00:00Our first guest today caused chaos in the Dales as Debbie Dingle for nearly 20 years before she
00:05waved goodbye to the soap in 2021. Now, Charlie Webb is making her stage debut in the play Quiz
00:12based on the infamous 2001 Who Wants to Be a Millionaire coughing scandal.
00:21Here to tell us more, Charlie Webb!
00:30Welcome, so good to see you. I said stage debut there and I assumed you must have done a big production like this before and in fact this is it, this is the first big, big one.
00:44I've been on stage since I was a kid and I've really thrown myself into the deep end with this one, that's for sure.
00:49And how do you feel? Are you really nervous?
00:51Um, yeah, I am. I feel okay at the moment, I think as it gets close to reopening three weeks.
00:57Yes.
00:58You're playing Diana Ingram.
01:00Yeah, I am.
01:01That's the woman who...
01:02That's the wife.
01:03That's the wife who was the koffer.
01:05Well, she did cough.
01:07She did cough.
01:08There was a guy in an audience who was the co-conspirator.
01:12Yeah, but there was a moment where she does cough on an answer, so who knows, who knows.
01:17But, um, yeah, it's interesting because there's new evidence. I'm not sure about the whole coughing thing.
01:21Oh, you're not?
01:22Are you not?
01:23I don't...
01:24No, I'm not.
01:25They better change the play then, no?
01:26Well, I...
01:27Well, listen, do you know what?
01:28The amazing thing about it is, is that it's played in two halves and the audience gets a vote at the end of the first half and the end of the second half.
01:35It's really into it.
01:36I'm like, I don't actually want to go and do the show, I just want to watch it.
01:39I want to watch it.
01:40I want to watch it.
01:41It's a great cast.
01:42It's you, it's Rory Brenner, playing Chris Tarrant.
01:45Yeah.
01:46Mark Benton.
01:47Mark Benton, yeah.
01:48He's in it.
01:49It's fantastic.
01:50Yeah, it's an amazing cast.
01:51And it's Sean Lennon and Daniel Edwards that are directing.
01:53It's written by James Guayne.
01:54I mean, it's like just the most amazing team.
01:56And where are you going?
01:58So we open in Chichester Festival Theatre.
02:00Lovely there, isn't it?
02:01Yeah, yeah.
02:02I can't wait.
02:03So we're there for a few weeks rehearsing and teching and then we open and then we're going to Manchester, we go to Bromley, Canterbury Bath, like all amazing theatres.
02:11So, yeah, I can't wait.
02:12It's going to be a good one.
02:13Because they've always maintained their innocence.
02:15So like you say, it's interesting how you used them to be together.
02:17Yeah.
02:18That's what I find really interesting about it is they are still together.
02:20Do you know what?
02:21I went to a boob sale.
02:22I love boob sales.
02:23And he was at a boob sale.
02:25Oh.
02:26Because he does like, he does like, he sells.
02:29What?
02:30He spent all this million.
02:31No, no, no.
02:32He sells like antiquities.
02:33That was always their thing.
02:34And they go on.
02:35They didn't get the million.
02:36Oh, no, they didn't get the million.
02:37Well, they did for five minutes.
02:39They did, they did.
02:42What's it like being away from home, Charlize?
02:44Because it's the first time in a long time you've had to do a big stent away.
02:47Yeah, it's the first time I've worked away from home.
02:49Yeah.
02:50So I've been staying with one of my friends quite a lot.
02:52She's been saving me.
02:53But yeah, it's just easier to block it out.
02:55They're like, I've got to be away.
02:56I've got to rehearse.
02:57I've got to keep my head in, in what I'm doing.
02:58So hey, start school next week.
03:00So I'm going to go home for that.
03:02And then straight back to rehearsal.
03:03So go back into it.
03:04Yeah.
03:05And really interesting how you have said you felt you manifested this next phase of your
03:10life.
03:1120 years in Emmerdale, huge portion of your life, very much.
03:15You're so synonymous with the show as a fan.
03:17Like, I still think if you'd be in there, really.
03:19But you thought, right, I have to change things.
03:21You wanted new things.
03:22And it was manifestation that you felt brought to you.
03:25Yeah.
03:26So Roxy and Fusi's book was amazing.
03:29And I know Roxy.
03:30And I read a book.
03:31And it just completely changed my life.
03:33And I just thought, I want to do something new.
03:35And I read the book after that.
03:36But I decided I wanted to do new things.
03:38You know, it's like you want to try different things.
03:40And sometimes it's hard after a long soap stint.
03:43It can be really hard.
03:44And I was really lucky because I worked really quickly.
03:46And so I feel like, you know, I was so lucky in that sense.
03:49But, yeah, manifesting is just amazing.
03:52Like, we don't do it.
03:53Look into it because it is brilliant.
03:54And you manifested up the long shadow, which sounds amazing.
03:58Tell us about that.
03:59So long shadow is out in September on ITV.
04:01It's directed by Louis Arnold, who's just amazing.
04:04And they've done it so sensitively.
04:06It's been done so brilliantly.
04:08You know, it's about the women and their families.
04:12And they've just done it so, so well.
04:14But that's about to do with it.
04:15It is, yeah.
04:16Yeah.
04:17But that's not what the focus is.
04:19You know, that's...
04:20It's about the life.
04:21Is he affected?
04:22Absolutely, yeah.
04:23It's about the families and the victims.
04:24And what do you apply in it?
04:25I play a police woman.
04:26Oh, dear.
04:27Yeah.
04:28In a hideous outfit on the 70s.
04:30Oh, it's very glamorous.
04:31Taylor Jones, isn't it?
04:32Taylor Jones.
04:33I mean, it's like, you know, getting to work with Taylor Jones.
04:36Yeah.
04:37Oh, it's just the jewellery in Cass, Dave Morrissey.
04:39It's just brilliant.
04:40Amazing.
04:41It's such a brilliant cast, yeah.
04:42You've been very vocal about online trolling, haven't you?
04:45Mm-hmm.
04:46And that we should really take it more seriously because it's affecting so many, so many people.
04:52Oh, massively.
04:53I mean, I don't understand why we don't.
04:55I tend to not really respond to people because, actually, when they say these things, they just
04:58want a response.
04:59So I just think, oh, I'm ignoring you.
05:00But I think that, you know, it gets to a point where I feel lucky that I don't...
05:04I've got quite thick skin, but not everyone has.
05:06Yeah.
05:07And I worry for children.
05:08I worry for people.
05:09I just worry for everyone.
05:10I just think, who sits there?
05:11There's an increase in women tearing other women down on social media.
05:14That's interesting.
05:15That had social media been around when you joined, because you were, what, 14?
05:19Yeah.
05:20That would have been very difficult.
05:21It would have been a whole different story.
05:23Yeah.
05:24I don't know if I could have done it, actually.
05:25Like, it's, you know, the world is so different now.
05:27When I joined, it was just about being an actor and, you know, doing, doing whatever you
05:31love.
05:32Oh, my gosh, it's so young.
05:33But now it's, like, a whole different thing.
05:35It's, it's...
05:36And camera phones.
05:37You know, everywhere you go, like, people just, like, take pictures of you and you're
05:40like, and no one even asks anymore.
05:42Yeah.
05:43I mean, some people do, of course.
05:44Yeah.
05:45That sounds good.
05:48That sounds good.
05:49Yeah.
05:50So, yeah.
05:51Yeah.
05:52Okay.
05:53Okay.
05:53So, yeah.
05:53I'm sorry.
05:54Yeah.
05:55All right.
05:56And we just moved around.
05:57Okay.
05:58I'm sorry.
06:01Iroad enough.
06:03But now this does.
06:04Do you want the element?
06:07And it, yeah, okay.
06:10Let's weird then.
06:11Speaker 8 hours.
06:11And it's to truth.
06:12Eordering you?
