00:00Oh look at me my brother. That was Southpaw. It was the first time ever that I'd had a can of 7-Up.
00:12Growing up we certainly didn't have as much as our kids but if you did get something you're
00:18really grateful for it. Josh come on we're going to the beach. Come on let's go Tilly. I'm getting
00:25so good features. Come on. You want your kids to have the things that we didn't have as kids
00:30but sometimes I think and we've made them too comfortable.
00:40If we weren't here to fill up the fridge and top up their phones this lot wouldn't survive for five
00:45minutes. I wonder. Okay listen up. Listen up. Heads down everywhere. Okay listen up. This moment
00:54on you will not speak. I mean it's drastic but just maybe it's time for us all to leave our comfort
00:59zone. This is just pure madness. I feel like we're being like kidnapped. I don't know why I'm here.
01:06All the other kids are naughty but I'm fine. Just a shock. He couldn't really breathe.
01:11I don't care if you fail and I'm not getting in that rake.
01:20Maybe it wasn't my best idea.
01:41It looks good. It's that time of the year again. Florida is calling for the Radfords.
01:58Well it's hot hot hot today. Oh my goodness these flowers are just amazing.
02:05It's the sunshine state. A kids playground and a dream destination.
02:11The only problem is some feel they've seen it all before.
02:16It annoys me. What's the point of just sitting in your villa? Just get out. So much to see and do.
02:23We're on holiday. Think yourselves lucky. Be grateful that you're getting these opportunities.
02:34Our kids definitely have an easier path through life to what we had when we were kids.
02:39Sometimes you sit back and think, are we creating monsters here? Should we be spoiling them?
02:44Maybe we shouldn't be like that. Why do we have to be here now? We've already been here.
02:51I'm kind of missing my friends. I'd rather be spending time with our friends than being here again.
02:57Mum and Dad say it's for us kids but it's not.
03:01And even when they do get everyone out, there's no let up. We're doing this for 30 minutes. We're going to be shotty.
03:10Way too hot. My back's sweating. Just want to get in bed and sleep.
03:15They're doing my head in.
03:19Noel is ready to shake things up.
03:23We need to get these kids a bit more motivated to do something.
03:26Oh yeah, I know. It's ridiculous.
03:30We need to think of something. Something to teach them like life skills, resilience.
03:38Good luck with that one. I'll find something.
03:45Back in the UK, there's another Bradford whose child wants for nothing.
03:52Everything is going well with Ronnie at the moment. He's very close to being eight months.
03:59He's learned to roll over, clap his hands.
04:05But whilst Ronnie has filled her heart, he's emptied her bank account.
04:10Since 2012, the cost of bringing up a child has almost doubled.
04:15This holiday summer beach house is literally dream.
04:18Is to make sure you shop this exclusively. And what you can buy them is endless.
04:22I absolutely love watching the boys learning journeys.
04:26Do you love it?
04:27Yeah.
04:28Since having a baby, you can't help yourself from watching these clips.
04:32There is so much out there for babies and you just want them to have everything.
04:37You'll get £5 off when you spend £50, £10 off when you spend £100.
04:41You see all these people with all these stuff and you're like, oh, well, I want that as well.
04:44So then you get it, even if you can't afford it, you'll get it.
04:50And just to sort of like fit in.
04:53Do I get a cuddle?
04:56And in the end, I feel like I can't match up, so I'm failing.
05:01Maternity pay has reduced Katie's income, but her old bills still need paying.
05:07I have £700 for rent, council tax, gas electric, your water bill.
05:14That can all come up to £600 a month.
05:19So it is quite tough.
05:22With money tight, Katie's head is buried deep in the sand.
05:25I am getting a lot of bills.
05:29I'll pay them as soon as I can, but just not right now.
05:34I am afraid to open them.
05:36Back across the pond, the kids have managed to move, but only as far as the sun loungers.
05:53Dad, can I have some water, please?
05:56But Noel has other things in mind.
05:58I guess my big worry is if something happens to, you know, me and Sue, will they be able to cope?
06:06Really?
06:08Well, yeah.
06:11This just sounds like perfect.
06:17Noel's had an idea.
06:19How are you?
06:20Well, I'm hoping you can help.
06:25Trying to get my kids a bit more motivated,
06:27and there's something missing and they need to kick up the backside type of a thing,
06:31you know what I mean?
06:34Noel's contacted a survivalist specialist.
06:37So these guys are professionals.
06:39I mean, they are so used to working out problems in tough, difficult circumstances.
06:45I'm hiring them.
06:46It's not just to shout and scream at the kids and, you know, get them into line.
06:50It's more of getting the kids to discover what they're capable of doing
06:54and to make them appreciate what they've got.
06:57I suppose, I think what kids miss at the moment is that they miss a challenge.
07:01Mm-hmm.
07:01Would they be up for a little bit of discomfort?
07:05There's not many of them that'll be up for it.
07:07I'm sure, Noel, you've told your wife at least what you're thinking.
07:11Noel is looking to take only those he feels would benefit from some extra help and guidance.
07:25Here's a few of them.
07:27Phoebe.
07:30She used to love animals, football, being outdoors.
07:34All that's just been crushed by just staring at her screen.
07:37Josh.
07:39A few years ago, we got him kayaking and it really brought the real Josh to the surface.
07:44But that seems to have gone again.
07:50Then there's Tilly.
07:53She had that difficult time with her surgery and all the recovery and what have you.
07:56But today, she uses it as an excuse not to push herself.
08:00She should be more adventurous, get out there and do things.
08:04Then we've got Casper.
08:09If he doesn't go his way, he doesn't like it.
08:11He starts getting upset and frustrated.
08:14I want Casper to learn resilience.
08:19Is it a punishment, Noel, because it sure sounds like it?
08:22No.
08:22Do you know what?
08:23I think at the end of this, he'll come up to me, shake me hands and say, thanks, Dad.
08:26What you're saying to me, why do you think I know exactly what to do?
08:30Brilliant.
08:32Bye for now.
08:32Bye.
08:34What have I just signed up, Bob?
08:36If this doesn't work out, they will never speak to me again.
08:50Good morning, ladies and gentlemen.
08:52It's only three weeks since the Radfords returned from Florida.
08:56But they're off again.
08:57Or at least a select few are.
09:03I'm on a plane, but I don't know where I'm going.
09:07Only the parents have a clue what lies ahead.
09:09I think the kids are going to gain a lot out of this, because when I was younger, I did rock climbing, fell running.
09:16We did survival skills and all that sort of thing. I think this will work for the kids as well.
09:20I really think that the whole idea is just bonkers.
09:24Touchdown is in Dublin, but they're not staying.
09:30Noel's taking them out of town.
09:32We've never been to Ireland at all.
09:37It'll be a weekend to remember this, hopefully for all the right reasons.
09:44Some of this is going to be a bit testing for them, but it'll be fun.
09:48Noel has brought along the kids he thinks need some character building.
09:52So we've brought along with us Tilly, Joff, Max, Casper, Phoebe, and we've also brought our granddaughter Daisy, who is such a lovely girl.
10:01She's very determined. So we're really interested to know how she gets on.
10:10They've been driving for two hours and are now in one of the most remote areas of Ireland.
10:16We've driven hours from the city. We've arrived in the middle of nowhere.
10:21We've got the kids with us. I think we're both just anxious of what's about to unfold and happen.
10:28Why are we stopping?
10:30Behind us.
10:36Do I speak? Anybody? Keep your heads down.
10:39Heads down everywhere.
10:41Any thoughts that this was going to be an ordinary holiday have just vanished.
10:46Keep your heads down.
10:48What have you signed us up for, Noel?
10:51Oh my god.
10:53Is this some sort of sick freak?
10:56Do not talk.
10:58It's everything we tell you to do.
11:01What if they kidnap us?
11:02I don't like being controlled, but I can't really do anything about this.
11:11I'll do you there. Thanks very much.
11:14Wherever they were heading...
11:15Let's go, let's go. Let's get off the bus.
11:17They've arrived.
11:18Come on, fast, fast, fast, let's go.
11:22They're not like any holiday reps I've ever met.
11:25I think I'm being punished for something.
11:27Something really, really bad.
11:29I don't know why I am here. I mean all the other kids I understand, they're naughty, but I'm fine.
11:35This is just pure madness. I feel like we're being, like, kidnapped.
11:39The kids have been told that this is a survivalist adventure, and they were up for it, but it will be a shock for them.
11:47We're going to be using the environment around us, and we're going to be testing them.
11:50From the moment they come in, they're going to be challenged.
11:56All of our staff, most of us are ex-military.
11:59We do this because we realise that people want to be challenged.
12:05Where we are, there is nothing around us.
12:07There is no chance of them being able to walk down around the corner to a shock.
12:11This is as remote as you can get.
12:14Hope you know what you're doing, Noel.
12:16I do understand what Noel's trying to do here, but this is a bit over the top.
12:23This might be a bit more hardcore than they're bagging for.
12:31Over the next 48 hours, the family will be facing tough, but child-friendly challenges.
12:36Blindfold on, understood.
12:37That will test their resilience to the limit.
12:40Your blindfold's on.
12:42Straight away, Tilly has her head down.
12:44And Tilly is a bit shocked by what's happening.
12:47Tilly, over here. Understood?
12:49I don't like being shouted at and told what to do. I don't like it at all.
12:54Okay, listen up. Let's go.
12:56Do not expect to have a child when you get home.
12:59Okay, let's go, let's go. Come on, fast, fast, fast.
13:02There is method to all of this madness.
13:04We teach people how to survive. So we focus on the fundamentals of survival. Fire, shelter,
13:11water, food. We put them in a survival situation where they have to use the skills they've been
13:15taught. It's not dangerous, but they are going to need resilience and motivation to succeed.
13:20The first challenge will teach the Radfords to stay calm in adversity.
13:25Blindfold on, blindfold on, make sure it's tight.
13:30Blindfolded, they'll need to safely navigate through rough terrain, guided only by Casper and Phoebe.
13:37It's what you need to do. You need to get your whole family to follow us.
13:42Okay, how do you think you're going to do that?
13:44Everyone put your arm and what if you want your hands?
13:46Boom!
13:48The safety of the Radfords is now firmly in the hands of its youngest members.
13:54Do you trust them, Noel?
13:56We'll get distracted. It'll be us that are getting hurt.
14:03Oh my god, Casper.
14:05I definitely trust like the older siblings, but the younger ones, there isn't
14:11much trust there, to be honest.
14:14I'm not receiving much information from The Hobbit, so...
14:17Casper, you need to get them more information.
14:19Nobody's listening.
14:21To complete the challenge, Casper can't give up at the first obstacle.
14:27Oh my god, I feel like I'm in the bushes.
14:29Now we're going to go on sand.
14:30On the beach?
14:33Yeah, don't walk them into the rock there, Phoebe.
14:35Oh, sugar.
14:37In a survival situation, a twisted ankle,
14:40or even something as simple as wet feet, can have a huge impact.
14:44Right, you're going to step up with some water, okay?
14:46Yeah.
14:46Look.
14:47I can't walk.
14:48I can't say look.
14:49Look.
14:50Casper.
14:53That's it.
14:55Kids.
14:55Stop!
14:57Kids, stand up.
14:58Stand up.
14:59Blindfolds off.
15:00Blindfolds off.
15:02That was a good effort, okay?
15:04Well done.
15:05Lot of communication.
15:06You learnt as you went, didn't you?
15:08Noel's already seen promising signs.
15:12I'm really impressed with Casper.
15:13If things don't normally go his own way, he throws his toys out the pram,
15:16but he's rode it out and done a really good job this time.
15:19And as if being dragged nine hours away from home wasn't enough.
15:24Everyone who has a phone, I want you to take it out and place it on the ground in front of you.
15:30We do not want to find someone who has a phone later in the evening.
15:33If anyone quits before 48 hours is up, the whole family will fail.
15:43Do you see what you're standing in?
15:44That's what you have to survive, yeah?
15:48You up for it?
15:51There's nothing to do here.
15:53I can't stay here for now.
15:54Before new mum Katie had eight-month-old Ronnie, there was already a baby in her life.
16:08Her four-wheeled bestie, Sally.
16:12Before I'd done my test, I was looking at this one car, the CIB Fair.
16:17I thought, I want this car. I want it.
16:19My dad kept saying to me, just get a cheap car, but I didn't listen to him.
16:26I just dived right into it and went for finance.
16:31So Sally costs £800 a month.
16:37Today, Katie is travelling to meet sister Chloe for some retail therapy.
16:42This is really cute.
16:43Oh, that's cute.
16:44That's nice, that.
16:46But Chloe might not be the best shopping companion.
16:49Oh, Katie, look at this.
16:51The cash-strap Katie.
16:53Chloe, do you have one of these?
16:54Yeah, I like that.
16:56These mum influencers are doing the job properly, aren't they?
16:58I love watching them videos.
17:01I absolutely love them, but it does make you want to buy these things.
17:05Even if you've got, like, your whole nursery sorted,
17:07you'll see something on these videos and you're like, oh, I need to get that.
17:11Ronnie's got everything on here.
17:14Sounds like Katie's been watching them again, too.
17:16Well then, Chloe, I do really like this bed.
17:19I like that one.
17:20Yeah?
17:21Or no?
17:22Well, we say, yeah.
17:24We've picked two outfits up so far.
17:26Do you want a bag?
17:27Wear it, please.
17:28But it's only just beginning.
17:30That's nice over there, isn't it?
17:32Yeah.
17:33I like that rocking chair.
17:34I wouldn't use it, but I want it.
17:35Bringing up baby has changed dramatically since these two were in nappies.
17:40This generation, we want the newest gadgets, we want the newest things.
17:47Whereas when mum and dad was having us older ones, they did use hand-me-downs a lot more.
17:54I really like that.
17:55She's spent a fortune already.
17:57How much is that, though?
17:59But for Ronnie, Katie just can't say no.
18:01Four hundred pound.
18:03Four hundred.
18:06No.
18:10But that is actually really good still.
18:14No, no.
18:15I don't really like it.
18:16This is only ending one way.
18:19Yeah, you like it.
18:20Oh, good.
18:20Ronnie likes it.
18:22Good.
18:24Hiya, are you paying by card?
18:25Er, please.
18:26It's actually been declined.
18:33Bank account says nope.
18:36Do you have another card?
18:37No.
18:39Katie's spending spree is over.
18:42Katie, that's terrible.
18:43I don't mind lending you it if you really want it.
18:47But it is a lot.
18:50She's spent up, and for Katie, judgment day is coming.
18:53I literally don't know what it went on.
19:01We are all under pressure.
19:02This is where it's actually going to matter.
19:05The Radford survival experience just got serious.
19:10Time is really, really important to us.
19:12If we don't get our fire going, we're in a survival situation.
19:16It's only two hours until sunset, and with the temperature plummeting,
19:20staying warm and dry is critical.
19:22This is going to be hard for them, because they're used to luxury hotels,
19:27luxury camper van, the lovely comfy beds.
19:31There's none of that.
19:33So we need fuel, oxygen and heat to start a fire.
19:36After a lesson in fire-making skills...
19:39So what we're going to do is we're going to see if you can actually put theory into practice.
19:43OK.
19:43Go!
19:44Let's go.
19:44Right, boys.
19:45This is a lesson in teamwork.
19:48Who wants to gather wood?
19:49And it's girls versus boys.
19:51The girls are on with it, collecting the stuff already.
19:54That'll be good.
19:55Yep.
19:55We were told we had to work together to build our team's shelter for the night.
20:00Is this good?
20:01You're going to miss your bed, Casper?
20:05To gather wood and light a fire.
20:06Let me open this, and then we're going to do the flint bit.
20:10They said listen to each other and communicate with each other.
20:14We need different sizes, thinner, up to thicker.
20:17OK, Max, I want you to make sure that this is the area we're going to light the fire, OK?
20:20Teamwork is something Max is struggling with.
20:25Help me carry this.
20:27I'm not helping you carry an entire tree.
20:29Max, what are you getting?
20:30Max isn't helping at all, he's just doing his own thing.
20:33We need bigger logs.
20:35Well, work as a team, lads, work as a team.
20:36Max is an individual that likes to problem solve on his own.
20:42I've lit him quite a lot of fires.
20:44I've done this quite a few times.
20:46I much prefer doing things by myself, because it means that I can control everything.
20:50Let's go and get some chunkier wood.
20:52Max, you need to help us.
20:54Work as a team, don't all have to do the same thing.
20:56It'd just be nice to get Max team-building with the family.
21:01Bit more pressure.
21:03Looks like Max didn't get the memo.
21:05OK, guys, let's start putting it together now.
21:08They're still gathering.
21:09We're going to lose this if you don't pull your finger out.
21:11No, no, no, not listening.
21:14Whilst the boys are bickering...
21:16Yay, that's it, that's it, that's it.
21:17We've got fire over here!
21:19We've got fire!
21:21..the girls' co-operation has paid off.
21:23Good job, girls!
21:25Clear communication, respect for each other and a sisterly bond really did help win the race for the fire lighting.
21:37The whole group will need to work together for their next task.
21:40How do you feel about sleeping out in the shelter?
21:43Err, I don't know.
21:45I like camping, but I like motorhome better than, like, this camping.
21:51Right then, we need about three or four of us to hold this, because if it's a bit windy, it might blow away.
21:55With near-zero temperatures forecast, they're going to need a warm roof over their heads.
22:01Well, any roof would do, actually.
22:03So, I'm going to show you a trick.
22:04You start cutting here, and then you pull it all the way back, OK?
22:07But at least everyone's getting stuck in.
22:11Phoebe is really getting into this.
22:13She's treating it like a game on her tablet.
22:15She's really loving it.
22:17Daisy, look at this one!
22:20It's stupid, but would this not work as a better heat reflect?
22:22With the threat of a night under the stars...
22:25Oh, yeah, you've got that shield, haven't you?
22:27..even lone wolf Max is working as a team.
22:30Yeah, Max. No, that's not a stupid idea at all.
22:33That's a bloody good idea.
22:36Max is beginning to realise that teamwork makes the dream work.
22:40If your dream is sleeping under a tree, of course...
22:43I have to admit, I couldn't have built the shelter by myself.
22:46If the others had some good ideas, they helped get the resources and actually build the thing.
22:50No, I feel like it's Stig of the Dump.
22:54You'll look like Stig of the Dump in the moment.
22:55No, actually, no. That looks really cosy.
22:58I'm sleeping in the corner.
23:00Where's the toilet?
23:02That's a good question.
23:04I'm not really sure where the toilet is.
23:06I mean, it's pick a tree, any tree.
23:12Nightfall is imminent.
23:13Would you like a cup of tea?
23:16No, I might be.
23:18But the lack of sleeping facilities are no laughing matter for Tilly.
23:23What about a hot chocolate?
23:24No, I'd like to sleep for something that isn't at all.
23:26No. Come on, Tilly.
23:28Tilly is really not very happy with me.
23:31Well, or anybody, actually.
23:34Tilly has been through such an awful lot.
23:36I mean, ever since she was seven, she's had leg lengthening operations,
23:40which were extremely tough on Tilly. I think because of that,
23:44Tilly is scared to push herself to do things a bit out of her comfort zone.
23:50It'd be like ten hours in a tent made out of branches in freezing conditions.
23:57I think when we do it, knock it into platelet public.
23:59Come on, we could all have some family bonding time and all snuggle up.
24:03Every single one of your children is my enemy. I don't like that.
24:06I'm missing my phone, my home, my friends.
24:10I don't want to be in here.
24:31Morning. How are you?
24:35Hey, Daisy.
24:37Have you survived?
24:38Good.
24:40Where's the bacon? What is that?
24:43It's the second day of the Radford survival experience.
24:48Noel's hoping to instill resilience in the kids,
24:51something he and Sue needed when they started their family unexpectedly.
24:56I think when you're young, you're a little bit selfish, right?
24:58It's all about me, me, me.
25:00Whereas when we had to change our outlook on life, it wasn't a case of I can treat myself.
25:05It was I have to look after the family first.
25:08Everyone was really nice and warm.
25:10Just Josh talking in his sleep.
25:12He was just like, proper like shouting in his sleep and I was like, oh!
25:21That was a very uncomfortable night.
25:22It feels like we've been here forever.
25:26I feel disgusting. My hair feels greasy. I just feel gross and sweaty.
25:32I love building our own den and sleeping in it.
25:37I really do want my children to grow up with determination and the mindset that if they
25:44put their mind to doing something, then they can do it.
25:46Going without their home comforts is proven to be a physical and mental challenge.
25:55My day routine, small fry up, breakfast, and then skincare, makeup, and then go to school.
26:01If I miss like one step in my routine, I don't really mind that.
26:04But if I miss like two or three, then I kind of get a bit bothered.
26:08This is already warm me out.
26:16Right, Ronnie.
26:24We can't put this off any longer. We're going to have to go through these.
26:27Earlier, Katie's comfort shopping trip was disrupted when her bank card was declined.
26:33There's a brown envelope and I'm pretty sure that means your own money.
26:37Do you agree, Ronnie?
26:40For months, she's turned a blind eye to a mountain of official-looking letters piling up.
26:46So this is my wi-fi bill.
26:52This one's £50.
26:55Now it's time to face the music.
26:58My gas and electric, that's £160.
27:03Council tax, £230.
27:06Water bill.
27:11I owe £850.
27:15That's a lot of money.
27:18This one's for Sally, car insurance.
27:23That's £250.
27:26This one's another one for Sally.
27:27Sally is costing Katie a fortune.
27:31Another one for Sally.
27:33And one letter is of particular concern.
27:36So this letter says, I missed my payment.
27:44Katie's learnt a lesson the hard way.
27:46This has made me realise that having a baby does change the way you spent your money.
27:52I can't carry on spending the way I did before I went on maternity leave.
27:59Something needs to change.
28:00I can't give Ronnie the lifestyle that I'd like to.
28:05Mum and Dad can't help, so it's all on Katie.
28:08I don't know what's going to happen.
28:20The Radfords have been without their phones and gadgets for more than a day.
28:26And they don't know what to do with themselves.
28:30Kids today are used to constant stimulation and it's mostly just electronic.
28:34And to be fair, Sue and I, we're always doom scrolling.
28:38And to be cut off from that is quite a big shock for us all.
28:44I feel like levels of the resilience are dropping a bit.
28:46I'm all right.
28:48Yeah, right.
28:51I think little Casper's struggling.
28:53I think Josh is flaking. He's going to sleep.
28:58When I was growing up, we didn't have all the gadgets and we were just never bored.
29:02It's time to do something actual and not virtual for a change.
29:09Noel's decided to give the kids a slice of his 1970s childhood.
29:13Right, everyone, find me a worm.
29:16The Radfords are going fishing.
29:18It seems to be a worm-free environment.
29:20Have you found a worm?
29:22I've got a maggot.
29:24Come and put it on this hook, then.
29:25And with some improvisation from the survivalist experts,
29:31the kids are soon casting off as best they can.
29:34Right, go.
29:35Oh, oh.
29:36Well, this is a great start, isn't it?
29:39In a world of short attention spans and instant gratification,
29:43this could easily backfire.
29:44All my years of fishing as a kid, I caught one fish.
29:49Dad, how long did you used to do this for?
29:51Oh, hours and hours, like days and days.
29:55It's all about patience, Max.
29:59Despite a slow start,
30:00the tide begins to turn.
30:03Hey, Dad, you know I had a fight with a fish once?
30:06Did you?
30:07Yeah, I batted it.
30:12I know what would help if we had our phones and play some catchy music.
30:16Get it?
30:17Just trying to catch a fish.
30:20Why did the fish flush?
30:22Oh, hang on, because it's so...
30:24Because it's all the ocean's bottom.
30:25Well, I don't think I converted anyone into fishing,
30:32but for a while, they were enjoying it,
30:34and they forgot about their screens.
30:35And I'll take that as a small win.
30:38Where did fish go on holiday?
30:40I don't know.
30:41Finland.
30:51Katie is in the middle of a fight for her financial survival.
30:55Since being on maternity leave,
30:58I have fallen behind with my finance.
31:00I've got, like, 20 bills.
31:02It is stressful.
31:06She's deep in debt and behind with her repayments.
31:10With no bank of Mum and Dad to bail her out,
31:12she's turning to the bank of Big Sister.
31:15Yeah, I'm hoping Millie can help me.
31:17I'm going to go in, speak to her,
31:19see if she can maybe lend me some money.
31:23Or something.
31:24This is Katie's last hope.
31:28Can Millie lend her the money she needs?
31:30I feel bad asking Millie,
31:33because, obviously, she's got younger kids as well,
31:36so she knows the struggles with your bills.
31:39I mean, no, it's not easy.
31:40You have to pick the right moment.
31:42Ophelia, get off my phone!
31:44You're going to drop it! Stop running with it!
31:45No!
31:46Chester, don't be kicking balls!
31:49Pick it up and put it in the sink if you're done with it!
31:50No! That's naughty!
31:52You're just chucking food at me now!
31:54Right, Chester, stop throwing!
31:58Hartley, tell Elodie to get down!
32:00Get in now!
32:00What did you want to talk to me about anyways, Katie?
32:02Are you all right?
32:03Um, so yeah, I came round to talk to you about...
32:05Elodie, stop running!
32:06Elodie, stop running!
32:07Give me one second, Katie.
32:08Elodie, stop!
32:10Stop running!
32:10One of you's are going to fall over! Stop!
32:13Just getting the opportunity to ask the question
32:15looks like it's going to be harder than she expected.
32:18Be careful!
32:19So, sorry, Katie, what did you want to talk to me about?
32:22Yeah, I just wanted to talk about...
32:23What do you want, Ophelia?
32:26I'll get it in a minute.
32:27We do not mess with wires!
32:30I'm trying to talk to Auntie Katie!
32:33Elodie, get out the bin!
32:34Maybe some food will calm things down.
32:37Now, don't squeeze it till I've opened it!
32:40Don't squeeze it till I've opened it!
32:41Oh, my God!
32:45Let me hold your yoghurt.
32:52She's just run it all through her hair now.
32:55Elodie, wait.
32:58We've all got to speak at some point, Katie.
33:01It's OK.
33:11Maybe I'm the only one that can fix this.
33:19I don't know what I'm going to do.
33:20I don't know what I'm going to do.
33:22I don't know what I'm going to do.
33:22I don't know what I'm going to do.
33:32With more than 10 hours still to go, the family are about to face their biggest challenge.
33:37They're now hungry, they're getting a little bit cold, but now we move into a real situation,
33:42a real survival situation.
33:43Okay guys, we're now moving into the black phase.
33:47The stuff we're going to be doing is not designed to be fun.
33:51You need to do exactly what we ask you to do, when we ask you to do it.
33:56This really matters.
33:57Do you understand?
33:58Yep.
33:59Everything we've done so far has been built into this.
34:02Now they face a challenge where everything in their minds and their bodies will be telling
34:06them that they don't want to do it and that they can't do it.
34:09We're going to show them that they can.
34:11I selected the ones I felt needed help, together with those I felt could inspire them.
34:16You're doing it, you're doing it, you're doing it, you're doing it, and you're doing it.
34:22What are we doing?
34:24What do you think we're doing?
34:27With an instructor in the freezing water, Noel thinks he's guessed what's coming.
34:31I've got a feeling while walking into the lake.
34:35No one is keen to do it, and no one less keen than Tilly.
34:47I really, really don't want to go into a freezing cold lake.
34:51I'm done, and I'm going home, and I don't care if that means I will fail.
35:04Morning.
35:05Mum and Dad may not be home, but for Katie, the family nest is a place of retreat when
35:20the going gets tough.
35:21Katie is behind with all her bills and finally facing the consequences.
35:32I don't want to be in debt anymore.
35:33I don't want the fear of having someone knock on the door or bringing a letter.
35:41Enough is enough.
35:42Knock down.
35:44Amy's in shock.
35:45But Katie is remarkably calm.
35:56I have had to make a very tough decision about the car.
36:02I love Sally, but she just costs too much.
36:20To give Ronnie everything he needs, Katie is surrendering her car back to the finance company.
36:27It was a tough decision giving up Sally, but I know it was the right one.
36:31Because that means I've got about £800 a month to then get Ronnie what he needs and get me
36:37out of the debt.
36:38They may be absent, but the wise words of Noel and Sue are ringing in Katie's ears.
36:43I've been thinking what Mum and Dad would do, and what Dad would say is spend what you earn.
36:51Bye-bye!
36:52I guess I've tried to buy the world for Ronnie.
36:57I pay too much attention to what I think I should have.
37:00But I think at the end of the day all I need is a smile for Ronnie, and that cost me nothing.
37:06I am very proud of myself with how resilient I have been, that I dealt with all of this
37:14on my own.
37:15I'm proud of you for making that decision, Katie, because I know your car was proud and
37:20joy.
37:21It was a tough decision, but...
37:22We arrived!
37:23Baby!
37:24Denise's feeding!
37:25Yes, it is!
37:26Yay!
37:27We're here to facilitate you, you're here to do it.
37:40It's crunch time.
37:42The final survival challenge requires five of the family to submerge themselves in the freezing
37:47water.
37:48Yeah, what was that stage for?
37:49I think it's a bit of teamwork, encouraging each other to do, to go through with the challenge.
37:58I like just self-discipline.
37:59After initial resistance...
38:01I'm up for it.
38:02I mean, I'll go in.
38:05Everyone has agreed to do it, with one exception.
38:09I don't care what anyone says, I'm not getting in that wake.
38:16I completely understand Tilly not wanting to do the final challenge, but I think we'd
38:22already done so much and we just didn't want Tilly to miss out.
38:27This is something they can say they've done.
38:29Getting yourself to overcome your fears and go for it.
38:33Don't be afraid of the unknown, push yourself.
38:35Enjoy life.
38:36Tilly, do you think you could do it?
38:41I'll try.
38:42Amazing.
38:43The comment I hear in the house the most is, I can't do that.
38:47Well, from now on, there's no such word as can't.
38:50They'll surprise themselves what they can achieve.
38:53Don't be afraid of this.
38:54This is all about life.
38:56Grab it.
38:57I think Tilly's as strong as anything.
38:59She has really sort of pushed herself into this.
39:02I think if she does go ahead with this challenge, it'll really matter.
39:05Sooner you get this done.
39:06Sooner you get this done.
39:07Being in our family is the ultimate example of teamwork.
39:10If one needs help, then we all help.
39:14Let's go.
39:16It's time.
39:18You need to strip down to your bare minimum.
39:21Do you understand?
39:22Yep.
39:23Shoes off, socks off.
39:24Let's go.
39:25When I was approaching the water, I felt very, like, scared and nervous because the water
39:34was dark, the sky was dark, and I couldn't see what was in it.
39:38But then I blinked on to my family.
39:40So I had them with me, like, holding on to me, and I was holding on to them so I wasn't
39:45scared at all.
39:46Everyone stay together.
39:47When you got in there, just a shock run through your body.
40:07Everything felt really tense.
40:09Like, you couldn't really breathe.
40:12But then, and I can't explain it, a certain exhilaration.
40:16Well done.
40:17Excellent stuff!
40:19The dynamic within that family is excellent.
40:22The whole family is a standout for their teamwork.
40:25Absolutely brilliant.
40:29All together!
40:31Down!
40:32Put your head under.
40:33You'll be all right.
40:41Okay, guys.
40:42Up here.
40:46You're coming out the water.
40:47Your emotions go from exhilarating because you've done the challenge, and next it's panic
40:53because you're so cold.
40:55The Bradfords are in danger.
40:58If they don't act fast, hypothermia could set in within minutes.
41:02Up here, what do we need?
41:03Let's go!
41:04Switch on!
41:05I want two fires!
41:07This is a survival situation.
41:08Josh, let's see you move, let's see you help.
41:11Still fighting against the shock of the cold, it's vital the family get heat.
41:15And quick.
41:16Peace him up.
41:17It's it.
41:18Come on, guys.
41:19Get that fire going.
41:20It's life or death now.
41:21Two fires!
41:22One!
41:23No, no, no!
41:24No, you don't need that guy.
41:25No!
41:26Let Tilly do it!
41:27Yay!
41:28Good girl!
41:30The skills they've learnt have proved crucial.
41:37How we've been taught to do it today just made it so quick and simple to do.
41:43And the fire's just got going.
41:45Josh, you need to get the heat into your core, okay?
41:46So, you kneel down closer to it, that's it.
41:47As soon as we got warm, the mood changed completely to one of euphoria.
41:56None of us wanted to do it or thought we could do it, but we did it.
42:00I might go past me for a split second, but you know.
42:03Well, Daisy started crying as soon as we dropped his first turn.
42:06Aw!
42:07She's like, no!
42:08No!
42:09I couldn't!
42:10I feel brave or so cold.
42:14This evening, everyone's just, yeah, loving life.
42:18You think it's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunities.
42:21You do it, you get past it, and then you think, personally, I'm very cool for that.
42:26Really proud of them.
42:29They all did incredible.
42:34Almost two days after they arrived, the survival challenge is over.
42:39We're done.
42:55End of camp.
42:57No devices, you know, no TV, no nothing.
43:02We did have a TV, but we've just put it out.
43:04The family have come a long way since the Troubles of Florida.
43:09As a parent, you know, we spoil the kids, and then have we created problems for ourselves, you know?
43:15Yeah.
43:16Sometimes you sort of look in the mirror and think, the real problem is, is it us?
43:21So, we'll be a bit stricter with them from now on.
43:26But, I think the plan paid off.
43:30They know now how far they can push themselves, and what they're capable of.
43:35I didn't know that I was able to do any of that stuff, but with the right effort, you can do whatever you really want to in life.
43:43I've already done that.
43:45I learned that teamwork is great, because you can't just do everything yourself.
43:52I've learned how to have fun without my tablet.
43:57I have learned that I can push through harder times than I thought.
44:01I don't like being out of a comfort zone.
44:04But, I have shown myself that I can push myself, because you would not catch me ever doing this.
44:09But, I did do it.
44:12We found out how resilient the kids are, actually.
44:15Yeah.
44:16They're a lot more tougher than what I thought they'd be.
44:18Come on.
44:19And I think we've come away a stronger family unit.
44:22Definitely.
44:23Come on.
44:24Right, how far did you say that takeaway was?
44:27Then, even the .
44:30There's one to walk far away.
44:37Yeah.
44:38Obviously, but it's not a struggle.
44:41Maybe it's not even moreשר and just the time we've learned the time to go into the final marathon.
44:48Which is really cool.
44:50And it really becomes his plan.
44:52Because it's very difficult.
44:54Because you've learned the days in the summer.
