00:30Andy, how much are you looking forward to this World Cup qualification process that is very short but begins now?
00:44Yeah, I think when a campaign starts, there's always excitement as to what lies ahead.
00:52You know, this one's no different.
00:55You know, we've done really well in the Euro campaigns. I think our last World Cup campaign was a really good one in terms of the group stages.
01:03Obviously, the playoffs then became a disappointment.
01:05But I think when we look back on our last three campaigns in terms of qualifying, they've been, you know, really good.
01:11So we have to try and take that into these ones. Like I said, it's quite a short one that is mad to think it will be over in November.
01:18And so, yeah, there's only six games and it's a competitive group. And we know getting off to a good start is crucial.
01:25And hopefully we can do that. And then, you know, it stands in good stead for the next two international groups.
01:30Given that then, would it be fair to say there's not a lot of margin for error?
01:33Yeah, I think all the teams in the group will be probably seeing similar. I think, you know, obviously there's only six games.
01:43You know, like you said, there's not much margin for error. It's going to be over dead quick.
01:48And yeah, so it's up to us to try and capitalize on that, to try and, you know, get the results that we need.
01:55Nobody knows how many points you'll need, how many wins, how many draws, whatever else.
01:59But all we can do is try and compete in every single game, pick up the points that we believe we need.
02:04And if we do that, then, you know, hopefully it's enough come November or come March if we get a playoff.
02:10Last time you played here, you were playing in an unusual position given the COVID situation.
02:15What was it going to take tomorrow for Scotland to get a positive result?
02:19Yeah, I think we need to get back to, you know, what we're good at.
02:24I think obviously March was a bit of a difficult one because we had one really good result
02:30and one result that was hugely disappointing at home.
02:33And then obviously in the summer, you know, the home game was, you know, really disappointing.
02:38So, yeah, we need to get back to, you know, just working as a unit, you know,
02:44trying to be, you know, difficult to beat, but also trying to cause problems to the other team.
02:48So we're going to need that tomorrow night.
02:50You know, we've been here before.
02:51We know that, you know, the Danish fans create a fantastic atmosphere.
02:56You know, they always get right behind their team and create incredible noise,
03:00which, you know, the last time we were here, certainly the players reacted off that
03:03and, you know, put in a really good performance, especially in the first half.
03:06And then it probably took us to the second half to settle down.
03:09And, you know, the damage was probably already done, even though the second half
03:12we'd done a lot better.
03:13So it's up to us.
03:14We need to try and get off to a good start and then, you know, try and build into the game.
03:17And, you know, hopefully we can do that and also cause them problems as well.
03:21And, you know, if we can do that, then, you know, we believe we can, you know, get a positive result.
03:25Still early in the season, but how difficult or awkward a situation has it been,
03:29not playing as many minutes as you're used to?
03:31Not being awkward, I don't think awkward is the right word.
03:34I think it's been, you know, difficult for different reasons.
03:37Like you said, I'm used to playing, you know, pretty much every game I've had, you know,
03:42eight years at Liverpool where, you know, I was, apart from obviously the very start,
03:47I was always the starter, I was always playing.
03:50And now the first three games, you know, I've obviously found myself on the bench,
03:54which, you know, is what it is.
03:58I had, you know, time to think over the summer as to what, you know, I wanted.
04:01I made the decision and, yeah, I still believe that if I keep doing what I'm doing,
04:06then I'll play a lot of games for club and country.
04:09And that's my main focus this season.
04:10My main focus is, when called upon, to produce as well as I can for Scotland
04:14and to produce as well as I can for Liverpool.
04:16And hopefully I can look back in the summer that, you know, I'm heading to a World Cup
04:20and I've maybe got a couple more trophies in my back pocket as well.
04:24What were those thoughts over the summer like?
04:26Was it tough? Was it difficult?
04:28What was it like over the summer?
04:30Yeah, it was difficult.
04:31It was the first summer ever that I've probably had to, you know, think about, you know, my future.
04:34It's always been, you know, nailed on as to where I'm going to be
04:38and, you know, what my position looks like.
04:40So for the first time I probably had to consider, you know, different things.
04:44And I did that with my family and ultimately we came to the conclusion that our hearts were still at Liverpool
04:49and it was the decision to, you know, it was the decision to stay.
04:53And we committed to that and it's one that I don't regret.
04:56It's one I'm happy about.
04:58And in pre-season, you know, in the close season, I've worked probably harder than I've ever worked.
05:02In the pre-season, I've came back in, you know, really good shape, felt strong, felt, you know, really good in pre-season.
05:09I think I showed that in training and games and obviously, you know, the start of the season is always a bit difficult.
05:14I think, you know, there's only a game week to week.
05:17Obviously, we've got off to a really good start with three out of three.
05:20So from a manager's perspective, there's not much reason to change anyone's position, really.
05:25And I think when we get back, we have, you know, pretty much three games every week.
05:29From, you know, this Saturday or the Sunday, we get back until, you know, the next international break.
05:35So I'm sure there will be a bit more rotation, whether it happens in my position.
05:38That's yet to be seen. None of us can look in the future.
05:40But I believe I've done everything I can to be in the manager's thoughts.
05:43And, you know, that's all I can do.
05:46Just on this group, you know, how do you assess it?
05:49I think there's that general feeling of Greece, Denmark and Scotland, they're all going to be taking points off each other.
05:54Do you share that sort of idea that it's going to go right down the wire?
05:58Yeah, I think, you know, every pot, it's a really difficult team.
06:02I think even pot four, Belarus, it's not going to be an easy game.
06:06It's, you know, they're a difficult team to play against.
06:09And we've obviously played against Greece recently, which we know how difficult they are.
06:14We know they're a kind of up and coming team that have got, you know, good talent, young talent as well.
06:19And, you know, Denmark, I think over the last, you know, good couple of years, good few years have shown, you know, how to consistently be a kind of pot one team of qualifying for every tournament and competing in every tournament as well.
06:32And, you know, they've had a fantastic run at it.
06:35And, you know, they're a really good nation, a really good team to look at.
06:38And it's going to be difficult.
06:40But we also believe on our day that we can be difficult to play against.
06:43I think we've shown that over, you know, the last few years.
06:46And, you know, if we do that, then, like we said, we believe that we've grown confident in games and in campaigns.
06:51And if we can do that, then, you know, hopefully we can, you know, hopefully we can achieve what we want to achieve.
06:56Andy, you talk about the kind of the noise throughout the summer, but you obviously lost one of your teammates in the summer as well, the emotion of that.
07:01Does that kind of put things into perspective of what's really important in life?
07:04Yeah, you know, the most difficult thing we'll ever go through.
07:09Such a surprise, such a shock, devastating for his family, first and foremost, but obviously devastating for us as a group of lads.
07:20And, yeah, you know, obviously football, you know, I don't think anyone could care less about football when things like that happen.
07:28It puts life into perspective as to what's important, you know, spending time with your family, spending time with your kids, because you never know what's around the corner.
07:38But, yeah, it's the toughest thing, like I said, we'll ever be through.
07:41Losing one of your closest mates, for me, was hugely difficult.
07:46And, yeah, it's something we'll probably never get over, but it's just something that we have to carry with us.
07:53We have to carry the memories we've got with us, and as long as we continue to do that, then he'll always be in our thoughts, he'll always be in our hearts, and, yeah, that's all we can do.
08:04Did that almost influence your decision, Andy, because you start to realise what's important in life?
08:10Yeah, it didn't influence my decision. The decision was already made before, obviously, the strategy. But I knew then, in that moment, I knew that the club needed me in that moment as well.
08:28I know I'm one of the leaders in the team. I've obviously been made vice-captain now, and, you know, it's going to take a lot this season.
08:35I know football was irrelevant, but we take football out of it, even as lads in the change room, we're all going to need help during the season.
08:42We've already had difficult moments in terms of first time in front of fans, you know, having to go to your teammates' funeral, which is absolutely madness to even say, and everything else that followed after it.
08:55So, you know, I know the leaders in that change room have got a big job to do this season in terms of trying to help everyone as a club and, you know, even Diogo's family through this, you know, massively difficult moment.
09:09And it won't get easier, but, you know, maybe we can numb the pain a little bit as time goes on, and it's up to us leaders to try and guide us through that.
09:19You've obviously had a stellar career, won just about everything. How much would getting into a World Cup, a Scotland captain feel that you just kind of talked everything off?
09:28Yeah, you know, obviously I'm 31 now, I'm not getting any younger. You know, you don't know where your career is going to go.
09:35So, I'm looking at this one, you know, hopefully it's not my last, but potentially, you know, obviously the next World Cup campaign I'll be 36.
09:44I've got no doubt that all of you have written me off by that point and probably other people will have written me off as well.
09:50But, no, look, obviously I've been through World Cup campaigns already and I've came close and I've not quite managed it.
09:57And if I look back on my career, I've achieved a hell of a lot, a lot of stuff that I'm really proud of.
10:03But, you know, it's one thing that's clearly missing and it would be amazing to do that.
10:09Obviously, I'm in an era that, you know, I remember the 1998 World Cup briefly. I was only four, four and a bit.
10:16And, you know, that was obviously the last time we were there. And it's something that we want to provide for the Tatar Army.
10:21We want to provide for ourselves. We want to be involved in it because it's the pinnacle of your career.
10:27And, you know, we've obviously got another chance to now do that. And, you know, if we can do it, then, you know, there won't be anyone more prouder and more excited for a World Cup than me.
10:36Andy Ciaran's obviously had to pull out the score. He's been an important player for Scotland at times.
10:42Are you hopeful that he'll come back? And he's obviously been struggling for 90 minutes this season so far.
10:47Is he still a player with a big future for Scotland?
10:49Yeah, 100 per cent, Katie. He's a fantastic player, fantastic character in the change room as well.
10:55And I think it was just, you know, it was just unfortunate. You know, he's obviously shown up to camp.
11:01He's had a scan and, unfortunately, the scan had ruled him out both games, which is hugely disappointing first and foremost for him.
11:10But for us as well, you know, he's a fantastic player. You know, like I said, a fantastic person as well, which has really grown into, I think, really grown into the squad.
11:19He obviously came in really young and took time to find his feet. And now he's really grown to, you know, a massive member of our team.
11:27So it's like, it's great to see him back at Celtic. It's great to play, seeing him playing week in, week out.
11:33And I think now the next step for Katie is just to try and, you know, play 90 minutes. And he knows that.
11:37But I think they're getting closer to that in terms of every game. He's probably playing a bit more and more minutes.
11:42And look, I think this one, as far as I'm aware, is a contact injury. So it's not as if he's had a knock back in any terms of that.
11:48So as a contact injury, what can happen to any of us, especially he's been in Kazakhstan.
11:54He's then played an old fun game, which we know how, you know, tasty day games can be.
11:58And yeah, it's just unfortunate timing for us. But, you know, I don't think it will set back Katie too long.
12:04And, you know, hopefully come October, he'll be back in the Scotland jersey.
12:08Andy, talking about this potentially being the guys getting older on the squad, potentially this could be the manager's last campaign.
12:14You know, the way things are going for him. Can you talk to us a little bit about the job he's done and the time that he's been the manager?
12:19And I'm wondering if that gives you guys extra motivation that potentially this could be Steve's last campaign.
12:24Yeah, I think, yeah, look, as it stands, it is because of, you know, obviously contract situation.
12:29And, you know, obviously we don't, we don't know our situation because it depends on how we're still performing at 36, 37.
12:36But, you know, obviously his is a contract and whatever happens in the future, we don't know.
12:41But he's been unbelievable. He's been unbelievable for Scotland.
12:45He's helped us massively to achieve our dreams because when he took over, we hadn't been to a tournament since 1998, never mind, you know, a World Cup.
12:54It was, you know, we hadn't never been to Euros and now we've been to two.
12:57We've gained experience at that. We've had so many highs.
13:00Okay, we've had some lows, but I think that's part and parcel of it.
13:03So without him, none of that would have been possible.
13:06We wouldn't have been able to achieve our dreams of playing at a major tournament with the country.
13:10And, you know, I'm obviously, you know, I'll be forever grateful for him.
13:15When I'd kind of, I was captain, obviously, before he came in, but he's really helped me, you know, be able to achieve the dream of being captain at a major tournament.
13:25And also captain my country in massive games, you know, and even qualifying campaigns and being able to achieve good results.
13:31So he's been great. And, you know, if it is his last World Cup campaign, then, of course, it's extra motivation for us.
13:37And if it is going to be, you know, some of our, you know, some of the mainstays are getting a bit older.
13:41And if it's going to be our last World Cup campaign, then, you know, there's motivation as well.
13:45But I think when you cross the white lines, it's just the motivation of getting to World Cup is enough.
13:50And I think we're just excited and ambitious to try and get to World Cup as a collective.
13:56And I think that's motivation enough.
13:58As you're sitting here right now, Andy, what is it that gives you the main confidence that we can actually do it, you guys can do it?
14:03I just believe we've got a lot of quality within the squad.
14:06I look at, first of all, I look at the squad on paper.
14:10When it comes out, you look at it and you look at the teams next to the names and, you know, we've got so many players playing at such a good level.
14:18And then it's all about because that's one thing.
14:20And then the next thing is bringing it all together and trying to play together as a team.
14:25And I think we've shown that at times that we can be a fantastic team when we do the right things and we do the basics and we do it properly.
14:32And I think more often than not, we've done that.
14:34So I believe if we do that, then we can cause any team problems.
14:37Now, whether it's enough to win the group is yet to be seen.
14:40Whether it's enough to finish second, like I said, for a playoff is yet to be seen.
14:44But we do believe that going into all these games, we've got a chance to win.
14:47And if we don't win, we've got a chance to draw.
14:49And that is what you need going into these campaigns.
14:52And if we can do that, then let's see where we are mid-November when the campaign's over and see where we're sat in that table.
14:58And, you know, hopefully we've either qualified or hopefully we've still got a chance to qualify.
15:03Andy, the manager's not willing to call upon Ben as often as he would have liked.
15:07But we've got him now and he's now got the move to Bournemouth.
15:10He's a player you know very well, seeing him at close proximity.
15:13Do you think he could be the X factor that we've been needing to get to a World Cup?
15:19No, because I don't want to put pressure on him.
15:23I think I've watched Dokey grow from a boy, I wouldn't quite say he's a man yet, but he's certainly on his way.
15:30But no, look, obviously, he came to Liverpool really, really young.
15:35I've seen him grow as a player in particular.
15:37He's matured a lot.
15:38You know, when he first came, he was just head down, dribble, dribble, dribble, dribble, dribble, dribble,
15:44sometimes give it away, sometimes be successful.
15:46Now he's getting a lot better at when to pass, when to dribble, when to take your man on,
15:50when to, you know, maybe use your full back or whatever.
15:53So I think he's slowly but surely getting to become the, you know, the full package.
15:59And I think his move to Bournemouth will help that.
16:01Hopefully he gets, you know, regular game time at a really good club, which, you know, is doing really well.
16:06And I'm quite happy that I can, you know, pass my guidance now on to Ryan Christie and he can look after him.
16:13But, yeah, he's a fantastic player, Dokey.
16:16I love him. I love watching him.
16:18He's one of the players that gets the fans off their seat.
16:21He's exciting and, yeah, it's great to have him in the squad.
16:25It's great to have his ability and his technique and everything,
16:28his excitement for the game and the squad.
16:30And, you know, hopefully he can play a big part.
16:32But like I said, I don't want to put too much pressure on him.

16:58Steve, just how much are the whole squad looking forward to the start of a World Cup qualifying campaign?
17:03Well, if the training this week's any guide, then, yeah, they're looking forward to it very much.
17:08Training's been good, sharp, very focused.
17:10So, no, we look forward to it.
17:12What gives you the confidence that Scotland can qualify this time?
17:17Eh, I think the previous couple of qualifying campaigns have shown that we can come out of the group stages,
17:24be that to the play-off or direct, as we did the last time, to get to Germany.
17:29We've shown that we can handle the pressure of the group stages, and hopefully that's what we aim to do this time again.
17:36Is there any extra motivation for you because you've done the Euros, it's a case of trying to get to the World Cup, and as things stand, this is your last campaign?
17:45No, nothing extra. My job is to try and give the boys the best possible chance to get there, so I'll just concentrate on going from game to game,
17:54and hopefully when we get to the end of the group stages, we've got enough points to go to the World Cup.
17:59How tough a start will this one be?
18:01Yeah, it's tough. Two difficult away games. Obviously coming here, we were here, the last World Cup qualifying.
18:08We know it's a tough place to come. They always play well at home, the Danish team.
18:14Very aggressive, get after you. So we know we have to defend well, but we also know we have to play well.
18:20We have the ball, we have to play, we have to try and create chances, and hopefully we can come away with a nice positive result to start the campaign.
18:26Speaking to Andy Robertson there, obviously it's a truncated qualification process, it's very quick.
18:31Do you feel, given that then, there's no real margin for error, or will it be a group where everyone will take points off everyone else?
18:37I think it could be a very competitive group, but listen, that's trying to look into the future.
18:43You don't know. All we can do is concentrate on making sure that we're ready for every single game as we approach them,
18:48get the approach right, and go to the games, give everything we've got, and hopefully get the points tally that takes us to America.
18:57A couple of injuries, how big a blow is that, not having Kieran and Anthony Ralston here?
19:01Yeah, always disappointing. Listen, you pick your squad, you know that, I think I've learned over the last six and a bit of years,
19:08you're always going to lose one or two, so to lose two full backs was disappointing, but we have enough cover in the squad.
19:15Does that have an impact on how you think about setting up? I know you've switched between different formations.
19:20Does that change or impact that in any way?
19:23No, it doesn't, because if you look at the squad that I picked, there's plenty of defensive cover there.
19:28We obviously qualified for the Euros, Steve. I just wonder, when you started at the beginning of that campaign,
19:33do you have the same feeling this time round with the players you have and the environment you've got,
19:37that this can be a special one?
19:39Well, I've got a lot of the same players. I've also freshened up with some younger ones.
19:43The younger ones always come in and lift the mood around the place.
19:47The more senior players enjoy it when they get challenged a little bit for their places.
19:52So, no, the group's in a good place.
19:55I just wondered if you would compare the groups to the sort of evolution that the squad is at now.
20:00He likes the Bendoken there. Do you see that? How do you compare the Euros squad that made it to this one?
20:07Probably similar, aren't you? The younger ones were coming through at that time.
20:11Your Gilmores, your Paterson, Hickey, they were coming through.
20:16Ferguson, obviously Lewis missed out with the injury, but that was your little young group that was coming through there now in the squad.
20:23It's a little bit more established, so hopefully the young group that I've got just now can learn and be a big part of the squad moving forward.
20:33In terms of goalkeepers, Steve, is that a big decision you've got to make? And if so, what's going to influence it in terms of guys that are not playing very much?
20:46Just watch them in training. I'll be guided by Chris. Chris was my goalkeeping coach.
20:51We know what they can all do. That's the three goalkeepers that took to the Euros, so we've worked very closely over a number of matches and a number of international camps.
21:01I'm pretty clear for what I'm going to do with the goalkeepers.
21:04We spoke to you before about your own situation. I think you said previously that you were 75% certain that this was going to be your last campaign.
21:12Is that still the case? Or have you had conversations about this is going to be the last campaign?
21:17I haven't thought about myself. I'm only concentrating on making sure that the boys are as well prepared as they can be and then we'll see what happens after the campaign.
21:25Some of the players, Steve, have said some nice things about this, about the fact that all the work that they've done with you over these years
21:33and the fact that if this is the last one, they want to do it for you. Is that quite a touching thing to hear the players saying that?
21:40It's nice to be light. That's not always the case in this job. Sometimes it doesn't feel like that.
21:48No, listen, I've got a great relationship with my players, especially the players that have been with me for the whole campaign, or my campaign, just over six years now.
21:58I've got a good relationship with them all. I think we've worked really hard at building a good spirit among ourselves.
22:05We're very determined to be successful again for the country in this tournament and hopefully we can do that.
22:13What they've also mentioned is because of the different sort of condensed nature of this qualifying campaign, they need to get off to a good start.
22:21They need to come out the traps and they were expecting, I think, to hear you stating that quite clearly to them over the build up to this game.
22:29Does it feel different because it is over the course of three double-headers just a couple of months?
22:35Not really, to be honest, because you know you have to start well anyway.
22:39You always have to get as many points as you can, but it's not to say that you can't have a slow start and still qualify.
22:44I think we had a slow start for coming back. Not the last campaign, the campaign before.
22:51We had a slow start and we still managed to come through at the end of it.
22:56We'll just do what we can and, like I say, you always try to keep the big picture at the end of November.
23:03How many points have we got and is that enough to take us to the World Cup?
23:06Obviously you want to win tomorrow night, Steve, but I think a point would be regarded as a really solid result and start given it's here.
23:18I think over the two games, we play to win both games and then we see what we get.
23:24I don't think we're going to come here and set up for a draw because I think if you do that and you encourage the Danish team to come at you and come at you like they did three years ago now, when we were here last,
23:35it can be a very long night because they're a team that asks you to defend a lot.
23:39The team that wants to put the ball in the box and they're a team with top quality players.
23:43So if we sit back and try to think that we're going to come here and nick a draw, I think that would be a thing we're thinking.
23:49I mean, one of the strongest performances of your team was probably the home victory over Denmark.
23:54Do you draw on that at all or mention that at all to the players?
23:58No, I think we just mentioned the fact that when we've been away from home recently, we've always been very competitive.
24:04We haven't won all the games, but we've found some decent away results.
24:07We've shown that we can travel and be a force and that's what we aim to do.
24:12Obviously, you lost Kieran, but does that clarify the defensive shape or the selection at the back at all?
24:19It was clear in my head before I got to the camp.
24:25It was a torrid night here last time you were here, Steve, in the opening 15 minutes.
24:30I think we're 2-0 down.
24:31But do recent wins in places like Warsaw and Athens give you hope that something special can happen here tomorrow night?
24:38Yeah, that's what I'm saying.
24:40Our recent away performances have been decent.
24:42Even going away to Portugal, we lost a goal in the last minute to lose that one.
24:47The game against Spain and Seville, we were right in the game up until the very end.
24:51So we know if we get our performance right that we can come here and be very competitive.
24:57You mentioned at the start, Steve, about the players, how they've been training this week.
25:01Does that give you any sense of how they are going to play?
25:04Do you sense that they're up for it, essentially?
25:08They're definitely up for it.
25:10I think over my years, my experience in football is sometimes not to read too much
25:14because sometimes a team is flying during the week and then they forget to turn up at the weekend.
25:18So I think you expect them to be as excited as they are about the campaign.
25:26You expect them to come in and train and work as hard as they can
25:29because it's not every year but it takes a long time to get to a World Cup qualifying campaign.
25:40It seems a hell of a long time since we lost that play-off game to Ukraine.
25:43So all the boys that were here remember that night and they want to make amends for that.
25:47I'd imagine though it's better to see them like you've seen them this week than the opposite, you know?
25:52I've seen them be pretty rubbish in training and turn up and play alright.
25:57So, like I say, sometimes you try to read too much into everything.
26:02It's better just to try and keep the middle ground.
26:05I was going to ask you as well about young Doak, does that give you a different dimension to the team
26:09in terms of what he gives you? You could have missed him when he wasn't there?
26:12Immediately, he gives you a different dimension because he's quick, direct and likes to get out of the opposition.
26:17So that's the type of player that we've maybe been missing a little bit
26:21and we certainly missed Ben when he was out injured.
26:23It's nice to have him back and hopefully he can have a big impact over the next six games.
26:30Steve, you mentioned the goalkeeper issue earlier.
26:34How important is it for a goalkeeper to be playing regularly? Only one of the three in the squad is doing that just now.
26:41Obviously, it's helpful if you're playing week in, week out at your club and you're playing well.
26:46So, we haven't got everybody playing at the moment.
26:49It's not such a big issue because they'll have minutes pre-season.
26:52They've all had minutes over the course of pre-season.
26:55So, it's not such a big issue in this camp but maybe later in the year as they don't play.
26:59It's also one of the positions that is very particular because only one plays.
27:05There's only one goalkeeper.
27:07They're very used to being the number two at certain stages of their career.
27:11so they know that they have to work hard, train well and be ready for the opportunity if they're given that.
