00:00Previously on The Rookie.
00:01Don't puke on him.
00:02This is not my first OD.
00:04I had this girlfriend back in high school.
00:06I found her after prom in a bathroom.
00:08Four years ago, I was diagnosed with cancer.
00:10Given our continued fallout from the mess Monica in Blair London created,
00:15Wesley Evers has been assigned here to make sure we're flying right.
00:19Now I'm supposed to work next to Angel Lopez when all I can think about is how much I want him.
00:23Malvado is a mess.
00:24The criminal equivalent of the boogeyman.
00:26Well, apparently, Southern Front hired him to kill Jason.
00:29We have the same goal.
00:30All you have to do is leave and your problems go away.
00:33I can't do that.
00:38I know you like oat milk, but the store was out, so I got almond.
00:42I hope that's okay.
00:45Ah, hello, my beautiful wife.
00:47Hey, just wanted to check in and see how it's going with my newer replacement model.
00:51Hi, Bailey.
00:52Yeah, this lady's not a replacement.
00:53She's a bait.
00:54And no one could replace you because you are awesome.
00:57Now, is this really necessary?
01:00We have U.S. Marshals watching the house 24-7, and Jason is being hunted by a hitman.
01:06Can I please come home?
01:07Yeah, you can 100% come home if you can look me in the eye and tell me that Jason's not
01:11a relentless psychopath who would risk everything to get back at you for betraying him.
01:16Okay, fine.
01:16You win.
01:17But I'm climbing the walls here.
01:19No offense.
01:20I'm going to take him.
01:21I totally get it.
01:22I mean, with Rachel here, it is a little snug.
01:24Hey.
01:25Oh, so have we had any movement on the mystery woman that Jason is supposedly shacked up with?
01:29No, but given Jason's history, I would say she's probably the lonely wealthy type.
01:34Yeah, which would give him the resources to stay under the radar.
01:37Okay, well, if I can't come home, can you please pack up some of my things and give them
01:41to Lucy?
01:42I'll text you a list.
01:43Yeah, of course.
01:44And, uh, maybe a little later we can find some personal time?
01:52There will be no personal time until we're in our own bed.
01:55I will have Jason caught by tonight.
02:02Hey, I just want to reiterate, I know what I did last week was wrong, and I take no delight
02:07in any of the public fanfare around my hero moment, that our hero moment that we had together.
02:14I just, I fell out of my groove with the whole TO swap thing, so I'm just, I'm happy to be
02:20back with my OG.
02:21Oh, God.
02:23No one likes to suck up Ridley.
02:25Let's go.
02:25Yes, ma'am.
02:26Anything you want to add to this side, Mia Copa?
02:28I'm not looking for any extra credit, sir.
02:30I just want to be prepared as possible for whatever the day hopes.
02:33Preparation is only half the battle.
02:35All I care about is how you perform on the streets when your adrenaline's high and you
02:38want to be an action star.
02:39Yes, sir.
02:39I'll keep the wild horse locked in the stable, sir.
02:44Check your phone on your own time, please.
02:45Yes, ma'am.
02:48Oh, wow, they just keep coming in.
02:49Okay, seriously, what's going on right now?
02:52I'm sorry, I'm just, I'm waiting on my test results to come in.
02:55I'm a little bit paranoid.
02:56That's right.
02:57Well, um, did you get any news?
02:59No.
03:00These are just notifications that my name's being mentioned somewhere online.
03:04Are you serious?
03:05Yeah, sorry, I'll put it away.
03:08Okay.
03:09Well, they just, they're good.
03:11They're nice, calm, nice.
03:12Airplane mode.
03:13Right.
03:16Hey, Mr. Evers.
03:17Welcome back.
03:18Hi.
03:18Sean, hey.
03:22Just wanted to be here to welcome you back.
03:24The office wasn't the same without you.
03:26I mean, I'm glad to be back, as is the entire Mid-Wilshire Station.
03:28Apparently, they don't appreciate oversight.
03:30Yeah.
03:31Well, look, I'm sure you have a lot to catch up on, but the district attorney election is
03:35right around the corner, and I just wanted to be sure I could count on your endorsement.
03:38Hmm.
03:40Wesley, oh, you are aging backwards.
03:42Oh.
03:43I just wanted to say welcome back, and make sure you're all squared, pen-wise.
03:48Oh, thank you.
03:49Nice try, Vivian, but you're not going to buy your way to a win here.
03:52Don't you find an insecure man such a turnoff?
03:56I am light years from insecure.
03:58Anyway, I would love your endorsement.
04:01Okay.
04:01Okay.
04:02Bye.
04:03Okay.
04:04You know, in my younger days, she really would have gotten under my skin.
04:08Right.
04:09Definitely not now.
04:10No.
04:11Hey, Sean.
04:13You have five minutes to talk about something that's been eating away at the very core of
04:17who I am?
04:18Well, that sounds like it's going to take longer than five minutes, but yeah, sure.
04:21Okay.
04:21Thanks.
04:23You're really the only person I can talk to about this.
04:25Um, I heard something on the Blair London tapes that has got me spinning.
04:31I thought you turned in your final report on those.
04:33No, I did.
04:33Uh, it's not criminal.
04:35It's, you know, Keith Graham from Mid-Wilshire?
04:38Yeah, sure.
04:39He's a great guy.
04:40Annoyingly handsome.
04:41I mean, he's a solid detective.
04:42You were seeing Blair?
04:43Yeah.
04:43And during his sessions, he revealed that he has recurring intimate dreams about Angela.
04:51Yikes.
04:52Yeah.
04:54Well, look, you know that legally you cannot divulge any of that to her.
04:58That's a violation of his privacy, and that puts the two of them in an incredibly uncomfortable
05:03position.
05:03I know, but it's driving me crazy.
05:05Why?
05:06Wes, I, you know, it seems to me it comes down to how secure you are in your marriage.
05:11He's definitely not the first guy to hit on your hot wife.
05:13He certainly won't be the last.
05:16Wait.
05:18Did you?
05:19I plead the fifth.
05:37All right.
05:37This is not going to be easy when the CHP calls for mutual aid, usually because things
05:43have gotten messy, even for L.A.
05:49Now, wrecks like these are all about problem solving and accuracy.
05:54We have to be exact with every word in our reports.
05:56Our measurements can't be off, not even by an inch.
05:59That would mean a change in liability, and then a half-decent lawyer could use that to discredit
06:04our entire investigation.
06:05Oh, it's mildly terrifying.
06:06Which is why I'm making you primaries.
06:08What?
06:09It's your fears, Officer Juarez.
06:11But I...
06:11You can handle this.
06:12Tell me you can handle this.
06:14I can handle it.
06:16I can handle it.
06:17This is going to be as fun as putting socks on a rooster.
06:21Come to Chippy's.
06:22He's like 50 feet away.
06:23He for sure could have walked.
06:27Afternoon.
06:28Thanks for the assist.
06:29Where do you want us?
06:30Given the circumstances, we think this should be an LAPD-led investigation.
06:33No problem.
06:34Where will CHP be stationed?
06:36We'll be helping out at the off-ramp.
06:38Oh, over in the shade for leaving grateful citizens from bumper-to-bumper traffic.
06:42That's nice.
06:42We just want the freeways up and running as quickly as possible.
06:48I told Juarez she's got primary on this.
06:51Bold.
06:52You either want to end her career right now or you honestly believe in her.
06:54What do you want us to do?
06:56Okay, well, first thing first, we render safety and aid to all victims.
07:00That means that our number one priority is just clearing a path for the next ambulance.
07:04I gotta take this.
07:05Yeah.
07:08What's happening?
07:08Were you able to get that stuff from Lucy?
07:11She was going to come by here at lunch and bring it to me.
07:14You forgot.
07:14Yeah, sorry.
07:15This morning's been just a little chaotic.
07:17But you stay put, I promise.
07:18I'll get it to you tonight or tomorrow at the latest.
07:20Okay.
07:21Yeah, stay safe.
07:22I love you.
07:23Love you too.
07:23How far, Boop?
07:3618.6 feet, sir.
07:38Sure about that?
07:38Positive, sir.
07:39Ridley, how far?
07:4220.
07:43No, that's 20.1, 20.2.
07:46It just keeps moving.
07:48Oh, I have to stand still.
07:50Yeah, okay.
07:5120.2.
07:52Okay, that's right.
07:52That's right.
07:53Hey, what's next?
07:54Okay, well, now, I mean, now you take a million photos.
07:58Just make sure you get the scene from every angle.
08:00You search the cars for any open containers, alcohol, drugs.
08:03If there's any indication that this is a DUI, that changes everything.
08:07Okay.
08:08Okay?
08:08Okay.
08:15Clear.
08:15Hey, did you get pictures from underneath the car and above as well?
08:23No.
08:25No, sorry, sorry.
08:25It's my bad.
08:26I understand there's a lot going on right now, but I can't be holding your hand every step
08:30of the way.
08:31Yeah.
08:32It's time to take the training wheels off there, really.
08:38Can you just lay off?
08:41You have no idea what anybody's going through, okay?
08:43My girlfriend died in high school in a car accident, and this whole thing is bringing
08:47up a lot of bad memories.
08:48I'm sorry, dude.
08:49I didn't know.
08:49Just think next time before you speak, okay?
08:51Officer Penn, you clear this car?
08:55Yes, sir.
08:56The driver was critical.
08:57Went off in the first ambulance.
08:58You didn't think to make note of this?
09:01I'm sorry, sir.
09:02I thought we were checking for beer cans, not firearms.
09:04I mean, back home, every call you pull over, have a gun in the glove box.
09:10Bag this, please.
09:14Juarez?
09:14Yes, sir?
09:15What about this car?
09:16Do we have any information on this driver?
09:18No.
09:18Nobody's talked to him yet, but it is registered to...
09:21...to a Harrison Novak.
09:28Officers!
09:28Yes, sir.
09:29Double time!
09:30Coming.
09:30You're right there.
09:32This is the LAPD.
09:33Is anyone in there?
09:34We're going to get you out.
09:35Just hang on.
09:37Please, please, please.
09:38Oh, my God.
09:40We need an ambulance!
09:45I've never seen him before.
09:47But he knew me.
09:49He was waiting.
09:50He called out Savannah, and when I turned, he spit me in the eyes with something.
09:55It burned really bad.
09:56I tried to run, but he hit me over the head, and the next thing I knew, I was tied up in the trunk.
10:06And we drove around forever.
10:09It felt like hours.
10:12And, uh, he was singing.
10:15He kept replaying the same dumb pop songs, singing along at the top of his lungs without carrying the word.
10:21Well, you're safe now, okay?
10:23And the good news is we know who he is.
10:25Officers are kicking down his door as we speak.
10:27Police!
10:31Harrison Novak, we have a warrant for your arrest.
10:34Ridley.
10:34Clear.
10:55Clear.
10:56Clear.
10:57Clear.
10:57Clear.
10:57Clear.
10:57This place is giving me the creeps.
11:02Feels like teenage girls live here, not a 40-year-old dude.
11:05Get used to it.
11:05We're going to be here for a minute.
11:06There's only property registered in his name.
11:08We need to search every inch of this place.
11:10So glove up, tear it apart.
11:12Yes, sir.
11:12How bad?
11:16Physically, she should be okay.
11:18Guy didn't have her out in public and kept in a trunk for hours.
11:21Being a woman is consistently terrifying.
11:23Then you have a daughter and it only gets worse.
11:24Harrison Novak was arrested three years ago for burglary and assault.
11:28He broke into a woman's home and choked her.
11:30Seemed open and shut, but evidence was compromised,
11:32and the prosecution lost the case at trial to Novak's hotshot lawyer.
11:36Who the hell was that?
11:38Your husband.
11:39Yeah, I recognize the case.
11:40The cops screwed up the chain of evidence and I got him acquitted.
11:42Why?
11:43We found a girl in his trunk in pretty bad shape.
11:45He's currently at large, so if you can give us anything, that might help.
11:49I'll pull his file and get it to you ASAP.
11:52Let me know if there's anything else I can do.
11:54Thanks.
11:58You remember the Harrison Novak case?
12:00Yeah, of course.
12:01That's the only time I lost a trial.
12:02Why?
12:03Novak just abducted a woman.
12:05Maybe not the first.
12:07Well, that's not good.
12:08For either of us.
12:10Huh.
12:12Hey, I'm sorry again for not reporting the gun,
12:19but I did find out the owner had purchased illegally, and it was registered.
12:23That's not the point.
12:24The cars are frequently broken into by criminals who do not have a license to carry.
12:28A weapon not registered to them is a win for the criminal community.
12:30Understood.
12:32It won't happen again.
12:33You know what?
12:33I'm going to recommend you undergo additional training and testing all weekend,
12:36plus an additional three hours a day for the next two weeks.
12:39What?
12:39It was a simple mistake.
12:40Look, if I can't trust you to clock loaded weapons in plain sight,
12:43what else can't I trust you with?
12:44What's wrong?
13:05I lost her.
13:06She left the apartment and got blocked in by a truck.
13:09Hello?
13:09Come on.
13:11Come on.
13:16She's ducking my call.
13:17Well, you can track her phone, right?
13:19She's headed towards Echo Park, the firehouse.
13:31Punch it.
13:36Oh, this guy is totally a psycho.
13:40He wears outside shoes, right in the bedroom.
13:45Wait, these things got to be taped in evidence, right?
13:47Potentially.
13:48Take a photo and then bag them.
13:51Hey, Ridley, can I ask you a question about something from earlier?
13:55Yeah, that's not really my favorite way to start a conversation, but sure.
13:59A few weeks ago, you told me that your girlfriend overdosed.
14:02And then earlier, I swear, I thought I heard you tell Miles that she died in a car accident.
14:06Yeah.
14:08Sorry, I should have made that more clear.
14:10Cher didn't actually die from the OD.
14:12We got super lucky.
14:13My friend's daddy's a doctor, and he came home just in time with some naloxone.
14:18And then she died in a car accident?
14:20No, that was a different girlfriend a year later.
14:23Savannah wasn't a one-off.
14:24I found this hidden in the hallway closet.
14:25Oh, my God.
14:31More victims.
14:41Hello?
14:41Hey, Counselor.
14:43Harrison Novak.
14:45You helped me out of a jam a few years ago?
14:47Of course.
14:48I'm just finishing up a meeting.
14:50Can I call you right back?
14:51That's okay.
14:51I can hold.
14:52I got time.
14:53I've got Harrison Novak on the phone.
14:55He wants me to represent him.
14:56What's my ethical obligation here?
14:58Do I have to tell him I'm no longer a defense attorney?
15:00Uh, no.
15:00But as a prosecutor, the only thing you can't do is agree to represent him.
15:03Other than that, you can tell him anything he needs to hear to keep him on the line.
15:06Okay.
15:06Angela, it's Del Monte.
15:07I've got your husband here.
15:08He's talking to Novak on his cell phone right now.
15:10Hot damn.
15:11Setting up a trace now.
15:12Okay, I'm putting on speaker.
15:14Wesley, just keep him talking as long as you can.
15:17I'll mute my phone so we can listen.
15:19All right, great.
15:19I'm going over to him now.
15:20Sorry to keep you waiting.
15:23How can I help?
15:24Yeah, no problems.
15:25Look, I know you're a very busy guy, so I will skip the foreplay.
15:28I was super impressed with how you handled my case back in the day, and I find myself
15:33in a bit of fresh legal jeopardy.
15:35How bad are we talking?
15:37I don't like to use that word.
15:39Bad.
15:40It's a little judgy.
15:41Good.
15:42Bad.
15:42Right.
15:43Wrong.
15:43Well, just choices and decisions repressed people use to keep more free-thinking individuals
15:49in a box.
15:50Right.
15:50Well, I wasn't trying to judge.
15:52I just need to know a little more of what I'm getting into before I commit.
15:55Well, I can tell you this much.
15:56Most people might not like what I do, who I am, but everyone inflicts and contributes
16:01to some level of pain and suffering.
16:04You might step on a bug or cook a steak.
16:06Let's do my version of that.
16:09Only on a bigger, more connected level with larger and more conscious animals.
16:13Are you saying you've killed people?
16:15Are you saying you're my lawyer?
16:16Mr. Novak, I'm just trying to make sure we're both on the same page.
16:19This is taking longer than I'd wanted, and I have a bit of a ticking clock problem.
16:22I'd wanted to achieve so much more by the end of my story.
16:26A certain number of accomplishments.
16:28To make the world take notice.
16:30So, now I find myself having to get into the volume business.
16:33Wait, why don't we get together in person and discuss?
16:36I gotta go.
16:37But don't worry.
16:38You'll probably see me later tonight on your TV.
16:39Wait.
16:40Ciao for now.
16:40Please, tell me you got a location.
16:44He's calling from sorority row.
16:46He's gonna pull a Ted Bundy.
16:48I'm sending every cop in the city, but I'm not sure we're gonna make it there in time.
16:51Say a prayer.
17:10Who is it?
17:24I, uh, Melanie?
17:27I think I have your package.
17:28It got delivered to my place by mistake.
17:33For you.
17:34Thanks so much.
17:35Police!
17:54Police!
18:00Step away!
18:01No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
18:04Oh, my God.
18:05Oh, my God.
18:06Oh, my God.
18:07Oh, my God.
18:08Oh, my God.
18:13Everybody okay?
18:14If any of you ladies are looking to join the LAPD, I'd like to offer a letter of recommendation
18:19written by me personally.
18:20Ugh.
18:21Get back, this is a crime scene.
18:37Let me throw him in the DA's office.
18:38I need to get in there.
18:39Set back.
18:39Angela!
18:40Hold on, Angela!
18:41Stand down.
18:42He's allowed to be here.
18:43Hey, what happened in there?
18:44Please tell me no one's dead.
18:45No one is dead.
18:46In fact, he got his ass kicked.
18:47Hey, it's okay.
18:50You did good.
18:51You're the reason we got this guy.
18:53I'm also the reason that he's been free to kill innocent women for the past three years.
18:56His actions are not your fault.
18:58You're just doing your job.
19:01Hey.
19:02I thought you were too busy for me.
19:04You changed your mind.
19:06I'm not a defense lawyer anymore.
19:08Prosecutor now.
19:09Tricky.
19:10That's how the cops got here so quick.
19:12Yeah, you're lucky we did.
19:13Those girls are about to kill you.
19:14Get him.
19:16We should get him back to the station as soon as possible.
19:18He is a talker.
19:19Yeah, go.
19:20I'll be fine.
19:21You sure?
19:22Yeah.
19:23Go.
19:25Hmm.
19:25Hmm.
19:25Hmm.
19:44Put your hands on the wheel.
20:07I'm impressed.
20:09Like I care.
20:10Who are you?
20:10Why are you following me?
20:12Did Jason send you?
20:13No.
20:14I'm the man hunting your ex-husband.
20:18Malvado.
20:19I'm not your enemy.
20:21We want the same thing.
20:23Jason dead.
20:25You're a wanted man.
20:26I should call 911.
20:27Go ahead.
20:29Have me arrested.
20:31And spend the rest of your life worrying about Jason.
20:33Or you could let me go and never have to worry about him again.
20:42Hmm.
20:45May I?
20:45This number cannot be traced, but messages will get back to me.
20:59If you hear of Jason's whereabouts, let me know.
21:04And I will put an end to your nightmare.
21:06Hey, you okay?
21:30Hey.
21:30Yeah, I'm fine.
21:31What were you thinking?
21:32Do you have any idea how dangerous this was?
21:33Oh, look.
21:36My phone is ringing.
21:37The idea was that you stay in the apartment.
21:40All of a sudden, I got marshals blowing up my phone, telling me you've gone missing.
21:42You almost gave me a heart attack.
21:44Wait.
21:44How did the marshals know I left?
21:46Are they tracking my phone?
21:47We had a guy posted outside Lucy's apartment.
21:49To spy on me?
21:50To protect you.
21:51In case Jason saw through the ruse and went after you there.
21:54Can we get back in the shop, please?
21:55Why didn't you tell me?
21:57That's not the point.
21:57What were you even doing down here in the first place?
22:00It doesn't matter.
22:01Before we get started, I'd like to get us on the same page as to how we speak to each other.
22:14I mean, we may have differing philosophies, but it doesn't mean we can't be cordial to one another.
22:22You don't make the rules here.
22:24I think I kind of do.
22:26I mean, you must have a lot of very distressed families who are desperate for answers, and I am willing to tell you everything.
22:34But I expect to be treated like a person, not a monster.
22:37Sure.
22:38We can do that.
22:39We will just listen.
22:41Whatever you want to tell us.
22:44These on?
22:45Yes, you're being recorded.
22:47It's not.
22:47It's not.
22:52The killing.
22:56You'd think it would be.
22:58It's the least interesting part.
23:01The anticipation.
23:03The planning.
23:06That puts wind in my sails.
23:08The killing itself is more like eating, for me.
23:11Necessary, but not as holistically stimulating as the lead-up.
23:19Now, hunting my victims, really feeling their fear,
23:29That just fills me up.
23:37When the killing's done, I tend to feel a little empty inside.
23:44Lonely, even.
23:45So then I have to do it again.
23:50These are human beings who you are talking about.
23:53You don't feel any kind of remorse.
23:55Do you feel remorse when you eat a burger?
23:57What did you do with the bodies?
24:00Buried them.
24:01Where?
24:05How about I show you?
24:12All right, you can stay here till the end of shift,
24:14And then Lucy will be here to bring you back to her apartment.
24:18I'm your wife, John.
24:19I don't work for you.
24:20And in case you've forgotten,
24:22I literally spent the last three weeks
24:23Doing tactical military training in Germany.
24:25I don't need you to protect me.
24:27Nolan, Novak gave up the location of his dump site.
24:30You just on the way.
24:31I need you guys to meet him now.
24:32Right.
24:33Um, we'll finish this later.
24:34Mm-hmm.
24:35Promise.
24:35Uh, would you watch her, please?
24:39You're a grown-ass woman.
24:40I'm not babysitting her.
25:25Hulu or whatever you want to see my face
25:27and not, uh, random cops.
25:30It's what people actually care about.
25:32So good here.
25:34Hey, we got something.
25:35Where are they going?
25:47Where are they going?
26:01I don't know.
26:06I didn't bury anyone over there.
26:10They're all wrapped the same.
26:24They're all wrapped the same.
26:26They must be yours.
26:27They must be yours.
26:28Swear to God.
26:28All my kills are back there.
26:29These aren't mine.
26:38I'm going to have nightmares about that burial site.
26:40I'm going to talk to you.
26:43I'm going to have to go in and I'm going to go in and I'm going to have to go in here.
26:44empathy is your best quality really best quality well there are certain others best discussed in
26:51a non-professional setting thanks for coming right over yeah of course you saw the bodies
26:58yes we didn't unwrap any of them for fear of compromising dna evidence they're all being
27:02sent to our morgue facility downtown give us the room guys hey good to see you again likewise wish
27:09it was over a cafe americano but here we are hi nice to see you uh who wants to start i will
27:14as i told garza it seems clear that we have a second serial killer at large harrison novak has
27:19been falling all over himself to take credit for his kills but he seemed genuinely shocked when we
27:24uncovered those bodies he knows who the second killer is maybe but it feels unlikely i agree
27:28with nila novak seemed totally thrown by the bodies and worried that this killer would somehow overshadow
27:33him okay so what's our first step mine is a thorough examination of all the victims which
27:39will take days if not weeks in the short term we need to try to figure out a connection between
27:43the two killers well let's say harper's intuition is right and novak doesn't know the identity of
27:48the second killer i mean it can't be a coincidence that number two used the same green tarp to bury
27:54his victims he's clearly piggybacking off of novak's burial site right which would indicate that killer
27:59number two is trying to hide his crimes inside novak which is a complete opposite of harrison novak a
28:04killer who's desperate for recognition how did number two know about the burial site i mean they must have
28:10crossed paths somewhere right theoretically but without even the slightest hint of where to start
28:13looking we're talking about an infinitely large haystack hiding a very small needle hope i'm not
28:17interrupting but i might have a smaller haystack for you to search i dug through my notes from the
28:21harrison novak case file when we first met he mentioned that he had spent some time in a psychiatric
28:25facility that wasn't in this file well he was 15 voluntary admission not criminal which facility
28:30westview out in chatsworth we've been there before director's a pill we'll go talk to her do you
28:35mind expediting a warrant she's not going to give us anything unless she has to yeah consider it done
28:40you do know not everyone suffering from mental illness is a serial killer of course but we did
28:45just arrest one and he was treated at this facility 15 years ago so we're not just here because we
28:50heard how personable the staff is okay listen we know that this is a sensitive subject but most serial
28:56killers suffer from some sort of psychosis or antisocial personality disorder nice which psychology
29:01101 book did you pull that from i'm about to put her in a different kind of hospital with all due
29:07respect we just pulled more than a dozen bodies out of a field and now we have a court order for your
29:11patient records either you give us access to those records now or later after you spent the weekend in
29:17jail are you aware people suffering from mental illness are actually more likely to be victims of
29:22violent crime yes but that's not relevant at this moment so are you going to give us the list of
29:27patients and staff who are here with novak or not it'll take a while to assemble you have 12 hours
29:34and we don't do grace periods i really thought you were going to hurt her there for a minute
29:39me too and you weren't exactly playing good cop either whatever gets the job done
29:44what
29:58same green tarp you want to go in as opposed to calling in 100 cops to do it for us no guts no glory
30:08control this is detective lopez harper and i are code six

31:24maybe from an old patient
31:29I feel like I've seen this movie before
31:40yeah but they don't have guns
31:42control this situation is escalating

32:50I don't know.
33:20I don't know.
33:50I don't know.
34:20I don't know.
34:22I don't know.
34:27I don't know.
34:32Naila, dear, are you okay?
34:40No, he injected me with something.
34:43I can't feel my legs.
34:44Okay, hang on.
34:45There's an ambulance on the way.
34:47This is Lopez, officer down, Westview basement.
34:50Conscious and breathing, but injected with some type of paralytic and can't move her legs.
34:54We need those EMTs down here now.
34:55Copy that, detective.
34:56They're on their way.
34:57It's gonna be okay.
35:02How you doing?
35:11Better.
35:12My feeling's mostly back.
35:13My best guess is short-term paralytic.
35:17I'll just try not to think too hard about how dirty all the needles were down there.
35:21Probably for the best.
35:23Any sign of our suspect?
35:24No.
35:24He clearly had an escape route.
35:26Psych hospital just sent a list of patients and employees.
35:29It's a lot of names.
35:30FBI's digging in.
35:32How's the guy we pulled out of there?
35:33Remy Darden.
35:36He's in rough shape.
35:37Hopefully he's stable enough in the morning to talk to us.
35:40And James will be here soon.
35:42Yes.
35:42I didn't tell him what really happened, just that you suffered a minor injury on the job.
35:47Thanks.
35:49You want to talk about how scary that was?
35:52Nope.
35:53You want a hug?
35:54No.
35:58Yes.
36:00Nolan, my office.
36:18Yes, sir.
36:18I got a call from Detroit PD.
36:22They pulled Prince from a liquor store robbery last night.
36:25Were they Pete's?
36:25They were Pete's, weren't they?
36:27Jason Weillers.
36:29Detroit, Michigan?
36:30I ran a VICAP search.
36:32There was another hit on Jason's prints two days before outside of Provo.
36:36Looks like Mel Votto's got him spooked.
36:38He's been heading east.
36:39Get as far away from L.A. as he can.
36:41I'm a little surprised he picked survival over revenge, but I'll take it.
36:44I gave Detroit PD your info.
36:46They'll call if they have anything more.
36:48Thank you, sir.
36:50Hold up.
36:51One more thing.
36:52I've been overprotective, and if Bailey divorces me, no one will blame her.
36:57If I'm in your shoes, I'm just as crazed.
37:00But you have to live your lives.
37:03Yes, sir.
37:10Where do you think you're going?
37:13Home feels like the wrong answer, but I'm not sure why.
37:16Sawed off shotgun, dagger, nunchucks, AR-15.
37:19Which two violate the same penal code?
37:21We doing this now.
37:22You need to know the law cold, no matter how tired you are.
37:24No matter how many of the things are going on.
37:26Right.
37:27Sawed off shotgun and dagger.
37:29Violation of 12020, possession of an illegal weapon.
37:32What about nunchucks?
37:33Formerly a violation of 12020, but currently no violation at all.
37:37They became legal in 2023.
37:39Good.
37:40You're dismissed.
37:42Sergeant, I appreciate it.
37:45How hard you are on me, and how dedicated you are at doing the job right.
37:48And I swear I'm not kissing up.
37:49Where I'm from, a lot of cops don't have that same love of diligence.
37:52Some were transplants where I fell from other departments.
37:55They didn't care the way that you do.
37:56You know, I guess I really understand how much I had to learn.
38:00So, thank you.
38:02Dismissed.
38:04Yes, sir.
38:04I know that logically, intellectually, even legally, I'm not to blame for Novak's crimes, but...
38:21Emotionally, I'm struggling.
38:23Well, you're not a robot, Wes.
38:25I mean, I would actually be more concerned if you felt nothing after all this.
38:29But on the bright side, at least you've forgotten about the detective who has the hots for your wife, right?
38:34Well, now I'm thinking about him.
38:36Anyway.
38:36What is this?
38:38You're having a wake for Sean's political career.
38:41Didn't invite me.
38:42I made a sound only a bat could hear.
38:43I figured that would do the trick.
38:45Oh.
38:45Hi.
38:45It is so nice to see you retain your sense of humor given the end of your campaign.
38:50Huh.
38:51I mean, who would elect a DA who is so instrumental in letting a serial killer go free?
38:55Okay.
38:56You and I both know that what happened is far more complicated than that.
39:00Of course.
39:01But voters don't do complicated.
39:03You should withdraw before you get embarrassed at the polls.
39:06Mm-hmm.
39:07Really nice to have you back.
39:09Mm-hmm.
39:12She's lovely.
39:13Mm-hmm.
39:14Oh.
39:15Third down and three inside your 25-yard line.
39:18Here's the stand.
39:19And he hands off to number two with a...
39:21Stay.
39:24Hey.
39:25Hey.
39:26Um, how much do you trust the LAPD background checks?
39:29I'm sorry, why are you at my door asking me that?
39:31Come on.
39:31Okay, so...
39:32Seth told me that his high school girlfriend died of an OD, but then he told Miles that she died in a car accident.
39:39I confronted him about it.
39:40He covered it pretty well, said that they were different girlfriends, but I...
39:43That...
39:44That seems pretty unlikely.
39:46I just can't shake this feeling that there's something off with him.
39:48Look, our background checks are pretty invasive.
39:50Andy would have had to pass a polygraph test, which we both know those are illuminating.
39:55If he was hiding something, I think it would have come out.
39:58You're right.
39:59But you're still not satisfied.
40:00No, I...
40:02I'm sorry.
40:04I...
40:04Okay.
40:06Oh!
40:07Oh, my gosh.
40:08Hey, Coach, Joe.
40:10You like a butt scratch?
40:13I miss you.
40:15Feelings mutual.
40:20Look, I know it's late, and I don't have much in the way of food, but I could order something.
40:24Um...
40:26Oh.
40:32No.
40:34No.
40:34I should, um...
40:35I'm gonna go, and so have a good night.
40:39You too.
40:40Okay.
40:41Okay.
40:42All right.
40:42All right.
40:45Help me.
40:46Okay.
40:47I'm happy to come back whenever you need me.
40:58I think so, uh, we're all set.
41:00Thanks for the offer.
41:02I'm happy to be back.
41:03Oh!
41:04Thank you so much.
41:05Yeah.
41:07All righty.
41:08Bye, guys.
41:09Bye.
41:09See you soon.
41:09Bye.
41:10Bye.
41:10Bye.
41:15I am sorry.
41:17I am sorry for treating you like a damsel in distress when you are anything but.
41:23You are strong, you are smart, and you are more than capable of handling yourself.
41:31Sometimes it's just hard to figure out what kind of help you need from me.
41:36Well, I knew you were coming from a good place.
41:38I just...
41:39In the future, I recommend asking instead of telling.
41:42Agreed.
41:43Let me try.
41:43Would you care to spend some quality personal time with me in our quality personal bed?
41:52Perfect.
41:55I'm just gonna get us a water, you know, for after.
41:58Excellent.
41:59Hydrate.
41:59Hydrate.
41:59Hydrate.
42:00Hydrate.
42:02Hydrate.
42:05Uh, yeah.
42:09Hydrate.
42:17inating.
42:18Hydrate.
42:19Hydrate.
42:21Hydrate.
42:52Damn it.
