00:00Security's tight on the streets of Beijing as the city prepares for a military parade
00:06that has the world's attention, a parade marking 80 years since Japan's surrender
00:10after years of brutal war with China.
00:13The message here is that it was China's ruling Communist Party that got the job of defeating
00:17Japan done.
00:20It's quiet for now, but in just a day, some of China's most advanced weaponry will proceed
00:25down this road, along with more than 10,000 troops, a show of how strong China's military
00:31has become.
00:33Though there are some restrictions on daily life, and not everyone sure they'll get to
00:37see the parade, there's a mood of anticipation on the streets.
00:40It's a little bit of impact.
00:42There's a lot of traffic, and there's a lot of traffic, and there's a lot of traffic.
00:54But it's not a problem.
00:55It's such a big deal.
00:56We should be able to stay in the streets.
01:01I haven't seen it, but I haven't seen it.
01:02Because I feel like, in the past, I've been a bit concerned about that.
01:05I feel like we can't go to the streets.
01:08But I really want to go.
01:09I want to go to the streets and see it.
01:13Those who will definitely get to see the display include a range of invited world leaders.
01:19These include African leaders, like Zimbabwean President Emerson Menangagwa, who are being welcomed
01:24in style.
01:25As well as some VIPs who find common cause with China's challenge to the United States
01:30and its push for a multipolar world.
01:33Kim Jong-un is on the way from North Korea in his armored train.
01:37And Russia's Vladimir Putin, fresh from a Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit, will
01:41be there too.
01:43One place watching the parade especially closely is Taiwan.
01:47China claims Taiwan, and says it won't rule out using force to take it.
01:51But Taiwan sees itself as sovereign, using the official name the Republic of China, or ROC.
01:57While the parade will show off China's latest military tech, the reaction to the event in
02:01Taipei is as critical as it is cautious.
02:06Officials in charge of China Tai say the idea the Chinese Communist Party beat Japan is a distortion
02:11of history.
02:13Most of the fighting was carried out by the ROC's nationalist forces.
02:16And that the Chinese Communists, that later pushed them to Taiwan, only used the conflict
02:21with Japan to strengthen themselves.
02:23Then, as Taiwan's Deputy Minister in charge of China Tai says, there's the issue of the
02:29bill for the parade.
02:30And who will end up footing it?
02:32Today, on January 1, it is the day of China.
02:36There are a lot of small businesses and employees who don't have this loan.
02:42They want to spend over 1,500 million台币 to perform a military campaign.
02:47But they don't forget the current economy, labor, and society issues.
02:52They want to make sure that the Chinese people encounter this situation, they will be happy.
02:58Whatever people's true feelings, the spotlight is coming to Beijing Wednesday.
03:02The decorations are set, the stands ready, and even from the rehearsals, the message is
03:07clear.
03:08China has arrived as a global military power.
03:11The question now is how rivals like the United States, and those in Beijing's crosshairs like
03:15Taiwan, adapt.
