Daniel Wales reports on Leeds United and Newcastle United playing out a goalless draw at Elland Road.
Transcript
00:00Newcastle United and Leeds played out a scrappy 0-0 draw at Elland Road on Saturday evening.
00:06Chances were few and far between.
00:08Newcastle probably shaded possession and ultimately did have some shots on target.
00:14Leeds did have one through Dominic Calvert-Lewin towards the end.
00:17But ultimately neither side really took the initiative in the game.
00:20Neither side took the game by the scruff of the neck to create a good enough opening
00:25to get themselves on the score sheet.
00:28And ultimately it was a point apiece by the full-time whistle in West Yorkshire.
00:34I think Leeds probably will be the happier of the two from that game
00:38given they were taking on a Champions League side.
00:41Newcastle will have gone there probably wanting to get three points
00:44having not won any of their two previous games
00:47in which they had been the better team against Aston Villa and Liverpool
00:50and yet come away with just a point.
00:52In this game they weren't as good as possible
00:54but let's hear now from Daniel Farker to hear his side of the story
00:58from a Leeds perspective.
00:59Absolutely pretty proud of the boys, not just with the game today
01:09but overall with the whole start of the season so far
01:12and especially the open games of course.
01:14Two games, four points, two clean sheets today
01:17against definitely one of the best sides in the UK
01:19who have dominated on Monday Liverpool with 11 men
01:23but also with 10 men and today we made it difficult for them
01:27to create chances and were pretty competitive today.
01:31I think there was not much in between the sides.
01:34We had the better first half.
01:35They were perhaps a bit better in terms of possession in the second half
01:38but we had probably the better chances anyhow.
01:40So pretty competitive game and this is exactly how you have to approach
01:44a newly promoted side this league.
01:48So pretty delighted for the boys.
01:51Also with the circumstances we spoke about
01:53we want to do something in the offence
01:54and also our captain not available,
01:57East Nampadu, Aotanaka, top and crucial players for us
02:00and then to show such a competitive performance
02:02against such a good side, pretty happy.
02:06I don't want to single people out
02:07but Mecha up front did I'm sure
02:10exactly what you wanted him to do in that position, didn't he?
02:13Yes, exactly outstanding.
02:14This was what I mentioned before the game
02:16that I was a bit tempted to play him at the Arsenal
02:19but sadly on the week before
02:20Arsenal at Tuesday Wednesday
02:22he was not in training due to some doctor problems.
02:25Still have to be a bit careful
02:26because he has an injury CV
02:27but what he's capable to do
02:29he's shown today
02:29so we need today a physical swiker
02:32who keeps the ball.
02:33Newcastle is one of the highest intense pressing sides
02:36and I would say even in Europe
02:38and there is sometimes the only solution
02:40sometimes also to play a time chip ball
02:44into the swiker and that he is competitive
02:46and keeps the ball
02:47and works as centre-backs
02:49and we can have the time also to move up
02:52and win the second balls.
02:53He was crucial today
02:55I think he was excellent
02:56and also Dominic then in the last 20 minutes
02:58we need this physicality today up front
03:01and I'm pretty happy with both of them.
03:04It was another game where the players look
03:06some of the players look kind of pretty much out
03:08on their feet at the end
03:08it's going to be like that every week isn't it?
03:11that's the way of it.
03:12Yes I've told them
03:13so it's with all respect
03:16but it's not the Bundesliga
03:17it's not Serie A
03:17it's not La Liga
03:18and also not the championship anymore
03:19so and we are not a side
03:22who outperforms opponent
03:25just by our individual quality
03:27so which opportunities Newcastle have
03:30you just have to have a look
03:31what they did on the transfer market this week
03:33and also who was on the bench
03:35and who they're capable to bring in
03:37which quality
03:37so you have to make sure
03:39that you are on top fitness level
03:41you play with the highest possible intensity
03:43you make it as competitive as possible
03:46and you work very very hard
03:47if you want to be
03:48with realistic chance on this level
03:50we have to go all in
03:52and this is how it should look like
03:54and this is what we've shown
03:55during the start of the season here
03:57and it was a perfect outcome
03:59here in the home games
03:59I'm pretty happy with this
04:01and yes point average is good so far
04:03four points out of three games.
04:05From Eddie Howe's side of things
04:07he said his Newcastle side
04:08battled well
04:10but ultimately just couldn't
04:11come up with the answer
04:13in the stands
04:14was Newcastle's new forward signing
04:17Nick Valtemar
04:18who had just signed from Stuttgart
04:19the day before
04:21he was not yet ready to play
04:23hadn't signed in time
04:24but watched his new teammates
04:26before everyone went on international duty
04:29a point of peace then at Elland Road
04:31so neither side too happy
04:33but neither side hugely disappointed either
04:35now they'll both be back
04:37after the international break
04:39which we'll see
04:40most of their squads
04:42go away for football
04:43you
04:48you
04:52you
04:54you
04:55you
