India is in talks with Russia for additional S-400 surface-to-air missile systems, a senior Russian defence export official told TASS. Dmitry Shugayev, head of Russia’s Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation, confirmed that discussions are underway as India already operates the system. Despite rising arms imports from France and Israel, Russia remains India’s largest supplier, contributing 36% of imports between 2020 and 2024.

00:30We are not just looking at making one deal with Russia.
00:32The oil, obviously, we are buying.
00:34We are also looking at a strategic alliance with Russia.
00:38At the moment, we are looking at buying more S-400 missiles from Russia.

00:55Aishwarya, see, India already has got into a deal in 2018 with Russia for S-400 missile systems.
01:03And three units are already in while we are awaiting the fourth and the fifth in 2026 and 2027.
01:09And there are talks for additional such S-400 systems for India.
01:13Because, you know, you remember on 15th of August, Prime Minister Netanyahu Modi had also given a hint that India is working to enhance its air defense system with a new shield, the Sudarshan Chakra shield,
01:25which will be a combination of a number of air defense systems that will be made in India.
01:30And the collaborations with partners are also going on.
01:33And Russia being one of the most important and reliable defense partners, there are talks that are going on between India and Russia for additional S-400 units.
01:42And also, the S-400 batteries and also the missiles that are being talked about for procurement in India.
01:52So, this is an important deal which India can get into.
01:54And besides S-400, Aishwarya, there are talks about the Su-57 fighter jets also.
02:01Remember, India requires fighter jets for its depleting fighter squadron strength in the Indian air force.
02:07So, there are a lot of collaborative talks between India and Russia, not only for S-400, but for many other defense procurements.
