Not wanting to spill a pot of sauce balanced on the steering wheel was one of the worst excuses for bad driving given to West Yorkshire Police.

Officers had stopped the motorist after witnessing them swerving across lanes and performing a poor overtaking manoeuvre, putting the lives of other road users at risk.

Police also discovered a man riding his mobility scooter on a motorway who told them it was “the fastest way home”, as well as someone caught speeding who said it was because “they were tired”

00:00The worst excuse I've ever heard for an offence is when I've witnessed a vehicle
00:03swerving between lanes and then cutting somebody up on a roundabout.
00:06When I've stopped them they've had a pot of sauce from a fast food restaurant balanced
00:10on the steering wheel and their excuse for bad driving was they didn't want to spill the sauce.
00:14The worst excuse that I've heard for an offence is when dealing with a motorist who's speeding
00:20told me that the reason he was speeding was because he was tired and trying to get home
00:23quickly. The most unusual incident I think I have dealt with personally was a gentleman who thought
00:30it was appropriate to take his mobility scooter onto a motorway with the excuse that it was the
00:35fastest route home for him. So the most unusual incident I've ever dealt with is when I stopped
00:39a vehicle to conduct a vehicle inspection on it. The child was in a seat but not a car seat. The
00:46father had actually strapped the child into a seat that you'd use to put a child in the bath with
00:51and wrap the seat belt around it so it was dealt with for bad offence. Probably one of the most
00:55common excuses is that they weren't aware that it was an offence that they committed. Members of the
01:01public can keep the road safe by starting at the very basics. Don't speed, arguably one of the most
01:07common and easiest things to fall foul of but also similarly the easiest thing to make sure that
01:14we're doing right. Don't speed, wear your seat belts, don't drink and drive, certainly don't use any
01:19mobile phones and make sure that we're affording the correct attention to the roads whilst we're driving on these.
