00:00Mortality reached over 2,000 Filipinos according to the World Health Organization or WHO.
00:05The agency also showed concern on the increasing tally of lung cancer patients on use.
00:10Azar Baybien Manalo reports.
00:13Tricycle driver Arnel Pungyan was just 16 years old when he started smoking.
00:18He admits that he smoked every day as if it had become like a vitamin for him.
00:23He apparently spends almost 400 pesos every day just for smoking, which he said was enough to buy food for his family's dinner.
00:31But in 2023, he experienced severe coughing and difficulty breathing, which caused him to stop smoking.
00:38He was afraid that it could lead to lung cancer.
00:53According to the latest report of the Global Cancer Observatory of the WHO, more than 20,000 Filipinos have died due to lung cancer.
01:09WHO is also concerned because it's affecting the younger generation.
01:14Lung cancer is the leading type of cancer that causes death in Filipinos.
01:18In 2022, more than 23,000 new cases of lung cancer were recorded in the Philippines, or 12.6%.
01:27And most of those affected are men, which reached more than 16,000, or 20% of the total cases.
01:34According to oncologist Dr. Herdy Gloria Luna of the Philippine Cancer Society,
01:39the symptoms may be just common cough and respiratory illnesses at first.
01:43So many patients in stage 3 or stage 4 find out that they have lung cancer.
01:48Dr. Luna said that the development of the disease can be prevented if people immediately undergo early detection and screening,
01:56especially for those who are smokers and are exposed to second-hand and third-hand smoke.
02:00It's harder to detect kasi regular cough, colds, it takes a while to detect yung bukol inside.
02:08So you need additional testing like scans.
02:11And we need to prioritize prevention because risk factors are all around us.
02:15Smoking or first-hand smoking is the main cause of lung cancer.
02:19There is also what is called second-hand smoke and third-hand smoke, where cigarette and vape smoke is inhaled,
02:25also including air pollution, which is usually smoked from vehicles and factories.
02:30Risk factors for lung cancer also include family history and age, and long-term exposure to toxic chemicals in workplaces.
02:38Thus, companies and establishments are encouraged to have an early screening program.
02:42She said the response to the disease must be a multi-sectoral approach,
02:46which means that schools, communities, local governments, and even the media must work together
02:51in providing the right information to prevent lung cancer.
02:55Teach our young generation to make it normal, to avoid smoking, to stop smoking.
03:00You really need to act now. That's the campaign of the Philippine Cancer Society, to act now.
03:04Meanwhile, the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation, or PhilHealth, has also included consultations and cancer screening tests
03:12in their health coverage program, YACAP, or Yaman sa Kalusugan Program,
03:16which promotes prevention and early disease detection.
03:21BN Manalo, from the National TB Network, for a new and better Philippines.
