00:00Mr. President, this is a photograph of the alien from the movie Alien.
00:15This is what you could end up looking like if you eat some of the raw frozen shrimp
00:27being sent to the United States by other countries.
00:32Now, let me tell you what I'm talking about.
00:34In late August, the FDA found that raw frozen shrimp from Indonesia was being sold in Walmart,
00:52specifically in Walmart stores in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana,
01:04Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, and West Virginia,
01:12who was being sold under the Walmart label called the Great Value Label.
01:19If you eat it, how could you end up looking like the alien in the alien?
01:29Because the shrimp was radioactive.
01:33I kid you not.
01:35It had a radioactive isotope in it called cesium-137.
01:42It will kill you.
01:46Even if it doesn't turn you into the alien if you eat this stuff,
01:50I guarantee you'll grow an extra ear.
01:55That was bad enough.
01:57Obviously, the FDA issued a recall.
02:00A few days later, it happened again.
02:03The FDA and NOAA, which I'll talk about in a second,
02:09found that there were 26,460 packages of shrimp cocktail
02:17and 18,000 bags of frozen cooked shrimp being sold,
02:26once again at Walmart and at Kroger's throughout the United States,
02:33containing the same radioactive isotope.
02:38How could this happen in America?
02:41This is unconscionable.
02:43I'll tell you how.
02:45Because that shrimp, that shrimp from other countries,
02:50which don't abide by the same rules that we abide by in America,
02:57which if you eat it, will turn you,
02:59it may turn you into the alien that at a minimum
03:02will cause you to grow an extra ear,
03:06it's not being inspected.
03:09It's supposed to be.
03:11It's supposed to be inspected by the National Oceanic
03:14and Atmospheric Administration.
03:17We call it NOAA as part of the Department of Commerce.
03:21And yes, they're inspecting some of it,
03:24about 1%.
03:25On a good day, 2%.
03:28The United Kingdom inspects 50%
03:32of the foreign seafood coming into its nation.
03:36Even China does a better job
03:39than the United States of America.
03:41This is unconscionable, Mr. President.
03:44There is no excuse for it.
03:47There is no excuse for it.
03:49This shrimp, and I'm not just picking on Indonesia,
03:52it's other countries.
03:55This shrimp is grown in conditions
03:57that you can't possibly imagine.
04:01Dirty water.
04:04They shoot the shrimp full of antibiotics.
04:07I confess, I didn't know they were shooting them
04:11full of this radioactive isotope.
04:14But the normal antibiotics
04:17that they put in these foreign shrimp
04:20are bad enough.
04:23If you eat enough of the foreign shrimp,
04:26you become resistant
04:27to certain bacteria here in America
04:33because the antibiotics don't work on it anymore
04:36because you've eaten so many shrimp
04:40that contains the antibiotics.
04:43This is unconscionable,
04:44and it should not be happening
04:45in the United States of America.
04:47Now, I'm biased.
04:50I believe in home-grown Louisiana shrimp.
04:54Fresh.
04:55Out of the Gulf.
04:57Not radioactive.
05:02But I understand
05:03that some stores
05:06prefer to buy foreign shrimp
05:08because it's cheaper.
05:09Now we know why.
05:11The damn stuff's radioactive.
05:13And NOAA needs to do a better job
05:16of inspecting the shrimp
05:18that is sold from other countries
05:21who don't abide by the same standards we do
05:24to the consumers
05:25in the United States of America.
