00:00Across America, and the world, in the depths of forests, is an elusive man-like creature, Bigfoot.
00:30Sasquatch.
00:33Thousands of reports, photos and videos pour in each year of Bigfoot encounters from all
00:3849 continental states and Canada.
00:43We're talking about a living, breathing population.
00:47There has to be a minimum of 4,000 animals roaming North America.
00:53And public interest is only increasing.
00:55It's very mainstream.
00:56It's cool to be into Bigfoot.
00:58Bigfoot fervor is at a fever pitch in this country.
01:03But what exactly are these mysterious creatures that have caught so much attention?
01:08What does science have to say about them?
01:12And why are many so sure they exist?
01:15We've set out to find the truth in chasing Bigfoot.
01:22Join us as we travel to the deep woods of the Appalachian foothills to experience a Bigfoot
01:27adventure weekend.
01:28Located at Salt Fork State Park in eastern Ohio, Bigfoot adventure weekends is a yearly campout
01:31for Bigfoot enthusiasts and families that come from as far away as Canada, upstate Ohio, Bigfoot
01:38adventure weekends is a yearly campout for Bigfoot enthusiasts and families that come from as far away as Canada, upstate Ohio, and upstate Ohio.
01:50To learn more about these mysterious creatures.
01:54First, we met up with the mysterious creatures.
02:08We met up with the co-founders of Bigfoot adventure weekends, Alan and Jesse of Fathom Frontiers and Sharon.
02:15We started out probably with 12 to 15 the first year and then it got to 20, 25 and then this year we're close to 50.
02:25We have people here that have claimed to see Bigfoot and people here that have never been camping before so we have a whole mix of people and that's what we take pride in with this event that it's for everyone.
02:35Our expectations every year is that people come away and they talk about it and realize it's a little bit more than just about Bigfooting.
02:43It's more about just, you know, hey you can come out and have a good time, this doesn't have to be so serious.
02:47I mean, after all, we're going out in the woods looking for something that's 8 feet tall and 500 pounds.
02:52With little kids.
02:54I think it was the third year we did it and the group all came back from the night hike and they were just freaking out because they had so much activity that was happening and they all came back to the campfire and they're all chatting and that makes us feel good.
03:08It's like, you know, we didn't promise that anything was going to happen. We're not hoaxing anything to make something happen.
03:12We have some of the top investigators from Ohio that actually are here and they will help kind of organize some of the activity to keep things for the people that really want to get serious about it.
03:23Bigfoot wasn't the only elusive creature around Salt Fork. The 17-year cicadas had made their appearance along with their distinct sound.
03:35And on behalf of everybody that helps run this, I want to welcome you to BAW Bigfoot Adventure Weekend 2016. Thank you.
03:41Thank you all for coming out. One thing we like is kind of go around the circle here, the group, and have everybody introduce themselves.
03:50This is my grandson James. And my seven-year-old Bryson, he was into it.
03:56I've been pursuing, actively pursuing the Bigfoot phenomenon for about three years.
04:02We came, this is my son over here, Hunter, and we drove from Virginia, so I keep hoping he finds Bigfoot so we don't have to come back anymore.
04:09Hi, this is Hayden. We met Hayden before all of you. Four years ago.
04:16I've just been into Bigfoot for a while now. I know they're out there.
04:21Really, it doesn't matter if Bigfoot exists. This is what's fun.
04:27In the morning, we checked in with a few people around camp. This is the first Bigfoot Adventure Weekend for the Tyler family from Michigan.
04:42Came into camp, did introductions, got to meet everybody.
04:47Robert Webb is an experienced Bigfoot researcher.
04:50And I have had two actual sightings so far in my research.
04:56Twelve-year-old Hunter has been coming to Bigfoot Adventure Weekends for three years.
05:01One day, I just went to my house, and I was flipping through the channels, and I saw fighting Bigfoot.
05:06You'll see, I thought that was the dumbest thing. That can't be real.
05:10And then I started watching and watching me, and then we found out here, and then we came here, and all the stuff they were saying, and now I'm late.
05:17Spencer, 15 years old, has been interested in Bigfoot since he was a young boy.
05:23I've always been, like, into nature even when I was really little. I just, like, grew up watching all these nature shows, and, well, Bigfoot just seems like it's very possible.
05:36This is eight-year-old James and his grandma Diane's first visit to the weekend.
05:41I believe in Bigfoot.
05:42We're getting ready for the hike!
05:44A nature walk was led by Bigfoot investigator Mark DeWorth to get everyone familiar with the terrain and prepare them for the upcoming night operations.
06:01Robert Webb showed us photographic evidence of his Bigfoot research.
06:05Okay, this is a tree twist that's located up on Bigfoot Ridge.
06:09And if you notice the twist, it's, it's, uh, rang just like a dishcloth. You'd ring out a dishcloth.
06:15And there's no known animal that can do that.
06:19Now this track, it's about, it's showing on the tape, it's about 16 inches long, but the, the toes aren't distinct, so if I'd had the toes in it, it'd probably be 17, 18 inches.
06:32During the nature hike, Robert decided to take us to Bigfoot Ridge, a well-known landmark in Salt Fork State Park, well-known for Bigfoot sightings.
06:44Look at all the cicadas when you look up.
06:49Just look.
06:50Just looking out for, like, anything that's out of the ordinary.
06:54I'm hitting above it.
06:55Not Bigfoot. Bigfoot's not gonna hurt you. You have nothing to worry about Bigfoot.
06:59Meanwhile, we reached Bigfoot Ridge with Robert.
07:03Okay, Bigfoot Ridge starts here where we just top this hill, and it runs down maybe 300 yards.
07:09We headed down a service road to the location of Robert's first sighting.
07:13That fateful night, he was accompanied by a friend.
07:18We turned our lights out, okay, and we were just sitting in the dark.
07:24In about 10 minutes, we started hearing noise from this ridge top right over here.
07:32My friend that was with me, she was the first one to see the eye shine.
07:38And I tried to find the eye shine, but I couldn't see it.
07:43And I was using night vision.
07:45So I brought my night vision over here, and it was one of these trees right in here.
07:52That's where I saw the half of the head and the shoulder and the left arm, and they were just hanging out from behind the tree.
08:01And as soon as I moved my night vision in his direction, he took off, came down this way maybe 10 or 15 feet, stepped across the road.
08:13That's where we heard the real heavy steps coming right across the road.
08:18And they came up this hill and came in behind us.
08:26We did a few wood knocks to try and get a Bigfoot's attention.
08:30And with no response, headed back.
08:33Found some Bigfoot tracks in the mud.
08:36It's been a great trip so far.
08:39With everyone back at camp, Alan and Jesse led a class on video and audio evidence.
09:02That's Bigfoot.
09:04As night began to fall, it was time for the first night ops.
09:11An event that would get everyone as close to having a Bigfoot experience as possible, deep in Salt Forks trails.
09:18We joined Alan's team and arrived at the trailhead.
09:21I'm the only team lead here, so we're going to do this.
09:25I don't care.
09:27I know the trail, and we're just going to go for it because this is Bigfoot Adventure Weekend.
09:32You hear what I'm saying?
09:34Yes.
09:35Let's do this.
09:36I'm going to add one.
09:37I'm going to hit the back.
09:38Copy that.
09:39Be advised, the trail is severely overgrown, and it's interesting finding your way through here.
09:43Good luck.
09:44And we've broken into several different teams here to make our way down this unused trail
09:52at part of Salt Fork.
09:53And we're going to hold up here and wait for the other team to kind of move towards our position.
09:58Roger, it appears that we're also approaching weird beings with red lights on their heads.
10:07We were soon joined by Mark DeWorth's team.
10:10The reality of all of this is plain and simple.
10:1595% of the time, nothing ever happens.
10:18It's just being persistent in your location.
10:21So when we do these night ops with multiple teams, we try to emulate what the Sasquatch would
10:25do with multiple teams.
10:27So we'll do wood knocks from an area, and then the other team will listen from their position.
10:31Obviously, we'll listen from ours.
10:33And then we'll have them do wood knocks to kind of simulate multiple Sasquatch out here.
10:41So we kind of emulate them.
10:42And if there's one out here, maybe we can stir it up.
10:44We're going to do a vocalization now.
10:46Copy.
10:47Copy.
10:48All right, hush.
10:55Okay, everybody, let's kill a red headlamp.
10:58So we're going to do some calls.
10:59I'm going to radio in.
11:00This is Alan.
11:01We're going to do a howl in five seconds.
11:04I am going to send them.
11:19Clear?
11:28Did you hear that?
11:29Of course.
11:303 o'clock?
11:31left? Yes. There's something to your left as well, your nine. The nine's moving closer.
11:40Is that our group? No. Was that our group? So after doing some howls and calls back and forth,
11:47we started hearing something moving off to our left. And then we started hearing something move
11:53off to our right. So we were holding up just to see if we could figure out what's coming in around
11:57us. We started on the trail again and met up with Mark Maisel's team. Take me to your leader.
12:04All right. So we made our way down the fire trail with the group that we have. We met up with the
12:09other team led by Mark Maisel at a junction in the trail where it actually heads up to a cemetery.
12:18Cemetery bound, kids.
12:22We reached the small historic cemetery.
12:25This is Ford Cemetery. A few people know about it and even fewer have actually been here.
12:32Because as you can see, it wasn't that easy to get here.
12:34Yeah.
12:35Is this Ford? No.
12:39I'd rather run more.
12:41They can get around me.
12:43They ain't gonna be...
12:44But yeah.
12:46Who was that?
12:47Yeah, I was like that.
12:50Let's go right back.
12:52No, it's not the one here.
12:53This way.
12:54No.
12:55We have a majority of all the teams together except for one. We just heard a weird whistling
13:11sound come from behind us. And we're kind of discussing what's going on with that. Right
13:16down here.
13:19We're going to all together give the biggest freaking Bigfoot call this place has ever heard.
13:25Are you guys ready?
13:27As long as we can or...
13:30Yeah, until it feels right, you know? Until it feels right.
13:32All right. On three. Are you ready?
13:34One, two, three.
13:38All right.
13:39All right.
13:39All right. We can probably pull out now and start heading back.
13:52I should've got one of the little Malfar Pansons.
13:55Use a seat.
13:58All right, we can probably pull out now
14:01and start heading back.
14:03Exhausted from the hike,
14:05everyone headed back to camp to rest for the day ahead.
14:16In the morning, we checked in about the night ops.
14:19We went hiking at 10.
14:21Way in the woods.
14:23Way in the woods.
14:24We split up into two groups.
14:27And then we stopped because we heard two wood knocks.
14:32One to the right, and then one to the left.
14:35And we got to see the full graveyard.
14:39When we were out on the hike last night,
14:40some people did some Bigfoot howls, Bigfoot calls,
14:43and some people heard some movement in the woods,
14:47but nothing definitive.
14:48But out here in this park, it could be a number of things.
14:53So we're on the home stretch now.
14:54We have pretty much wrapped up all the events except for our main event tonight,
15:00which is night operations with Mark Maisel.
15:02Before the next night ops, Cynthia Koss, a naturalist at Salt Fork State Park,
15:09led a footprint casting presentation.
15:11And we checked in with Jesse about the trail cam.
15:17So we went back to retrieve the trail cam we had set up yesterday afternoon.
15:22And unfortunately, there were no pictures on it of anything other than actually setting up the trail cam
15:29and tearing it down, and then a few times, you know, some people walking up and down the trail.
15:35Once it was dark, it was time for the final night ops.
15:38All right, so welcome to the culmination of this weekend's festivities,
15:43the Saturday night night operations.
15:46And we've got a little bit different thing we planned for tonight.
15:54We are going to be staging and working from our campground right here.
16:01Mark Maisel, a lead Bigfoot investigator, orchestrated the night ops.
16:05We're going to free-flow this a little bit.
16:08Tonight, what we're going to do is we're going to send a couple people out, be passive,
16:12and on the trail there.
16:13Now, if people really want to hike, we've got the trail here back behind us.
16:17There's a nice big field going around it that's a flank.
16:21We're going to take some people and walk around just the perimeter on the road a couple times,
16:26maybe set a couple people up by the front gate.
16:28The other thing the kids are going to do is gather glow sticks and stuff like that.
16:33You guys are just going to hang out and have fun with glow sticks.
16:36We split up into groups, and the night ops began.
16:40Mark Maisel was joined by Hayden.
16:43Come back out.
16:44Hit the field and take it to the left of the tree line and then to the right.
16:49David Taters Wickham led a group.
16:51So right now it's going to give us about 25 minutes to get out and get set.
16:55And work calm, be quiet.
16:58And then around 10 o'clock, we're going to need to do whoops and knocks and stuff, OK?
17:02We followed Hunter and Bea.
17:06This is Allen's team.
17:07We're towards the back of the field, and we're going to do a wood knock and five.
17:11We're here listening.
17:12Everybody else is out this way.
17:14Right now we're at the flank.
17:16We've got people there, we've got people there, we've got people there,
17:20and we've got people that way.
17:22We are the furthest eastern flank right now.
17:26What I want to do is kind of sit down and calm down, kind of like go, OK, what they're doing.
17:31And then let the other team come up and then have them make, you know, the noise coming up.
17:36And so now they have to make a decision.
17:38Stay with us, go see what's going on.
17:41So what we're doing is we're pushing them.
17:45Oh, somebody is scattering.
17:49We're getting all confused.
17:50I'm getting around.
17:52We're coming up loud.
17:54We just heard kind of a far away howl.
17:56Is that somebody up there?
17:58Over.
18:00Negative.
18:00No one in base camp howled.
18:02We did not howled.
18:03We didn't know the howled.
18:05I got who?
18:07Towards where the cars are.
18:09Yeah, that's why did the kids know?
18:12I don't know.
18:12Write it down.
18:13Yep.
18:14It was in line with the field, so going on that way, yeah.
18:17OK, we're moving.
18:19All right.
18:20All right.
18:21Meanwhile, Robert Webb took us back to Bigfoot Ridge
18:24to show us his investigation technique.
18:27We're just going to sit on either side and just sit,
18:34observe, and listen for any activity that might come along.
18:38OK?
18:39Now, I've had more success with my technique
18:43than with all the wood knocking and hollering
18:47and things like that in the howls.
18:49This is more like just passive observation.
18:54Back at base camp, the kids tried to draw in Bigfoots.
18:57Whoop, whoop, whoop.
19:00We're hanging out.
19:01We're making some noise and howlers and stuff.
19:05We should go there because, um...
19:08When we have a group this big and everything else,
19:10it's about the team, not any one person.
19:16This is Taylor's group.
19:17We're going to do a howl here in about a minute.
19:20Over.
19:22All Taylor's group is going to do a howl in about a minute.
19:26OK.
19:27Big hand, big chest, lots of air.
19:31Start off down low, and then bring it up.
19:34What's the time?
19:3710.01.
19:40Whoa!
19:43That's Wickham too.
19:50He did a pretty good call.
19:53He did like a high pitch.
19:59High pitch howl.
20:00That way.
20:00That way.
20:01Could be coyotes.
20:03OK, that was a very good yell.
20:05Actually, it feels like a pretty good night.
20:15I heard some movement over here off to the right.
20:17I heard one twig break, and then I heard some light movement
20:23on the ground, you know, of other debris.
20:36Brake, brake, brake.
20:39Any station this event, be advised,
20:41do we have someone across the main road over?
20:45Negative.
20:46I heard it, too, in base camp.
20:48It sounded almost like a yoke.
20:50Yeah.
20:51Exposed to us.
20:53In fact, it was just across the road,
20:55within several hundred feet, over.
20:58They're hearing footfalls and some grunts, growls.
21:04So they pulled Allen's team back out from the field
21:07and Maisel's team, and they're headed down
21:09to give them a little bit of backup.
21:11So the only team left back up in the field is Wickham's team.
21:16Actually, Zach is going to head towards base camp.
21:20Everyone headed back to base camp.
21:24OK.
21:27We had a bunch of howls and calls.
21:29Something was walking toward us,
21:32but it sounded like it was on four legs.
21:34I think, you know, tonight, what we were trying to do
21:36was be unpredictable.
21:38Right when we were crossing the first time
21:40with the two groups, we did hear, like, a hoo.
21:44I think it could be an owl.
21:47As we continued on, we went up the hill.
21:49As we was listening, we heard a quiet, high-pitched return.
21:54Again, first thing we want to think about is what it could be.
21:56It could have been a coyote.
21:59With the successful night ops complete,
22:01everyone shared their experiences and went to sleep.
22:11It was the last day of the Bigfoot Adventure weekend.
22:14The most memorable thing happening over the weekend is just meeting up
22:20with all my friends that I haven't seen for a year.
22:24Probably the night hikes, those were really fun.
22:27Completely broke my stereotype of what I thought Bigfoot hunters were.
22:31Love this, and we'll definitely be back next year.
22:34Oh, I'm never forgetting this.
22:37Like, this whole experience is just one huge memory
22:41that I'm just going to love for the rest of my life.
22:44This weekend was such a success.
22:46It was more than we ever imagined, more than we anticipated.
22:49Yeah, we had more people here than we've ever had before,
22:51and we didn't mean to have this many people here this year,
22:53but it worked out, and we were able to feed everybody
22:57and get everybody out in the woods and back safely.
22:59So it was awesome.
23:00No, it was a great time.
23:01I was talking with a couple of people before they left,
23:04and they liked the ability that they brought their families
23:07and were able to, you know, we were able to do things
23:10to engage their kids and keep them occupied
23:13and at the same time still provide stuff for, you know, the adults.
23:18So that's a very, that's one of the best compliments we can get.
23:23Yeah, I like this.
23:26No, there's no doubt.
23:27No, there's no doubt.
23:28No, there's no doubt.
23:29No, there's no doubt.
23:30I don't know.
23:32There's no doubt.
23:33No, there's no doubt.
23:35We've been on the internet.
23:37We've been on the internet.
23:40No, there are no doubt.
23:45You can find out on Twitter.
