that bag no that's really good any snacks in
32:41the pockets my pockets are empty apart from my pocket any pringles no no no they've never forgotten any
32:50any red bull no actually don't what you're gonna have for your dinner depends don't just get loads of
33:02chocolate cookies all right there's nothing i'll eat from the canteen that looks amazing
33:10doesn't it if it's not pizza i'll just get a cookie
33:14i sometimes have double pizza so pizza for dinner and pizza for tea after and that's a good day that
33:23that is a good day
33:26what's your favorite time of the school day lunch time
33:31lunch time because i'm very very hungry you're always hungry i know
33:36that baguette's worth a go what is it what is it it's not about what it is it's about what it represents
33:44oi it's wanking around ed with a piece of toast jacket with cheese and beans
33:50oh it's a good one oh and fish and chips
33:56this is why school dinners are rubbish it's like prison food
34:00oh no i think some of them are nice chips with no salt i bring my own salt it's not okay jesse
34:19mace do you want a piece of chocolate no thank you hey food diary
34:23oh it's too much sugar have you had all that no i've only had literally that right put that back
34:29where's the rest of it gone then i know you think we're being mean now limiting your intake of sugar
34:34but honestly you will thank us for it how did i not find that chocolate this morning
34:39where did you have it stored at bottom
34:42what else is in oh anything else be honest with us it's bright pink open that bag let's have a look
34:51how have you got these past me they're in my bag your mum's gonna go mental
35:01i think at the minute monitoring the amount of sugar and additives
35:07that riley's eating i'm killing his joy i am the food police around here
35:12hi what's wrong with you this morning you're all right sure
35:23for amy the ongoing tension with millie is proving tricky to resolve
35:32what's wrong with you i'm waiting for millie do you know i swung with her
35:41no one i don't know because she keeps on being miserable towards me
35:46might because i'm hanging out with marcy but like i'm not not being mates with marcy just because
35:50well because i'm gonna sit over here because i can't see mom to your roast dinner
36:01do you know what's wrong with her
36:05she's been miserable to me all day and i don't know why
36:10i've been not but nice to her
36:11in my friendship group i want everyone to be happy i don't really like being stuck in the middle of
36:27millie and marcy it's a bit awkward because then i'm like which one do i hang out with which one do i
36:34think it's crucial that you have somebody to speak to me but yeah it's just like really stressful
36:40and i get really anxious yeah stressed and
36:48obviously my tics because i'm anxious i'll probably get even worse
36:52so then i'll just be sat there in the corner ticking all right i need to go find me
36:58i think it's crucial that you have somebody to speak to in a school that you're comfortable with
37:09back when i was at school and my parents separated
37:13it were quite difficult
37:17have a minute take a breather
37:21i just don't think i did open up to people when i was at school but then i don't know if there was
37:25somebody there who i could have opened up to and trusted as much as maybe what students have now
37:36right how are we so basically we nearly should we've been fine but yeah she would be in problem
37:44aren't you today like you're right millie it's fine if you don't want to talk about it so i'm gonna
37:47make sure you're all right and then she just looked away from me maybe she's having a rough day
37:52just think about when you have a rough day do you want to speak to people all the time
37:54but she was being fine with everyone else and when i'm not in the over she instantly turned
37:58away and walked away and i'm i want to talk to her but i'm scared to i think you two are very
38:06one minute your best is one minute it's not one minute you are one minute you're not
38:09yeah i'm just worried that we won't be able to patch things up because i want to be fine with all of
38:13them okay wait here
38:23i always keep in mind that their problems aren't massive for them
38:29teenagers in general have a lot going on
38:31not every teenager has that added extra of what amy's difficulties are as well
38:51thank you sir
38:53year eight amy is worried she's fallen out with friend millie
38:58so has enlisted the help of student manager mr wilson
39:04i struggle with putting myself in their shoes in those situations because i'm very
39:08oh it'll be fine crack on you know it'll sort itself out and actually i don't think it does sometimes i
39:17think they do need that intervention and that support with certain things
39:26right i'm not here chat it out
39:29but i also didn't want to you know make you upset yeah sorry um i'm just quite tired like this morning
39:48um so um so yeah i'm sorry about that are you all right with me being matched with marcy as well
39:55yeah no because i'm not bothered but like that but i'm just worried because i want as all to be
40:01mates again so i'm just getting a bit scared of like all these guys drifting apart and then me going
40:07to you and then her thinking i'm talking stuff about her and then everything just falling apart
40:12against and i'll be stuck by me's in again you can like if you feel that or you have no one just
40:18come to me literally i've got me and ella just hanging around outside making my way downtown
40:24walking fast it just depends
40:26i'm homebound sorry someone just said make him away on the radio and that's what came into my head
40:40it's nice that she does come to me and tells me a lot and it's easy for her to have that person
40:45there to talk to and trust and then she doesn't have to feel like she's bottled everything up and
40:49going home and exploding we're good come on then a lot of the time that's the biggest step for some
40:58of them just actually realizing they can trust somebody to speak to about their issues and their
41:04worries bye and languages too okay
