00:00Remember, Wagner, if caught in enemy territory and you've got to overcome enemy personnel,
00:17kill quickly. The sound of gunfire means the enemy will be zeroed into your position.
00:30O Father, strong to save, whose arms now find the restless way.
00:49Time, Spring, 1942. Place, quote, Japanese-occupied territory, unquote. Mission, to survive.
01:00You're a Marine fighter pilot, Lieutenant Steve Wagner, and you never thought you'd go through this.
01:10Congratulations, Lieutenant. That was a nice throw.
01:30Well done, Wagner. You survived.
01:36Thanks, Commander.
01:39E&E. Evasion and escape. Life insurance for Marine and Navy pilots.
01:45The premiums? Guts. The will to live and know-how. Above all, know-how.
01:52When war began, one of the most precious things the Navy had was its pilots.
02:03Marine pilots like these, for example, operating from aircraft carriers.
02:07Men hard to train and hard to come by.
02:10These men had one job if forced down on or near enemy territory.
02:14That job was to survive, repeat, survive, to get back somehow, and this took special training.
02:29All right, Wagner. Now swim back. Keep going.
02:35Go on. Go on. Keep going.
02:38Stroke. Stroke.
02:41Now, Lieutenant, what vessel did you come from?
02:46Stephen Wagner, Lieutenant. 046210.
02:50I ask you again. What is the name of your carrier?
02:53Stephen Wagner, Lieutenant. 04621.
02:58Now, Lieutenant!
03:00Look, fun's fun, but when he smacks me across the face like that...
03:03Listen, Wagner. This is as realistic as we can make it.
03:06Now, if you're ever captured and they interrogate you, remember the rules of the Geneva Convention.
03:11The rules simply say that you can tell your name, rank, and serial number.
03:15No more, no less.
03:17Is that clear?
03:18Yes, sir. That's clear.
03:19Another thing.
03:21The enemy may attempt to provoke you into an attack.
03:24If you ever strike back in the real situation, he could murder you.
03:26The orders are to survive. Get it?
03:30To get back somehow, no matter what.
03:34To get back somehow.
03:37Yes, sir.
03:39That's all for the day.
03:40When is this going to end?
03:47Feels like never.
03:48If it isn't running through the woods, it's building campfires.
03:51If it isn't building campfires, it's swimming four miles.
03:54If it isn't swimming, it's crawling over a mountain on your belly.
03:58If it isn't crawling, it's building shelters.
04:01And who do you have for company?
04:03Mosquitoes.
04:05You know, we only did five miles today.
04:07That aggressive patrol that was after our hides, it must have amounted to 50 men.
04:11I felt like I was in the middle of Grand Central Station.
04:13I'll tell you something, Joe.
04:14They're overdoing it.
04:16Overdoing what?
04:16Oh, this Boy Scout stuff, all this hide-and-seek routine.
04:20What do they think we are, kids?
04:22Well, the Navy must think we need it.
04:23Oh, sure. We need it, all right.
04:25Like a hole in our head.
04:27I'm supposed to be a fighter pilot, Joe.
04:29I'm supposed to be at sea flying fighter planes from a flight deck of an aircraft carrier,
04:33not carrying on like Daniel Boone.
04:35So this is Daniel Boone stuff, eh?
04:38Okay, call it that.
04:40But you're learning to live, Wagner.
04:42Survive, get me?
04:44The Navy needs you more than it does anything else right now.
04:47If you ever bail out and get caught on enemy territory,
04:50you have just one job to do.
04:52Get back somehow.
04:54So you're not pulling out of here until you earn your coon skin cap.
05:03Okay, Donald.
05:04Time, 1400.
05:10Place, the Coral Sea.
05:13Objective, the Solomons.
05:15Duty, get ready for hit-and-run.
05:19Interesting thing about a carrier going into combat,
05:22even on the way to a mission, you train.
05:24You take off, you rendezvous with your group,
05:27you're vectored out by CIC,
05:29you're brought back.
05:30Does it end here?
05:32No, sir.
05:33You get a little exercise thrown in
05:35so you won't get hardening of the arteries from too much sitting.
05:42How many, Joe?
05:45Stand and pass, huh?
05:46Ed?
05:49Steve?
05:49I pass.
05:52What's the matter with you?
05:54I'm beat.
05:55Why?
05:56From all those push-ups up on the flight deck.
05:58I'm supposed to be a fighter pilot,
06:00not a professional strongman.
06:02I wanted to take Jim out of during the YMCA.
06:05I see you don't rate it very high.
06:07It's for the birds.
06:08I don't mind a little skull practice.
06:10A guy can learn something.
06:12But building the body beautiful,
06:14well, I don't get it.
06:15I do.
06:16Then tell us.
06:18This is your first cruise, isn't it?
06:20Yeah.
06:21Well, and you wouldn't know.
06:23Ever hear of a guy named Michelson, Sandy Michelson?
06:27Nope.
06:28Well, he was out of Mindanao.
06:30Got caught in a Japanese prison camp there.
06:33Made a getaway.
06:35Lived in the woods for over 30 days.
06:36And get this.
06:39Made his ship again.
06:41All pilots report to the ready room on the double.
06:46Hey, Mert, you think the Navy could be?
06:48We're getting close to enemy country.
06:52Now, gentlemen, take off at dawn tomorrow.
06:56Your objective?
06:59Installations on this island here.
07:02Now, we're going to try to show the Japanese
07:04we're alive and kicking in the southwest Pacific.
07:06Is that clear?
07:09The dice will be loaded against us.
07:12We know they outnumber us in aircraft
07:14from bases here on Bougainville.
07:17They can also bring pressure to bear from Timor.
07:20Now, you may be jumped at any minute by zeros.
07:23And your job is to smash the installations here and get back to the ship.
07:31We hope to take them by surprise.
07:33We might.
07:35Then again, we might not.
07:36Sir?
07:37Yes?
07:37Well, sir, I wouldn't want it to happen to a dog,
07:41but suppose one of us has to ditch on this little piece of real estate.
07:45I was coming to that.
07:47That will be tough.
07:49The island's swarming with Japanese,
07:51and a little something extra has been added.
07:54Cannibals.
07:55Cannibals?
07:57Now, if any of you have to ditch and hit this island here,
08:00your instructions are to work your way toward the eastern end.
08:04We've been informed that a contact's been landed there.
08:07We don't know who it is yet.
08:08But if any of you are missing,
08:10we'll radio the contact in code.
08:12Any other questions?
08:17All right.
08:19Detail briefing at 0500 just before takeoff.
08:23And good luck.
08:39Hey, kid.
08:40What's with the goosebumps?
08:42Goosebumps?
08:43You're crazy.
08:45Those are millions of tiny muscles from all those push-ups.
08:48You speak for yourself, strong heart.
08:50I got them, too, and I'm just plain scared.
08:53Nothing to be scared of.
08:55Only a few thousand eyes will be staring up at you tomorrow.
08:58And another thing.
08:59To keep you from getting bored,
09:01they'll keep you surrounded with tracers.
09:04You make it sound so pleasant, Murph.
09:06What's it really feel like?
09:08The real thing.
09:09I don't think anybody can explain it, Steve.
09:11Steve, it's kind of personal.
09:16Each guy faces it in a different way.
09:19I guess it's like a woman that's about to have a baby.
09:22She can ask a million women what it's like,
09:25but she never knows until she's been through it herself.
09:29And then when she's asked,
09:31she really can't explain it.
09:33It's personal, Steve.
09:38One thing I can tell you, though.
09:40Goosebumps the night before are part of it.
09:43And another thing.
09:45Not only the first time,
09:47but every time.
09:48The night before a strike.
09:59A quiet carrier,
10:00but with 3,000 beating hearts
10:02and plenty of goosebumps.
10:04Another thing that Murph forgot to tell you, Steve,
10:06is that it's kind of tough to get some sleep.
10:09But you can try, goosebumps and all.
10:16Time, dawn.
10:18Place where you launch a strike.
10:20Mission, gamble.
10:22This is you, marine pilot Steve Wagner,
10:49doing what you were born to do.
10:51Fly.
10:52Or maybe die.
10:54Or maybe die.
10:55Volunteer.
10:55Let someone else bounce around here?
11:01Why?
11:03How me?
11:03Why?
11:04How me?
11:05I'm lucky.
11:05What?
11:06Well, you're the next, sir.
11:06You're the next, sir.
11:07Oh, no.
11:09I feel out of fire.
11:09It's okay,азывrew彿.
11:12OK.
11:12So I found swap areas.
11:14 you,low,
11:15answer it's otherwise already.
11:16Why?
11:16Hello.
11:33Junebug.
11:34Junebug.
11:35Bandage. At three o'clock.
11:37Bandage. At three o'clock.
11:39OK, let's get the sun out of our eyes.
11:46Let's go.
11:56Scratch one.
11:58Okay.
12:00Keep your eyes peeled. They're thicker than goose bumps.
12:03Steve, look out. You've got one on your tail.
12:16Steve, get it out to sea. Get out to sea, kid.
12:24Let's bail out.
12:36I'm running out. Place the Coral Sea.
12:40Duty to survive.
12:42I've got to get rid of the parachute.
12:44Yeah, that's what they said. Knock the air out of it. Sink it.
12:49The island.
12:51I wonder if... I think it's this way. How far?
12:55I wonder how much that matters.
13:02Well, I'm glad to hear that Steve at least had a chance to hit the silk over the water.
13:07Yeah, if you can call that a break.
13:09Ah, don't take it so hard, Joe.
13:10After all, Steve's a big boy now.
13:13And I'm sure if he has half a chance, he'll be able to hold out for a little while.
13:17Yeah, the old man's trying to get some kind of air sea rescue going for him right now.
13:21He's got the word out all over the place.
13:22You know, he and I were in the same outfit together when we were taking this survival training stuff.
13:27He was always belly aching about it.
13:30Well, maybe it'll come in handy now.
13:32That's what I keep thinking.
13:34You know, one day, he even went for our Japanese instructor. The guy was only doing his job.
13:39He hit Steve across the face in that being captured bit.
13:44Ah, Steve gets as mad as a rooster and is about to build him one when the CO stops him.
13:48I only hope he's got some of that fire left in him now.
13:51Might help.
13:52You move, Commander.
13:55All right.
14:00Remember, the guy down in the drink's hard to see from the air.
14:04There's lots of water around, little old you.
14:07Don't expect to hitch a ride on the first try.
14:11You might be disappointed.
14:22There goes your life. There would have been a raft, rations, a fix on your position.
14:33Now, nothing.
14:35The orders are survive. Survive? Who are they kidding?
14:42Hey, Merv, you think Steve will ever give back?
14:46I don't know.
14:48Sure, he might end up on the beach still breathing, but that's no insurance.
14:52The place is crawling with Japanese.
14:55Yeah.
14:57I guess Steve lost his goose bumps the hard way.
15:00Yeah.
15:01Let's hope it's only his goose bumps.
15:09Your job is to survive.
15:11Get back somehow.
15:13Now swim, Wagner.
15:15Swim till your arms drop off.
15:23It can't be.
15:25Even if it's not, it's worth a try to reach it.
15:27It's a question of will, Wagner. The will to live.
15:29Sometimes you can find an extra ounce. You don't know where it comes from, but it's always there. That extra ounce.
15:33And it could be the difference between life and death.
15:35Back aboard your ship, the business of the war is being carried on, but they haven't forgotten you.
15:39CIC is constantly vectoring search groups over different areas.
15:43There's a lot going for you, Wagner.
15:44But from where you sit, it looks like the world's forgotten you.
15:45Your only company is your own mind.
15:46Your only company is your own mind.
15:48I'm going to try to put a good one in the E-M-A-S-S-F-B-E-D-E-S.
15:52And it will be that country's life and death.
15:53aboard your ship the business of the war is being carried on but they haven't
15:57forgotten you CIC is constantly vectoring search groups over different
16:02areas there's a lot going for you Wagner but from where you said it looks like the
16:08world's forgotten you your only company is your own mind
16:23the principle of escape and evasion is concealed one of the simplest and best forms of concealment
16:39is night so if you have to get out always wait until nightfall nightfall is also concealment for
16:47your force Wagner under the cover of darkness it can maneuver into a more strategic spot for
16:52tomorrow's strikes and a new search plan can be worked out in your behalf
16:56get rid of your main west that's what they said let the air out bury it
17:24cover up the ground so they won't suspect anybody's been visiting
17:35go east young man that's what the briefing officer had said some mysterious point of contact
17:48this joint is crawling with Japanese maybe they know I'm here they're all out looking for me maybe
18:11four o'clock that afternoon thirty-six hours without food thirty-four hours in water or on your feet
18:20I must be going nuts that's the same as in if that commander could only see me now what a horse laugh
18:39it's easy just to lie down and die
18:55it's food you want food maybe he's got rations on it you either get it from him or you starve if you need food you might have to kill for it don't think about it do it
19:24your life or his
19:30maybe you think all this exercise is a waste of time
19:35but someday you may need that extra ounce of muscle
19:39no food you take what you can thanks very much
19:44well not a sign of him I think he's headed
19:52you know Murph I don't see how we ever expected him to get ashore on that strike today it looked to me like it was four miles to the beach from where Steve went in that's a long haul
20:02you know especially with his shoes on
20:05keep going Wagner
20:10survival is a matter of the will
20:12you know what they'll do to you if they get you

20:48Sooner or later, a man must sleep.
21:12The human body can only take so much.
21:18You might meet cannibals.
21:29Try not to show fear.
21:32They'll let you have it right away if you do.
21:48Lieutenant Wagner, I presume.
21:55Who are you?
21:57Thompson.
21:58Peter Thompson.
22:00Anzac Forces, Southwest Asia.
22:02I'm your contact here.
22:06Cigarette?
22:08This is a Coast Watcher.
22:25His job is operating behind the enemy lines for espionage infiltration, contacting submarines
22:36by wireless and tipping them off to Japanese ship movements, picking up stranded pilots and
22:41getting them back to their ships.
22:43All clear.
22:45Rendezvous ready.
22:46I'm grateful for your help.
22:48I'm not at all, chump.
22:50I wish I could pick up more of you chaps.
22:52Old Nippo's pretty active around here.
22:55How are you going to get me out?
22:56Older, sir.
22:57There's a sub of yours out there.
22:59He'll surface in a bit, and he'll send out a rubber boat and send it ashore to pick you
23:04up.
23:05Pretty risky, isn't it?
23:06It's hardly what you might call a game of croquis, if you know what I mean.
23:11It does raise a goose bump or two, but you pilot blokes are darn well worth it.
23:17Old Nippo would have had a colony in Australia if it hadn't been for you chaps.
23:22There they are now.
23:25All right.
23:29Hop it, chum.
23:31And good luck to you.
23:33Drop in again sometime.
23:35Ha!
24:03Hi, Steve.
24:04Hi.
24:05I'm sure it was a little rough.
24:07A little.
24:09Well, Danil, now that you've won your coonskin cap,
