00:00The morning started out normal enough.
00:02I was sitting on the porch with my coffee when my 12-year-old son, Ethan,
00:06came outside with that mischievous grin he usually wears when he's up to something.
00:11He's what you'd call tech-savvy, always tinkering with gadgets,
00:15building little projects, and digging into settings most adults don't even know exist.
00:20That day, he decided to update our home Wi-Fi password,
00:24something I didn't think much of at first.
00:26He'd been talking about boosting our network security anyway.
00:30Within an hour, though chaos erupted, our infamous neighborhood busybody,
00:36Karen, the self-proclaimed voice of the HOA, came storming up my driveway red-faced and screeching.
00:42She waved her phone in the air like a torch.
00:45Your son, she yelled, pointing dramatically at Ethan, changed the Wi-Fi password,
00:50and now none of us can connect.
00:52I was in the middle of a Zoom HOA meeting, and everything crashed.
00:57What do you think you're doing messing with community property?
01:00Ethan blinked at her, confused but calm.
01:03Uh, it's our Wi-Fi, not yours.
01:05Maybe you shouldn't have been using it in the first place.
01:08That stopped her for a moment, but she quickly recovered,
01:11puffing herself up like a furious peacock.
01:14Don't you dare talk back.
01:16The HOA provides rules, and we all share.
01:19You can't just cut me off.
01:21At this point, I stepped in, trying not to laugh.
01:24Karen, our Wi-Fi isn't community property.
01:27It's under my account, my bill, and my control.
01:30If you were using it, it means you had the old password,
01:34which you shouldn't have had in the first place.
01:36Her eyes narrowed, and she tried to deny it.
01:39But Ethan, ever prepared, pulled up a small dashboard he'd been monitoring on his tablet.
01:44He turned it around to show her screen after screen of connected devices from her house,
01:50her phone, her smart TV, even her security cameras, all leeching off our network.
01:55Karen's jaw dropped.
01:57That's, that's illegal spying, she sputtered.
02:00No, ma'am.
02:01Ethan replied coolly.
02:02It's called monitoring your own network.
02:05And actually what you've been doing, stealing bandwidth, is against the law.
02:08For once, Karen was speechless.
02:11She muttered something about calling the board and stomped off.
02:15As she disappeared down the sidewalk, Ethan leaned toward me with a smirk.
02:19Guess she'll need her own internet now.
02:21I chuckled and sipped my coffee.
02:23Yep.
02:24And something tells me HOA meetings are going to be a little quieter from now on.
02:38That's it.
