A broken propeller, an internal explosion and damaged instruments plague an outmoded American submarine assigned to attack Jap transports.
Transcript
00:00I'm Rear Admiral Thomas M. Dykus, retired.
00:28The story we are about to bring you is one of individual heroism and group strength of a submarine.
00:35It is the story of the United States submarine Cochino.
00:39As Commander Benitez, the submarine skipper, said in his report regarding his men,
00:46their reward, if they feel they need any, must be found in their own hearts,
00:51that when duty called, they were not found wanting.
00:58During August 1949, two of the Navy's latest snorkel-type subs, the USS Tusk and the USS Cochino,
01:08ordered to conduct cold-weather operations in Arctic waters.
01:13At 1700 on the 13th of August, 400 miles north of the Arctic Circle, the Cochino slid beneath the cold waters and deep into the icy sea.
01:24Upon submerging, the periscope lookouts were doubled, and experienced sonar men were put under listening gear.
01:30The boat proceeded under simulated combat conditions.
01:33For days, the Cochino conducted submerged operations, a snorkel-tube breathing air for the diesel engines and the men below.
01:41The Cochino's skipper was Lieutenant Commander R. C. Benitez of Groton, Connecticut.
01:47Our executive officer, Lieutenant Commander Richard M. Wright of San Francisco.
01:52The key man on board the Cochino was Electrician's mate First Class Oscar Martinez, who hailed from Pequonock Bridge, Connecticut.
02:01And Chief Pharmacist's mate Hubert Doc Eason of Gatesville, North Carolina.
02:07And Chief Pharmacist.
02:11Mama's letters still sound the same.
02:14Keep bundled up good.
02:15Don't go outside the boat without your heavy underwear.
02:18Your folks still live in Puerto Rico, Captain?
02:20Mm-hmm.
02:21She sends her love and prayers to you.
02:24Here.
02:26I sent you a medal of your patron saint.
02:29Had it blessed by the local priest.
02:33Thanks.
02:35I'll wear it.
02:36I'm afraid it's being hypocritical.
02:39Don't worry, Dick. I didn't tell her about you and religion.
02:41If I did, she'd probably order the Navy not to let me sail with you.
02:45I think I'll take a turn around the boat.
02:49I guess I've always figured wearing a medal is like the boxer blessing himself before the first round.
02:55Won't do any harm, but...
02:57It doesn't mean much if he can't punch.
03:06I'll take a further.
03:07I'll take a look.
03:08I'll take a look.
03:09It's this time, Captain.
03:11We have over 3% hydrogen.
03:12Rising.
03:13Captain, we have over 3% hydrogen. Rising.
03:36Hydrogen. Smoking lamps out.
03:39Fire and explosion in the after-battery. Short circuit.
03:41Sound the alarm.
03:43Aye, sir.
03:48Stand by to surface. I'll radio the tusk.
03:50Take over here, Dick. Keep me informed.
03:52Aye, aye, sir. We'll try to get some CO2 extinguishers in the burning compartments.
04:00Radio. As soon as we surface,
04:02inform the tusk fire and explosion in after-battery. Surface.
04:11Blow bow buoyancy. Blow forward group. Blow out.
04:22Secure bow buoyancy. Secure air.
04:26Stand by.
04:27Stand by.
04:29Stand by.

05:25Get all hands that are not needed top side.
05:27Keep after with the fire party.
05:28See if he can locate the trouble.
05:30Aye, aye, sir.
05:43Dock, bring all the injured men up on the bridge.
05:48Have Chief Roush ask the others to the rail around the sail.
05:50Aye, aye, sir.
05:59Captain, we're still generating hydrogen.
06:01The CO2 isn't helping.
06:02Captain, the battery room's still afire.
06:04Have you located the short?
06:06No, Martinez is getting ready to open the battery disconnect switches now.
06:09Got no time to talk, Captain.
06:10We'll have another explosion any minute.
06:12Very well.
06:13Notify the skipper.
06:28Minion and phone in the engine room.
06:29Get medical aid.
06:31Aye, sir.
06:31I'll get it.
06:31I have to appeal room.
06:32Right, I'll send Doc Eastman with aid right away.
06:52Keep after that short, Martinez.
06:53We've got to find it.
06:56Got to help those men below.
06:57Eason.
06:59You'll have to get back in the after feeder room.
07:01Well, Captain, it's pretty dangerous back there.
07:02The decks are a watch.
07:04Use the safety line.
07:05Think you can make it?
07:05I'll try, sir.
07:06Tell me.
07:23See you.
07:26Sir, I can't seem to find the trouble.
07:51Well, keep after it.
07:52We've got to find it before it blows us to bits.
07:56Captain, the radio's out.
08:00Can't get an answer from the Tusk.
08:02Let's hope she received our first message.
08:06Chief Roush, hurry and get everybody left.
08:08These are getting worse.
08:16Come on, sister.
08:17Hurry up and find us.
08:22Check this out for me, will you, Chief?
08:24Smarter, don't you trust me?
08:25You couldn't tie a sick dog to a fence without choking him to death.
08:28Maybe you're right.
08:29I guess my place isn't a galley.
08:31You could have fooled me.
08:33Why didn't I stay in Tennessee?
08:37Man overboard!
08:40Can't get a line to him, Captain.
08:41I'm going after him.
08:42Where are you going, Red?
08:51That's Joe Morgan.
08:52I ain't letting no commissary man get deep-sixed.
08:55I'd have to run that galley alone.
08:58Give me a lot, Jack.
08:58Mano-
09:03Mano-
09:09Mano-
09:11Mano-
09:11Mano-
09:12Mano-
09:14What's going on down there, Dick?
09:16We haven't located the shore yet, Captain.
09:18Okay, Dick, take it easy. We're not having a Caribbean pleasure cruise up here either.
09:22We'll keep you informed, sir.
09:24Very well.
09:31Thanks, Rick.
09:33I couldn't have made it without you.
09:35You... those donuts I ate for breakfast almost sunk me.
09:40I've got to pinpoint it.
09:43Where is it?
09:44Troubles between batteries three and four.
09:46What's causing the generation of hydrogen in the after battery roll?
09:57We've got to get in there and pull the disconnects.
09:59It's impossible now.
10:00It's burning too bad and we're bound to get another explosion soon.
10:03If we don't get to them quick, it'll be the end of the Cochino.
10:05Maybe so, but you can't get in there.
10:07Get me a rescue breathing apparatus.
10:10Mr. Wright, you'll never get out alive.
10:12Come on, come on, Martinez.
10:17Get me a safety line.
10:18You know the signals on the safety line?
10:20Yes, sir.
10:28All right, now move back.
10:29And don't come any further.
10:37Big, let's go.
10:38Big, let's go.
10:47Let's go, let's go.
10:49Big, let's go.
10:54Big, let's go.
11:00Okay, so we just finished our entire job.
11:01I don't know.
11:31Captain, fire in the forward engine room.
11:38I can't get to exec.
11:41I'm afraid he's gone.
11:51Captain, we've lost all power to the propellers.
11:54What about the exec?
11:55It's impossible to get to him, sir.
11:57The room's completely ablaze.
11:58Captain, there's a task.
11:59It's about zero to five.
12:03Get on the light signal while conditioned.
12:06We've got to get power.
12:07Not much chance of the Tusk getting alongside if we can't help.
12:09All right.
12:32All right.
12:32All right.
12:44Oh, my God! It's Mr. Ryan!
12:47Better get Doc Eastman. He's badly burned.
12:49Right.
12:58Get back. Back to your station.
13:02Forget about me. I'm through.
13:04You can't get on us now, sir.
13:06We'll never save this bucket without you.
13:09You're going to be okay.
13:12The ship's more important than me.
13:15Now, get back.
13:16You ain't giving the orders now, Mr. Wright.
13:19We're going to get you patched up.
13:21You can't spit out on me.
13:24I wouldn't feel right aboard the Cochino without you kneeling me every day for goofing off.
13:32Can you give me a shot, Doc, with the paint?
13:38I haven't got any morphine. I can't get to sickbay.
13:43What's happening topside?
13:46We're trying to get the Tusk alongside.
13:48We're signaling that we needed medical aid. She's trying to get a raft to us now.
13:53Why can't we get the Tusk alongside?
13:55No power. We're trying to find enough compressed air to start the engines.
14:02What are you waiting for?
14:04Go on, get going on it.
14:09Aye, aye, sir.
14:10Aye, aye, sir.
14:22She's got a raft in the water. They're sending over medical supplies.
14:29We can't make an approach unless we can turn into the seas.
14:31Maneuvering room. Any luck with the engines?
14:33Spahn's in the after-engine room lining up.
14:35We think we've got enough air. We'll try her in a few minutes.
14:38Stay with it, Martinez. We've got to help them.
14:41Don't worry, sir. If we don't help them,
14:43those ribbon clerks and the Tusk will be kneeling me until I retire.
14:47I ain't about to let that happen.
14:54We got the medical supplies from the Tusk, Captain.
14:56Get the below right away.
14:59I got number four engine running. Kick ahead.
15:01Captain, Spahn, in maneuvering. We're going ahead on one main engine.
15:05Ahead two thirds.
15:08Right 20 degrees runner.
15:10Right 20 degrees runner.
15:12Right 20 degrees runner.
15:14Signal the Tusk. Tell them to make another approach. We've got power again.
15:16Cutting towel is full of smoke, Captain.
15:17Roger.
15:18Can't steer, sir.
15:19Can you set the steering pump on your droop?
15:20I don't know, sir.
15:21What have I got to lose?
15:22We'll get to it.
15:23Contact the after-torpedo room. See if they can hook up a jury rig on the rudder.
15:24All right, sir.
15:25Tell the Tusk to stand off. We've lost steering.
15:26After-torpedo room. See if they can hook up a jury rig on the rudder.
15:27All right, sir.
15:28Tell the Tusk to stand off. We've lost steering.
15:29After-torpedo room. See if we can hook up a jury rig on the rudder.

15:33I don't know, sir.
15:34What have I got to lose?
15:35We'll get to it.
15:36Contact the after-torpedo room. See if they can hook up a jury rig on the rudder.
15:37All right, sir.
15:38Tell the Tusk to stand off. We've lost steering.
15:39After-torpedo room. See if we can hook up a jury rig on the rudder.
15:40Sir, they've lost steering forward. Conningtower's out.
15:41Sir, they've lost steering forward. Conningtower's out.
15:42We'll make a jury rig aft.
15:43Yes, sir.
15:44Now, listen carefully, Martinez. Get a screwdriver.
15:45Okay, sir.
15:46The Tusk to stand off. We've lost steering.
15:47After-torpedo room. See if we can hook up a jury rig on the rudder.
15:49Sir, they've lost steering forward. Conningtower's out.
15:51We'll make a jury rig aft.
15:52Yes, sir.
15:53Now, listen carefully, Martinez. Get a screwdriver.
15:57Position the control cylinder on the water very speed gear. It will drive your rudder rams.
16:03Aye, aye, sir. How are you feeling, sir?
16:07Like a frigaseed chicken.
16:10But much better since Doc gave me that last shot.
16:25Spread this ball bearing grease on me.
16:27Take it easy with my grease, saw bones. I will count to the old man.
16:32Why don't you take out of the bilge and take a bubble.
16:35Let me open the burglars and take a bubble bath.
16:39and take a bubble bath.
16:45How's the executive?
16:47He's very bad.
16:49I don't know how we're going to get him topside.
16:52That morphine's going to wear off pretty soon.
16:54He'll be in terrific pain.
16:56Martinez, get going with that control cylinder.
17:00Aye, aye, sir.
17:09We've got a line to him anyway.
17:11We've got a journey we've got, so you can steer now.
17:13Good. Right for a rudder.
17:15Thank God we'll be able to get her alongside.
17:18Start hauling in on that line.
17:20All back two thirds, rudder midships.
17:22How are the men below?
17:23They're singing.
17:24Singing?
17:25Yes, sir.

17:57And his daughter, Clementine.
18:03Lower in the water.
18:04Home must be ruptured midships.
18:06Tell Doc Easton to be alert back there.
18:08We may have to abandon ship.
18:09But tell him not to let the injured men know how serious it is.
18:12I don't want those poor devils getting panicked.
18:14Oh, my darling.
18:15Oh, my darling.
18:16Oh, my darling.
18:17Clementine.
18:18You are lost and gone forever.
18:21Dreadful sorry, Clementine.
18:24Oh, there's the trouble right there.
18:27Sorry, sir.
18:28You'll have to do better than that or we'll be forced to drop you from the group.
18:31Okay, you guys.
18:32What do you want to sing next?
18:37Let's make it keep the home fires burning.
18:40You're sinking.
18:41Sinking?
18:42What?
18:43She's badly ruptured midships.
18:44That last explosion did it.
18:45Now, listen.
18:46The old man wants you to get these guys out.
18:47Without panic.
18:48The tusks are alongside them.
18:49Start moving them to the top side.
18:50I don't know about Mr. Wright.
18:51He's in bad shape.
18:52I'll keep your hand with him.
18:53Oh, it's no use, Oscar.
18:54That morphine's starting to wear off.
18:55His body's so badly burned, you can't lay a hand on him.
18:56You'll have to make it up alone.
18:57Well, let's get moving.
18:58What are we waiting for?
18:59What are we waiting for?
19:00Okay, you charcoal broiled swab jockeys.
19:01Let's get top side.
19:02The tusks are alongside me.
19:03I'm not sure about Mr. Wright.
19:04I'm in bad shape.

20:53I'm staying here. You go ahead, Doc.
20:56You're going topside, sir. We've got to abandon.
21:02I don't think I can make it.
21:04You've got to, sir. You've got to.
21:06Oh, don't touch me.
21:08I'll try, but...
21:17All hands, abandon ship.
21:19Hurry, sir. There isn't much time.

22:28Oh, God.
22:28I'm coming.
22:29
22:45Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
23:15Are you all right?
23:40Thanks.
23:42Thanks for the extra shot, Doc.
23:45I didn't touch you, sir.
23:47You made it alone.
23:50Somebody should be.
23:51I'll be back in a moment with our special guest.
24:06We're very fortunate to have with us one of the heroes of the tragic episode you have just witnessed, Commander Richard Wright.
24:12Dick, it's nice to see you.
24:16I'm glad to say that you don't seem to be any of the worst for this harrowing experience.
24:23Thanks to some very good work on the part of the medical department, over a period of 14 months, I feel fine.
24:28We thought you were never going to make it up that ladder.
24:31As a matter of fact, to this day, I don't recall how I did it.
24:35I just seemed to arrive on the top side through no force of my own.
24:39Is there anything you'd especially like to say?
24:41Yes, there certainly is.
24:44Only one man from the Cochino was lost, which under the conditions of wind and weather was remarkable.
24:50The real heroes were the crew of the Tusk.
24:52They did a great and unselfish job.
24:54Well, thank you very much, Commander Wright.
25:02Please be with us again for another exciting submarine story.
25:06Take her down, there's off the line
25:11Through the deep blue and beneath the ocean's eye
25:16We'll control the ocean's wide
25:20From down, down, down, underneath the sea
25:24Save the coast, who has the worst
25:29In the future's yet to be
25:33That we're safe, as long as there's
25:37A suffering there underneath the sea
25:41So rain for night, that they will die
25:45Down, down, down, go down, down, underneath the ocean
25:49There was men who might be down
25:54In the deep blue, underneath the sea
25:58In the deep blue, underneath the sea
25:59Into the ocean who might die
26:00Down, down, up, down,跛要
26:02Lost in the beach
26:04Lazy projects
26:05And we'll eat
26:05Under the sea
26:05אח
