00:01There's another summit finish in today's ninth stage from Alfaro to Valdez Caray
00:06before a well-earned rest day on Monday.
00:08The final climb shouldn't be too tough for the GC contenders
00:11and for the time being race leader Torstein Train is looking solid.
00:15But just how far can he go in red?
00:18I think the first big test will be the angler route.
00:21I think today he can survive, the climb is not too hard
00:25and as long as he doesn't have any problems with a two and a half minutes gap
00:28I think he can be okay.
00:29But then the biggest challenge will probably be angler route
00:32and then if he can pass this then who knows.
00:35None of the other big guns appear to be in a hurry to take control of the race
00:40including the favourite Jonas Wingegaard.
00:42The dayen is perfectly happy with how his Vuelta is unfolding.
00:47We don't have the jersey at the moment.
00:49Of course it's always nice to have the jersey but it's also very demanding
00:53for both the team and the guy who has it.
00:57At the moment I think we're in the ideal position.
01:01There won't be too many teams apart from Bahrain Victorious who want to control the race today
01:07which could make it another one for the breakaway and plenty of teams will try to be up there.
01:12That's one of the nice things about the Vuelta is it's much more of an open race.
01:18If this was a Tour de France or the Giro even maybe we'd see UAE and Jumbo controlling every stage for the stage wins
01:25but I think hopefully the GC riders will let the breakaways go and get some time and fight for the stage wins.
01:33The riders will cover 195km on stage 9 heading to the ski resort of Val d'Escaray which last featured on Vuelta in 2012.
01:42It's just over 13km at 5% with steep pinches at the start and a flatter section just before the line.
01:48Will it be one for the breakaway or could we have another uphill sprint from the red jersey group?
01:53There was a fast start to the day's action with an average speed of 45km an hour over some bumpy terrain
02:03and it took more than 50km for the breakaway to form.
02:08In the end only five men got into the move including the 2014 world champion Michal Kwiatkowski.
02:15He was joined by Kevin Vermarker, Liam Schlock and Archie Ryan all three of whom have already been in a breakaway at this Vuelta
02:22plus Movistar's Michal Hessmann.
02:25They quickly opened up a two minute gap.
02:28Well Lidl Trek were finally the ones who were pacing the peloton with a bit of help from Tom Pidcock's Q36.5.
02:36The teams targeting the green jersey were perhaps thinking of bringing the breakaway back before the intermediate sprint
02:42situated just under 30km from the finish.
02:45The riders heading into a sudden downpour as they entered the final 60km
02:50with the gap still hovering at around two minutes.
03:01Lidl Trek continuing to do the lion's share of the work in the peloton
03:05but it didn't look like they would catch the breakaway before the intermediate sprint.
03:09A day for Giulio Cicconi this rather than Mads Pedersen.
03:12The breakaway riders just rolling through the sprint with Schlock taking the maximum haul
03:19but their lead continued to dwindle as they approached the final climb.
03:23It was down to just one minute with 25km to go.
03:27This quintet would not be going for the stage honours.
03:30Lidl Trek setting a fairly steady tempo once the five leaders were brought back
03:37but the steep early sections with gradients of up to 12% still prove too much for some.
03:43So far everything was going according to the script until Jonas Vingegaard decided to tear it up.
04:02A big move from Visma Lissabike attacking as a trio.
04:11Matteo Jorgensen launching the Dane up Valdez Karai with Cicconi on the wheel
04:15but the Italians soon lost contact.
04:18The best of the rest gritting their teeth as they tried to chase down the two-time Tour de France winner.
04:24Joao Almeida leading the hunt with Tom Pidcock and Felix Gall
04:31they'd already swept past Cicconi but Vingegaard still had 15 seconds in hand.
04:37Gall was also unable to hold on
04:39but Vingegaard gradually increased his lead over Almeida and Pidcock
04:43who weren't getting along too well.
04:45The Portuguese rider demanding a few more turns.
04:47Further back Trane was fighting tooth and nail to conserve his red jersey.
04:52Vingegaard though preparing to celebrate a superb solo win.
04:57One week ago Jonas Vingegaard took his first victory of this year's Vuelta Espana.
05:02That was on stage two.
05:04Today, a week later, it's been a big plan on the Val d'Escore.
05:07It was well executed.
05:09He celebrates the top of this climb.
05:12He's a man on a mission and he wins stage nine.
05:17Well Jonas Vingegaard caught his rivals napping today
05:22on a stage that wasn't supposed to see big GC gaps
05:25although Torstein Trane did keep hold of his red jersey.
05:28The Dane still showing who's boss though,
05:31soaring away to his second win of this Vuelta and the fourth in total.
05:35He will clearly be the man to beat over the next two weeks.
05:38I felt super great today and then on the last climb I also felt really good
05:51and then I said to my team that if they could speed up,
05:54and they did and then I tried and they did super well.
05:59So that was amazing teamwork and super happy that I could finish it off
06:07and I couldn't do it without them.
06:09Vingegaard taking his 40th career win by 24 seconds from Pidcock and Almeida
06:14with Raul Garcia-Pierna leading in the red jersey group at 1 minute 46.
06:19Trane still has the race lead but by only 37 seconds now from Vingegaard,
06:23Almeida's third while Pidcock leaps from 11th up to 4th.
06:27Pedersen ends week one with a nine-point lead in the points classification,
06:31Vingegaard is 20 off the pace in 4th.
06:34Jay Vine holds an 11-point lead as the king of the mountains
06:37with Fafaka and Ayuso completing the podium.
06:42Ann Pellizzari is our best young rider,
06:45although Riccitello and Garcia-Pierna are both within one minute.
06:49After a gruelling first week, it's time for a well-earned rest day on Monday,
06:53but there's plenty more action to come in week two.
06:56Join us again on Tuesday and thanks for watching.
