Melvin n'est pas le genre d'individu qu'on se plaît à rencontrer. Véritable terreur pour son entourage, cet écrivain irascible développe des manies absurdes, au point de refuser de marcher sur les rainures du carrelage et d'insister pour déjeuner chaque jour à la même table du même restaurant. Il professe également une radicale intolérance à l'égard du moindre élément perturbateur. Le chien de son voisin Simon, un peintre homosexuel, en fait la triste expérience. Lorsque l'intrus canin pénètre dans le couloir de l'étage, il ne tarde pas à rejoindre le vide-ordures. Toutefois, quand Simon est hospitalisé, que Melvin hérite du chien ressuscité et que la seule employée qui accepte de le servir doit se rendre au chevet de son fils malade, de légères évolutions transforment le comportement de l'affreux bonhomme...
