During a press conference on Tuesday, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) was asked about negotiations over a continuing resolution which would avoid a government shutdown.
00:03Have you had any conversations about and would you support a ban on members of Congress trading stocks and other financial assets?
00:10I've answered that question multiple times, and the answer is yes.
00:15Mr. Leader, thank you.
00:17This is a timely question, boring but potentially important.
00:21The deadline for government funding falls on a Tuesday after a planned recess.
00:27In your discussions and in your way of going about this, especially talking to Speaker Johnson,
00:32is it the idea that you need a deal by that week before recess or are you operating with the September 30th deadline?
00:40Because it changes how the negotiations would work.
00:42Yeah, we are operating with that September 30th deadline.
00:45In my view, House Democrats led by Rosa DeLauro are ready, willing, and able to find a bipartisan path forward beginning today.
00:56And there's more than enough time to reach an agreement that meets the needs of the American people.
01:01At the end of the day, Republicans are driving us on a path toward a government shutdown.
01:08And that is quite unfortunate because shutdowns hurt the American people.
01:14At the same period of time, we are not simply going to sign off on a partisan Republican spending bill that hurts the American people and continues their effort to assault health care in the United States of America.
01:31The week prior to the September 30th deadline, I will certainly be here in Washington, D.C.
01:37It's the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation annual legislative conference.
01:41And we are ready, willing, and able to sit down any time, any place to find a bipartisan path forward.
01:52Don't let them turn out maybe we talked about.
