04:09You see, the body of a young man was found floating in the pool of her mansion.
04:14Joe begins to tell the story of his murder from beyond the grave, setting the perfect tone.

04:21Believe it or not, the film begins in a morgue, where Joe and other dead bodies share how they died.
04:26Well, the test audience found it funny and confusing, which was not the vibe Wilder was going for.

06:30In the final showdown, Clark lures them into the Fortress of Solitude, where they lose their powers.
06:36Powerless, General Zod gets tossed into the abyss, with Ursa and Nan following soon after.
06:40While this version opts for this cinematic final resolution,
06:51there is a scene that sees these villains get arrested by a U.S. Polar Patrol.
06:55Sure, it's only possible if they're depowered,
06:57but does it even make sense that the police found this icy remote fortress?

07:03Watching these villains fall to their deaths is more epic than seeing them leave in cuffs.

11:18And that was at the time of her death.
11:20Which was two years ago.
11:26I'm real sorry.
11:27However, there's a powerful scene that never made the theatrical cut.
11:31After waking, Ripley asks about her daughter, and Burke breaks the news.
11:35Amanda died.
11:36This means Ripley has missed out on her daughter's entire life.
11:40With this heart-wrenching scene, Ripley gets more depth.
11:43It helps us understand why she's so protective of Newt.
11:46She's no longer just a badass, but also more relatable.
11:49Why was it cut out again?
11:51Perhaps it slowed the pacing.
11:53Still, that depth is totally worth it.
11:55At the end of his first solo adventure, Steve Rogers wakes up in the 21st century and realizes the world is no longer the one he knew.

12:25You can imagine that skipping over 70 years of history, pop culture, and technological evolution would be pretty disorienting.
12:32This deleted scene shows Cap dealing with that emotional fallout, and reveals that he's not as well adjusted as he appears on the surface.
12:39It's a bit of character development that would have affected how we see Cap through the rest of the film.
12:43Plus, it includes another Stan Lee cameo.

12:49Number 19. Shot in the Back. Back to the Future Part 3.
12:52That's far enough, Tannen. I don't want any trouble.
12:56You stay out of my way and there won't be none.
12:58We knew Buford Mad Dog Tannen was dirty, but shooting an unarmed man in the back in front of his young son is especially evil.
13:05This deleted scene not only tells us just how rotten Tannen is, it also explains a lot about the Strickland legacy.
13:12In the franchise's modern day, Principal Strickland is obsessed with discipline.
13:16If your grandfather watched his dad get gunned down by an outlaw, it would presumably have a lasting impact on your family's way of thinking too.
13:24No wonder Principal Strickland never turns his back on a slacker.
13:26I've never seen you before in my life, but you look to me like a slacker.
13:30Number 18. Saruman's Downfall. The Lord of the Rings. The Return of the King.
13:35Come down, Saruman, and your life will be spared.
13:40Save your pity and your mercy. I have no use for it.
13:43Considering how important Saruman is to the story of this trilogy,
13:47it's a little weird that he doesn't even appear in the theatrical cut of the third film.
13:51The last we see of him is in The Two Towers,
13:54when the Ents attack Isengard and destroy his fortress.
13:57If you've never seen this deleted scene, you might assume that's the end of Saruman.
14:01However, the extended version of The Return of the King shows us his actual end.
14:06Although Gandalf tries to capture him alive,
14:09Saruman is ultimately stabbed in the back by his slimy lackey Grima Wormtongue.
14:13The filth of Saruman is washing away.
14:20Number 17. Letting Lecter Go. Hannibal.
14:23It's obvious that Hannibal Lecter has a thing for Clarice Starling,
14:26but we never had the impression that she reciprocates his feelings.
14:29Tell me, Clarice, would you ever say to me, stop?
14:36If you loved me, you'd stop.
14:37Not in a thousand years.
14:42That is, until we saw the alternate ending of Hannibal.
14:45In the original ending, Clarice attempts to trap the cultured cannibal
14:48by handcuffing his wrist to hers,
14:50forcing him to cut off his own hand to get away.
14:53In this deleted version, none of that happens.
14:55Instead, she simply gives up and allows him to escape,
14:59knowing full well that he will likely kill again.
15:01The scene paints Starling and her relationship to Lecter
15:16in a completely different light,
15:18and makes us wonder if she found herself falling for him after all.
15:22Number 16. The Manager Knew All Along.
15:25The Shining.
15:25In this Stanley Kubrick classic,
15:27Jack Torrance slowly loses his mind while working as a hotel caretaker.
15:31Here's Johnny!
15:33The finale culminates with Jack trying to murder his wife and son,
15:37who escape, leaving Jack to freeze to death.
15:40That's the last we see of them,
15:41but the original script included one more scene.
15:44In the lost footage,
15:45the hotel manager visits Wendy and Danny in the hospital,
15:47telling them that nothing unusual was found in the empty hotel.
15:51He then tosses Danny a tennis ball,
15:53just like the one used by the hotel's ghosts to lure him in.
15:56Is the manager a ghost too?
15:57Did he set up the family to be murdered?
15:59This ambiguity is exactly why test audiences didn't respond to the scene.
16:04That is, uh, quite a story.
16:08Yeah, it is.
16:11Oh, it's still hard for me to believe it actually happened here.
16:15But, it did.
16:17Number 15.
16:18Ferris is a Thief.
16:19Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
16:21If the audience doesn't consider Ferris to be a likable guy,
16:24this movie really doesn't work.
16:26They all adore him.
16:27They think he's a righteous dude.
16:29That's probably why director John Hughes decided not to film the scene,
16:33in which Ferris steals his dad's savings bonds to fund his day off.
16:37Early in the film,
16:38Mr. Bueller calls to check on his son,
16:39who he believes to be sick.
16:41In the original script,
16:42this scene was extended to show Ferris sneakily getting his father
16:45to tell him where his savings bonds are hidden.
16:47After he hangs up,
16:48Ferris breaks the fourth wall to make a snarky remark about how easy it was.
16:52Incredible.
16:54One of the worst performances of my career,
16:56and they never doubted it for a second.
16:58We know Ferris isn't above lying,
17:00but stealing from his own family would have turned him into an actual villain.
17:04Number 14.
17:05Loki Didn't Steal the Throne.
17:07Thor.
17:08You can bring your urgent matter to me.
17:18You're king.
17:19This scene would have cast Loki in a totally different light.
17:23Just after Odin reveals to his younger son that he's actually adopted,
17:26the All-Father falls into the Odin sleep,
17:28an Asgardian version of a coma.
17:30A few minutes later,
17:31the film hard cuts to Loki sitting on the throne,
17:34leading viewers to believe he seized the opportunity to assume power.
17:37But in an earlier deleted scene,
17:39we see Frigga bestowing Odin's scepter on Loki,
17:42telling him to make his father proud as king.
17:45Thor is banished.
17:46The line of succession falls to you.
17:51Until Odin awakens,
17:54Asgard is yours.
17:57The look on Loki's face makes it clear that he is shocked,
18:00maybe even moved by this turn of events.
18:03The scene makes his later betrayal even more nefarious.
18:06Number 13.
18:07Peter's Dad.
18:08The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
18:10One of the quintessential aspects of Peter Parker's character and backstory
18:13is that his parents are dead.
18:14So what if we found out that his father is actually alive?
18:18In a deleted scene near the end of the film,
18:20Peter is mourning Gwen Stacy when his supposedly dead dad shows up out of nowhere.
18:25What?
18:25What?
18:26Say it!
18:26Say what you want to say!
18:28What do you want to say?
18:29Where have you been?
18:33You're dead!
18:34He gives Peter a spiel about faking his death to keep Peter safe,
18:37and the two have a heart-to-heart on a park bench.
18:40Since the sequels to this movie were cancelled,
18:42we never got to see where this surprise development would have led.
18:45But considering that critics already skewered the film for being unfocused
18:49and having way too many characters,
18:51it's probably best that the scene hit the cutting room floor.
18:53It was never my destiny to save anything.
18:58It's you, our son.
19:01With great power,
19:04comes great responsibility.
19:06After narrowly escaping the T-1000,
19:14John, Sarah, and the T-800 retreat to an abandoned building.
19:17The theatrical version of the scene is pretty short.
19:20Sarah digs bullets out of Arnie's back while he and John chat.
19:24In the longer director's cut,
19:25the T-800 explains that if they reset a chip in his brain,
19:28he'll be able to learn more and become more human.
19:31Can you learn stuff that you haven't been programmed with
19:33so you can be,
19:35you know,
19:38more human
19:39and not such a dork all the time?
19:42They agree to do it,
19:43which explains why the Terminator later starts using John's slang
19:46and cracking jokes.
19:47While the android is powered down,
19:49Sarah wants to destroy the chip and kill him,
19:51but John talks her out of it.
19:53I don't know what it's like to try to kill one of these things,
19:55and if something goes wrong,
19:57this could be our last chance to...

19:59if I'm ever supposed to be this great military leader,
20:01maybe you should start listing to my leadership ideas once in a while.
20:05It's an important character moment for both John and the T-800,
20:08and theater audiences never got to see it.
20:11Number 11.
20:12Worst Case Scenario.
20:13Get Out.
20:14Alright, look.
20:17I just take it from the top,
20:19walk me through it again.
20:20It's common for horror movies to have bleak endings,
20:23but this one would have taken the cake.
20:25In the theatrical cut,
20:26Chris narrowly escapes the Armitage house,
20:28and his friend Rod arrives to save the day.
20:30In the original version,
20:32it's not Rod who shows up,
20:33but the cops,
20:34and Chris goes to prison for the murder of the Armitage family.
20:38Director Jordan Peele intended the ending to be a commentary on racism in the criminal justice system.
20:43However,
20:43as he was filming,
20:45he realized that conversations around race in America were changing,
20:48and more people had become aware of systemic racial injustice.
20:51That convinced him that the movie actually needed a happy ending.
20:56I mean,
20:56I told you not to go in that house.
20:58Number 10.
20:59Aragorn vs. Sauron.
21:01The Lord of the Rings.
21:02The Return of the King.
21:03And we also felt that Aragorn has come this distance with his journey,
21:08and that Sauron is his enemy,
21:10and that we had to somehow have this personal duel between Aragorn and Sauron,
21:14and that's not in the book.
21:15When originally putting the film together,
21:17Peter Jackson and company had the idea of a final showdown.
21:20Pitting Aragorn head-to-head against Sauron himself.
21:24The theory was that Aragorn had his own journey,
21:26and facing Sauron was his final hurdle.
21:29And this blinding bright light shines on us,
21:32which blinds, you know,
21:34everyone except Aragorn at a certain moment sees something,
21:37and walks toward it.
21:38In the end,
21:39it was decided that a fight like that would take the emphasis away from Frodo and Sam,
21:43whose story it really was.
21:45You still got to see the footage though,
21:47with the production team using CGI to create a troll for Aragorn to fight instead of the Dark Lord.
21:53It was not what Tolkien imagined,
21:55and we realized that was actually totally demeaning to what Aragorn was doing.
21:59Number 9.
22:00Hunted Becomes the Hunter.
22:02Hostel.
22:02Coming out at the peak of the gore porn craze,
22:09Hostel told the story of tourists who are kidnapped and tortured to death,
22:13as part of a hunting club for the world's super elite.
22:16Those who went to see the theatrical cut of the film,
22:18are well aware that the film ended with Paxton murdering one of the torturers.
22:22In the unreleased director's cut however,
22:25instead of killing the businessman,
22:26Paxton kidnaps the man's daughter.
22:28It's a much darker tale,
22:37as instead of simply killing the businessman,
22:39Paxton's lust for vengeance makes him a monster.
22:47Number 8.
22:48Tashi Station.
22:49Star Wars Episode 4, A New Hope.
22:51You ought to take it a little easy, Luke.
22:54You may be the hottest bush pilot this side of Mos Eisley,
22:57but those little skyhoppers are dangerous.
23:00Star Wars was saved in the editing room.
23:03The original script and cut of the film involved a few additional scenes
23:06that kind of just went nowhere.
23:09Case in point, this scene,
23:10in which Luke meets with Biggs at the infamous Tashi Station.
23:14The scene was not only slow, but completely unnecessary,
23:17as all it did was give clunky exposition,
23:20while offering a few details on space politics we didn't have before.
23:23No, that's not gonna happen here.
23:25You said yourself, the Empire won't even mess with this old rock.
23:27Things can change.
23:28Similarly, in Return of the Jedi,
23:30part of Yoda's monologue originally had him explain
23:33that he instructed Obi-Wan not to tell Luke the truth about his father,
23:36which would have cast the Green Jedi Master
23:38in a different, more manipulative light.
23:41Obi-Wan would have told you long ago had I let him.
23:44Number 7.
23:45Downer Ending, Clerks.
23:47You're closed.
23:48Clerks tells the story of Dante and Randall
23:52and the comings and goings of life in a convenience store,
23:55along with their personal lives and relationships.
23:57When shooting the film,
23:59first-time writer and director Kevin Smith did not know how to end it,
24:02and he originally decided on the downbeat twist
24:05of Dante being shot by a robber.
24:07Oh, I'm sorry, we're closed.
24:09When looking for feedback,
24:15most people, including the actor who plays Dante,
24:18hated the ending,
24:19and Smith took a friend's advice to simply end the film
24:21with the shop closing up.
24:23You're closed.
24:31Number 6.
24:32A Fitting End, Deep Blue Sea.
24:35Let me tell you, man.
24:37I quit this job.
24:39Deep Blue Sea tells the age-old story
24:41of sharks who become hyper-intelligent
24:43after Dr. Susan McAllister tests brain-growing drugs on them
24:46in an effort to find a cure for Alzheimer's.
24:49You know, that old chestnut.
24:51Test audiences were shown the original ending,
24:53in which Susan saves the day by killing the shark,
24:56but they were basically unanimous in their hatred of this ending
24:59and despised that the woman responsible
25:01for creating the deadly sharks got off scot-free.
25:05The filmmakers took the criticism to heart
25:06and chose to kill Susan in the theatrical ending.
25:11Let me ask you something.
25:14Are you sure it was just three sharks?
25:17Yeah.
25:17Number 5.
25:19All-Out War, World War Z.
25:22This isn't the end.
25:25World War Z ended on a surprisingly intimate note,
25:28with Brad Pitt's Jerry reuniting with his family
25:31as a vaccine is developed to help in the war on zombies.
25:34But the original ending was very different
25:37and featured a large-scale battle in Red Square.
25:41A tremendous amount of footage was abandoned
25:43and the process cost the studio millions.
25:46But replacement writer Drew Goddard stated
25:48that it was done in an effort to make the film better.
25:51The original ending had Pitt's character Jerry surviving the battle,
25:54only to find that his wife had turned to prostitution
25:56to support their family.
25:58So, a bit of a bummer.

26:03Becoming a Legend.
26:04I am Legend.
26:05Open the door, please.
26:07The book that I am Legend is based on
26:09tells the story of a man
26:10who sneaks out during the day to hunt vampires,
26:13building up to his realization
26:14that to the vampires that he stalks and murders,
26:17he's the monster.
26:18In the original ending to the 2007 film adaptation,
26:21Will Smith's Robert Neville realizes
26:23that he is under attack
26:24simply because the creatures want back
26:26the female creature he kidnapped for testing
26:28and upon returning her,
