00:00So this is a picture of me and my mom when I was a kid.
00:14My mom was so young and full of life.
00:20I just think about all of the struggles that she dealt with.
00:24She was my superhero because she got through it all.
00:29Words can't describe how much I miss my mom.
00:35I miss her every day.
00:40Like, it's been a struggle without her.
00:42It's been a struggle, you know, growing into a woman with no guidance.
00:51So all I think about is how different things
00:53would be if she was here.
00:54I miss her like crazy.
01:01Isiah was born evil.
01:07I've seen his evilness come out.
01:09I've seen it in his face.
01:12When Isaiah made threats, I believed him.
01:17I don't know if it was something in his eyes.
01:19He just looked crazy to me.
01:21I can't really explain it.
01:22But as a kid, I just knew something wasn't right.
01:27That monster was just waiting to come out.
01:43That monster was just waiting to come out.
01:45That monster was just waiting to come out.
01:49Well...
01:54I don't know what the hell
01:56I know.
01:57This sucks.
01:57There was...
02:00There was a lion I've been
02:13That monster
02:15That monster conhe食 artwork
02:17so um we are originally from Oakland California we moved to Arizona in the year 2000 I'm the
02:35oldest of five I think that my mom was born to be a mom because no matter how many of us it was
02:45it was very natural to her I was 11 years old my mom met Isaiah Patterson I will never forget it we
03:01walked through the door I saw him standing in the kitchen with my mom all hugged up on my mom this
03:08is a 60 something year old man at the time my mom was almost 30 trying to hug us and play with us and
03:20we were just like uh no it's nice to meet you he didn't have a good vibe to him his aura was very
03:31fake usually when my mom dates someone we don't get that right off the bat from what I can remember
03:40I know he came on very strong I was just thrown off I didn't want him touching me I don't know if I can
03:53sense it then as a child but I was uncomfortable I was very uncomfortable because once he came he never
04:02went away after that we were stuck with him we didn't see the red flags right away but slowly
04:11um slowly but surely we definitely start seeing some of them come out once Isaiah moved in with us chaos
04:22followed before he moved in with us in the house we were with her all the time we had some hard times
04:47we had to sleep on floors and all these other things but it never felt bad because we were
04:55together so it didn't feel like something was wrong as long as we were all together as long as my mom
05:02was there we could be anywhere we could sleep anywhere it didn't matter
05:11when Isaiah came into the picture the dynamics completely changed completely
05:17one day I remember he and my mom were in the room and I wanted to get to my mom and I wanted to talk to her
05:32about something and she was always available to me so I just opened the door hey mom tried to talk to my
05:40mom hey baby and he got upset
05:44when he was angry I can't really describe it other than he just would kind of turn into something else
05:57he kind of looked flustered and then he pushed me out the door and he slammed the door in my face
06:05we're not doing this now
06:06and I remember just thinking like what just happened like my mom would never let anyone treat us like
06:20that so in that moment I was shocked I was hurt I was upset that was a moment where I knew I
06:30I can't stand this man like because it was so uncalled for and I didn't understand why he did it I just felt
06:37like he wanted my mom off to herself so Isaiah was jealous of our relationship with my mom I
06:43definitely think that he thought of her as a possession instead of a partner I didn't like the
06:49way that he was controlling her and telling her what to do because that wasn't normal for her we
06:55weren't used to being shut off away from our mom that change was tough
07:10my little sister was the baby of the family and she took well to Isaiah more so because she was so young
07:24like if you gave her candy she was your friend so I just remember me and my sister we were home from
07:32school at the time my mom wasn't home we see a doughnut and it's wrapped up in a napkin we're kids and
07:41we see something sweet and we want it I told my sister I'm like we should ask Isaiah for it to
07:46see if he'll let us have it my sister goes in my mom's room and ask him for the doughnut and of course
07:52he gives it to her and she eats it when I see that she ate the doughnut I was upset why would you ask him
08:00for her you knew that I wanted some too so I kind of tap her on her arm like that like why would you do
08:07that you knew I wanted some of that you were supposed to share hey he got upset by that and
08:16she's not crying or anything he just rushed up to me like don't you put your hands on her and I'm just
08:23kind of scared he picks me up by my arm he's hitting me with his hand I was terrified and he was hitting
08:31me hard you know I'm crying I'm hysterical I didn't know how far he was going to take it eventually he
08:40stopped I don't remember telling my mom but I know I did tell her she probably would have told me
08:56something like I'll take care of it or don't worry about it I'll talk to him after that incident I
09:05definitely was more afraid of Isaiah I stayed clear of him when he got home I made sure I was
09:13nowhere in sight this picture is a picture of my winter formal my mom helped me pick out my dress
09:32she helped me pick out my accessories and she did her famous hairstyle oh microwave curls on me
09:40that day was that was a good day this moment was special because Isaiah couldn't pull her away I was
09:49able to be her baby doll that day so I think I think she enjoyed that just as much as I did that was the
09:59last time she helped me get ready for anything once Isaiah came things changed because I wasn't able to be
10:10as close to my mom sucks because like I said like she helped everybody else get ready for prom and
10:20graduation and things like that but that was it for me that was it
10:29there had been a couple of mice in the house well my mom set out traps to catch them she told Isaiah to
10:45dispose of them before we could see it because of our fear of them one morning I remember waking up and
10:54I was getting up getting ready for school so we're all going to the bathroom and as soon as we walk in
11:02the bathroom and turn the lights on immediately I noticed there's a dead mouse in the sink and there's a
11:10dead mouse in the toilet and there's also a dead mouse inside the tub instead of disposing of them
11:19Isaiah put them inside of our bathroom me and my sisters we took off running screaming crying like we
11:30were really you know shaken up by that Isaiah was amused he just stood in the doorway laughing he thought
11:39that was funny that's not normal behavior for somebody his age so it just shows you what type of
11:46individual he is he went out of his way to use those against us to terrorize us
11:51when I learned that my mom was pregnant by Isaiah and having another baby I was upset I didn't think
12:04about oh I'm having another sibling I just thought like now we're really not going to get rid of him
12:09because as a kid I would just wait for the day where they would just break up and he would just leave
12:16leave and it would never happen so when she had the baby it was just I was upset
12:23this is a picture of my mom and my baby brother and it was Isaiah but I scratched his face out of the
12:41picture he didn't have any relationship with him he didn't play with him he didn't play with
12:46him he didn't change him he didn't feed him he never even referred to him as my baby it was that
12:51baby during that time I I I hated Isaiah's existence I hated anything that involved him outside of my
13:06brother I will be upset because everything I was going through everything I felt at that time
13:15I'm as far as being alone and feeling like unwanted and lost he was the cause of all of that because he took my mom away from me
13:31at that time all I could do was just cut him out
13:38I do believe she feared Isaiah a little bit during that time that a lot of times when my mom stayed away it
13:58was to protect us I remember one day it was time for us to get up for school so I got me and my siblings
14:08up and got everybody dressed Isaac was like where's your mom and we was like we don't know
14:15he went into a rampage he went into her room and dragged all the furniture out piece by piece
14:30and he pulled everything out to the front yard and started smashing it with the hammer
14:34I have no idea what's going on until I see him outside breaking up stuff to me he looked like a madman
14:46he looked crazy uh that was first time I seen him act that way and like what else is he capable of so
14:52at this point now I'm looking at him in a different way and I'm thinking well what will stop him from
14:58killing us I think at that time I was scared that he was going to attack Shaquai and my sister
15:06when Isaiah would go on his rampages he's looking around he's just staring at you or he'll make an eye
15:16contact with you and like that thought visualizing his face still gives me chill
15:21because it's just pure evil like he didn't have any emotion on his face glasses are at the tip of
15:32his nose again and he's looking over there this is how he looks over at everybody
15:36when you see that demeanor you know that he's on a rampage
15:43then he start heading directly towards me because I was holding the baby
15:49and he was walking towards me with the hammer
15:54and all of a sudden my neighbor across the street asked him like what you coming over here for
16:01what do you think you're doing
16:02and he goes I'm about to bash that baby in the head because he's not about to get raised by y'all
16:11and that's when I start stepping back a little bit more
16:14like hell you are I'm like shielding my brother and she told him her exact words was over my dead body
16:21you got to get through me to get to these kids
16:23so he just turned around he got in his car and drove off immediately
16:37I just I didn't understand why he was so angry
16:45and it was just like the devil himself
16:47it just seemed so evil and so dark
16:51but looking back
16:57I should have been scared
17:00but the hate that I had for him
17:03didn't allow me to fear him
17:06at all
17:07I remember one time
17:24I was home watching the baby
17:25my mom wasn't there he couldn't find her
17:27you're going to tell me where she's at
17:29when Isaiah couldn't find my mom
17:32he would come to my room and he would say
17:34where's your mom
17:34and I'd be like I don't know
17:36and he'd be like you know where she is
17:39you know where she is
17:40and you just lying for her
17:41I have no idea
17:43so the next thing was
17:47to pick at me
17:49because he felt like I was keeping her secret
17:52you want to play that game right
17:53so he took the baby and
17:55he knew that that would get a rise out of me
17:58and I'm like
18:02give me the baby back
18:03I don't know where my mom is
18:05I picked up this aluminum bat that I had
18:08that I kept under my bed
18:09and I told him give me my brother back
18:11and he's laughing and joking
18:16it's like watching a demon take over a house
18:21you've claimed that you were going to
18:25or threatened to
18:26smash him in the head with a hammer
18:28so that he wasn't raised by us
18:30we didn't know what Isaiah was capable of
18:33and I wasn't trying to find out
18:36with my brother
18:37we had no clue
18:40what was coming next
18:41no clue
18:45Isaiah came in and took him
18:53because
18:54that was his way of
18:57antagonizing me
18:58because he couldn't find my mom
19:00he ran outside
19:03with the baby
19:04I chased after him
19:05to get my brother
19:06because I didn't know
19:07what he was capable of
19:08with the baby
19:09so me knowing that he loved his car
19:13I turned around
19:14and I went to his car
19:16and I said
19:17give me my brother
19:18I'm going to smash the windows
19:19on this car
19:21and that got his attention
19:23let him go
19:24I just remember thinking
19:27Shakoya please
19:29don't
19:30at that point I knew it was serious
19:33and I felt like my sister was in danger
19:36I was scared
19:37I didn't know how it was going to end
19:38and then he stopped
19:45and came closer to me
19:47and said
19:47if you touch my car
19:49I'm going to jail
19:50you think I'm afraid
19:51to catch a case
19:52I was more angry
19:56than fearful
19:57so I'm like
19:58give me my brother
19:59with the bat up
20:00give me my brother
20:01or I'm about to bash
20:03these windows
20:03out of this car
20:04he put the baby down
20:10and he took off
20:11looking for my mom again
20:12I pick him up immediately
20:18and we just went inside the house
20:20I definitely did underestimate Isaiah
20:25I wasn't fully aware
20:27of what he was capable of
20:28there was a time
20:41that I could remember
20:42we walked into the house
20:44and my mom was sitting
20:46kind of at this folding table
20:47she used to play this card game
20:49her and Isaiah were playing
20:50hey mom
20:52and you know
20:54I'm like hugging her
20:55kissing her
20:55or whatever
20:55and then I see in her mouth
20:57her front tooth
20:58is missing
20:59mom
21:00your tooth
21:02and I'm just like
21:03what happened
21:04and she's just like
21:06oh baby headbutted me
21:08and knocked my tooth out
21:09just an accident
21:10I'm all good
21:12I believed her
21:15never questioned it
21:16never thought about it again
21:18later on
21:21me and Shakoyah
21:22we were talking
21:23I brought that up
21:24and Shakoyah was just like
21:25he didn't knock her tooth out
21:27Isaiah punched her
21:28in her mouth
21:29and knocked her tooth out
21:30and I was like
21:32what?
21:39I'm shocked
21:41I never heard that
21:42never knew
21:44at that time
21:46that he was abusing her
21:48it hurt to know that
21:50that she was going through
21:52those sort of things
21:53back then
21:54at that time
21:55and she was hiding it
21:57she didn't want us
22:01to be scared
22:02and she just
22:03my mom was always
22:04so happy
22:05so I think she just
22:06didn't want to
22:08portray anything different
22:11okay
22:12I think
22:31I think my mom
22:34wanted us to
22:35feel like everything
22:37was still the same
22:38she didn't want us
22:42to feel her pain
22:43or
22:43know
22:45what
22:47was going on
22:49my mom
22:54raised us
22:56to
22:56to fight for ourselves
22:59defend ourselves
23:00so
23:01she couldn't
23:04show us
23:05that she was being
23:05beat
23:07that would go
23:09against
23:10everything
23:11that she
23:12tried to teach us
23:14she didn't want
23:22anybody to
23:23try to speak up
23:25to Isaiah
23:25on her behalf
23:26because she knew
23:27it wouldn't go well
23:28I feel like my mom
23:30did fear him
23:31I don't know
23:33if she feared him
23:34because of what
23:35he was capable of
23:36with her
23:37or us
23:37or family
23:38I'm not 100% sure
23:40but there was definitely
23:42some fear there
23:42but when you go
23:45through it
23:46every single day
23:47all day
23:47and there's no
23:48escaping this person
23:49like that's hell
23:51that's hell
23:54I remember going
24:01into my mom's room
24:02which her bathroom
24:04was connected
24:04to the room
24:05and then my mom
24:06was inside the tub
24:07and I see Isaiah
24:09Isaiah
24:11Isaiah was standing
24:12over her
24:13like he was standing
24:14outside the tub
24:15watching over her
24:16as she
24:17you know bathed
24:18and my mom
24:19responded to him
24:19like I got this
24:20I'm a grown woman
24:21I know how to clean myself
24:22I was just like
24:24what kind of
24:26what
24:27what kind of situation
24:29is this
24:30like who does that
24:31bath is usually
24:34sanctuary
24:35where people go
24:36to exhale
24:37and to unwind
24:39from a long day
24:40and here he is
24:42taking those moments
24:43from my mom
24:44by standing over her
24:46she didn't have
24:47any privacy
24:48she didn't have
24:49a moment to herself
24:50she didn't have
24:54the freedom
24:54to relax
24:56or that little bit
24:57of privacy
24:57that most humans
24:59most people get
25:01this wasn't a
25:04one-time thing
25:05anytime my mom
25:08took a bath
25:08Isaiah was right
25:09there
25:10monitoring her
25:11how she was
25:12bathing
25:13anywhere my mom
25:16went Isaiah
25:17went
25:17Isaiah did not
25:19want my mom
25:19to have a life
25:20of her own
25:20and so
25:22that was his
25:23way of
25:24controlling
25:25everything
25:26but normally
25:28my mom
25:29would have put
25:30a stop to it
25:30a long time ago
25:31so that's why
25:33I never really
25:33understood
25:34why
25:36she let him
25:37have so much
25:38control over her
25:39and again
25:40you know
25:41later on
25:42when finding out
25:43the details
25:44it makes
25:45a little bit
25:45more sense
25:46that
25:46it was
25:47intimidation
25:48and fear
25:49and
25:50control
25:52at this time
26:04Isaiah was
26:05the breadwinner
26:07so
26:07when he got upset
26:09with my mom
26:09he would not
26:10pay the bills
26:11he would not
26:12put food in the house
26:13so with him
26:14not paying the bills
26:15we were left
26:16without water
26:17we were left
26:18without electricity
26:19and in the Arizona heat
26:21that's a tough time
26:22she'll ask him
26:25like why did you
26:26let the water
26:26get cut off
26:27why didn't you
26:27pay the bill
26:28he didn't care
26:30about the baby
26:31being there
26:32during these times
26:33when there was
26:33no water
26:33electricity
26:34we were in the dark
26:36we were without
26:37food
26:37we were without
26:38water
26:39Isaiah will come
26:40back to the house
26:41and see that
26:42and leave
26:43at this point
26:46in time
26:47when we had
26:49no water
26:49food
26:50or electricity
26:50that was the
26:51beginning of the end
26:52I believe he knew
26:55that my mom
26:55was at her
26:56breaking point
26:56but
26:57we had no idea
26:59what he was going
27:00to do
27:01or who he was
27:01going to take it
27:02out on
27:02but we knew
27:04it was coming
27:04after the eviction
27:19we were all split up
27:21as a family
27:22my mom
27:24and the baby
27:25stayed with
27:26one of my aunts
27:27and I stayed with
27:29one of my other aunts
27:30and my two sisters
27:32were in California
27:33and my brother
27:35was in California
27:36with his dad as well
27:37I missed my mom
27:38I did not like
27:40being away from her
27:41and not living with her
27:43but it was such
27:45a relief
27:46not to have to deal
27:47with him day to day
27:48I felt like it was over
27:50like it was done
27:50there was nothing
27:51else you can do
27:52there was nothing
27:52else you can say
28:03I remember my mom
28:07coming to visit me
28:08and when I saw my mom
28:12I was very concerned
28:13about her appearance
28:15my mom was
28:19super super like
28:21bony
28:22and her face
28:25was sunken in
28:26like she had dark circles
28:29it does seem like
28:30my mom was going
28:30through hell
28:31because her kids
28:32were taken away
28:33from her
28:33they were all
28:34split up everywhere
28:35she's still
28:37dealing with
28:38Isaiah's antics
28:39with him stalking her
28:41showing up to my aunt's house

30:20got a phone call
30:21from her mom
30:21hello
30:26all of a sudden
30:27I noticed
30:28my cousin's face
30:29because I'm sitting
30:30behind her
30:30and she's driving
30:33but I can see her
30:34in the rear view mirror
30:35what

30:43and she was like
30:45Koya's right here
30:46she just looked at me
30:48in the mirror
30:49and I was like
30:49is it the baby
30:50and she was like
30:51no
30:52I was like
30:52is it my mom
30:53and she was like
30:54yeah
30:54and I just lost it
30:56like
30:56I will never forget that
30:58I completely
31:00like just
31:01kicked
31:01screamed
31:02punched
31:03I just could not
31:05believe it
31:05and I was like
31:06what happened
31:07what happened
31:07what happened
31:08and she was like
31:09we don't know yet
31:10we don't know
31:10and I was like
31:11did Isaiah do it
31:12and she said yes
31:14and I just felt
31:17helpless again
31:19like
31:19oh my god
31:21like
31:22I just wanted
31:25to get to her
31:26I found out
31:47that
31:47that night
31:49Isaiah
31:51was blowing my mom
31:53up all day
31:54and night
31:54and begging her
31:56to come over
31:56he told her
31:58he wanted to see
31:59his son
31:59when she got over
32:01there
32:01he began to beat her
32:03and my mom
32:08was trying to fight
32:09back
32:10she ran out
32:13of the apartment
32:13she was beating
32:16on the doors
32:16of all the neighbors
32:17nobody opened
32:18the door
32:19911 emergency
32:20yes
32:21there's a woman
32:22who is screaming
32:24at the top
32:25of her voice
32:26and there's a little
32:27boy
32:27who's saying
32:28oh daddy
32:29oh daddy
32:29Isaiah came
32:31out of the house
32:32with the knife
32:33and my mom
32:35saw him
32:35and she took off
32:37running
32:37and she slipped
32:38on the wet grass
32:39he stabbed her
32:45continuously
32:46all over
32:47from
32:48her arm
32:49to her face
32:51her neck
32:51all over her body
32:53he continuously
32:56did this
32:57until
32:57one of the neighbors
32:59opened the door
33:00and yelled
33:00hey stop
33:01he looked at the neighbor
33:06and he said
33:07that's what happens
33:07when you try to turn
33:08the hole into a housewife
33:13and my mom collapsed
33:14right there
33:17from her wounds
33:20Isaiah walked back
33:21into the apartment
33:22where my brother was
33:24he called 911
33:26and told them
33:27um
33:28y'all need to get here
33:28quick
33:29cause um
33:30I just cut my son's mom
33:32I have my three year old
33:33son here
33:34and if you don't hurry up
33:35I'm gonna do something else
33:36that you're a committed
33:37a violent act
33:38yeah
33:38what did you do
33:40with my wife
33:41if you have a job
33:42you got
33:42I cut her with a putty knife
33:44but I know that
33:45uh
33:46she's been cheating me wrong
33:47too long
33:48I couldn't take none more
33:49so he stayed on the phone
33:51until the police got there
33:53okay
33:54I believe Isaiah stayed there
34:00after calling 911
34:02because
34:02he knew
34:05there would be street justice
34:08and I know for a fact
34:09that's not what he wanted
34:10there was nowhere for him to go
34:12the only thing that was left
34:14for him to do
34:15was to turn himself in
34:16this is a picture of Isaiah
34:34this was a picture
34:37from the day of the murder
34:39that's the face
34:41that he made all the time
34:42when he was gonna cause hell
34:44the only difference is
34:46those glasses are not
34:48at the tip of his nose
34:49and he's not looking over at you
34:51there was no change
34:53to this demeanor
34:54except
34:55when he laughed
34:56when he was
34:58terrorizing somebody
34:59that's the only time
35:01you got a smile
35:02or
35:03a laugh
35:04a chuckle
35:04or anything
35:05but other than that
35:06this is how this man
35:07looked every day
35:08that look
35:11there's nothing there
35:14just pure evil
35:15mm-mm-mm
35:19it's hard to see this man
35:25I just have nothing but rage
35:29for this man
35:31he definitely doesn't look remorseful
35:33he doesn't look like
35:35he did anything
35:38that he feels bad about
35:39I honestly think
35:42he turned himself in
35:43because
35:44my mom's
35:46brothers
35:47my uncles
35:47would have
35:48been looking for him
35:49he's a coward
35:53Isaiah's a coward
35:55after my mom's funeral
36:10I
36:11felt numb
36:12the best way to describe it
36:14is I felt alone
36:16I felt alone
36:18I felt lost
36:20I felt like
36:24I felt worthless
36:28because the only person
36:31that
36:32that like
36:36spoke light into me
36:38was gone
36:39I felt misunderstood
36:46I feel like that
36:54for many many years
36:56and I still feel that way
37:00a lot of those ways
37:01I still feel alone
37:03I still feel lost
37:05I don't feel worthless
37:08nobody can ever make me feel worthless
37:10but I definitely feel alone
37:15I don't go to the grave site often
37:26it puts me
37:29in an emotional state
37:31where I can't get out of it
37:33I'll go
37:35and the whole day
37:38I'm just emotional
37:39I feel nauseous
37:41and sick to my stomach
37:42all day
37:43for the rest of the day
37:44I don't want to talk to anybody
37:45I'm upset
37:47all those emotions
37:49come flooding back
37:50and I can't get rid of it
37:52like it takes
37:54a lot of work
37:55and it takes time
37:57for me to get out of that headspace
37:59because
38:01it's not easy to get out of
38:04or we don't really know
38:05how to navigate
38:06those emotions
38:07I guess that's the best way
38:09to describe it
38:10because we have all these emotions
38:12and we don't know what to do with them
38:14we don't know
38:15who to talk to
38:16to help us get through them
38:17it's just like
38:20we're upset
38:22we're hurt
38:22and just
38:23we have to sit in those feelings
38:25and
38:27we avoid
38:28going to the cemetery
38:29for those reasons
38:30this is
38:42Shakoya and I
38:44at my mom's
38:4750th birthday party
38:48memorial
38:49that we have for her
38:52it was meant to be
38:55all about her
38:56the guest list
38:58was meant to be
38:59who she would want there
39:01what music she'd want to hear
39:03what drink she'd want to drink
39:06we wanted it to be like
39:09if she threw a birthday party
39:10this is how it would go
39:13I could feel her in that room
39:15her presence
39:16was felt
39:17for sure
39:18my mom
39:26her only voice
39:27now is
39:28us
39:28her kids
39:29she left behind five
39:31it's a lot of voices
39:32so
39:32I want to keep her memory alive
39:36I want people to know
39:37who she was
39:39before it all happened
39:40I want people to know
39:43how it happened
39:45and
39:46I just feel like
39:53it's a part of
39:55my grieving process
39:57I understand my mom more
40:02and I appreciate her
40:03and I applaud her
40:05she have five
40:07beautiful gifts
40:09that she gave to the world
40:10and she did
40:13great with all of us
40:14for the short time
40:15that we were with her
40:16she was just
40:19all around awesome
40:20all around awesome
40:23I believe
40:25after this interview
40:26Isaiah Patterson
40:27is no longer
40:29a factor
40:29in
40:31my
40:32day-to-day
40:32struggle to heal
40:33I'm leaving that here
40:36he no longer
40:38has
40:39any power over me
40:40with how I feel
40:42at this moment
40:43I'm good
40:46I'm good
40:48there's nothing else
40:50he can do to me
40:51it's
40:53Isaiah is
40:59a horrible memory
41:00of the past
41:01that's what he is
41:05my mother was
41:14strangled
41:16so severely
41:17her larynx
41:18was snapped in half
41:19as far as
41:21I'm concerned
41:21I don't have a brother
41:22I don't have any
41:23photos of him
41:24I don't have any
41:25good stories
