President Lai Ching-te has responded to China's commemoration of the end of World War II with a massive military parade, saying Taiwan "does not use weapons to commemorate peace and instead learns from the lessons of history."

00:00This morning, President Lai Qingde attended a ceremony in Taipei, honoring soldiers killed in World War II.
00:07Later, in a Facebook post, he made statements that appear to be directed towards Beijing,
00:11which is using its war commemoration parade to highlight its latest weapons.
00:15Lai said that Taiwan, and I quote,
00:18does not use weapons to commemorate peace, and instead learns from the lessons of history,
00:23believing that weapons should be used to defend Taiwan, not for aggression or expansion.
00:27Several figures from Taiwan's political parties actually did go to the parade,
00:32despite the government's warnings that no one should attend.
00:35Those people include former chair of the main opposition, Kuomintang Hong Xiu-Ju,
00:40who said in a Facebook post that participating in the parade was a way to honor the soldiers that had fought in the war,
00:47and she slammed the DPP for not allowing people to attend.
00:51There were two other people who were confirmed to have gone.
00:54A member of the KMT's leadership also attended, as well as the chairman of the pro-China new party.
01:01Now, Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council, which handles relations with China,
01:05has said that Hong's previous experience as a deputy legislative speaker
01:10could have gave her access to sensitive information,
01:14and that they're looking into whether or not she violated the ban on government officials attending the parade.
