00:00I'm Rear Admiral Thomas M. Dyke, as retired.
00:29Glad to have you aboard as we bring you another true story of the silent service.
00:35This is the account of what happened when the USS Crivali was ordered to the island of Negros in the Philippines to pick up a strange cargo for a submarine.
00:45The Crivali cautiously worked her way towards her rendezvous.
00:59And made herself ready to handle any emergency.
01:15That's something!
01:29there's something in your voice though I thought I saw a flickering of trees for
01:47just a second it's gone now look here too long three short too long that's a signal all right yeah
02:07but who's sending it the refugees or the Japanese I certainly wouldn't put it past them to use those
02:13women and children as decoys left five degrees rudder

02:26we'll find out pretty quick if there's a reception committee waiting for us
02:38I'll feel better when we get out of here we're sitting ducks if they're using those
02:44refugees as decoys we haven't got enough water under us to die if we wanted to

07:15yeah
07:19Let's go to the water, how are we going to get out of the water?
07:22Pong kong makato.
07:28Why don't you and your sister help this nice man make up the bunk?
07:32Okay, let's go to the room.
07:34What's the matter?
07:37I did not want to leave my Manuel behind on Negros.
07:42We shall never see him again.
07:45Of course you will.
07:47None of us wanted to leave our husbands, but now you know just as well as I do that
07:53with them fighting we just be a burden and a constant worry to them.
08:00I'm sorry.
08:02I did not mean to add to your trouble.
08:06You too had to leave your man.
08:10All any of us can do is help these brave men who have come to our rescue just as much as we can.
08:16Are you going to be all right?
08:30Hey Sandy, what in the world are you doing?
08:32What in the world are you doing?
08:33Oh honey, it's one thing to leave the refrigerator door wide open back at the mission, but it's another thing to fool around with things on the submarine.
08:41I just wanted to...
08:42I know honey, but leave things alone.
08:45Understand?
08:47Yes ma'am.
08:48Go.
08:49You should be right and we'll go for it.
08:50I think we'll go for it.
08:51Just go for it.
08:52Go for it.
08:53Come and see.
08:54Go for it.
08:57You should be.
08:58All right.
09:00Let's go.
09:04Go for it.
09:05Yeah.
09:06I hope for you.
09:07How?
09:08How many people have done?
09:09Right in there.
09:23Uh, Mrs. Tallachman, uh, try it, uh, sideways.
09:34There is no sideways, Mr. Elmo.
09:36Uh, hey, Ben, uh, bring some lunch to the chief's quarters for Mrs. Tallachman.
09:43Sure.
10:00Disregard diving bar. Disregard.
10:02If I catch you fooling around with just one more thing, I'm going to warm the seat of your pants for you.
10:08Keep your paws to yourself.
10:10I'm sorry, Chief.
10:17The Crivali continued her journey with her strange cargo.
10:20And then Goldilocks tasted the big bear's porridge, and it was too hot.
10:31Then she tasted the middle-sized bear's porridge, and it was too cold.
10:36Antonio said you were sackcloth. Are you really?
10:39No, not really.
10:42Oh, come on now. Do you want to hear the rest of the story or not?
10:44Oh, yeah.
10:46Okay.
10:47Then she tasted the little bear's bowl of porridge, and it was just right, and she ate it all up.
11:00You'd never believe that Walt Mazzoni was intercollegiate light heavyweight boxing champ, would you?
11:04Well, he certainly has a way with children.
11:07Well, you've done more than anyone else, Mrs. Stewart.
11:10I know we've got you to thank for handling those women.
11:12Well, I saw the panic they were in when they came aboard.
11:15Well, I just did what I could to give them courage, Captain.
11:19Although I didn't believe a single word of what I was telling them.
11:23Maybe I was trying to bolster my own faith when...
11:27told them all those lies about how sure I was they'd see their husbands again.
11:30Some day, when America's won the war.
11:36Do you mean to say you doubt that we will?
11:39Why shouldn't I?
11:41Until you appeared, we hadn't seen an American ship or an American plane or an American soldier.
11:47Except as a prisoner.
11:50For months, the only news we've had has been over the radio from the Japanese,
11:54telling us about their glorious victories,
11:57and that the Americans are a beaten people.
12:00Well, that's really what you think?
12:05Look, Mrs. Stewart, we listen to the enemy's radio, too, but mostly for laughs.
12:11Well, I'm not denying that we didn't take a murderous beating at Pearl Harbor and for months after that.
12:15But now we're on the way back.
12:17It's a long road and a mighty tough one.
12:19But we'll win in the end.
12:21Are you sure you're not trying to convince yourself, Captain?
12:27Well, you've seen the Cavalli's officers and crew.
12:30Did they look to you like beaten men?
12:33Here, here! Stop that!
12:37Get off of that torpedo and stay off, you hear?
12:39All right. What's that kid's name?
12:42Vicente. Vicente Cariba.
12:45Vicente! Over here! On the double!
12:49Watch me, Captain!
12:51You're Vicente Cariba, aren't you?
12:53Yes, sir.
12:54Well, my information is that you're pretty much a leader among the younger group.
12:57So I've decided to make your position official.
12:59I'm appointing you Assistant Chief Petty Officer.
13:02You're in charge of all the kids.
13:04You see to it they keep an order.
13:06Yes, sir!
13:07Very sound psychology, Captain.
13:14I've got two of my own back home in Cincinnati.
13:16They taught me the hard way.
13:18Captain, it's Mrs. Tallick-Bahn. What'll I do?
13:21I'd better get her to my room and check up on your medical man.
13:24Captain, can I help?
13:25I did have some experience back in the mission.
13:27We'd be very grateful.
13:29Come on, Elmo.
13:30Gosh, why couldn't she wait just four more days?
13:32We'll be in Darwin then.
13:33Come on, Elmo.
13:37Sheep?
13:41Yeah?
13:42Can you help me put this sign up?
13:43I can't reach that guy.
13:45Ah, shoot.
13:47There we are.
13:49Nothing.
13:54Can't you read?
13:55No.
13:56Well, I'll tell you what it says.
13:57Any child who passes this sign will have his ears cut off.
14:05Mama, Mama, they're going to cut our ears off!
14:08Who said so?
14:09By order of Assistant Chief Petty Officer, Cariba.
14:12How is she?
14:21False alarm.
14:22She's fine.
14:23Good.
14:24You'd better leave her in my room.
14:25She'll be more comfortable.
14:26All right, I'll tell her.
14:31You know, Captain,
14:32when the Navy made up the medical manual for submarines,
14:35I don't think they planned on having women aboard.
14:36Well, there it is, Bill.
14:52Maluka Passage.
14:53Now it's a straight run south to Darwin.
14:56It looked that way, sir.
14:59Unless message came from the Albacore.
15:01Albacore reports large enemy merchant convoy,
15:05heavily escorted, course 240,
15:07estimated speed 12 knots.
15:10Convoy should pass northern end to Maluka Passage
15:12in about one hour
15:13if same course and speed are maintained.
15:16Albacore unable to get into position
15:17for an attack on target.
15:21We're the only ship in this area
15:22with a chance at the target.
15:24Yes, sir.
15:26And 42 women and children aboard, sir.
15:31And then Goldilocks got into the little bed.
15:33And it felt so comfortable,
15:35she pulled the covers up
15:36and fell fast asleep.
15:39And by this time,
15:40the bears decided to come home.
15:42For breakfast!
15:43That's right.
15:44And by this time,
15:45the bears decided to come home for breakfast.
15:48And then they walked,
15:49all three of them.
15:49The great big bear walked through the door
15:51and he walked over the table
15:52and he says,
15:53in his big, deep voice,
15:55somebody's been eating my porridge.
15:58Then the middle-sized bear
15:59and the middle-sized boys
16:00walked over the table
16:00and says,
16:01and somebody's been eating my porridge.
16:04And then the little baby bear
16:05came in and looked at the table
16:07and looked at her bowl
16:07and says,
16:08and somebody's been eating my porridge
16:10and ate it all up.
16:14Captain Walker?
16:16Yes?
16:17You want to see me?
16:20I need your help.
16:21Oh?
16:22We just received a message
16:23from a fellow submarine,
16:24the Albacore,
16:25that very shortly,
16:26in less than half an hour,
16:28we should sight a very important enemy target.
16:31Very large merchant convoy.
16:32Well, I don't see what this has to do with me.
16:35Well, this hasn't been an easy decision to make,
16:36Mrs. Stewart.
16:37Under ordinary circumstances,
16:39even though I only have two torpedoes left,
16:41there wouldn't be any hesitation
16:42in striking it such a vital target.
16:44But with 42 women and children on board.
16:49Yes, I see.
16:50I suppose you have no choice but to attack.
16:56None.
17:00Your duty must be your only consideration, Captain.
17:02You see, Mrs. Stewart,
17:04if there was another submarine in a position
17:06to take a crack at this convoy,
17:08we'd be all right.
17:09But there isn't.
17:10So that leaves it up to the Cavalli.
17:13Well, what do you want me to do?
17:15Explain the situation to those women,
17:16tell them we're going into action,
17:18and why.
17:19And, uh,
17:21try to keep them as calm as possible.
17:24Our ship's company will have all they can do
17:25without handling a bunch of people in a panic.
17:28I'll do everything I can, Captain.
17:31Oh, and,
17:32I think I know a little
17:34of what making this decision has cost you.
17:38Radar's picked up another escort on the near flank.
17:50Range,
17:516-0-0-0.
17:54I'm going to dive now.
17:55Clear the bridge.
17:57Dive!
17:58Dive!
17:58Dive!
18:08Dive!
18:27None of them seem to be the least bit nervous.
18:29Well, this is our job, ma'am.
18:31The one we're trained for.
18:32All submariners are volunteers, you know.
18:36Chief?
18:37Yeah?
18:37What's the action station
18:38for Assistant Chief Petty Officer?
18:40Stand by to act as messenger if needed.
18:59Bearing mark.
19:012-5-0.
19:05Set.
19:05Fire!
19:18We got him a midships.
19:22This is the captain.
19:23First torpedo hit a tanker
19:24in a midships.
19:25Our second torpedo hit her stern.
19:37She's sinking.
19:44Take her down to 300 feet.
19:46The escort's got us spotted.
19:48Right full rudder.
19:49All ahead standard.
19:50ранperate.
19:51All passengers in the bunks.
19:52All right.
19:52Everybody in your bunks, quite.
19:53There's some depth charges.
19:55Let's get in here.
19:55Let's get in here.
19:56Oh
20:26The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.
20:32He maketh me to lie down in green pastures.
20:36He leadeth me beside the still water.
20:40He restoreth my soul.
20:50He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
20:56Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil.
21:01But thou art with me.
21:04Thy rod and thy staff, they come for me.
21:07Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies.
21:12Thou anointest my head with oil.
21:15My cup runneth over.
21:18Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life.
21:23And I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
21:28Amen.
21:30Thou, Thou.
21:43Elmo. Mrs. Stewart.
21:44Miss Tala Trail, I need you in the fi.
21:46Right away, hurry.
21:48Right away! Hurry!
21:50Thank you, Miss Eddy.
21:53Now get this, everybody.
21:55No yelling and no screaming.
21:57That's orders.
21:59We're hiding from the enemy.
22:03All's clear on the sound gear.
22:05Looks like we've lost them, Captain.
22:07Yeah, I want to wait a while longer, if sure.
22:12We need our new passengers.
22:14Just signed on.
22:15A born submarine.
22:17Hey, and you know what his name is?
22:18What?
22:19Elmo Walker Cravalli Talakban.
22:21Well, congratulations, Pop.
22:24Hey, he looks like you.
22:28Shh!
22:47At last, the Cravalli arrived at Darwin, Australia, carrying a happy bunch of people.
23:06Hey, wait a minute.
23:08Good to have had you aboard, Chief, and thanks for all your help.
23:12When I grow up, I'm going to enlist in the Navy, Chief.
23:15Thanks for the hat.
23:19Now, don't forget.
23:20You dust him off every day with talcum powder.
23:22Oh, I take good care of my son.
23:25Don't worry, Mr. Elmo.
23:27You very fine doctor.
23:30Bring me fine boy.
23:38Well, we made it.
23:40We certainly owe you many thanks.
23:42Oh, no.
23:43You're wrong, Captain.
23:44It's I who am indebted to you.
23:47Ever since we saw the Americans in action, like the men of the Cravalli,
23:51our doubts and fears have vanished.
23:54We're more convinced than ever that what you said is true.
23:58It may be a long road ahead, but the victory lies at the end of it.
24:02I'll be back in a moment with our special guest.
24:17And now it gives me great pleasure to introduce to you,
24:19Commander Walter Mazzoni,
24:21who was Torpedo and Gunnery Officer of the Cravalli
24:23on the mission you have just witnessed.
24:26That certainly must have been quite a cruise, Walt.
24:29It really was.
24:30I don't think anybody who was aboard the Cravalli
24:32will ever forget our floating nursery.
24:34I guess you found out there were some subjects
24:36that weren't taught at the submarine school.
24:38Well, our instructors always told us that we should be ready for any emergency.
24:42Anyway, all of us aboard the Cravalli were so very happy
24:44we were able to rescue the so many wives and children
24:48who might otherwise have fallen into enemy hands.
24:50I can only concur in the message you received from the boss.
24:54Well done, Cravalli.
24:56We hope you will be aboard again when we bring you another true adventure
25:02of the silent service.
25:04Ticker down, there's often life
25:09Through the deep blue underneath the ocean
25:14Will control the ocean's wide
25:17From down, down underneath the sea
25:22Take the force, we'll pass the world
25:26In the future's yet to be
25:30That we're safe, as one can send
25:34A submarine that's underneath the sea
25:39So wait for nine, and they're done
25:43Now we're down, down, underneath the ocean
25:47Fearless men will find redone
25:51In the deep blue underneath the sea
25:55Fearless men will find redone
