00:00We love each song that we do. We do it with the same amount of passion, with the same amount of dedication, which we do other songs, but it so happens that certain songs become more popular than the others.
00:30I started learning when I was very young, say when I was around 6-7 years old. I started playing the Birna and at the same time started learning music. Because I think I had a natural inclination towards music. So that's the first thing I did, learned. I'm still learning.
00:51How did Breathless take off from there?
00:54Breathless, I was anyway in the advertising industry doing a lot of ads and I had branched off from my professional career, which was at that time a computer science engineer.
01:07I was doing a lot of television commercials and some shows here and there and seeing a few film shows.
01:14And HMB actually approached me and along with Javed Saab to do an album. So the moment they said I have to work with Javed Saab, I was very excited that I said, okay, this is the time I should do an album.
01:27And we started working on it. And this was an idea which was there in his head. A song that should just, you know, kind of move like seamlessly like the waves of the sea or things like that, you know, which just start and end and does not have any music interludes or no mukhra, it doesn't have a form, should form strange parabolas.
01:51So, we caught on that idea and started developing it and a lot of work on that words-wise, singing-wise, composition-wise, arrangement-wise.
02:01What sort of camp was, man, and then finally, Breathless took place.
02:04There were a couple of lines from Breathless.
02:07Yeah.
02:08Koi jo mila to mujhe aisa lagta tha jaisa meri sari duniya me gitaun ki rungon ki bharaka hai khushruppu ki aandhi hai.
02:15And it goes on and on.
02:17So how did films start then?
02:19Films, I think, I guess, a lot of people heard the album Breathless and were very, very impressed by the kind of music I did because I was also the music composer of that album Arrangered and it was like a one-man show.
02:32And in the meantime, I was also working with two of my friends, Ehsan and Loy, who were very prominent music producers in the advertising industry.
02:42And we were working with a very great director Mukul Anand together for a film for Pepsi.
02:47While we were working, we were very good friends with him also and we had a lovely vibe.
02:53So he actually suggested, why don't you do music for films?
02:56We said, we get a chance.
02:58So he offered us the first film DAS to do music.
03:01And the song, as you know,
03:03You know,
03:08That became a huge hit and since, you know, we work beautifully together, we have a lovely vibe about the whole thing and we are lovely friends.
03:16And it's a fantastic experience working with these people.
03:20So we decided to stick together as a team, that is Ehsan, Loy and Shankar Madiwar, for films.
03:27How did you team up together?
03:29That's what Mukul Anand, he gave us the first.
03:31We were anyway working for a television commercial together.
03:35And he said, why don't you just do a film?
03:37So we said, okay, let's team up together and try out what we can do.
03:40We were not, it was not like a very conscious decision or a very serious contract signing ceremony or something like that.
03:48We just said, let's do films together.
03:50And we did the first film and the song became a huge hit.
03:53And then there was no looking back obvious.
03:56Couple of lines from that song.
03:58How was the rise to Mission Kashmir after that?
04:23We did quite a few films after that.
04:26Like, Shool, the song, My Aayi Ho You PBR Loot Nei.
04:31That became a huge hit, you know, even in the Inkiras and all that.
04:34Then we did a few songs in the film, Dil Lagi.
04:36But unfortunately, the film didn't do well.
04:38But the title song of that film became very popular.
04:42And then Vinod Chopra approached us to do Mission Kashmir well.
04:47He had heard the stuff we had done for Das and these other films.
04:50And he'd also heard Breathless and he was looking out for a very fresh sound.
04:54Because the kind of film he was doing was a very different kind of film,
04:57wherein he needed a lot of Kashmiri influence, a lot of world music influence kind of a thing.
05:02So he approached us and there was one song in the film called Dhuwa Dhuwa,
05:07which he apparently had given to at least five to six music composers,
05:12just to see whether what kind of a feel he's looking for he gets from any of them.
05:18And by God's grace, he loved the composition that we gave him for Dhuwa Dhuwa.
05:23And he chose us as music directors.
05:26That's how Mission Kashmir had.
05:28Harin, Dil Chahta Hai?
05:30Dil Chahta Hai is an extension of, you know, a long relationship that I've been having with Farhan.
05:36Because Farhan Akhtar did my first video. That was his first job and that was my first video.
05:41That is Breathless. And that became a huge hit.
05:44And he was very keen that, you know, he was writing this film and he came and he met us and he narrated the script.
05:52The moment we heard it, we just jumped to it.
05:54We said, we have to do the film score because it was such a lovely film and such a lovely script.
05:59And as it is, we were, we had a lovely working relationship right from, you know, the same breathless happened.
06:06So we got together, we jammed a little bit.
06:09We went to Khandala, wrote some songs and it seemed to work.
06:13And the movie happened and you know what I hit it was.

06:23When we were, we cannot stay every day in the day for the rest of our friends.

07:06Up to date, what's been your favourite? I mean your personal favourite?
07:10Or the ones you've signed?
07:11Very difficult. Very difficult to say that because we love each song that we do.
07:16We do it with the same amount of passion, with the same amount of dedication, which we do other songs.
07:20But it so happens that certain songs become more popular than the others.
07:24For example, if you see Mission Kashmir, Bumaro and Dinh Poshmal became the hot favourite of the public.
07:31But what we like from that film is maybe the lori or maybe dhuwa dhuwa, which maybe the aam jantha won't like it.
07:38Similarly in Dil chahta also there are some songs like Kaizi Hai Arut or Tanhai is some of our favourite songs.
07:45But Dil chahta the title became very popular or Kohi Kahe became very popular.
07:49So each one of the songs are our babies so we have to like each one of them.
07:54We have to love each one of them.
07:56What's forthcoming now?
07:58We're doing quite a few films now.
08:00We signed up with, we are finishing Ramesh Siprisav's film.
08:04Which is Kuchna Kaho, which is a huge project.
08:06Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai.
08:08Then you've signed up with Honey Rani for our next film.
08:13Then Farhan's next film we'll be doing.
08:15Then we're doing a film with Mamuti and Rabina called Shafak.
08:20I'm doing my second album after Breathless.
08:24I'm doing a lot of world music concerts, touring around all over the world.
