Wellness treatments in Belgrade promote bee awareness

Serbia's capital has become a haven for bees. Local beekeepers are finding unusual ways to highlight the importance of the pollinators for biodiversity.

00:11Perched atop a hotel in Belgrade, beekeeper Stanko Raric checks on his charges every morning.

00:17It's not just about harvesting their nectar.

00:20Our main goal was not to produce tons of honey with urban beekeeping,

00:26but to bring the life of the bees closer to the public and educate them.

00:30We want people to appreciate the importance of bees,

00:33not just because of what they produce, but also as pollinators.

00:39The bees are thriving in the Serbian capital,

00:42which is one of the biggest cities in the Balkans.

00:47In Belgrade, there's always something blooming.

00:50Belgrade is a beautiful city with two rivers, the Sava and the Danube.

00:55There are countless green areas and big parks,

00:58not to mention the flowers on the terraces and window boxes of many homes.

01:04A steady supply of forage and lower exposure to pesticides creates a bee-friendly environment.

01:13Back on the ground, brothers David and Dario Maricic run a hidden bee paradise

01:18with several thousand plants right near the city centre.

01:22They offer bee-based wellness treatments inside this cabin.

01:27One is beehive inhalation, which can support the immune system and respiratory health.

01:33In the other room, you lie above 80,000 to 100,000 bees absorbing their vibrations,

01:43which is incredible for the nervous system.

01:46It can help with stress, burnout, insomnia and anxiety.

01:50There are often arguments over who gets to lie down first, both among our team members and the visitors.

01:59Keeping bees in urban environments is more than just a trend.

02:03They support biodiversity and agriculture, as bees are important pollinators.

02:08Urban beekeeping plays a key role in boosting their numbers,

02:12as industrial farming and habitat loss are a danger to the insects.

02:17People ask us, what will we do if we lose the bees?

02:21I say, let's not even talk about it.
