00:00Russian propaganda is overtaking legitimate news in the Czech Republic.
00:07A new report claims that disinformation websites in the Czech Republic
00:11publish around 120 articles a day,
00:15outpacing its main reliable news outlets.
00:18Czech media company Voxpop teams up with an IT association called Druitt
00:23to analyse 360,000 publications across 16 platforms over the past 25 years.
00:30The investigation revealed that disinformation servers in the country
00:33churn out more articles every day than the largest Czech media houses,
00:38often doing so covertly with Russian money or funding from entities close to Russia.
00:43Voxpop said that roughly 10% of the articles were direct translations of pieces
00:48from state-owned and state-controlled Russian outlets such as Sputnik and RT
00:52or other websites linked to the Russian propaganda machine.
00:55The EU has banned these media platforms since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
01:02The report notes a common tactic that Russian propaganda campaigns often employ in Europe.
01:07As election time approaches, the amount of disinformation ramps up.
01:12The Czech Republic is due to hold its parliamentary elections in early October,
01:16and Voxpop says that around 4,000 misleading articles are published per month,
01:21the highest rate in history.
01:23Some of the misleading headlines include the supposed bankruptcy of Ukraine,
01:28allegations that Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Maloney was spotted taking cocaine,
01:32and accusations that Brussels will interfere in the Czech elections.
01:36Ultimately, the goal of such headlines is to try and muster distrust in Western democracy
01:41and political leaders, and to try and generate a more positive public opinion towards Russia.
