00:00welcome back now love is blind UK finally made its debut on Netflix last month but it's not just
00:09the messy love triangles and heart-stopping romances that have got stalking no one of the
00:13show's contestants Demi Brown has been praised for opening up about her experience with endometriosis
00:18and how it's impacted her dating life in the past let's think about it i've always wanted a family
00:24I've always wanted to like be a good mom but it's hard for me to naturally conceive
00:33because I've got endometriosis
00:39sometimes I just don't feel like I'm enough which is pretty scary
00:45you really struggle each month physically mentally and there can be some kind of fertility
00:55problems it really has ruined relationships
01:00well Demi joins us now to talk more about her condition
01:15she's also alongside gynaecologist Dr Neetu good morning to you babe
01:20I mean what it's so brilliant that you are on the show and you were so vocal so honest
01:28was that kind of your mission to begin with or did it or was it a happy accident that happened
01:35along the way I think a bit of both I feel like I went into the experiment to like give myself to
01:42someone and in that moment it was like I need to share this part of who I am but it's something I'm
01:48very uncomfortable with so obviously I knew I had to like disclose it and it was a lot for me to do
01:55but the relief was so liberating afterwards to kind of get out there and I was received so beautifully
02:01and it honestly has helped me massively so I'm very happy about that
02:05it's really emotional watching you talk about it because clearly it's not a subject that you have
02:10until now until you've done the show felt comfortable talking about
02:14you couldn't even say the word
02:15no I couldn't honestly to say the word endometriosis which I can say now I just get really
02:21tearful and really upset about it because it was something that really did take a hold of
02:25you know how I was in relationships and it was something that I was worried about
02:30kind of disclosing and
02:31can you explain how to when it started and how did it happen?
02:34oh yeah so when I was when I first had my periods I didn't know what a normal period was right
02:40um uh I was quite heavy and stuff and I just thought that was kind of normal
02:45and then as you get older you start to get into relationships I was always played football
02:49and I started to notice that it was a lot more painful than what my friends were saying
02:54I used to get like really numb legs and really severe back pain but obviously that was kind of
02:59associated with playing football like I was in injury yeah so I was just going back and forth like
03:04what is this um until it started to actually affect my relationships
03:07but also and it's going to be quite graphic and one of the things that really struck me then
03:11you played in this football team you had white kit
03:13oh yeah
03:14and you used to have to sort of take precautions in case the heavy periods sort of came through
03:18I'm talking like five pairs of knickers for the like just because I was just worried like
03:22can you imagine being a 15 year old and looking in a white kit like
03:25that's terrifying but also to think that that was normal
03:28yeah
03:28that was sort of you know that's what you have to do
03:31frustration because you kind of go you hadn't been able to share what you were going through
03:35to understand that there was a condition that you experienced
03:37yeah and this is no fault of anyone around me because I just wasn't open about it you know
03:41I wasn't telling my mum I was doing that I wasn't opening up to people I just thought
03:45that was kind of like the normal that you do you kind of mask it
03:47and when did you first realise that it wasn't and how did you go about getting help or advice
03:53um to be honest I think it was when I got into a more serious relationships and you know you're
03:59more sexually active and so on and uh the impact of that and what it how it made me feel afterwards
04:04and stuff I was like this can't be normal so obviously I seeked medical advice um a little
04:09back and forth like misdiagnosis like I got told I had IBS um which is a common thing I believe
04:15very common yeah um so I was putting laxatives and I was thinking like well why is it still so
04:21bad like what's going on um to the point where I don't think I really got taken seriously until I
04:25hit 25 um because that's when you have your cervical your smear test and so on um so yeah they
04:31detected it when I when I hit 26 that's when I had the keyhole surgery and and and the diagnosis then
04:38was quite severe endometriosis had it been found earlier when you first started asking it wouldn't
04:43be a very different thing yeah and that's what obviously I was a bit upset about because it's
04:46like I've been coming up for the last seven years to try and figure out what's going on to the point
04:51now I'm being told it's like moderate or like stage three or whatever can I just um yes please so
04:56generally in my 40 years of experience with endometriosis women don't tend to have minimal or
05:04mild endometriosis then progresses to moderate or severe it tends to be two separate categories right so
05:10what is painful to hear and not just any story millions of women is that they're actually having
05:18these symptoms that need can be helped not necessarily whether it's mild or minimal endometriosis
05:24which can still cause a lot of painful periods heavy periods or moderate or severe which can affect
05:29other it's a whole body condition so I wouldn't worry so much about it not having been diagnosed for the
05:36sake of preventing it from progressing right what is more important is all those years of suffering
05:41right that yes well because unnecessary for sure because there's the physicality of what is happening
05:48and the social aspects all the aspects and mentally as well to know that there's something wrong with
05:53you and you're doing this normal but you don't know what it is yeah and it's like am i exaggerating
05:59so I think the diagnosis for me helped validate my feelings and then made me feel like it was it was a
06:03relief to be honest with you like okay I feel heard there is something what what's the next steps kind
06:08of thing um and I went away and tried to like find what worked for me I think in that moment it would
06:15have been better if you know
